My brother came down from Colorado and was recommended this place so it turned into our white castle... 1&1/2 hrs and 2 police chases later we made it...he had been longing for a regional (Guadalajara)Mexican dish called tortas ahogadas (drowned tortas), we have tried high and low to find a good one... It's a pretty simple concept...a wet torta with spicy sauce... Yet so many get it wrong...
The meat: pork carnitas, they were cooked to perfection...still moist not over fried, very lean (too much fat kills it imo) & flavorful
The bread: perfect! Super crunchy outside, soft inside great for being drenched in sauce... This is where many fail..they serve it on bread way to soft to hold up to the sauce, next thing you know you're eating spicy bread pudding with a spoon...no good...
Now for my favorite...
the sauce: DAAAAAAAAAAMM! On point! Not only did it have great flavor but it was hot! I mean HOT! like a little bit of liquid hell...I'm HUGE on spicy eating and I can say this tested my limits..I should have known it was hot when I ordered.
Cashier: how do you want it?
Me: really hot
Cashier: REALLY hot??
Me: yup!
Cashier: oooOOOK!
Man was it was hot.....half way thru I kinda wanted to quit but by then my endorphins were pumping and I just powered thru it...that sauce pushed the whole meal to another level imo...good stuff...I can assure you it'll be memorable... Fyi,the difference between medium and hot is very noticeable so if u like hot, medium might be too weak, but I'm sure you can ask for so medium sauce to water it down yourself IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE...Lol... Now I just hope I can find a local place that can match...
All in all, tan perronas las tortas, very good...Although, I'm sure i'll pay for it later...
