Portland's Standout Mexican Restaurants and Food Carts

"This Beaverton food truck can be spotted a mile away by the large plume of smoke rising from its immense charcoal grill, where chefs grill chickens “al carbon” in front of the cart. El Jefe serves the chickens whole, in a combo plate, in a taco, in a burrito, in a quesadilla, or even in a salad, juicy and smoky with char. If chicken isn’t the only desire, visitors can choose from a variety of other standard taco meats, as well." - Krista Garcia, Eater Staff

Where to Find Outstanding Tacos in Greater Portland

"Operating out of a food truck just south of downtown Beaverton, El Jefe brings a variety of Mexican dishes and smoky chicken to the west side. The specialty here is obviously the “pollo al carbon” or charcoal-grilled chicken, but there is also a good selection of other meats that can be served as street tacos. Diners should also keep an eye out for specials, like spit-roasted al pastor. El Jefe is also expected to open its first brick and mortar on Pacific Highway in Tigard next to Mike's Drive-In sometime later this spring." - Nathan Williams, Ron Scott

The Best Burritos in Portland, Oregon - Eater Portland

"While far from many other points on the map, El Jefe’s next-level pollo ranchero makes it worthy of the ultimate burrito pilgrimage. El Jefe’s team grills chickens over a huge charcoal fire throughout the day, giving it a smoky flavor that can be hard to find at other burrito spots. For those not in the mood for chicken, El Jefe also has options like birria, al pastor, and lengua." - Nick Woo, Janey Wong

Holy smokes. Great great food. Terrible location, on a corner ( of course next to a camera light), awkward food truck location as far as pick up window and ordering being right next to each other. I have given this place 2 tries and here is my summary from my experiences: Kind of has a DMV vibe as far as ordering and waiting what seems like an eternity for you food on little restaurant coasters which all lost power on everyone that had ordered at the time (6 people), so they opted to shout to everyone who ordered what, on my second visit, I ordered online a half hour before I arrived (still waited another 20 minutes) and food still wasn’t ready. I only ordered meat only and rice. I don’t think I will be back, possibly search for other vendors with more convenient locations and possibly more of a smoother running system for online ordering and in person ordering. Both seem to be about 1 hour waits for food. But again, great great food. Please make these changes, I would love to come back.

Google
Haven't had grilled chicken this delicious anywhere else. Everything on their menu is delicious, and I love that their food is always fresh. Their customer service is always excellent, they're super friendly and courteous. It's a must try, and you'll definitely come back! ;)

Google
Bro. The burrito was HUGE and sooo delicious ! Chicken was tender. Cannot wait to try more offerings from this place. Grilling whole chickens as we waited.

Emily Barrett

Google
We got their whole chicken with sides (pinto beans, mexican rice, salsa, and tortillas) for $24, which was excellent. The chicken is super flavorful and cooked perfectly. We could easily make 6+ meals from everything. We’ll definitely be back to try more, but I highly recommend that whole chicken meal, esp if you need easy meals for the week.

Google
I recently had the pleasure of indulging in their quesobirria tacos, and let me tell you, they are among the best I've had in a long time. The flavors were rich, and the cheese pull was nothing short of spectacular. The service here is commendable--fast and friendly. The staff exudes kindness, making the experience even more enjoyable. What caught my attention, besides the mouthwatering tacos, was the tantalizing aroma of the chicken being grilled right in front of you. It's an olfactory delight that sets the stage for the deliciousness that follows. The prices here are fair, especially considering the quality of the food. While I initially went in for tacos, I couldn't resist trying a quarter of their grilled chicken. It smelled too good to pass up, and the taste lived up to the aroma. The only downside worth noting is the limited parking spots. It's a popular spot, and rightly so, so consider avoiding peak hours to sidestep any inconvenience. Trust me; the food is worth the visit, and you won't be disappointed!

Google
El Jefe Mexican Grill is located right at the intersection of Allen and Lombard -it’s too easy to find, just follow the amazing smell of the grill. Parking is very limited during the lunch rush from 12-1 so I like to park across the street and walk over. I enjoy visiting businesses where the owners and employees are so passionate about what they’re doing. This place is all about the grill. They have roasted chickens and all of the salsas that you could want to take home with it. They have fantastic tacos the service is quick even during the rush. They’ve got it all… except for low carb/ no sugar drinks. You might want to take your own drink if you are on a low sugar diet and want a refreshment with your meal ☺️

Google
Excellent Mexican food in the area! Learned about it through recommendations from a foodie friend and surely does not disappoint. It's not exactly in the "nicest" location in town, but the truck itself is pretty nice and warm, well-organized too, not a bad place to wait for some warm meals. Service is nice and actually pretty fast. They have amazingly spiced chicken here, with some good sides as well, would highly recommend. I'd also recommend the champurrado drink, especially during a cold day, they give you a lot and it's quite delicious.

Amber Purkapile

Google
A new favorite place to grab and go. The truck looks well kept; which was initially what got me thinking 'Hmm, I'd like to try that place.' Food is delicious and plentiful for the price.

Yelp
10/10 recommend the Vampiro Tacos. 10/10 love the free smells! Great staff and 5-8 minute wait time.

Yelp
we have been looking for very good Mexican food and not having any luck other than Mestizo. We almost gave up after many fails. We have driven by this place and didn't even know this is where we were going to try next. The best burrito so far in PDX! The only thing we want for the next one is cheese included... I figured that was automatic but I guess not. The burritos were packed full of everything and heavy!! Not gigantic but very good size and fully round like a cylinder, like they should be, a hand held burrito. We tried chicken and asada and they were great, lots of flavor and no fatty pieces. They got my order wrong and were quick to make it right and replace the wrong item. We will be back.

Yelp
I visited El Jefe Taqueria and Mexican Grill for dinner recently. There's no seating outside the truck so I got my burrito to go. There's a small parking lot. They're known for their pollo asado so I got a pollo asado burrito. I chose the hot salsa out of the salsa options which included both red and green options. Service was good. The burrito was stuffed well. The salsa was tasty but not spicy. For me, it was between a mild and a medium. The chicken was spiced well but it was a little salty. Aguas frescas were listed on the menu but they didn't have horchata when I was there. I don't know if they had an other aguas frescas. Overall, I did enjoy my visit to this truck but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back.
google avatar

Patricia V.

Yelp
The rest of the meal was OK the roasted Jalapenos were great Very disappointed. That I got the junk of the chicken.
google avatar

Arun S.

Yelp
Went there after a while. Quesabirria tacos were amazing. Meat was super tasty inside tacos. Consume was very watery. Chicken is just fine. I feel Daddy's chicken a bit better than el jefe especially with the marination Daddy's is more flavourful along with sautéed onions and green peppers. You don't get those here a lot. Breast pieces were bit too rubbery. If you don't put in an order online or preorder early wait time for chicken can be 30-35 mins. Red hot salsa was great to go with grilled chicken
google avatar

Theresa C.

Yelp
Their food is so good! The whole chicken is very tasty, and the ones we got weren't dry. Their birria tacos and consommé are what they are famous for, and worth the try. Service at the food truck is friendly. You can call and order ahead to skip the wait. Their locally owned. Include them in your list to check out. Your stomach won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Was really excited to try this place after driving by several times. It's in Beaverton on Lombard and Allen. Just follow your nose - it's a food cart with big open grills - pretty Smokey and yummy smelling. Place was crowded on a Sunday but line moved quickly. Got the whole chicken (no sides). It was ok. Flavor was very subtle. Outside of the chicken was pretty good. Inside was bland. Nice staff but was hoping for more
google avatar

Yelp
I'll have to be honest, I'm updating my review because I believe this place is one of the best Mexican food trucks in Hillsboro/Beaverton area. So what that they get their orders mixed up sometimes, as much I wanted to be mad there were couple times I did enjoy the order I didn't place. It was till good
google avatar

Saadat I.

Yelp
Moved to Beaverton from LA, worried I'd have to say goodbye to top-notch Mexican food. Thankfully, I stumbled upon El Jefe, and it was a game-changer. This food truck is a hidden gem. Everything I've tried has been spot-on--authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and those hot sauces are something else! Great variety, from tacos to burritos, all delicious. El Jefe made Beaverton feel like home. Highly recommend to anyone missing genuine Mexican cuisine. It's not just good, it's a standout in the area.
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Food is amazing. I wanted to go back for more. Service was great and the staff is friendly. There is no indoor or outdoor seating, so we ate in the car. No pictures of food as it was inhaled.
google avatar

Poya L.

Yelp
Oh my goodness. This place is unbelievable! Their tacos are absolutely DELICIOUS! I usually get the carne asada and/or pollo tacos but today I got carne asada, pollo, and carnitas tacos. All of them were super yummy. I've also tried their burritos and burrito bowls before, but the tacos are my favorite. This is my go-to place for when I'm craving authentic tacos. If you've never visited this place before then you have been missing out. They grill their meats daily and you can taste a slight char in every bite. That extra flavor is divine and really elevates the tacos in every way possible. It's been a few months since I've been here because I live pretty far away. When I finally bit into a taco, I almost CRIED. I missed their food so much. If I could I would come here every day. The staff is also very friendly. Be aware though, there may be a wait during the lunch and dinner hours. They have online ordering available to make it more convenient for you to pick up your food (they are take-out only). All that while keeping their food at an affordable price... Run, don't walk, and get yourself some tacos! So, so, SO GOOD.
google avatar

Hilda P.

Yelp
The worst food I ever had quality of food awful and also very expensive I would not recommend at all there's better places than that think twice before you go I got food poisoning before I decided to gave them another chance, bad choice.
google avatar

Cici G.

Yelp
I was in the mood for a quick lunch and this place popped up and I am so glad it did! This is in a parking lot so no outdoor seating available, it's a pick up and go type of place. Food: 8/10 overall, good portion sizes for the price 1. Chicken bowl: 8/10, nothing bad to say about this meal, it came with plenty of meat that was delicious, Spanish rice, pico de gallo, guacamole, cheese and lettuce. Overall this bowl was great and plenty of food, you will not be hungry after eating this bowl 2. Shredded beef: 8/10, great portion of meat, good value for the price.. seasoned pretty good. Good place overall and I would return again.

Laura S.

Yelp
I was walking my dog and craving a piece of bbq chicken. For two bucks I got a drumstick with some thigh meat attached. It was delicious and exactly what I was craving. My only request -that I'll make next visit --will be to give me the drumstick on one of their paper napkins instead of putting in styrofoam container that I immediately disposed of.
google avatar

Rossa P.

Yelp
I always wondered what the taco truck would be like because the bbq smell is so nice, and there is always a long line. Finally, today I tried and wow... For the price, the quality and portion size is really good. -a whole chicken -3 tacos quesabirria & 1 consome It was all super delicious and filled me up! Next time it's their street style tacos.

Julius G.

Yelp
Love this place, reminds me of pollo loco back in the 80's in LA when it was great. If I want chicken that reminds me of back home it's going to be this place. Great deal on a whole chicken meal with 4 sides, tortillas and salsa. It can easy feed 5 people. Great tasting chicken to dine in or take home. El Jefe does an excellent job packaging your food when taking food to go. We picked the following meal. Whole chicken split. 4 sides. Two rice, one pinto bean and chips and guacamole. Your choice of two salsas from pico, medium and hot. El jefe also sends you home with great thick tortillas to roll up your chicken for tacos. I know it's a lot of food but El Jefe also has smaller meals choices. I also decided to split a 4 Quesabirrias Y Consome. The consome is the juice of the gods, excellent job El Jefe. When I have family in town I'm pickup food from el jefe. Great tasting food, service and price.
google avatar

Marlarissa M.

Yelp
The best grilled chicken. Found it by smell one day driving by and have been back several times. We live across town but the trip is always worth it. I usually park on one of the side streets instead of the crowded parking lot.
google avatar

Shane W.

Yelp
We tried a variety of things, and we were impressed with all of them. The al pastor tacos had a tasty marinade and soft tortillas. The birria and the consume were delicious, and the chicken had a great grilled flavor. We tasted three different salsas, and they were all very good.
google avatar

Zelda H.

Yelp
Food is delicious! The Birreria is amazing. I stop by the food cart probably once a week. Portions are very generous and pricing is very reasonable.
google avatar

Mariko K.

Yelp
I haven't had a ton of birria, but this is my favorite by far. I don't know how to describe it, but the flavor just hit all the right notes for me. Getting the birria to go is an excellent value, $15 for four meals! Staff are friendly.

Roger B.

Yelp
Generous helpings for the price. The birria is incredibly flavorful. I order three street tacos and barely finish the third, the meat is piled so high. The place is always busy, but the service fast and friendly. I love that it is a food cart with a big, black, barbecue pit right in front. When they are in full cooking mode, the smoke billows out over the street, enrobing everything around in those mouthwatering aromas.
google avatar

Chi D.

Yelp
We are stuffed. The food was delicious and affordable. We always drive by and I have been so curious, so happy we finally tried this place. We will be back for sure.
google avatar

Mitchel L.

Yelp
Good food each and every time I return. Whenever we are out and about and thinking about places to eat. El Jefe is always said in those conversations. Hope that you will take some time to stop by and try their tacos and salsa. Ive also heard they have a brick and mortar store in Tigard, can't wait to go check it out too.

Kris P.

Yelp
Fantastic food for a Food Truck and friendly staff and quick. Best chicken meal with beans p, salad, fairly reasonable.
google avatar

Christopher T.

Yelp
Food was excellent but parking sucks. This place is one of the if not THE BEST Mexican food carts around downtown Beaverton.
google avatar

Shimeng F.

Yelp
Why haven't I discover this place earlier?! You will have to try this taco place. They do not have a place to sit, so take out or truly street style taco. Sunday late lunch option for me and there was a short line at the food truck. I ordered carnitas, asada, and two pastor. The meat are delicious and the dish come with grilled onion and peppers. I got to try their famous birria consomé and it is the best! Love how crispy the taco shell and cheese is!
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
To go only. Possibly the best carne asada tacos I've ever had.Definitely in the top 3. Excellent chorizo tacos as well.Do yourself a favor and give them a try. I'll be back. So will you:)

Sarah M.

Yelp
Some of, if not the, best tacos in the area. Service is very friendly, food is delicious and great for the price. Wjll definitely be back!
google avatar

Hannah H.

Yelp
Finally a business I can give a 5 star reviews! Excellent customer service and freaking delicious food! Smells incredible all the time, great prices and they've increased their opening hours recently! I love this place. You can even order for pickup online, so convenient. They have a really good menu and they've never been out of anything I ordered. One of the few businesses that I can say only good things about. Hard to find a place like this these days, it's a treasure.

Heidi W.

Yelp
Love this place! Have ordered many things and they're all awesome. Their smoked chicken game is out of this world! I'd say the salsas were just standard tho. Not bad but not amazing. Definitely go for the chicken tho!
google avatar

Patrick D.

Yelp
Great little spot, especially if you live nearby (like me). Tacos are totally stuffed! We ordered the taco plate plus a meat bowl. The bowl was huge and had way more food than I had anticipated. Staff was super friendly. Food was so good and really hot the spot. Someone else's review remarked the terrible parking, which I agree with. But I live down the street, so it was not an issue for me. There's a small plaza across the street. Maybe park there if you're only going to be across the street for a few minutes?

Maryam

Yelp
Delicious, hot and fresh birria. Really indulgent but also very good. Their salsas are also super good.
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
El jefe taqueria & Mexican grill was perfect! We ordered the birria which came with 4 tacos per Order along with consome. It consome was flavorful and not too oily. That entree was $10 each. We also got the pineapple jarritos which was $2.50. The best birria in the Portland surrounding areas. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Jon W.

Yelp
Staff is friendly, the parking is horrible.... ad bad as parking can be so I usually drive by and if there is an open spot I pull In. 9/10 times no parking so u drive by The food is great and the salsa Roja is blazing fire and I'm down for it .. taking 2 stars off for the location and missing side dish on my order I had to walk back and grab... it was o ly a side of beans but I had to rip my bag open and check the order to realize I didn't get what I paid for , if I fot home I would have been mad.. But I put a taco Pic up and the place is tasty.. they really need a new spot..
google avatar

Kyle C.

Yelp
We ordered 15 steak tacos, 20 chicken tacos, and some chicken. This is not my first time going here and sure won't be my last. This is my favorite food cart on the west side. The chicken they cook is some of the best chicken I've ever had in my life. They don't have a catering menu, but they were nice enough to do this out party. Luis took great care of us, along with his other workers. They are very accommodating, and gave us extra sauces to ensure that we did not run out.
google avatar

Luna H.

Yelp
I unfortunately have no photos of the food because we devoured it immediately. Salsa was delicious & only $3 for a large one. Portions were huge & well worth the price of it all. I have been wanting to try this place but was always deterred at the amount of people waiting, but we finally gave it a shot and it was 100% worth it. The wait wasn't even long. I just wish the quesadilla had more cheese. It's not much of a quesadilla with just meat. I guess that's a personal preference, but I'll make sure to specify I want very light meat next time.
google avatar

Elyssa S.

Yelp
Just go! This place was incredible, the Birria Tacos are to DIE for, we wish we would have ordered more. Had every intention of taking pics but the second we opened it that went out the window because we just wanted to dive in. The guy that helped us was insanely nice and hooked us up with a bag of chips and a container of homemade salas too which was also ahhhmazing. We will be back again and again. Gonna have to try the whole chicken next time, with a side of tacos of course!
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
One of the best chicken dishes I've had. Super simple, yet flavorful. The person working the grill was also a delight; he gave out free chicken pieces to people waiting in line and said hi to everyone. The Whole Chicken Meal was such a steal at $22 with tortilla, rice, beans, salsa, and, of course, a whole delicious chicken. Love the tenderness and smokiness of the meat from being grilled on opened charcoal grills. Also, the amount could easily feed 4 people. Now I know why there's always a line here!
google avatar

Garry L.

Yelp
Food, service, menu all great. Okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, okey, yada, yada, yada, yada, yada,
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Tasty food, customer service was amazing, their staff is very kind and super helpful. It's easy to find parking since it's in a shopping center. It looks super clean as well
google avatar

Ali H.

Yelp
Incredible! We scarfed our tacos so fast we forgot to take pictures will be back again to try more salsas and the rest of their amazing menu! Very nice staff too :) we parked across the street to walk over and order. They have online ordering available with a QR code too.
google avatar

Colleen L.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican food to get here! Their avocado-cilantro salsa is BOMB. I'm from San Diego and this is the best tacos I've found so far that can compete with home. If I have leftovers, I toast the tacos up on a hot skillet and the taco gets crisp and crunchy, even better the next day! Took my friends here and we've got it almost every time we get dinner together. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
This is one of the best taco trucks around for the smoky grilled meat they offer. You can smell the nice aroma from far, we know this because we found the place from smelling the grill when we drove by. You get plenty of food for what you pay for, I do think there is room for improvement with tortilla, but that can be overlooked easily with everything else that they are doing right. Like others said, parking is tight, and there is usually a line, so be prepared for that.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Simply put, the best street tacos in town. The burritos and quesadillas aren't bad either. You owe it to yourself to try this place. I'm tempted to ding it half a star for having a horribly inconvenient (and always full) parking lot, but the food is just too good. Legitimately one of the best places to eat in all of Beaverton.
google avatar

Hailey C.

Yelp
LOOOOVE their bbq chicken and avocado salsa! Excellent birria and consume as well! Have to say one of the best places in town for tacos and chicken. The other location in Tigard is not the same at all. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jaison D.

Yelp
One of the best tacos in Beaverton. I am still wondering why haven't I noticed this place whenever I search for some Mexican food.!! The Birria was the simply awesome. Loved it's flavor fullnesses. The Consommé was refreshing and rich in flavor to sooth in this cold weather Kids loved their grilled chicken but for me it's little salty ( I am usually less salt guy). Staff were nice and approachable. Parking is limited and tight suggest to park nearby neighborhoods
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
Awesome closes thing I have found to home !!!!!. Fast service and the smell of the chicken on the grill

Ariauna B.

Yelp
Ten out of ten my burrito was enormous and every bite was perfect. I thought I would be waiting a while because there was a long line but I had my food in five min
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Went back a second to finally try the Consome and tacos. This is basically the French dip of tacos! We got carnitas, asada and lengua! They were all really good but asada was the best for me, it had tons of flavor. The broth was really rich and tasty!
google avatar

Su-jen Y.

Yelp
If you come here, you have to order their chicken. We ordered the XL chicken when my friends came to visit and the chicken, salsa and tortillas were really great. Personally I don't eat beans and rice with my tacos so can't speak to that but otherwise this is a great meal for the friends and family.
