Where to Find the Best Vegan Tacos in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"This family-run taqueria with a distinctive orange and green facade is a favorite among residents of the Alberta and Woodstock neighborhoods. Easy for vegans and vegetarians to navigate, the menu involves popular vegan alternatives, such as Tofutti sour cream. Although the wet burrito slathered in enchilada sauce is a hot menu item at El Nutri Taco, the simple-but-tasty tacos filled with chipotle tempeh, soy curls, or potatoes make a good lunch option. Diners can dress them up further with salsas, grilled cactus, and pickled jalapenos." - Waz Wu

I've been dying to have a wet burrito in ages ever since I've become a vegan. El Nutri Taco does not disappoint. The flavours, how filling it is, the way it tastes! 100/100 I will be coming more often to get some more amazing food. Everything was so tasty!

Google
Favoritist burrito in Portland! The SUpEr Burrito has the perfect ratio of vegetable to meat and beansandsuch. AND the sause brings it all together. Make me feel like a healthy but also like a big fulfilling meal in my tummy. Unequivocally scrumptious!

Jordan

Google
Burrito was delicious. The cabbage, the mushrooms, the sauce... all delicious. The tacos were the opposite. Meat seemed to be microwaved, lacked flavor, super bland. Tacos definitely require some type of sauce or guac or something. I would give the tacos a 1.

Google
Awesome flavor, great portions, good prices -- it always hits the spot! The staff is always so friendly too.

Google
Extensive vegan menu!! So delicious. Vegan chorizo tacos were bomb. I love that they have vegan sour cream- game changer

Kareem Alston-Rosales

Google
I got a carne asada torta and loved it! It was a lot of food, it came out fast, and it was tasty. Fast service and good indoor/outdoor space.

Jessica McKiernan

Google
Excellent food and service! Best tacos and burritos we’ve had in a long time.

Google
Solid little spot. You definitely get your money's worth, but it's not going to be the best youve come across. Service can be a bit spotty. Super cool people but very small kitchen so it backs up quickly. It's Alberta... good luck there is no parking.

Yelp
What a great find! Nice simple Mexican fare with great vegan protein selections, like chipotle tempeh and soy curls. Wish I lived in the area and could try the whole menu. Pretty inexpensive too!
google avatar

Yelp
The inside is very small. There's outdoor patio seating in front, adjacent to Alberta Street (no cover or umbrellas). The carne asada is very bland, no seasoning. The pick de gallo also lacked flavor (desperately needed salt and/or lime juice). Ordered 3 "tacos" from the menu thinking they would be standard size tacos, but they were actually "street tacos" (i.e. tiny, mini).

Yelp
Simple and amazing food with lots of vegan options. They were all so nice to us. The place has a cool funky vibe and good music playing.

Yelp
OMG, a taco place with tacos for under $3!!! Thought they didn't exist anymore... As someone who is constantly on the search for the best taco, price is an important factor and 2.25 for a taco is the best in about a 5-10 mile radius by my personal research (compared to about 6 other taco joints). My favorite things here is the chicken tacos and they have a tasty salsa roja that actually has some heat. I usually like pastor the most at places, and it is still good here but a little different. A little bit more dry rub kinda taste and texture than juicy/marinated like I'm used to. Still, good and the asada and carnitas are good here too. However, their meat substitutions aren't my favorite, I stick to the meat here. However, still 5 stars cause tacos for 2.25 is a rare find in portland today!

Yelp
Came here to try their vegetarian tacos. Got 2 soy curl tacos, and 1 chipotle tempeh taco, which was $2 each. Tempeh was okay, but I thoroughly enjoyed the soy curl tacos! Their tacos are pretty small with some lettuce, cilantro, and tomato on top. Very simple but the texture of the soy curl was quite meat-like. The tempeh texture was like small hard potatoes or beans, I prefer the soy curls. I give this place 4 stars over 3 because I have yet to see any soy curls available elsewhere.

Yelp
For the most part we really liked everything from El Nutri-taco. The only thing that bums me out is that I took at least five or six bites of my burrito. The first third of the burrito. And there was not much flavor! No spice. All of the spice and flavor was in the last 2/3 of the burrito. It was sort of weird. I was really bummed out to start off with and then things turned out not too bad. I just wish the flavor was spread throughout the entire burrito!

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place out as they offered Vegan cheez. I ordered nachos with beef and guac. Let's start out with the base, the corn tortilla chips were too thin and could not support the toppings. Yes, they used vegan cheez, but there was barely anything on my nachos, didn't even cover 1/3 of the order. They used ground beef vs. carne asada (steak), it was okay. The guac was good. The person who took my order was extremely helpful and friendly. The prices are very reasonable. Street parking was easy to find.

Yelp
This is a fantastic place for a bite. I tried tacos & enchiladas. Both absolutely fantastic. I had them chipotle soy curls - typically I'm not a huge fan of 'chipotle' anything, but I was pleasantly surprised! The corn tortillas on the enchiladas were EXCELLENT!! My husband a (in his words f'n big) chimichanga, said it was delicious! The service was great, really friendly ladies! Definitely a place we will be returning to. Made it in time for HH, so our beverages were a bargain!
google avatar

Yelp
The chicken tacos are to die for!! Everytime I'm in the area I have to stop by. Fast and friendly service too!
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Seems like veggie is the focus, but they also offer meat versions. I ordered a soy curls taco and a carnitas one. Not a fan of blah shredded lettuce so a negative there. Both were good and about average size for the price. Hot sauce choices were non-thrilling red and green. Service was fine. No overall highs or lows. It's the kind of place I won't go out of my to visit, but may stop by if I'm driving by and have a hankering for Mexican food.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
Awesome vegan twist to classic Mexican dishes! Prices are very reasonable for the value you get. I shared a burrito with a friend and it was more than enough for the both of us. Everything was cooked perfectly and the tofu was a great protein substitute.
google avatar

Joshua W.

Yelp
This is the last affordable lunch joint on Alberta! Three absolutely delicious tacos, a side of perfectly ripe avocado, house made hot sauces (watch out for the red one! Delicious but properly no-messing-around HOT) and they come with GRILLED onion (grilled beats raw and I'll hear no argument on the matter), fresh cilantro and ORGANIC tortillas! $12.90 INCLUDING A COKE AND TIP! Even the coke was unusually cold. I just wish I had taken a picture and gotten one more taco (they are that good).

Yelp
I stopped by for a fajita burrito, and was not terribly impressed. It needed some salsa, but I didn't think to grab any (and wasn't offered any for my to-go order). The quality was so-so. I may try stopping by again another day and see if things improve.
google avatar

Yelp
Consistently the best burritos in this city. I'm in love. Never disappoints. I need them monthly at ver least. A great place to call in and take out. Don't forget their red hot sauce. They have never disappointed me. I buy 2 different ones just to have one the next day. Great people too.

Cara S.

Yelp
This place is great. They are very fast, kind, and happy to accommodate vegan/vegetarian diets.
google avatar

Yelp
Sadly, this place has changed quite a bit since 5 years ago, when I lived here and loved this place. Their asada and pork street tacos had zero flavor, and their carnitas was the only street taco that had any sort of flavor attached to it. If your bread & butter if your restaurant has no flavor what's the point? Bummer...
google avatar

Corealinas M.

Yelp
The best Mexican food I have had since I moved to the area. The Verde chimichanga was crispy and doused with a fantastic verde sauce that was tangy and zippy. I would have loved to take a picture but I devoured it as soon as it was placed in front of me. The chipotle soy curls were really delicious and went perfectly in the verde chimichanga. My friend had the al pastor tacos and also went back for seconds. A great place for vegans/vegetarians/and carnivorous friends to have a fantastic meal!
google avatar

Melanie T.

Yelp
I wasn't so happy with my experience having lunch year. Even though the staff seems to work hard and pay attention to our order... the food didn't have any flavor. I wouldn't say this is authentic Mexican food because of the lack of flavor. I asked for some pico de gallo and salsa to liven it up.
google avatar

Jey B.

Yelp
I've eaten here a lot in the past because of their vegan options but won't continue that after my latest experience. After eating at home for over a month, we decided to get takeout from Nutri Taco. 2 days later I came down with what turned out to be a gastrointestinal virus that felt like food poisoning but lasted 2 weeks. I ate the salad and my partner didn't so I presume that's what caused it
google avatar

Maeghan E.

Yelp
AMAZING! The vegan substitutes here are unbeatable. I've never seen such a variety offered! So good and great service.

Yelp
This place is no joke. I've passed by it a million times while being distracted by everything else Alberta has to offer, but with a little help from fellow yelpers and a hungry belly, here is where I ended up. The menu is simple but I feel like the options are endless. I love that the chipotle aioli is vegan no matter what, because at any other restaurant us vegans would have to miss out on the gold that is aioli, but not here! Freakin potatoes. They're good on everything. Either that, or their burritos make everything taste good on it. They could roll anything up in with their ingredients and I would like it. I've been back already more times that I'd like to admit, but they're an awesome group of people who really know how to make a goooood burrito!

Megan K.

Yelp
I tried the vegan nachos and it was amazing. I am going back today to try the vegan tacos. This place is low key and perfect for grabbing lunch or dinner.

Yelp
My favorite Mexican food in all of the West Coast (the Alberta location). They've always been delicious and used to be more reasonably priced but they gotta eat too, so I go along with it. The tacos are amazing, especially the carnitas tacos, but from what I've tried, I've liked or loved all of it. The spices and the meats are all delicious, especially the carnitas. They are amazing, best in the city IMO. And even back in 2011 when Portland was still Portland and SF jr, people who were living here at the time, salt of the earth folks, populated the outside seating area all day, because they knew this was and is the spot for great tacos. My only wish: I wish they made horchata!
google avatar

Yelp
Flavorful and well textured vegan options. I tried the tacos with soycurls and with tempeh. I also tried the chimichanga made vegan with soycurls. Everything I ordered tasted very fresh and had a lot of flavor. The texture of the vegan substitutes was very nice. I think vegans and non vegans would enjoy. I recommend the red sauce. It is very spicy and has a nice flavor. I didn't care for the green sauce, but the avocado sauce ( creamier looking one) has a nice flavor. The food is also very affordable. Two tacos during happy hour were only $3, otherwise they are just $1.75. The chimichanga was just $9 and I'd say it's enough for two. It's 75 cents to make an item vegan and that means that they use vegan cheese and sour cream if that is included. Be careful if you are vegan because they also serve meat. I made that mistake at first when I ordered, but they brought me a new taco. I found the texture of the tempeh to be very unique, it's ground tempeh so it's more like a paste rather than the traditional tempeh hard texture. It works well with the taco, don't be afraid to try it. It's well seasoned as well.

Yelp
Well I was going to Pine State with a Reggie and Rainer on my mind only to find they close at 3. So I find this place which screamed of vegan and vegetarian... No Bueno! However, did see meat on the menu so did the happy hour carnitas tacos and pastor along with a Negro Modelo. Food was good. Under 8 bucks! All is right with the world!

Yelp
Last meal before heading out of Portland. Atmosphere was ok, less hip area of town but these places are usually hidden gems. Portion sizes outstanding, food choices are healthy which I like. Compared to some Mexican food I've had it wasn't quite as flavorful but I think it's because it was healthier. Less cheese and salt which I appreciate. Staff was just 3 guys, quiet and just got their jobs done. I can appreciate this place and would eat here again. Great place if you're trying to eat healthy vegan Mexican food.
google avatar

Yelp
I'd give 3.5 stars if it were an option. If you want vegan or dairy free choices, this is a 5 star place. They have tons of vegan "meat" options, plus dairy-free cheese and sour cream. While I eat that clean sometimes, today was not that day. I ordered 2 chimichangas, one for me and one for my 6 year old (it's what she wanted and there's always leftovers). They were enormous! I wish they'd mentioned that when I ordered. Instead, when the other girl brought them to us based on our number and I said "that's us", she said, incredulously, "TWO chimichangas?". Uh, rude. The chimichangas were fine. Mostly beans, which I'm not a huge fan of and the meat (we got beef) had big chunks of fat. The kind you chew on for a second and then go "Eww" and spit out. When I went to get boxes for our leftovers I stood at the counter in front of 2 employees who ignored me until the manager, who was sitting at a nearby table, asked them to help me. Bottom line - if you're vegan and want Mexican this place is a dream. Otherwise it's average.
google avatar

Courtney G.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall Mexican restaurant with several vegan options. I had the Chipotle Tempeh Burrito as well as chips and salsa. The Pico De Gallo is great - not overpowered by any one ingredient. Burrito was so good - spicy and flavorful, warming and filling. It was well priced too. I highly recommend this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Since writing my first review they have increased their prices, now charge for whole wheat tortillas, have decreased the size of their burritos and have been very rude to me. My partner and I came in and had a question, the cashier referred us to either the owner or the manager, who was standing behind them. After we asked the owner/manager the question she just plain up ignored us. We were standing five feet from her and she looked away from us. We then repeated our question. She continued to look away as the cashier awkwardly looked back and forth between us. We then decided to just leave. I'm not sure what's happened to this place. All the same people work there, so I don't think it changed owners, but it has since gotten a liquor license. Maybe they don't need to have good service anymore? The food is still pretty good. I'm mostly just sad to lose a place that has good vegan and vegetarian options. Maybe they feel like they've cornered the market on that as well. I'm just really disappointed when I get treated like shit after regularly coming to a place for 3+ years.

Yelp
I'm lucky enough to work with a vegan co-worker. Occasionally we discuss all things vegan. I recommend restaurants to her, she recommends restaurants to me. I was telling her that I haven't had a chimichanga in such a long time! She mentioned El Nutri Taco to me, and told me to go to El Nutri Taco to get my chimichanga fix. She recommended I get the Verde chimichanga with soy curls and a side of sour cream. I'll confess, it wasn't quite what I remember and missed about chimichangas...but it came pretty darn close! I forgot to get the side of sour cream. There were meat, veg and vegan options. Plenty of vegan options! So awesome! I want to come back and try some of their other menu items. Besides plenty of vegan options, I liked that you order at the counter, and they bring the food out to your table. Plenty of outdoor seating when the weather is nice. Street parking can be atrocious...I had to park quite a ways down a side street. But, after the humongous chimichanga I consumed, it was nice to take a little stroll after lunch!

Yelp
We enjoyed the Chile Relleno burrito. Stuffed Poblano, Mexican cream, rice, beans all packed in tight yet maintaining an easy bite and smooth mouthfeel. This burrito captured the traditional Chile Relleno dish into a portable expression. The flavors are not complex. They taste fairly bland. But the size and mouthfeel came together with enough gravitas to warrant 4 stars.

Yelp
Was excited to try another vegan Mexican place, since I love Los Gorditos. El Nutri however, was disappointing. The girl taking our order had zero personality and was very short with us when taking our order. The menu was pretty blah, tons of burrtios, a couple tacos, nachos and a chimi. They don't offer your normal salsa for chips and salsa; it's a pico de gallo. For those who dislike raw onions, you're SOL for salsa. The food itself lacked flavor and I added a ton of salt. I ordered nachos and they were covered with a ton of black bean juice making the chips soggy. The chips are long strip, which make eating them more difficult than normal triangles. I added soy curls and they were seasoned but a little off to match the Mexican flavor. I'd give the dish a 3.5 out of 5. I always cheer on vegan friendly places, but this one was a bust for me. I wish them luck and success.

Yelp
I'll fess up to complaining pretty regularly about the Mexican food in Portland. Turns out I don't know what I'm talking about, because I FINALLY visited El Nutri Taco, and they serve up some mighty fine street tacos at a more than reasonable price. I can promise you all, I'll be here on the regular. For $1.75 a pop, I was able to get a pretty hefty platter of tacos without putting much of a dent in my wallet. Options include chorizo, carnitas, pollo, pastor, and asada. I had some of all, and all were delicious. In true street-taco style, they're small and served simply with onion and cilantro, salsas on the side. They were all juicy and flavorful, so good that I barely took time to breathe between bites. These are damn good tacos, ya'll. So, they offer quite a bit more than tacos, but I don't have a lot of info about the rest of the menu. Even so, I'd feel fully confident sending people to El Nutri Taco for some solid Mexican fare without the typical Portland fuss.

Julie R.

Yelp
Food: Yay! Lots of vegan options including choice of potatoes, soy curls, tofu, tempeh for the "meat" and we've liked everything we've tried over the last few months. Their food seems lighter in a good way - never seems greasy and no food comas. My husband raves about their chicken. Online Ordering: Ugh. The online ordering has tripped me up every time so I've never used it successfully and the remainder of my review is on this topic. Ordering online is a huge bonus for me so I'm pretty bummed about it. Yelp: All the menu items we've wanted to order REQUIRE you to select an extra add-on item (for a charge of at least $1.00) or else you can't add it to the cart. I assume this is an error, but frustrating if you don't want anything added. Prices are higher than the other online ordering options. Fajita burrito = $9.00 El Nutri-Taco Website: Either enter your card info directly or use Cash App. I don't have Cash App and wasn't comfortable entering my card info directly into their site. It isn't a viable option for me, but I don't know if it technically works. Fajita burrito = $8.25 via Google: Everything looks good up until I tried to check out using Google Pay (which I have and use regularly). It required me to enter enter the security code, looked like it was going to work, but failed to accept the payment on all three occasions when trying it with two different cards that are active in my Google Pay account. Fajita burrito = $8.25

Yelp
Let me start off by saying that I really enjoy the food here. Been going there for years and have never had a bad experience or a wrong order. Until today. The front door was open, and as I'm walking in to pick up my to go order, the girl working the register is wiping her mouth with a napkin using both hands. She then proceeds to hand me my food and take my payment. After our transaction is over, she THEN washes her hands. I didn't want to be mean or cause a scene, but I will not eat my food now and I'm bummed. Especially in times as they are right now, I expect anyone working in a restaurant to use proper hygiene and know how to properly handle food for customers. I ask that they please address this. Not sure if I will go back.

Yelp
Holy cheap tacos! I've passed this place by for one of the many other delicious options on Alberta for far too long. Today we finally indulged in $1.75 tacos which made for a quick delicious lunch. I had the cactus tacos, wife had the carnitas and beef. Once I added cilantro and salsa they were much better. Guacamole & lime would have been perfection! Very interested to go back and try out their tofu & tempeh options.

Yelp
Checked this spot out earlier in the month and came back 2 weeks later to show some friends! Finding a good Mexican spot in Portland has definitely been a challenge ever since I've moved up from Southern California where Mexican food is practically everywhere! My favorite is the steak burrito. My friend order a piña colada and it was delicious!
google avatar

Johnny L.

Yelp
Our first time eating here was Saturday. B for effort. Food was good. I would have given them five stars if they got rid of Soy products, did not cook with oil, and had more products that were WFPB (whole food plant based) not as healthy as we like but it's hard to find healthy food in Portland. Vegan and Vegetarian all day long but that's not a healthy diet not as healthy as it could be.
google avatar

Caitlin W.

Yelp
It was a beautiful warm day in Portland, I was hungry and wanted a place you could sit outdoors. I was walking down Alberta and found this little gem. Lots of seats inside and lots of picnic tables outside. They have a huge menu. Something for the vegans and something for the meat eaters, they aim to please all. Three words: Simple. Cheap. Tasty!!! I ordered one potato taco, one carne asada taco, and one chicken taco. $1.50 for potato taco and $1.75 for the meat tacos. Small hand tacos with fresh cilantro, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. They give you a box of homemade sauces. Green ones super tasty, red one is not for the faint hearted. I think I burnt off my taste buds. Flavorful meats and overall delicious tacos. I could have eaten ten more. Also the people who work here are super friendly.
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
Delicious vegan spot. Service spotty. The SUPER burrito is the best. Don't try the fries. They will disappoint.
google avatar

Fiona L.

Yelp
Good Mexican food. You could find tacos and burritos for a reasonable price, which is becoming harder and harder in Portland. They have a little area in front of the restaurant to seat outside. Simple food, nice people. A good place to stop by and enjoy a burrito!
google avatar

Diamond P.

Yelp
I haven't had a chimichanga since I've changed my lifestyle to a vegan lifestyle so I was super excited to see that on the menu! We got it made vegan with soy curls as the meat substitution it was so goood! Customer service is an A+ the hostess that took our order was super friendly and had great suggestions!
google avatar

Yelp
Do the cooks even try their food? They can't. No way. I had a Grande Burrito with pastor and it was the blandest burrito I've had in a long time. El Nutri Taco? More like El Booboo Taco.

Sara G.

Yelp
We got married on February 29, 2020. Decided to have a casual burrito party for 60 or so people. We have been going to El Nutri for years and asked them to cater for us. They were AMAZING. We can't thank you all enough. The order was perfect and all our guests loved them. They perfectly accommodated dietary requests and everyone was happy. We are super grateful we had our wedding before this giant disaster happened. So we continue to go as often as possible to support this place. Honestly, ignore all negativity here. The staff are very clean and hand sanitizer is available. Not a better burrito in town! And of course, the service is excellent and we love all the staff.
google avatar

Dan R.

Yelp
As a long time vegetarian who has tried his fair share of veg-friendly Mexican, this place is incredible and consistent. Their staff is always very friendly too. They have a great happy hour (3-6) as well with a solid craft beer and tequila selection. Did I mention a patio?! Lots of seating
google avatar

phil c.

Yelp
Good selection of vegan options, and beer too. :-) limited outdoor seating because of the virus, and they look like they're running a limited menu for now but have pretty much anything you need
google avatar

Andrea P.

Yelp
Well, was hankerin' for a burrito and wanted to steer away from the usual so headed to El Nutri. What a s**t show, seriously. Ordered two burritos to go. I was the only person in there. Almost $17. About 5 min after I take a seat to wait for my food, a woman walks in and orders. A few minutes later she is given a bag with 2 burritos. She opens it up and dives in. I'm still waiting. "Ok". I think, "maybe hers were super simple" Then, another few minutes "what did you order?" Tacos on a plate are delivered to her. The staff start talking to each other in Spanish. They gave my food to her. No acknowledgement, no explanation. We will ignored you until we remake your order. Granted, the customer sucked for not saying "oops, this is not mine. " but, really, just an acknowledgment to me that they screwed up and maybe a "sorry for the wait" AND, in the meantime, the lady who took my order sat down in the dining room and was on her phone. Customers lining up 5 deep. Sheesh. Maybe a thought to customer service. The burritos were ok.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
I emailed El Nutri and inquired if they used any organic ingredients and got the following response: "Thank you for having the time to write to us. And yes we do use organic ingredients. We use the spicy chipotle soyrizo and the tofu. And very soon we will be using tempeh" It's great to see they are taking steps towards healthier, organic ingredients however I didn't know there was organic soyrizo out there unless they are making it themselves! Maybe if more people keep requesting organic ingredients... they will add more! Can't wait for the tempeh too! Yum!

Yelp
During one of my walks on Northeast Alberta Street Pre Pandemic (it was before I started going to Alberta Street with my Darling Husband in 2016), I walked in to El Nutri-Taco and ordered a Torta. There are picnic benches outside in the courtyard and I ate my lunch while I sat out there. I also ordered a bottle of soda. While I was waiting for my Torta to be made I was standing inside. One of the counter staff asked me if I needed anything else... maybe because I was standing. Maybe that guy thought that I was a Tourist. There is a bar next door so maybe that guy thought I had been drinking or something. I was given my bottle of soda first... and I thought that I needed to go back inside to find a bottle opener... so I did. I'm sure I would get better service if I went to El Nutri-Taco with my Husband... but he wasn't with me on that afternoon. The Torta was very tasty. There were only two other people who entered El Nutri-Taco when I was there, though. They picked up their To Go order bag and suggested that I get drinks down the street like they were going to. Not gonna happen! Maybe you'll get your order of To Go food here... maybe you won't. The choice is yours...
