Where to Eat Around Valley Fair and Santana Row

"As far as ambiance is concerned, El Jardin can’t be beat. Offering light bites and cocktails in a tiled garden patio flush with leafy green plants and string lights, it’s the perfect way to kill time before your dinner plans or draw out the evening after your meal. So order tacos and tequila, then settle in to enjoy the live music because this open-air venue hosts contemporary Latin pop singers and traditional mariachi bands." - Paolo Bicchieri, Johanna Harlow

It was dinner time and Edeline was my server tonight. She is so sweet, attentive and made my experience at El Jardín the best with her hospitality. Thank you Edeline!!

Having drinks on Friday night with live music was an awesome experience at El Jardin, but having a wonderful server made it even better!!!! Janet, our server, was very attentive, friendly, and such a fun time! All the recommendations she gave us on appetizers like the nachos with guacamole were delicious!! Not to say their spicy margarita she recommended was a 10/10, letting us know she really knows her menu and the bar! Definitely going to be going back! If you ever happen to be in the San Jose area, El Jardin and Janet as your server is a must, hands down!! 🙌🏻

We show up on a Saturday around 4pm and there were plenty of open tables so they sat us right away. We order the guacamole, chicken flautas and barbacoa tacos. Guacamole: 3/5 - they charge $16 for an small dish of guacamole and its not very fresh. Chicken flautas: 5/5, really tasty. Those were some of the best flautas I’ve ever had. Barbacoa tacos: 3/5, meat was dry and pretty salty, also the chipotle salsa that came With them wasn’t something that i feel complemented the tacos and my daughter felt the same way but the tortillas are freshly made and they were pretty good. Atmosphere is definitely 10/5! I would still go here for the atmosphere even if the food wasn’t the best.

Had an awesome experience at El Jardín Tequila Bar! Our server Janet was super friendly and attentive the whole time. The drinks were on point — great flavor and presentation. Perfect spot to hang out with friends and enjoy good vibes. Definitely coming back!

The atmosphere was amazing! Nice music, wine, and tacos~ We will definitely be coming back. Thank you Cristian H for the great service!

Google
Atmosphere is so great, prime location, right at Santana Row. We tend to get a table even on weekends. Drinks are overpriced - one pitcher for 60 bucks. Sigh. That feels like a lot. And food is unfortunately quite a disappointment - we have tried the nachos and barbacoa flautas and ended up with upset stomachs the day after every time. Taste is avg.

I've been to El Jardin a few times. Staff is a bit slow and unorganized...so if you're in a rush, you might want to look elsewhere. I've stopped by for a drink and some food before. More recently...drinks: cafemigos $17 hazy IPA $10 There is a 5% small business surcharge. Food/drink on the pricier end, but to be expected with Santana Row. Garage parking + street parking available.

Loved the vibe! Live music, heaters , legit Mexican food and Mezcal drinks! Ismael was a great host and we had a great time. Highly recommend

Yelp
It was my first time visiting San Jose and my cousin had recommended this restaurant to me. I am so glad she did the atmosphere was amazing ! Our server was the absolute best made us feel like we were family and she was very attentive and quick. All the food that she recommended was amazing plus the drinks ! If you ever get a chance to go here ask for Janet, she's amazing !!

Yelp
I can't believe this was my first time trying this restaurant!! It was a success!! We were happy with everything we ordered but the Flautas de pollo were the real winner. I think we could have done without the chips and salsa and the chips and guac and just gotten another Flautas de pollo. The chicken Caesar salad was also very good, probably the best I've ever had. My sister and dad enjoyed their drinks. We sat outside, all seats are outside, and it was very nice! Perfect weather. Also they don't have high chairs for babies!

Yelp
Not worth the time or money! We were extremely disappointed with our experience. The service was extremely slow at a time when there were very few patrons, 3pm. We were seated close to the bar and had to flip our seat cushions over, as there was bird poop all over the cushion. Just nasty. Our server was friendly and directed us to scan the QR code for the menu, they DO NOT have any hard copy menus to look at. The online menu is a long list that you need to scroll up and down to see all the items. They also DO NOT have a bathroom, they give you a card with directions to the two nearest bathrooms. We started with our drink order. They had no Modelo Especial, so my wife got the Negra. The drink came out quickly, considering we were right next to the bar. We also ordered a DON QUIXOTE and a SPICY MARGARITA. Both of these drinks were too sweet for our liking. We moved on to the food. We ordered the Canicas de Cochinita. After a moment, the server came back and told us they didn't have any of those. So we ordered the Croquetas de Cochinita - which they also didn't have those available. The server told us that those two items are actually the exact samething, but labled with different names on the menu. Okay!? We finally figured out that they had ALITAS QUE SORPRENDEN, so we ordered those. These chicken wings were just okay. They were neither spicy and lacked peanut taste. They came with a weird dipping sauce that lacked taste. The highlight of the meal were the tacos. We got carnitas and enjoyed the meat. THe CHURROS RELLENOS DE CAJETA were amazing the sweet dipping sauce was very tasty. The service became extremely slow at the end of our experience. We had to request water refills from a passing by server. When it came time to pay, the pay system didn't work and server disappeared for awhile to "fix" it. We will NEVER be back.

Yelp
Had a great time with my husband on a Saturday night. Even though it was busy we were sat immediately. Got to enjoy music by a DJ and good drinks! I love a spicy mezcal cocktail! This smoke jalapeño margarita was delish! Ordered the flautas and they were okay. Chicken was more flavorful than the barbacoa (which had no flavor unless you really soak it in the sauce).

Yelp
Stopped by today for a quick drink at the bar after dinner with my best friend. We went straight to the bar where Rhiannon hosted us & took care of us. The bar is an excellent stop for quick drinks & vibes. I normally sit at a table but we only wanted to drinks. Bar is def cool. Get your seats while you can! About 12 seats at the bar.

Yelp
We came on a Friday night and were sat right by the live music. While the music was great, it was pretty loud. We asked our server if we could switch to a table further away from the music, she happily moved us over. Although pricey, as any other restaurant in Santana Row, drinks and food were great. The mole tacos were my favorite!

Yelp
Decided to pull up at El Jardin this evening for drinks and appetizers. Although they don't have happy hour on Thursdays we still enjoyed some margaritas, papas nachos, which were a hit, and warm sweet churros. Service was good and attentive.

Yelp
This is stylish spot that's perfect for a night out with friends or date. Definitely make a reservation if you are coming on a weekend Ordered a few drinks, tacos and loaded nachos. The nachos were fresh and flavorful. The veg tacos were loaded with corn salsa - juicy, cheesy and served with rich deep consommé. The staff were very attentive and helpful. They helped us customizing some of the cocktails to mocktails. The decor is dreamy - string lights, lush greenery, colorful telework and open air seating that feels like you have been transported to a chic courtyard in Mexico. The evening gets upbeat with live Latin music and a good crowd. Absolutely a good place for happy hour or a weekend night under the lights

Yelp
We ended up here on a Saturday night as a result of Amex platinum's deal with Resy- we had no idea what the place was about except that they have Mexican food. My word it was lively, LOL. Turns out it's a very beautiful and large open air bar in the middle of Santana Row that also serves food. We were seated right away as we had a reservation. The waiter was nice- I think- I couldn't hear anything he said over the music that was blasting. The food was alright; the shrimp Caesar was fine, the guac was good, the mushroom taco was a miss. The mocktails were super great though!! Really interesting flavors and just gorgeous to look at. I feel like if we were in our 20s or 30s we would have really loved the atmosphere, I would go back for the mocktails during the week when it isn't so loud, and I'd get the guac again, but not dinner. TL; DR: go if you're young lol

Yelp
Cute little outdoor bar. I came as a party of three the last hour before closing and we got seated at the tall tables. We saw a few open regular tables and asked if we could move, but our server said they're only for parties of six. A few minutes later, a different server sat a party of three at one of the open regular tables.. We ended up ordering drinks. I got the Don Quixote - reposado, spicy mango puree, tajin with a mango candy straw. Refreshing and just enough spice. Our server pretty much disappeared and never checked up on us after that.

Yelp
Came in on a random Monday to grab some drinks and food with my coworkers. The workers were very nice to put together a table for us since we were about 30 people! They were able to sit us within 5 mins and had the qr code ready for us with the menu. My table ordered a bunch of drinks, appetizers, and food which came out very quickly. I really liked the outdoor seating and live music playing in the background. Really brought the vibes! Love coming here and will come back!

Yelp
Service is good, and the food is also good. However, please double-check your receipts carefully. We were almost overcharged $80 for churros! Thankfully, we noticed the bill wasn't correct and got it fixed.

Yelp
Traditional Mexican street food with a twist! @eljardin.sj is nestled off to the side in the middle of lively Santana Row! This is actually more of a bar with "bar food" but the food options make it seem more like a restaurant because the dishes are sooo good! I don't think I've tried a place where ALL of their slow-cooked meats were actually tender and juicy, cooked perfectly. Service is excellent and the night we went, they had a DJ. I usually don't care for mezcal, but their cocktails are very well made, particularly Frozen Lips, where you can taste a slight bit of mezcal but then it smoothes out leaving no aftertaste or burn. HH (monday - wednesday) 2-6pm Dog-friendly! * Pozole de Pollo (highly recommend!) * Tacos: Carne Asada, Carnitas, Tinga de Pollo, Barbacoa, & Birria * Roasted Jalapenos * Churros Rellenos de Cajeta * Cocktails: Gin Rosado Paloma (highly recommend!), Jalisco Sling, & Frozen Lips (highly recommend!)

Yelp
Celebrated my boyfriend's birthday here with a group of friends and we definitely enjoyed it! We went here on a Friday night so there was a live band which was a definitely a plus! They played such good songs and kept the vibes up!! We had a pretty big party so the food did take some time to all get out but the waitress did a great job taking care of us and checking in! I got the chicken flautas and my boyfriend got the carne asada fries and both were delicious! They were very generous with the portions, which we really appreciated! Would love to come back and celebrate future birthdays here!

Yelp
Connected with some close friends for lunch at Jardin on a recent trip back to San Jose. I had passed this restaurant so many times while walking through Santana Row when we lived here but this was my first time eating here. It was a beautiful day to sit outside in such a beautiful location. There was lots of seating + seating at the bar. The staff was great. I had Birria street tacos and a Mojito. Which were really good. But the start of the show is the location and atmosphere. A great spot to have some good food, good drinks and chill.

Yelp
El Jardin located in the heart of Santana Row is a great place to go for drinks with friends. It's located outdoors with a big seating area and good music playing. As for the drinks, I have tried the Sangria, Paloma, and the Liquid Alchemy with popping boba! You can't go wrong with any drink on the menu here. Service here is great! This place is always busy and the servers still manage to check in with your table every so often. I would recommend coming in with a reservation as a line typically does form during the weekend. Parking is relatively easy to find, there are multiple garages in Santana Row. The Olin garage is the closest to the place!

Yelp
The food wasn't as good as I expected but service was great. thanks to our server, Edeline who made our dining worth while.

Yelp
I have been meaning to try this place since 2018, but now that I've been, I'd say that you'd have to be drunk af to have a pleasant experience here. This place is mainly a bar, so maybe I shouldn't place so much stock in the food, but I'm a foodie and I was hungry so let's get into it: - guac (comes with chips): not terrible but so generic they probably bought it as Safeway and kept the $16 profit - carnitas nachos: I'll acquiesce that the meat was tender but the cheese sauce so watery there was a pool of thin liquid at the bottom - birria taco: there wasn't even any birria dipping sauce, just lamb on a tortilla - shrimp Caesar salad: decent - churros (comes with 4): decent - persimmon mocktail: the only reason this review isn't 1 star. This was the best mocktail I've ever had because it didn't just taste like juice! It was complex! While our server himself was nice, they were clearly understaffed because it took forever get water once seated, to order, to get utensils, to get sharing plates, to get the check, and to correct a mistake on the check. Lastly, they were playing both music over the speakers and had a live band nearby, which call me an old lady but that's too loud to talk to my friends. Bars can have alcohol and good food and good service so what's el Jardin's deal? Logistics: - outdoor seating only - paid parking garages nearby - mocktails available

Yelp
I haven't been to El Jardin in a few years. It's improved so much since the last time I came. The overall vibes is fantastic! They used to do live mariachi and it's great to see they still have the live music. The food and service has improved so much. Because this place has such a great vibe it's good to see how the food and drinks match now. The waitress we had was super attentive and helpful. Food came out quick and everything was very fresh! The drinks are much stronger and are worth the price. I recommend the Mojitos and the Guava margaritas! Will definitely stop by next hot summer day!

Yelp
Amazing service and great drinks and food! Salsa is exceptional! (However be aware that the best taco is only M-Th)
google avatar

Yelp
The drink are very great here! Vibes here are great, great for coming out and having a drink with your friends. Stephanie was our server and she was great and wonderful!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a beautiful space. I can't wait to come back for more summer vibes. If you don't like sitting under trees with the possibility of things falling down on you, then don't sit under the trees. The service was great and we were offered a photo. We took the photo but we declined to buy it. The portion sizes were pretty big. I ordered the Carne Asada Fries and it was big enough to share with 3-4 people. I thought it was good and I would order it again. We tired to corn, it came in a can with a side tajin. It was a little too watery but it was still good and tasted authentic enough. My boyfriend really liked his wings, they were huge. We also loved our drinks. I think I had the margarita and my bf got the red sangria.
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Vibes are spot on here with the outdoor ambiance with live music. Pretty busy on a Saturday afternoon but luckily didn't have to wait for seating. Got the tropical margaritas and chips and guacamole. The tropical margaritas were pretty good, not overly strong and had a good level of sweetness. A bit tart too from the lime and raspberry puree. Chips and guacamole were pretty standard. Chips were good but guacamole could've used more flavor. Probably wouldn't eat here for a meal given the plentiful options nearby but would consider this spot again for drinks and vibes! Service was great.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Outdoor bar at Santana Row with plenty of seating & great vibes. We only ordered drinks since it was a quick stop in between meals but the nachos from the table next to us looked delicious. Would come back to try it. Downside was a slightly uncomfortable encounter with a photographer (not sure if they were affiliated with the bar) who took our photo & said it was for a social media post but they came back with the pictures printed out & framed. We felt pressured to purchase the framed photo for $20...
google avatar

Donna T.

Yelp
Vibes are always immaculate at El Jardin. Especially on a warm summer day! They do have heaters for colder days as well. Yes, the prices are pretty high here but what can you expect from being on the Row? The drinks here are delicious and strong. The one I have pictured is Liquid Alchemy and it has strawberry popping boba! My favorite one though is the Jalisco Swing which is always very consistent and easy to drink. It also comes in a cute coconut-like container. We usually just come for drinks and eat elsewhere but have gotten some small bites such as the flautas which were pretty good. The nachos were kinda whatever though, so I would skip on those. The bathrooms though are a bit of a walk and the music is kind of Mariachi style where they have live bands. I kind of wish they played regular music like they used to in the past, but nonetheless, the ambiance is still delightful!
google avatar

Angelique G.

Yelp
Great service ! Great food and drink, went on a Tuesday for a friends birthday love the vibes !! Thank you Jeanette

Yelp
Ambience -5 star, right in the middle of Santana Row. Service - 3 start, our server was pleasant, but barely checked in on us and didn't refill our water for a while Food- 3 start overall , We ordered the Flatus de pollo it was very mediocre and did not have any flavors 2.5 star. Papas Puercas - 3 start, limited on flavors, quantity was decent. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for authentic and flavorful food.

Rupinder S.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place because it's in such a central spot in Santana Row and looks like it has a great vibe, but the actual experience was disappointing. Our waitress took an unusually long time to get to us and kept walking by despite us trying to flag her down multiple times. If the place had been packed, I would've understood, but it was mostly empty for a Sunday night, so the lack of attention didn't make sense. On top of that, a surprising number of items were unavailable--even drinks--which is hard to excuse on a weekend. You'd expect them to be fully stocked on a Sunday. The menu situation also made the experience worse. It's one long, endless scroll on their website that combines brunch, weekday, weekend, and drinks. It's clunky, hard to navigate, and not at all helpful when you're trying to quickly show a server what you'd like. To make things more frustrating, the card that gets handed to you at the front with the bathroom map and tiny QR code feels like such a waste of paper. Why not make that card slightly larger and include the menu? The QR code takes up so little space anyway. Either put one on each table (and leave it there for all guests) or actually make that card useful by listing drinks and food options (at least the ones that are actually in stock). And then there's the furniture. My table was wobbly, and I noticed several others had the same issue. For a place that's all about presentation and vibe, it feels like a basic detail that should have been taken care of. Overall, for a place that gives off such a nice vibe at first glance, the execution really fell short. I'd recommend skipping this spot until they figure out their service and menu issues.

Yelp
Wanted to sit and relax a bit after some shopping. They didn't have any seats at the bar so we went to the host to get seated. Host wasn't there and a few of the bus boys saw us standing there but didn't say anything to us or try to flag down someone to help us out. We eventually got seated at a high top table. The area itself is nice and it's partially shaded. Although it was a warm day, it didn't feel too hot sitting outside. We ordered some drinks and chips and guac. Drinks were fine. Guac was a little bland. Overall, a decent spot to sit a bit, but I'm sure there are better places to eat and drink in this shopping center.
google avatar

Aditi J.

Yelp
Went here on a Friday night and it's quite busy, it was a 20 minute wait to get seated for 2 The margaritas and Mai tais were great but the service could be better, we waited almost 30 mins for our drinks. The food was nothing extraordinary, stale guac and esquites and average tacos, but would recommend just for the vibe
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
We came on a Saturday night and was able to be seated right away. They had live music but I prefer sitting a bit far away so it's not too loud. They serve tapas but the portions are quite big and filling. We also got one cocktail each but they ended up making them twice and gave us the extra! Other restaurants probably wouldn't give us the extra ones, so it was nice of them to offer them to us.
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
Omg such a cute time here , the food is good, service is great ! Janet took care of us and was so attentive! Definitely would come back !
google avatar

Philip S.

Yelp
My experience was great here and the ambiance was on point!! Food was hot and fresh. I ordered the Birria tacos, and that thang was smackin!! Shout out to my server Janet!! She was amazing and took care of my every need! Definitely going back soon. If you go ask for Janet, she's the best.

Christine R.

Yelp
Enjoyable, outdoor experience, with nice menu and plentiful taco options. Food was good. They had live music, but my only complaint is that they have speakers everywhere, so there was really no quiet spot to sit with the music as background, instead the music felt like foreground. .
google avatar

Jane D.

Yelp
Our first and last time we'll be going here. This place was not it! Food was so over priced for really not being impressive at all. Came here on Monday for lunch and they were not busy. They sat us at a side table but ended up in the sun by the time our food came. Server never really came around and other servers ignore you so it was hard to get anyone's attention. Food took a long time to come out and when it finally did one item was made wrong. They took forever to remake and bring back out! $22 for 3 crispy tacos with no sides is insane!! Chips and salsa also not being complimentary at a Mexican restaurant is insane!! They don't have a kids menu so this place is not kid friendly. The claim to be dog friendly but obviously not kid friendly. What a joke! Oh and there is no bathroom on premises. You had to walk down a ways so that's very inconvenient. Ended paying $90 for 3 courses, chips and salsa and no drinks!

Isabel V.

Yelp
The music was great and the drinks were strong. I had a great time and it was the perfect way to start of the month of November. Plus our server Stephane took great care of us!

Tes G.

Yelp
Edeline was very attentive and gave us very good suggestions. We enjoyed our dinner and her quick service made it even better.

Javier A.

Yelp
Great service by staff especially our server Stephanie. The ambiance and environment was great. The churros were delicious.

Karina C.

Yelp
Great ambience with live music, strong drinks and excellent service by our waiter Jesus! Also, the food is BOMB, would recommend the nachos with asada and the flautas de pollo.

Nathan D.

Yelp
The service was amazing and Jesus was even more amazing !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
A very popular spot on Santana Row, and with good reason. It's lively, the staff is friendly, it's outdoors, there's a great happy hour and it's always a fun spot. Always worth a stop!
google avatar

Munirah T.

Yelp
I was not a fan of this place at all. I went on a Friday night and the music was so loud I could barely hear my date speak. We ordered guacamole and a margarita pitcher... the total was $92. Crazy lol. What made it worse is that the guacamole wasn't even good :( The service was decent. I'm going back in the daytime to see if I feel differently.

Herklin A.

Yelp
Great environment! Great food! Great service by Stephanie! Highly recommend getting the Paloma pitcher!

Solodel

Yelp
I love the atmosphere. Great weather tonight, and the bartenders are amazing. Will come back!

Alexis V.

Yelp
Our server Stephane was really on top of everything and made sure we were taken care of. Plus the drinks were strong!

Yelp
We recently had a great family outing during Labor Day long weekend at El Jardin with our two little young kids. The bar is perfectly located in Santana row and is quite vibrant. The drinks and cocktails were amazing, food was delicious with amazing music that lifts your spirit. The place was clean and service top notch. We had a lot of fun. One pro tip is arrive early so you can get the right seating to enjoy food, drinks and the music !

Yelp
If you're looking for a place with great drinks and delicious food, this is the spot for you. My friend and I decided to grab a snack here while we waited for our reservation at another restaurant. She ordered the tropical margarita, and I went for the spicy margarita. We both love our margaritas! Of course, we needed something to eat, so we ordered the asada nacho fries. They were super delicious, and we were surprised by how large the portion was--it came in a small pan! While the fries were tasty, there were some downsides. There wasn't a lot of carne asada on top of the fries, which wasn't a deal-breaker, but it did take a while for us to get our order. However, good food always takes time, so it was worth the wait. Since it is an outdoor bar, I recommend bringing a jacket if it's cold outside or if you tend to get chilly easily.
