"El Fogon In San Pedro, a town on Belize 's northern island of Ambergris Caye, the Mestizo traditions are strong. The Mestizo people are descendants of the Maya and the Spanish, and when those two cultures mixed, a new one was born. You'll find many Mestizo people in San Pedro, but you'll hardly find a better Mestizo restaurant than El Fogon, a spot owned by a local woman known as Miss Suzannaand run by her daughter. All of the food is cooked in a traditional outdoor oven ( fogon means "kitchen hearth"), and everything is delicious. Try the salbutes , a tacolike dish made with fried tortillas, with a texture that's somehowboth soft and crunchy, or the pig tail with split peas. And the coconut rice is to die for."

Wonderful restaurant in Ambergris and most certainly a taste of the Caribbean with a local flare. The food was amazing, when we travel back to the island we will for sure be coming back. The fried lobster looked absolutely amazing, though none of us tried it. We had a large group and got lots of variations of different dishes. The cocktails were great! If you have a large group- make reservations.

Food was good, just good I wouldn't say really good just good. And the place didn't really have anything that stood out. Pretty ordinary place and good food. The place came highly recommended and we were not disappointed but we weren't wowed either. Staff was friendly. I would go back and eat there but it's the kind of place you try once and move on

If you conduct a search or ask the locals for restaurant recommendations, El Fogon, is one name that often comes up. It is a unique place where everything is cooked on a wood fire and was already on my list. So, on my second day in Ambergris Caye, I headed there for lunch. I had gone diving in the morning, was still exhilarated by the amazing underwater experience, and therefore with a minimal appetite. Just desired a small bite, so that I had a good hunger when it was dinner time. El Fogon is a small restaurant, that is elegantly appointed, with superb music (merengue, when I was there) and a friendly staff. They had exactly what I was looking for, something to give me a taste of the island. From the starter menu, the Belizean Platter (A selection of Belize's Favorite appetizers. 1 piece of each: salbute, empanada, conch fritter, bean dip). Every item was well prepared to highlight distinct flavors, textures and taste. What was my favorite? Hands down the salbute. A wonderful midday dining experience. Service was excellent.

A delicious Belizean dinner! We made reservations because we needed to eat early (6 pm). We were the first ones there for dinner. By the time we left the restaurant was nearly full and so we're we! We ordered the conch ceviche and an appetizer sampler with conch fritters, salbute, fish empanada and bean dip/chips - ALL were good. For dinner we had shrimp and grouper cooked in a butter/lime/garlic sauce served with rice and sauted mixed veggies - excellent flavor, large serving (we shared) and perfectly cooked with a wood-burning oven. Our friends shared a stuffed grouper with spinach and cheese (I think ricotta?) served with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables. They also enjoyed it. If this place had a water view it would be the total package!

I've dined at El Fogon on many occasions, both lunch and dinner. The chicken and shrimp Salbutes appetizers are delicious! The conch fritters we had were excellent! We had two shrimp entries, one cooked in a garlic-cream sauce and the other in a lime-cream sauce. Both were very good. They have a full service bar with all the specialty drinks. I recommend the El Fogon for an enjoyable dining experience!

We were told this was the best seafood on the island and so far it's the best meal we've had here! We had the citric lobster, citric fish (snapper) and curry fish. Both citric dishes were absolutely delicious! The curry was good but didn't beat out the butter garlic sauce of the citric dishes. We also had the hibiscus margarita which wasn't great and the key lime pie (not traditional but good). Our server was very attentive and gave us good recommendations (and how we actually ended up ordering what we did).

A Memorable Stop at El Fogon Restaurant I stumbled upon El Fogon Restaurant around 12:30, just as the place started to buzz with life. It was almost magical—one moment, it was calm, and the next, it was filled with people, all enjoying their meals and lively conversations. The friendly, vibrant atmosphere instantly made me feel at home. I had the pleasure of dining here twice during my stay and was genuinely impressed both times. On my first visit, I tried their lobster tacos. Every bite was a burst of fresh, flavorful delight—the kind of dish that stays with you long after you leave. On another occasion, I sampled their conch soup, a local specialty. It was warm, comforting, and rich, showcasing the best of traditional flavors. El Fogon has a way of making you want to return. Whether it’s the freshness of their ingredients, the excellent preparation, or the welcoming environment, it’s a place I’d wholeheartedly recommend. If I find myself back in the area, I know exactly where I’ll be heading for a great meal.
