Best Restaurants in Rosarito Beach - Eater San Diego

"Argentinean-style steakhouses are popular throughout Mexico and Rosarito’s answer to that is El Gaucho Argentino, which specializes in cuts not often seen in the United States, like vacio or entraña." - Jackie Bryant

I've been on the Carnivore diet for a little over 3 years. I've eaten at pretty much every steakhouse in Tijuana and San Diego. El Gaucho Argentino in Rosarito is hands down the best I've had anywhere in Baja California and San Diego as well. Their meats are amazing! Perfectly seasoned and cooked...you need not add a single thing. I've been their twice and it was better the second time. Very affordable prices, excellent service and the restaurant itself is clean and classically decorated. If you want a killer meat-fest, this is the place. Also, my girlfriend loves the desserts.

Google
The WORST short ribs I have ever eaten in my life. Basically inedible. I told at least 2 staff members and that got me nowhere. The photo probably looks disgusting but that’s what the food looks like after trying to eat it. We have eaten Argentian foods many times so it’s not like I haven’t experienced their excellent food in other restaurants. I assume they do serve decent food because of their rating but my food was poor quality and it didn’t seem to matter to the restaurant. The short ribs were so inedible that I couldn’t even swallow them. Sorry if the pictures look gross.

Google
Great spot for some delicious Argentinian food. The variety of meets on offer look are spectacular. The meat is super tender and the empanadas are delicious! The staff are friendly and helpful. I would definitely like to return here if I’m in the area again. If you’re prone to getting cold, sit in the main area with your back to the fire - it gets quite toasty! They have English menus available

Google
No need to pay extra for the “prime” option. Thank me later. Almost a perfect meal. Maybe a little too salty but I am reaching for any kind of constructive criticism. Happy I finally went and excited to return.

Google
From when we 1st walked in the atmosphere, the smells, and friendly faces. The food only topped the service. The Porterhouse steak, didn't need a knife, empanadas, oh my! Ordered 2 of each to go! & french fries & potato salad. I'm hooked. This place will impress the picky eater. Oh yeah almost forgot their sausage is well. Try it!

Google
The food here is phenomenal! I’ve had steak many places and this is by far my favorite place! We ordered the empanada and all of them were great! I highly recommend the tableada! The meat was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Our server Daniel was very attentive! I felt like a king being served. Also we had a little spill and before we could even grab a napkin there was 3 people at our table wiping the drink up and had it cleaned I’ve never seen service this fast in my life! I live in northern CA and I’d drive here just to have dinner here again!

Google
Such an amazing restaurant, service and family business! We have been patronizing the restaurant since it was a small place with a few tables on the sidewalk. The family is amazing and they have always given personal attention! The food is the BEST!! They have the BEST beef in Baja and they know how to cook it on a fire grill. Stop by if you want great food and a good experience.

Yelp
Oh. My. God. AMAZING This is one of my favorite restaurants in Mexico. Right off of the highway and very easy to get to. My partner and I ordered empenadas, parrillada Argentine, and chajá. Nice, romantic ambiance with great customer service. They speak English here too. The parrillada Argentine was both delicious and a really fun, memorable experience. They give you what looks like a cast iron plate, kept constantly hot. The meat is already cooked but is kept at just the right temperature thanks to the evenly distributed heat. The meat was delicious, not too fatty and packed with flavor. If you don't want to splurge on the parrillada or other pricey meat dishes, please, at least try the empanada. It is very affordable and is my favorite empanada that I have ever tried in my life. I have gone to multiple countries in central and south America. Even if you're so full you could burst, it's worth it, if only for a few bites. I wasn't a fan of the chajá. It tasted like it had a ton of whipped cream, and the peaches were a little syrupy. This place is too good not to get a 5 star though! It blows Nido's out of the water.

Yelp
Best steak incredible taste very clean restaurant. I highly recommend try ribeye. I love visiting Rosarito, but I have problem with Clean restaurant and taste the steak. Generally, you end up with taco. This was wonderful experience for me.

Yelp
We usually go to Chamuyo in El Valle fort our traditional Argentinian asado. Decided to take a chance on this place in Rosarito. Everything about this experience is going to get us to return. Impeccable customer service with every request being met. The fire pit- asador is in the clear view, watching the grill master was an added treat to the dining. The asado tradicional is meant for two but there was plenty of food that finishes cooking at table side. Our extras included a baked potato, green salad, a beef empanada and a chorioan. The pacing of the food was well calculated and the bottle of magoni, Cabernet- Malbec from one of our favorite wineries fave it a special touch. Price is worth it! We will schedule another stop in our return

Yelp
Best steak in Town! We had Orlando as our waiter. He patiently went through the menu with us explaining everything and answering all of our questions. My friend ordered 2 empanadas which I tried. The spinach one was my favorite and if I hadn't tasted that one I would say the cheese especial empanada was my favorite. I have a feeling I will lake all variations. I ordered the fillet mignon, it came perfectly cooked and was so tender. I had it with the fries which were nice and hot when they arrived. We finished with the little cookies that were filled with caramel. They tasted freshly baked and were amazing. Will definitely bring my husband next time he's down.

Yelp
If I could give the place a -3 I would!!!! Both my partner and had horrible stomach aches and threw up at night and morning after we had this meal. This has never happened to us before. Choose where you eat carefully!! Not sure what caused it? The chimichurri? The salsa? The salad or the sandwich we had??? Horrible.

Yelp
Excellent menu , including wines. Very authentic and delicious offerings of both food and wine. I had excellent lamb chops. The table near me had a grill with various meats brought out to share between four people, just like I had at the bottom of the world! It's in a new location right on the highway and a beautiful restaurant.

Graab L.

Yelp
Good food a little bit off the Rosarito beaten path. A high end argentine restaurant in Mexico. There was enough meat for four people on the parilla we ordered.

Yelp
This place should be named "El Gaugo." My husband and I went out for "date" night. We wanted a peaceful and enjoyable time together. Instead, we were terribly bothered. Time wasted. Money wasted. Be careful ordering here. Make sure the waiter knows you want the prices on the menu. Double check your bill and make sure you say something if you see a discrepancy. Our bill did not reflect the menu prices. It was manipulated without our permission. Our check was over 4,000 pesos, $223 USD --- over $100 inflated. On top of that, we were generous to give a 20% tip of 800 pesos ($47 USD). We ordered from the menu two margaritas (130 pesos each), one mezcalita (220 pesos), one glass of wine (120 pesos), two empanadas (70 pesos each! - they're not flown in from Argentina!), the meat platter for two (Tableanas 1870 pesos) and one tiramisu (185 pesos). This does not add up to $4,000 pesos or $223 USD. We ordered the barbecue for two people, The "Tableanas" at 1870 pesos, about $110 USD. It comes with one ribeye, arrachera, one sausage and another piece of meat. The check came with a surprise of 2700 pesos for just the meat! The waiter took back the bill and the new total for just the meat was 2500 pesos. The waiter said we chose prime instead of choice. That was not true because had I known there was an up charge for this, I would have declined. This grade option isn't stated on the menu and the waiter did not tell us. USDA meat grades are not in Mexico. Also, shouldn't all the meat be "prime" at $110 USD? The margaritas on the menu are 130 pesos. Our bill said they cost 320 pesos. Paid the bill of $223 USD because we didn't want to ruin our night and make a fuss even though we wanted to say the bill was not true to the menu prices. For this price, we should have crossed the border to the US to dine at Mastro's Ocean Club. The next day, we returned to "El Gaugo" because we felt taken advantage. We asked for the manager. The waiter who served us the night prior came over to ask "what happened?" We explained the price discrepancies. I asked to get a copy of the check. The manager was listening to the waiter more than us. The waiter did not tell us he was adding Don Julio 70 to mango margaritas. No one mixes Don Julio 70 with margaritas! I explained this to the manager. The waiter argued that we ordered it when we didn't. The manager backed the argument of the waiter about the extra cost of the "prime" meat. I told him the menu should be clear about the meat grade. The manager was trying to add up our bill by himself but I suggested let's go through the bill together and you can return the difference to us. The waiter was arguing and deflecting. The manager said you ate everything and you want your money back? That is not what we wanted. We didn't eat everything and brought our leftovers back to prove it. The manager was getting frustrated after the waiter was arguing and we were trying to explain. It was ridiculous. Finally, the manager became hostile toward us and said, " l'll give you all your money back but don't ever come here again." I was stunned. I insisted we just wanted the difference. He gave us 1,000 pesos without taking consideration the exchange rate. We paid in US dollars. Shame on the waiter Orlando, for manipulating the bill and shame on the manager for not listening or understanding us. Telling us to not return is disgusting. He should be grateful that we brought this to his attention and additionally, he should make the menu clear! He should have said come back again do we can make it right for you. We spent a fortune at this restaurant. We'll tell all of our friends in Rosarito and California that we will never return to this place that over salts their meats, and over charges prices for ungraded meat posing to be graded. Also, we will tell our friends that our bill was manipulated without our permission. We know better. Ridiculous. Check your bill at "El Gaugo." Or better yet, go to another steak restaurant in Rosarito.

Yelp
This place had all the meats, the prices were American prices. The empanadas were really good, the steak was also great. The ribeye was massive and the veggies were simple, but really good. The fries could have been more crispy and the service could have been better, the waiter wasn't as attentive. The margaritas were really good too.

Yelp
We visited their new location in the Popotla area south end of Rosarito. Very modern & spacious. Love the new space. The service was impeccable. The food was tasty and delicious from beginning to end.

Yelp

Yelp
Steak, salad and potato salad are delicious! Awesome service and ambiance. Everything is good at El Gaucho! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Came down for an early dinner. The argentinian pararilla for 2 was more like for three and great btw. Service was super excellent, our waiters were constantly checkin in, unlike the U.S. where you only see them 4 times: drinks/order/check in/check. Our waiters, there were at least 4, checked in constantly. The salmon dish was well served with veggies as aell.

Yelp
Excelente la comida y la atención, muy recomendable para ocaciones especiales.......................

Yelp
On the menu I ordered from the cuts section; CORTES TABLEADA, 2 compliments of Salad and their flavorful, Potato Salad. Comes with Tender and Juicy, Ribeye Steak, Lomo, Arrachera, Chorizo. The best steaks I've ever had! The salt is imported from Argentina. The steaks are charred in the wood fire, cooked to perfection! The chorizo is homemade which bursts with flavor! Their Queso Fundido accompanied by two bone marrows, served with fresh bread baguettes are the perfect savory blend! Accompanied by an incredible glass of Syrah from Argentina making the perfect pairing! The salad and potato salad also delicious! The service is welcoming and outstanding! The ambiance is all together inviting! I couldn't rave more about this place! It's Just a couple minutes South of Rosarito in a small town called Popotla! It's a must try! I can't enforce it enough! Do not leave Baja without trying this delicious hotspot!

Yelp
Great little place. Very friendly service and GREAT food! Their empanadas are delicious! We ordered their Tableada and it was enough for the 3 of us. (Girls). Very tender meats not to mention their chimichuri which you can buy a bottle and take home. (We did). Super recommend if you want to try something other than the taco places etc.

Yelp
Ridiculously bad place, been twice never ever again! The owner was so rude and was arguing with my husband and charged us for a steak he never ate.

Yelp
Yes, folks! A minimalist-decor style restaurant with authentic Argentine cuisine exists in Rosarito, Baja California, Mexico! As a world traveler, art & culinary maestra, El Gaucho Argentino Restaurant ranks high on my list! It. has the three big factors: atmosphere, service and fine cuisine! Go check it out for yourselves...photo courtesy- El Gaucho Argentino Restaurant.

Yelp

Yelp
My mom has lived in Mexico for over 11 years, and she said this is the best chicken she's ever had. We both had the gauchos salad. Beautiful building on the outside and the inside. A lot of staff and they do speak English.

Brenda F.

Yelp

Yelp
Meat was delish. Reasonably priced compared to LA. But the ambiance was just off. We got seated upstairs and it felt like I was being interrogated...all white with bright bright lights. And on top of that service was slow. So even though the food was good I wouldn't return. Oh and on top of that I guess they've moved a couple times so none of their addresses listed online were accurate..we had to call the restaurant directly for directions.

Nicholas V.

Yelp
Great new building and decor. Food is amazing and service is great ! Glad to be back at El Gaucho

Sonia E.

Yelp
Omg the food was amazing, our waiter Carlos was super attentive and provided us with top notch service. Highly recommend this restaurant, we will definetly return.

Yelp
After reading mostly 5 star reviews we decided to visit this place, place is new, very clean, good service, they plenty of waiters on the floor we tried a couple of appetizers, the queso and marrow bone was good, drinks were good, the only reason I give a 2 star is because we were expecting a great ribeye -we asked for medium well and it came rare, I ask the waiter to have it cook to medium well, they put it on the grill again and when the brought it to us it was way well done. - the meat had the taste that you get when you use previously frozen meat, and it wasn't the best quality, normally in Mexico at places like this they serve meat from Sonora which is one of the best, well this wasn't the case, also the cut wasn't even and inch thick We were really disappointed, in general it was just ok, the chimichurri was just not great, our ribeye was not seasoned correctly ether, if I have to judge the prices I will say that there are better places even for less money, we normally don't mind to pay whatever as long as it's good, we will not be coming back.
google avatar

Joel O.

Yelp
Good food, good ambiance. The empanadas are highly recommended. Service was good as well. They took US dollars or pesos.

Reyna O.

Yelp
The meat at this restaurant is amazing!! A little pricey but worth every penny!! I highly recommend.

Yelp
We came here for dinner with friends when we were in town last month and it was a great experience! The service was wonderful and the food was fantastic. We got the family platter with the various meats along with the potato salad, fries, and the empanada appetizers with each filling. We were completely stuffed and loved the small clean environment. We came home telling friends and family about how wonderful this place was and we definitely will be returning.

Kathleen V.

Yelp
I have had a lot of filet mignons in my life! By far this was the best filet ever!! Beats any filet in the US! Jerry the owner is amazing! So attentive! The whole staff is excellent amazing service! Bread is amazing! The salad was so simple but was honestly the best salad ever. Definitely my go to place in Rosarito!!! Worth the wait!

Yelp
First, I have never had Argentinian food so I was not sure what to expect or even what my meal was going to be. After seeing this place flawless "5 star" situation I though- mm no way I can go wrong-. We got there for early lunch and the place was empty. We got sitted right away, the server brought the menu and took our drink order. My daughter got a lemonade, she thought it could use more sugar. I got a Mate which is a type of tea from a plant native to Argentina. It was the first time I had one and I hope it is not my last. It was delicious! We got empanadas as appetizers, we ordered the ones with meat. They were so hot that we had to wait but it was ok because the server brought us bread sliced for us to try their olive oil and herbs mixture that was on the table. The dip was better than at Olive gardens. We ordered a Lomito sandwish and a prosciutto. The meat in the lomito was to die for! It was so juicy, perfect flavor, tender and it just pretty much melted my mouth. My daughter ate the entire prosciutto and that says a lot since she ussually doesnt eat everything lol Overall check this place out, they have bbq on the weekends. I will try to make it to one of their weekend bbqs, because I have a feeling is delicious! The best part is we ate so much for such a great price! It wont break your wallet.
google avatar

Clint D.

Yelp
Oh WOW! Now the service, food, ambiance was perfect. We got Queso Fondido and a couple of mouth watering Rib eye steaks. We will definitely return.
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
I came down to Rosarito Beach for the weekend and had my first lomito filet mignon sandwich at El Gaucho Argentino... it was so amazing, that I came back the next day at 11 AM (30 minutes before they open) for another one: super tender high quality meat brought in from a cattle ranch in Sonora, Mexico; sweet charred grilled onions; delicious chimichurri sauce;yellow peppers; soft bolillo roll. BEST steak sandwich in my life! $10 Super clean interior & kitchen, outside patio with grill & umbrellas, and BEST of all for me: 2 tv's with every cable station to watch MLB/NFL/ * NEW REVIEW: Sept. 8,2019 Sunday morning: I just left Los Angeles and drove down to my beach house in Rosarito Beach and arrived at 11 AM, fortunately for me the time that El Gaucho Argentino opens up the restaurant on Sunday mornings; I came to the restaurant to have a lomito steak sandwich before I even went to my home ! I wanted to see if the 2 steak sandwiches that I had the last time I was here was an aberration and really as good as I mentioned in my review above; The steak sandwich that I just ate was even better than the first two that I had here on my last trip !!! this time I asked for sliced tomatoes, which they provided from their organic garden that is growing behind the restaurant ; the taste of the steak and quality of it, the sweet grilled onions, the chimichurri sauce and the organic tomatoes with the fresh Bollilo rolls was off the charts!! I asked the owner if any customer has ever complained, or written a bad review of this restaurant, and he showed me a nasty review from some disgruntled customer named 'HINNATA U' posted approx. on September 1. This customer must either be on delusional, or one miserable human being ! The SERVICE in this restaurant and the attention to detail on everything is top notch... it is impossible to get bad service here ! The food at La Estancia, where I have eaten many times in my years coming to Rosarito, doesn't even compare to El Gaucho; the quality of the meat and produce here is as fresh & good as I've had anywhere....so if this disgruntled customer got sick it was probably a lie, or it was a random and unfortunate experience... as for not having hot salsa available, anyone who has ever been to Argentina and eaten in an authentic Asador or Parilla in Argentina, knows they don't serve hot sauce on the tables; rather El Gaucho has a bowl of fresh chimichurri sauce and spicy yellow peppers on each table! There will always be an asshole in every bunch, the ridiculous review posted by Hinnata U. proves it; do you think it's an accident that many people have written 5-star reviews, and then there is this review? UPDATE: 8/1/2020: I had lunch at El Gaucho again in Rosarito Beach; I've written reviews on Yelp before about this restaurant, and I want to make it clear that I'm not a part owner of this restaurant; I don't work for the restaurant; and they're not paying me to write this....so my gushing about this place seems phony, but it's not ! This used to be my favorite restaurant in Rosarito Beach, where I've had a home for 40 years; but now it's my favorite restaurant ANYWHERE ! I give it a SOLID 10 on a scale of 1-10 ! and possibly even higher than a 10 now because their cleanliness and sanitation is off the charts! when I was there last Saturday every time someone got up to leave from a table, 3 employees came with masks and gloves to the table top and the chairs and sprayed it, wiped it and sprayed it and wiped it a second time ! the floors, the bathrooms, the counters, the tables, the chairs are all immaculate! it out does anything or any restaurant I've ever been to anywhere in terms of cleanliness! the food quality is off the charts, and so is the service ! Thank you to Gerardo the owner and his great waitstaff for making this a fantastic dining experience whenever I go there If they served breakfast at El Gaucho, I would eat there three times a day while I'm visiting my house in Rosarito Beach ! Alan Manhattan Beach, CA
