"This is where East LA residents have been getting their torta ahogada fix for decades, where the ends of the “authentic birote salado” are sliced off, restaurant-style. There are plenty of bargains for hungry families calling in large orders. Soothe the blistered corners of your mouth with ice cold Estrellas, an iconic beer from Jalisco, while browsing black and white photos of old Guadalajara in the heart of East LA." - Bill Esparza

Google
I absolutely love this place. Classic food from East LA. I order the Tortas Ahogadas every time. Get them mild, medium, or hot. I like heat, so I order them as hot as they make them, and they are so satisfying. IMO, the magic is in the chili and the amazing bread they use. Clean. Humble atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Highly recommended.

Come and Check out this little hole in the wall !!! I had the Torta Ahogada combo. It comes with... 1 soda can 1 Taco dorado (papa o frijol) 1 Torta Ahogada (mild or spicy) For $12.56 +Tax So I got that combo with the spicy Torta Ahogada and the papa Taco dorado And This was so 💣 No parking in the front of the building but they do have parking in the back and also street parking across the street.

Great hole in the wall place in East LA on Whittier Blvd. The hot sauce gives the torta the special touch. The combo includes the torta, hard shell taco and a soda for only $11

Google
I had the pleasure of dining at El Guero Tortas Ahogadas, and it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment I walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the stage for a fantastic meal. The Tacos were nothing short of spectacular, featuring a perfect balance of tangy and spicy flavors in the sauce, complementing the tender, juicy meat filling. Their guacamole was also simply amazing – creamy, fresh, and seasoned to perfection! I highly recommend this place to anyone in search of authentic, delicious Mexican cuisine. It's not just a meal; it's an experience that tantalizes your taste buds and leaves you wanting for more. I can't wait to return!

Google

jorge B Jimenez

Google
I'm from Guadalajara, jal. And this tortas ahogadas are really good in L.A.😝👍🏼

Miguel Munoz

Google
Absolute top notch real authentic tortas ahogadas, chill environment a hole in the wall type of place, consider this because I tasted guadalajara style food, if you want the real deal go to ixtlan del Rio in guadalajara but otherwise this is best bet.

Julianna B.

Yelp
Did I drive 45 minutes from the west side to have authentic tortas ahogadas?!?! Yes!!! And I'm so glad I did. No place west of downtown can compare. The bread was soooo soft. The meat seasoned but not over seasoned and the service was so good! The place has booth which makes for the perfect intimate experience with my family. So glad I drove out here :)) Will be coming back!

Edward S.

Yelp
Amazing food. First time trying this spot. I found it on yelp and decided to go try it and was not disappointed. Flavor was there and so was the spice!

Christina J.

Yelp
Food is Amazing!! We travel from San Jose, California to Los Angeles and this is always our first stop and last stop before heading home. We love it

Ludwin R.

Yelp
We are here for the 3rd time and we brought some friends. Just the way I remember. Delicious.

Heidi L.

Yelp
Was looking for tortas ahogadas in the area and decided on this location based on reviews. It is a small outdoor seating area due to covid , and their window service area is a little slower. Those are the only negatives, the service was quick and convenient. I ordered the carnitas torta ahogada, muy picoso - it was super spicy but I enjoyed it. My friend ordered the medium spice and also said it was pretty spicy- which we appreciated. I can't wait until I'm in the area again to try out some of their tacos dorados! Highly recommend stopping by.

Laura R.

Yelp
Bad service! the food was cold and the place smell like sewer! Honestly I don't recommended

Deb G.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall place in East LA on Whittier Blvd. The hot sauce gives the torta the special touch. The combo includes the torta, hard shell taco and a soda for only $11

George V.

Yelp
Very Delicious Wet Tortas! You got to tried them. The workers are friendly and hard workers.

Miguel D.

Yelp
The best of the best tortas ahogadas I've tried in LA Just be careful in the hot sauce

Lorena M.

Yelp
Pozole Blanco at this location is delicious, along with their tostada de cueritos! Their salsa is very tasty and authentic. Yes, the lady has an attitude, but you only see her when ordering, the food is worth it.

Monica D.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall restaurant! All homemade food. Very tasty Tortas Ahogadas! We came here specifically for there home made bread! It didn't disappoint. Outer part was hard which is needed on a torta ahogada.. my dad is from Jalisco and says this was done perfectly! We also tried the tacos de papas and they were ok. If you come here I would say stick to there Tortas ahogadas. The place was small and you have to park in the back which wasn't bad. They have a family pack special which I recommend even if it's for 3 people. Take one to go as you get more for your money

Renee D.

Yelp
As usual. The lady at the register is always so rude! She never smiles. Never says thank you. And always has an attitude. She always quick to take your money. We came once some time ago and she gave priority to other people even though we where waiting for a table. That day we left.

Laura N.

Yelp
It is truly a treat to have homemade picante sauce. What a world of a deference it makes. Just passing by Whittier and the Torta Hogada really caught my eye and the homemade traditional bolillo is more in the lines of a French Vietnamese baguette. Absolutely mouth watering and generously served to feed a Trojan. Took half home and enjoyed every bight after wards and it was delicious having it cold. Parking was easy and the actual restaurant is really tiny. Nothing special just a hole Ma and Pa operation. Prices are reasonable.

Ana S.

Yelp
The tortas are so good! the tacos dorados with beans and carnitas are a must. You can't beat the price.

Miguel N.

Yelp
I consider myself a torta ahogada connoisseur and have tried at least 20 in la. Its all about the salsa with this dish because the torta is pretty much the same everwhere. This salsa was really good and super spicyyyyy. Usually i ask for extra salsa on the side but this didnt need it. As for extra pickled onions to cut some of the heat but overall 10/10!!

Monica R.

Yelp
We all had the tortas de milanesa and they were delicious. The slices of milanesa were freshly made and very flavorful. One torta is super filling for one person. They give you a big slice of meat and lots of fresh ingredients-onions, jalapenos, tomatoes and lettuce. Like having a home made torta for a decent price.

Stacy O.

Yelp
The older lady in the front counter yelled at my dad. She raised her voice at him and he was really embarrassed. We wear a mask and I understand that sometimes it's hard to hear. She told my dad to speak louder and to concentrate on what she was saying. Excuse me? I honestly don't think that's an appropriate way to speak to customers. I get that she was really irritated and in a bad mood. We're never coming back here. No one likes getting yelled at.

Cindy A.

Yelp
Passed by here many times, I was skeptical about trying a new place, but I'm glad I did. Bread was really good. I recommend this place. Tomato sauce was good and the spicy sauce on the side was great. Muy rico.

Morgan L.

Yelp
Even though my Spanish is rusty, I was able to get across what I wanted with the cashier. The food in my opinion was superb. Definitely will return and recommend this place. Authentic and tons of flavor.

Elizabeth E.

Yelp
Amazing tortas Ahogadas....i was taken here by a coworker who lives in the area and they recommended we go. I was not disappointed the bread was amazing soft but crunchy and sucked up all the fantastic sauce. It was spicy but not to spicy goes great with a coke!!

Rachel M.

Yelp
Don't know why I never had the torta ahogada before -- that's obviously the thing to get. It's delicious. Spicy jus-esque sauce poured over a fried pork and bean sandwich on baguette, and topped with pickled red onions. It's one of the best sandwiches I've had all year. The only drawback is this: my hands still smell like it after 24 hours of washin' and rub-a-way-bar usin'. Pinche torta! Park in the back, walk thru the kitchen. The bathroom door for the ladies doesn't really close. Credit cards accepted.

Stephanie M.

Yelp
5 stars for the food, that's why we keep coming back, but the front lady that takes orders and payments is always moody, the first time we went we just tought she was having a bad day so we just ignored it but she's like that all the time, she looks very unhappy with her job so I would strongly recommend someone else to be the face of this location, but not sure if she's the owner..is kind of a let down everytime we go now because of her so we just avoid going unless we are really craving tortas ahogadas no other place we have tried make them better... we used to go almost every weekend but now is like every couple months or so... and her attitude is the same even now that they just do pick ups, my boyfriend asked her a question when he received his order and she just brushed him off... but food is bomb.

Karla A.

Yelp
Small hole in a wall type of place, seat yourself and order at the counter type of place. The torta ahogada is good, bread is authentic bolillo salado and carnitas have good flavor. The tomatoe base sauce is good a bit water down, but still full of flavor. Fresh tacos dorados made on the spot. Parking lot in the back They do accept cc

Saira S.

Yelp
Beat place to get authentic birria ! It's a small place but those are usually the best ! My husband also loved the tortas ahogadas .. he said they tasted just like the ones in Guadalajara

D I.

Yelp
My brother came down from Colorado and was recommended this place so it turned into our white castle... 1&1/2 hrs and 2 police chases later we made it...he had been longing for a regional (Guadalajara)Mexican dish called tortas ahogadas (drowned tortas), we have tried high and low to find a good one... It's a pretty simple concept...a wet torta with spicy sauce... Yet so many get it wrong... The meat: pork carnitas, they were cooked to perfection...still moist not over fried, very lean (too much fat kills it imo) & flavorful The bread: perfect! Super crunchy outside, soft inside great for being drenched in sauce... This is where many fail..they serve it on bread way to soft to hold up to the sauce, next thing you know you're eating spicy bread pudding with a spoon...no good... Now for my favorite... the sauce: DAAAAAAAAAAMM! On point! Not only did it have great flavor but it was hot! I mean HOT! like a little bit of liquid hell...I'm HUGE on spicy eating and I can say this tested my limits..I should have known it was hot when I ordered. Cashier: how do you want it? Me: really hot Cashier: REALLY hot?? Me: yup! Cashier: oooOOOK! Man was it was hot.....half way thru I kinda wanted to quit but by then my endorphins were pumping and I just powered thru it...that sauce pushed the whole meal to another level imo...good stuff...I can assure you it'll be memorable... Fyi,the difference between medium and hot is very noticeable so if u like hot, medium might be too weak, but I'm sure you can ask for so medium sauce to water it down yourself IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE...Lol... Now I just hope I can find a local place that can match... All in all, tan perronas las tortas, very good...Although, I'm sure i'll pay for it later...

Gisela R.

Yelp
The food was good, but the lady at the register definitely has an attitude. She kept asking me how spicy i wanted my food and I was asking my daughter and she didnt even give me a chance when she began to yell. I hope the owner speaks to her because wow!

Tony C.

Yelp
Food takes forever to come out during the weekends. It's so ridiculous there are 5 people working the kitchen and they can't produce 2 simple sandwiches (that's literally what tortas are, aren't they?) in 15+ min. Some one put some Chinese cooks in there, please. Or better yet, have a tuhao buy this place and staff it with Chinese laborers. The torta ahogada is dominated by spicy sauce it's drowned in. Keep giving chances but I still don't get it. This must be some Mexican nostalgia cause the place is a complete shithole otherwise.

Gary M.

Yelp
Okay so I came here based on yelp recommendations but the one spot I tried first had closed 30 minutes early so I came here. I do understand that I came on a weekday 30 minutes before closing but for restaurants that should be no excuse especially for the items that I ordered. I came here with my wife and youngest son who love wet burritos and probably eat at least one wet burrito a week. I wanted them to try a torta mojada for the first time and I noticed that they had good ratings so I decided to give it a shot. Parking was difficult even this late but I was able to park across the street. Once inside the man was very nice and the prices were reasonable so I ordered two tacos, a wet burrito and a torta mojada. Carne asada taco: good flavor and decent size but no good salsa to add on top Potato taco: crispy taco with good amount of salt for flavor but again it was missing some heat Wet burrito: bland and lacked heat the sauce was watery and flavorless so my son wouldn't even eat half because he didn't like it at all. Total let down for all three of us. Torta mojada: good bread but bland sauce and the pork inside was good but not a lot of flavor so my wife said "if this is a torta mojada I think I will stick to wet burritos from somewhere else." The restaurant food let us down and I don't think we will ever come back. None of the food was terrible but it just wasn't good and my family didn't want to finish their plates.

Javy B.

Yelp
For some reason my friend always wants tortas ahogadas. Last time he was here we went to a place by my house and the sucked. Today I found this place on yelp, so decided to go. I must say that the carnitas torta ahogada is by far the best I have had. I even want to say that they are better than the ones in Guadalajara. Believe you me, I will be back when in the LA area.... I finally have a reason to go into LA...

Blanca C.

Yelp
This is a must try place! Their tortas ahogadas are delicious!!! A must try!! First time here and I fell in love!

Sarah M.

Yelp
First time here and I would have never found this place if it weren't for the good yelp reviews. As we had just left el mercadito due to the herd of people in line for gorditas, I had to yelp the nearest place with great reviews. It's a cute small location and the line and wait was super fast. Our food was ready in no more than 10 min so that already beats el mercadito. My burrito de carnitas was amazing and also, the torta ahogada had so much flavor! We're definitely coming back here again. Even the Jamaica was delicious. I live in whittier and will still drive out here for a torta! You won't regret it

Anthony M.

Yelp
Very straight forward .. the service was horrible, not as expected .. the place was very unsanitary and the lady who runs the register/owner is very rude to customers.

Francisco B.

Yelp
The tortas in this place are bomb and so are the tacos dorados the only negative aspect of this place is the size of it's dinning room which is a bit small but the delicious food makes up for it.

Mari S.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant last night for tortas ahogadas. They each cost $6.99. I got 2 tortas to go, and received them nicely packaged and with all the condiments and sauce needed. I have to say they were quite delicious. The tomato sauce was on point and the hot sauce was HOT! The only con about this restaurant was the service. The only thing the cashier said to me was, "Credit or debit?" If customer service makes or breaks your dining experience, this may not be the place for you. If you only care about the food, then I definitely recommend you visit and try their torta ahogada. I will definitely be visiting this place again.

Alicia B.

Yelp
Torta ahogada taste bad bread was stale and sauce was watery .salsa was not good either it was not even hand made it was from a bottle. Birria was also not good beef was hard to chew n lady taking the order was rude n rushing for me to order she was not happy at her job she looks mad all the time n doesnt let u talk she talks for me and over me rude old fat lady

Felix L.

Yelp
This place is legit!!! The best Torta's Ahogadas outside of Guadalajara. I had the not so spicy torta soo good, make sure to get those extra potato tacos and four sodas. You'll definitely going to need them.

Jorge V.

Yelp
Wow.... Spicy but delicious.. I order a torta full ahogada and my mouth was burning but delicious.. I'm going to keep coming, services it's great.

Judith N.

Yelp
The torta is good but I didn't get enough sauce. I felt the sandwich was a bit tough.

Junior D.

Yelp
Small place but great tortas ahogadas. Parking can be hard to find. Small dining area, room for about 24 people total. Best tortas ahogadas in my opinion.

Daddy E.

Yelp
Great authentic Mexican food with reasonable prices. Family owned and operated with very friendly service.

Mando C.

Yelp
Tortas el guero is a tiny place in east los they dont provide good customer service you have to make an effort to get the waitress attention to make an order and she is also the cashier she also gave me the wrong change but got my 5 missing bucks back after i explained. The Tortas haogadas wer just ok but not wat i was expecting they wer kind of small and lacking flavor the sauce was not redish in color and more like a broth it didnt look like the ones in the picture The tacos the papa and requeson wer also just ok for the los price Now the tostada de Pata was very good and authentic slso the jamaica was refeshing and tasty i might give another try if in the area who knows

Gio T.

Yelp
Super authentic Torta Spot!!! I got the Carne Asada torta and I couldn't believe how spot on it was! The place wasn't very big only had about 8 tables but every single one of them was packed with people speaking Spanish and loving everything they were eating!! They people behind the counter are very welcoming and friendly and will take your order in Spanish or English! Thank you for the hospitality will definitely return

Evelyn C.

Yelp
Worst Tortas Ahogadas ever. The sauce for the Tortas has no flavor and it was really watery, the bread tasted as if it was old bread, the posole has no flavor and they added way too much onions. Don't waste your money.

Andy F.

Yelp
Yelp did a great job at picking this place for some Tortas Ahogadas. For those of you who have no clue what this is, it's a Mexican sandwich (basically it has pork, which is then covered with a tomato sauce and onions, and you choose how hot you want it, medium or hot.) This is a famous sandwich that comes from Guadalajara Mexico. Having tried them in Mexico this is by far the closest I've gotten in the States. This has become the spot to go, even though its about a 15-20 min drive, its worth it. Try it out, I highly recommend it.

Benjamin Q.

Yelp
The tortas ahogadas are incredible... super tasty and extremely spicy if you order it "bien ahogada". If you want to experience the sensation of eating one from this restaurant, then swish around some gasoline in your mouth and insert a lit match. Fire, baby!!! These are some of the best tortas ahogadas north of the border. East LA consistently has some of the best food around and this spot is a clear example. Come down to Whittier Blvd. and enjoy a torta ahogada with a couple of ice cold beers to put out the inferno.

Shane K.

Yelp
Tortas and pinches like in Guadalajara! Delicious! Will for sure be a return costumer.

Emilio C.

Yelp
This place has to serve the most authentic "tortas ahogadas" in LA and I consider myself qualified to make that claim. The bread is 90% there --"birote salado" is only baked in Guadalajara, the altitude and climate conditions make it impossible to replicate anywhere else (there are even rumors that they fly in their bread to LA)--, the sauces are on the milder side and preparation is particular (I prefer my 'deflamed' onions inside the torta, not on top) but I would really say this is almost the real thing. Tortas Ahogadas, literally means drowned tortas (torta is a sandwich in a slice of a baguette). There are basically 4 ways to ask for your drowned torta: 1/4, half, 3/4, or full. This means the chef will dip your torta to the corresponding degree into a pot with very hot/spicy sauce. So this "temperature" really indicates how hot your torta will be. The torta is then "drowned" in a milder sauce over a deep dish and served sauce and all. I recommend getting 2 fried "tacos de papa" or potato tacos with meat on the side to complete your experience. Even thought for me the "full" or "bien ahogada" this is not impossibly hot (the way it should be), I really enjoy going back every once in a while to satisfy my torta ahogada craving. Note: these tortas are best experienced around noon with a slight or moderate hangover. They are the best cure for it.

Marianela R.

Yelp
Dear Tortas Ahogadas El Guero, I will miss you as I return to north cal. I will miss how you made my mouth feel like a burning fire! I can truly say it was love at first bite. Thank you for providing the residents and visitors of East Los Angeles with delicious and spicy tortas! For those of you who haven't tried these tortas. Please do. And if you're into spicy stuff like I am, ask them to dip your torta into the hottest sauce. IT'S HOT! Enjoy!

Jazmin O.

Yelp
I'll make it quick: BEST TORTAS AHOGADAS north of Guadalajara. Go to el Guero for tortas ahogadas and you won't be disappointed. The hard shell tacos de papa are also delicious. I would review other items if i didn't always order the torta ahogada, as hot as they can make it, which is h-o-t. Pack the kleenex 'cause your nose will be running... Small place, big flavor.

Yessica A.

Yelp
Really good torta de pierna. There is no pictures since we were devouring our tortas that's how good they were. Highly recommend this place.
