Where to Find the Best Tacos in Jacksonville, Florida | Eater Miami

"Traditional Tex-Mex is on the menu at El Jefe in Jacksonville’s hip Murray Hill neighborhood. The restaurant is known around town for its puffy tacos, which start with a fresh taco shell fried in hot oil, so the taco expands, making it puff up. At El Jefe, the puffy tacos get filled with adobo braised chicken, refried beans, or picadillo, then topped with shredded lettuce, tomato, and cheese. Wash the tacos down with one of the many margaritas on the menu."

Went here for the lunch special today which allows one several great choices to pick from. The environment is relaxing, the food was great and the service good. Will definitely go back and will highly recommend to friends.

Very good grub. Got the El Jefe dip and poured it over Spanish rice. Steak, chicken and lots of shrimp. Very good chips and salsa too

By far the best Mexican restaurant in town. My wife is Mexican and she agrees that the food is authentic, great prices and the services is second to none. Their margaritas actually have tequila in them and not just sour mix. I have found my forever Mexican joint. Great job to the owner and staff.

Loved the Sunday specials—free cheese dip, Texas Rice and $3.50 Texas Margaritas. Our server was friendly and attentive. It was our first visit and we will be back!

We went once and it was great, we came back a second time to try taco Tuesday and had an awful experience. We both worked as servers in college so we understand when things happen and are very patient when we go out to eat, but it was one problem after another. We were seated & waited almost 20 minutes before we had to tell someone we hadn’t been greeted. 10 more minutes passed and someone finally came over. We ordered cheese dip to start and it was thick, and almost tasted sour. We ordered our tacos and the chicken was so wet with a watery grease that the tortillas were soaked. We finished what we could and asked for our check, we gave her our card & she was gone for 20 minutes. We saw her walking around, helping other tables, not sure what else she was doing. Made me extremely uncomfortable knowing someone had taken our debit card for 20 minutes. When we finally said something to the front , there was no sense of urgency. I don’t completely blame the server but the restaurant was definitely not running well. As avid Auburn/Opelika diners & ex service industry workers we know you can have poor service but good food or good service and poor food, can’t have both.

El Jefe is a hometown hero. It’s not trying to be anything that it’s not. It’s slightly gringo Mexican food with crazy good prices and great service. I love the place. The lunch specials are 7.95 with tea. Even steak fajitas. Who loves you like that? Nobody else. Enjoy.

Well this is some is the best Mexican food I’ve had in a long time. Yall don’t sleep on it! Perfect Tamal, all the sauces are distinct and seemingly homemade, fresh tortilla chips, awesome queso, and the service is great.
