My husband and I went for lunch today. I haven't been for many years and my grandparents used to take me in the 70's. My husband had a margarita, and it was great. Our food was wonderful and I got a little misty eyed thinking about how my grandad would have enjoyed it too. Thanks for a delicious lunch with a side of sweet nostalgia. And our waiter, Joseph and all the staff were awesome too! We will be back! Eat local!

Always great to have especially the Taco dinners!! I get beef and regular beans and rice! Good atmosphere and great price & they do have a great early bird special we did that one time and great amount of food for the price. I will have to say last night the rice seemed a lot fresher than normal but I’m always happy and full when I leave!!! Sopapilla are good also!!!

We went here and didn't know it was endless taco day! Food was so amazing, just the right amount of spice for heat. Our waiter was amazing and the restaurant was warm and inviting. Food came out pretty quickly and was plentiful! Definitely check it out, especially on taco Tuesday when the tacos are endless!!!

We often venture to this place to enjoy the excellent food. It’s just great. Everything I’ve ever had here is wonderful and the service is fantastic. I love how fizzy the drinks are and the big deluxe burritos are wonderful. Tacos also to die for by the way. We are West siders but always find excuses to go down south to hit El Mexico. If you know you know. If not you need to know so go check it out!

we'll give you another 100 points for your time. Extremely busy Friday evening. Staff very friendly and seated promptly. Efficient service. Food came out in timely manner-hot, very tasty. Chips and drinks refilled as needed w/o being asked. Waiter filled order by memory. He was excellent. Very considerate. Joseph provided my birthday reward as coupon didn’t come in mail.

I ordered nachos and asked for the beans to be on the side. This is i a togo order, and I got a Styrofoam plates worth of cold beans, with jalapeños, no meat,chips on the side and then I also ordered combo fajita with extra guacamole, which cost me four dollars I got four tortillas no guacamole, no sour cream. The whole thing was horrible. Will never again order from there.!!!!

My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant in Wichita. Their pork verde is *chefs kiss*. The fried tacos are amazing. The service is ALWAYS spot on. I don't think we've ever waited more than 15 minutes for food. The restaurant is always clean.

Ordered via Uber Eats because...long day. I had the Monterey tacos, rice, and an order of chili con queso. Let's start with the queso. Mmmmmmm...I usually do not like the yellow queso, but this is wonderful, with just the right amount of spice. The food came in individual containers, which kept it nice and warm. The pork was really quite delicious; tender and good seasoning. The rice was a tiny bit disappointing. It was a little mushy. The pico also came with limes, which totally offset the rice. If you are eating in, a great place to order from.

Good service. I liked the fried taco shells. The beef was good the chicken had no flavor.

Excellent food, and the best wait staff in town! It's like dining with family! Lots of parking, and no noisy TVs blasting away in the restaurant. We were able to visit amongst ourselves and the staff kept the chips and drinks refilled right on time!

So the service is good and the food appears quickly. I have gone here since the 1970s. I love the Monterey special. However. This is not authentic Mexican food. The aforementioned dish comes with a ton of sour cream and green olives, for example. Set your expectations.

This is a recent update of what I posted in Feb. We went through Uber Eats and I got the Deluxe Burrito with beans, very disappointing, it still tasted like they don't know wha seasoning is, my girlfriend said the taco she had was very bland... The owner will probably apologize and hope future experiences will be better, there will be no more reviews of this restaurant,,,,,

We've been going there for several years and enjoyed the food and the service has always been great. But the last couple of times we've been there the food seemed very bland. Didn't have the same taste as before. Not sure what is going on.

We visited on 10/19/24. As always very clean, staff was friendly & promp! I have always loved the Chips & Salsa for many years, that is until last evening. The salsa recipie is now changed for the worse. It no longer has the signature taste. I sure will not be going as often as I have over the past 25 years.

The food is amazing and always has been. I've been going there since I was a kid and have always loved it. The service is always top notch.

Very good food; service is prompt. I especially like the deluxe burrito; it is HUGE though. I usually have to get a to-go box and take some of it home. They keep bringing chips and salsa (both mild and hot). Prices are good for what you get. Cocktails are a bit overpriced. Two things that I don't like: 1. It is always very cold inside so I take a jacket, even in the summer! 2. If you order to go they don't give you any chips or salsa. It is a small thing but if you dine-in chips and salsa comes with your meal so what's up with that?

We stopped in last night for dinner. Service from Philip in the bar area was great as usual. I had the all meat burrito and my daughter had the nacho supreme with spicy queso. Both were outstanding. El Mexico is a great option for Mexican food in Wichita

Ate here for the first time and really enjoyed the beef taco dinner. It brought memories of the how Mexican food was when I was a kid. The chips and salsa were crisp and flavorful. The service was excellent as it was friendly and prompt. The restaurant was very clean everywhere I could see. The only recommendation I can think of is the lack of music, but it was pretty busy so maybe I just couldn't hear it. I will definitely be back to eat again!

Me and my mom go to this place all the time, and it's always amazing! The service here is great, and everyone is so nice. The food is delicious and never fails. The tables are always clean, and so is the surrounding area of the restaurant. We love this place and come here very often.

Since we moved out of state years ago and came back to visit Wichita this was a must do stop. We likely have not are here for 20 years and it brought back so many fond memories. We split the deluxe all meat burrito as there is no way we could take down a full one. Now I could not even take down half. Still great food. Great service after all these years.

El servicio fue rápido. Me costó 27 dólares con propina. ¡Yo disfruté mi visita! Fue una experiencia de 4 de 5 estrellas. ¡La más importante es que pude pasar tiempo con mi familia!

Family Reunion there a few years ago. My Family went to the original location in the 80's. Still Good, But not the same. The Burritos Pork or Beef with whole Beans, Baked with Cheese, Taco's Fried, Beans and Rice were The Best!! A Lady used to wait on us, and knew exactly what we wanted. We had a choice of Salsa or Pico. We could get great sides of Guac and even sour cream, xtra cheese etc. without an extra charge. Everything came out of kitchen that we could see from our table, Fresh and Hot Always!! Miss those days!! When we came to Your location for reunion, It was good, But Not The Same. Told by Chef or New Owner that Recipes were The Same. Sadly They are Not. A Lot of OREGANO. Should Be More Balanced. Maybe in the future we will try a visit again. We don't live in Ks. anymore.

A newbie Wichitanan, stopped here because my husband grew up eating at this place. Really good! Enjoyed the food, classic take on Americanized Mexican food. Very clean, nice atmosphere, plus had a great server who never let us run out of chips, salsa, beverages or tacos- cause Tuesday Tacos, all you can eat special. Definitely recommend trying it out!

Still my favorite Mexican food even though I now live in San Antonio. The cheese enchiladas with the chili sauce are great but don't pass up the tacos. The beef tacos fried in a flour shell is my absolute favorite and I've only found them at places in Wichita, KS. I'm really curious why only there??? Beans and rice is also always spot on.

I grew up in the neighborhood and enjoyed many meals here in years gone by. Apparently changed hands over a decade ago. So looked way better than the last time I was here. Way way better. That was a pleasant surprise. The server we had (they sat us near the bar) was the coolest, kindest, best server ever. Really. The food. Not quite as I remembered. We had two dishes. A beef flour fried taco and a Monterey Special. Pretty good but not spectacular. Chips and salsa delish. Next visit back will probably skip a repeat visit.

They may be locally owned BUT it is not the Villars, the original owners. I went in this evening to place an order to go. They ask EVERYONE if they want to tip when I said no the woman running the cash register loudly announced that I was not tipping. I will not be eating at this restaurant again. was that code to do something to my food?!

Best service and excellent food. The cheese alone makes it worth going! Fantastic tacos. I've never been dissatisfied when I've gone here and that's mostly due to the staff, but the food does taste very, very good.

What happened to the food here? I overheard someone say this is the "white people's version" of Mexican food. We came for lunch. The "salsa" that came with the chips was in a squirt bottle, tasting more like catsup than anything else. It was mild beyond mild, not that I wanted a hot sauce, but come on, catsup with some spices? No. When our lunch came, I asked for queso. It tasted like watered down canned cheese. This is why I never order mac-n-cheese in other places, because canned cheese tasted weird. The queso didn't even taste like it should, nor was it creamy. Oh, and what was with the random onion in the bottom of the bowl? The taco was good, though kind of greasy. However, there was no seasoning on the meat. Instant rice is my next complaint because I wanted Mexican rice. Nope. I also didn't like the canned beans with no effort made to season them, either. Bland. Disappointed, because I ate here a long time ago, several times and always found it delicious. I guess there must be something wrong after the remodel and probably new ownership. There are plenty of other Mexican food places in town that I haven't tried yet, so I will go eat at them and see where I can find better Mexican food that is more "authentic" than this place. I'm not trying to be mean, you just aren't Mexican enough for a return visit from me. I gave you 5 stars because the register guy was disappointed that I said the food was decent. With reluctance, I said "delicious" so he would smile, but I had to lie when I said it. My entire table wasn't happy with the waitress, who was rude after we asked her to come back when we weren't ready to order, seemed put out when I asked for queso and actually sighed when we asked for a go box. I almost didn't tip, but maybe she was having an off day.

This is still our favorite Mexican restaurant in Wichita. The food remains great and we have yet to have a server that wasn't attentive and personable. The place is always clean and definitely should not be labeled a 'hole in the wall' (although they have the proverbial good food of one. Our kids, who like most kids can be picky, get excited when we treat them here. I also appreciate how responsive the owner is here on Yelp, that is rare and shows their desire to please their customers. A new thing that I love is their rewards program.....it is a great plus and rewards you for eating there with discounts and a free meal coupon for your birthday. So far we have celebrated my wife's and son's birthday and look forward to my daughter's and mine! Pull the trigger and give it a try they will win your business :)

My fiancé and I love coming here regularly for the welcoming atmosphere and great customer service. The food has always come out hot and the taste is amazing. I throughly enjoy their tacos and burritos!

Awwwww man!! They changed the salsa. I grew up eating El Mexico and I come bacto Wichita once a year and this is always on my list of favorite restaurants to eat at. Food is ALWAYS great, but the salsa..... not as good as it used to be. it's thicker now. Definitely can NOT get tacos like these in California!!! INCREDIBLE!!

I've been going to this restaurant since I was a little girl, it used to be super affordable and just a great place to go when you wanna eat out. ive noticed prices went up ridiculously high, I noticed this when I went to eat there yesterday now normally I wouldn't complain about such a thing, but when I went yesterday, me, and my friend and my son had sat down for maybe all of 10 minutes, then we order. when our food came out to us maybe 10 mins later, which was great. Until 2 bites into my friends food she pulled out a long hair! this happens, but it had ruined my appetite so I asked for a box for my food and my sons food. When I went to pay she informed me she took off the hairy meal and my total (with out a tip) was $45, for me and a child to eat one meal and have one glass of soda they charged us $45!!! ive been coming here with my son for years and have never spent more than $40 INCLUDING the tip!

Stopped by here as google brought up this "Mexican?" Restaurant. My daughter was wanting something savory on the way home. ....... This Is The Most GENTRIFIED Mexican(?) Restaurant I have ever had the displeasure of eating at. I want to say..... the server was amazing. A Very pleasant and doting tall Caucasian man. Even gave us a small bowl of their yellow dip (wasn't queso) complimentary as he overheard me say "I've never been here before". The salsa tasted like cold marinara.... And when we asked for spicer salsa, we were brought out some green concoction that looked spicy ( could see the pepper seeds) but tasted like spicy cardboard...( let me explain, it was spicy with ZERO FLOVOR). My daughter ordered Uno cheese enchilada........ How do you mess up a CHEESE enchilada? Moving on, I had a taco salad..... Not gonna say much more on it other than it tasted like lukewarm puke. My man..... who's fairly easily satisfied.... Went with chorizo hoping the natural flavor of this pork would get him through the meal. He was correct In conclusion, again let me reiterate my server was FANTASTICO !!!!! In my humble opinion.... This restaurant could benefit from out- sourcing an authentic Hispanic who understands the cuisine and can uphold the authentic Mexican taste that we were hoping for. Shoulda had a margarita!!!!!!! The nastiest Mexican food I've ever had in my life. Their food is so blending put salt on the french fries. The beans just tastes like lard. The ground beef is not flavorful like they described. The meat wasn't even hint of red as if they attempted to put paprika or cayenne pepper on it. Lol... I can't even believe how nasty this food is...they use a fried flour tortilla for the taco in which I've had it before but this one was soggy and you taste the flower more than anything else in the taco you can tell that they use fresh avocado to make the guacamole that's a good thing but NO SEASONING and I don't know a cream of a used to stretch it. So to sum it up NO to the tacos NO to the tostada NO to the enchiladas NO to the french fries NO to the beans and rice NO to the guacamole....maybe try their alcoholic beverage? If you do let me know how it was!

My kids took me here for lunch and the food was awful. They didn't even eat theirs. I ate a couple bites of mine. My Sprite was flat so they did give me a Dr Pepper. What a wasted Mothers Day Lunch and $50. Definitely won't be returning!!

$55 food? called about missing meal. Cynthia told me I had all my food and hung up on me. extremely disappointed w the customer service especially in a pandemic. hope owners know she is the face if their business!

ATTN:THIS REVIEW IS ABOUT THE LOCATION ON OLIVER BUT I CANT FIND THEM I THINK THEY MAY HAVE CHANGED THEIR NAME. Hot damn this place is the shit! My family have all worked at El Mexico when they were young and anytime we come back to Wichita we eat here. I forgot just how good that Chili cheese burrito is. So creamy filled with tender meat and topped with the best chili and cheese. We also had Puff tacos, so crunchy yet chewy and perfect. Word to the wise get the small burrito its still huge.

After a couple more visits and dishes I feel obligated to further emphasis that my opinion of El Mexico Cafe is that they only do three things right: 1. Iced Tea 2. Guacamole 3. Tacos. Damn good Tacos. And that's, that.

There's a reason this place continues to win best taco in Wichita. Because it is the best taco in Wichita. Their delicious fried shells that come packed with meat are exactly what you need when craving Mexican food. Great prices and a great staff make this an ideal spot for any group size or age range. For a part of town that doesn't get a lot of love, make the trip down to the south side for some tacos you'll definitely enjoy.

Wichita's best fried flour tacos (although Marco's Cantina is a close second) If you've read any of my reviews, I'm sure you've heard the "gluten/dairy/rice/soy/blah blah blah free" speech, but the relevance of that here is that I will cheat and deal with the consequences of that cheat to come eat the tacos here...they are just phenomenal. The all meat burrito is also to freakin die for, but add the cheese, for sure. I usually order a pork dish at a Mexican restaurant and this burrito is still one of my all time faves. The white cheese dip is also very good, and I could just drink the mild salsa (although just a step below Margarita's Cantina's salsa). They also have whole beans in addition to refried, which is a nice alternative and they are outstanding! We've eaten here so many times both before and after the ownership change several years ago, and I will always save a cheat meal for this place.

Pleasantly surprised to eat here for lunch today. It's been at least 3-4 years since our last visit and that time was less than desirable considering the food and service. We had EXCELLENT service today and the food was delicious overall. We've come here off an on over the past 15 years and had move away for 8+ years, trying it again when we'd visit but did not enjoy. My husband had his go to of enchiladas which he'd always like the sauce, but not so much the last time we came. He was happy with it this time. I had tacos last time and was disappointed with the lack of flavor in the meat, got the same thing this time and was pleased with the flavor (not a fan of the cheese but overall it was delicious with the salsa added). The hot salsa was flavorful with a nice kick and same with the cheese sauce. We'll very likely go back and have it again, hopefully the service is the same as it was today!

This is our go to Tex-Mex joint on the south side. It's been around for a long time. Solid Tex-Mex with great service at a fair price. Definitely check out their specials. For the the people that like to trash places because their food isn't authentic Mexican food, well go pound sand somewhere else. These people know who and what they are and strive to have great service. Our server did a fantastic job tonight. His parents own the restaurant and he along with his brother and the cast of others always do a good job. Tonight everyone was moving with a purpose. That's great to see. Oh yeah and they are Big Chief fans!

Located on South Seneca, El Mexico is a great lunch spot for those working in the area of downtown. The staff is friendly and fast. I've always been seated within a few minutes of walking in and have chips and salsa served within a few minutes. I love their tacos and cheese enchiladas with chili. I also love that they serve whole beans as it's a nice change of pace from other restaurants. They make margaritas from scratch as well. They offer a great rewards program also.

Delicious hole in the wall Mexican joint! They have DELICIOUS enchiladas and their salsa and guacamole is are both phenomenal! it can get pretty busy but always worth it!

Family members went here on Tuesday and on Friday last week. The tacos that were ordered were barely warm and greasy on Tuesday, no one would even refill our drinks. On Friday, we went there again to give this establishment another go. We were seated near the bar, couldn't hear anyone talk because of the TV and the heater was directly on our backs. No one cared to check after trying to get someone's attention. I can't say the food was much better on Friday. We were served barely warm food, rice that was not fresh but old and dry, beans that were dry. No refills on our drinks after trying to get our wait staff's attention. I think we'll continue to pass on this establishment for a long time.

Been coming here for 20+ years and always enjoyed it. The last few times though, the service has just been terrible. Tonight we decided to head back out there (it is across town from us) in hopes it would be ok since several years have passed since our last visit. However, it has seemed to just get worse. Our waitress was not friendly in the slightest and rushed us throughout our entire visit. After getting our checks, before we had even completed half of our meal, there were three discrepancies in our tickets. When we addressed this with the manager, she just became argumentative. Turns out the waitress had rang our order in wrong and there were additional charges for items that were included with what we actually ordered. Even still, she advised she would speak with the waitress instead of fixing our order and charging us correctly. This will be our last visit to this restaurant.
