The 15 Best Tex-Mex Restaurants in Houston

"The aroma of handmade flour and corn tortillas welcomes you at the entrance of El Mirador, a low-key Mexican diner in Magnolia Park. The piping hot tortillas, along with an all-day breakfast menu, make this spot an East End beacon—hence the recurring lighthouse motif. The interior feels like someone patchworked together a Tex-Mex restaurant, a mid-century soda fountain counter, and a grandma’s seaside cottage. But everything starts to make sense when you pull a tortilla through jammy huevos divorciados or dip into a bowl of homestyle menudo. It may be eclectic, but the simple food is all the light you need. " - gianni greene, chelsea thomas

I dined with a group of 7 friends here for lunch. We had been on the Houston ship channel boat tour and were looking for something not to far away. We saw that this place had overall good reviews and what better to have when on Houston's east end than Mexican food! Service was prompt, the place is very clean and while it has a decor reminiscent of the 1960's with it's metal trimmed Formica counters and brightly painted walls it had a nice homey feeling like a good neighborhood diner should! We all got something different, I opted for a lighter lunch and had the grilled fish which came with rice and a salad and some steamed vegetables. The fish had nice spice to it, not to hot or anything but aromatic. I think it might have been tilapia but it was very fresh. Others has enchiladas and tacos and all were good. Our server kept our drinks refilled, we were so hot when we arrived. Was this the best Mexican food I have had? Well, maybe not but it was cooked and served by people who apparently love what they do and want to please their customers.

The food is authentic and very flavorful! On Sunday evenings there is karaoke and it is a lot of fun! The waitstaff is very nice as well. The carne guisado and coctel de camarones are very delicious!

If you want comfort food, this is one of the places. They also make handmade tortillas so that's a plus. The only downside is that the salsa can be old sometimes so you'll have to let them know.

We both had the number 3. Upon arrival, I saw that the portion matched the price: small. Can't complain about it, the seasoning was great and the portion felt "right" in which we didn't feel like we needed to be rolled out, but our appetite sated. I do recommend it, and will update after I try their breakfast options. Another good local spot to support.

Food wasn’t good. Fajita was crunchy like chicharron. Tortillas were sooooo greasy, pupusa was flavorless.

Yelp
Reas the reviews before me. The restaurant is very clean. The staff inviting. I know it's dinner but I wanted coffee and it was delicious. Also the carne guisada was sabroso! My husband who is picky tried the menudo and also enjoyed his dinner. The corn tortillas are home made ! Will come back to try breakfast. - only thing is street parking - but maybe I missed a parking entrance. Either way I recommend this hidden gem.

Yelp
Great Menudo! I've been searching for a restaurant on this side of town that makes and serves it right.. This is the best that I have found so far.

Yelp
Great mexican restaurant. I always get the steak a la mexicana and it reminds me of grandmas. Food is also really cheap! Don't let the ambiance deter you. It's fine

Yelp
Maybe it's because nostalgia, I grew up in this neighborhood and have been eating here since I was a kid; but this place is perfect for breakfast. Best bean and egg tacos ever. Simple and classic

Yelp
Worse place service and food are horrible ! Tortillas are stale eggs are over cooked no flavor and on top of that server seems to be in a bad mood. Never again !!

Yelp
Not at all happy with the customer service today. To top it off I pointed out hair in a taco and the waitress ignored me and acted like she didn't care. The time is 8:36 pm and no customer but us (friend, husband and myself) to be having bad customer service.

Yelp
So my father grew up in this side of town, he always said they have the best tortillas in town! I still come here when I can get away from work I live in Katy and still make the drive to have a tortilla with butter! I got the Barbacoa tacos and the menudo is done like grandmas.

Yelp
The place look good, feel good but I didn't like the fajitas taco the way the meat tasted but good food tho...service was just right.
