26 Essential Stops on Your Michigan Road Trip | Eater

"This window-service restaurant has two year-round locations in Lansing, a food truck stationed on Michigan Avenue, and a counter inside Tony’s Party Store on Cedar Street, and is a bit of a cult classic among Lansingites. This is as unfussy as it gets — with no tables, it’s an eat-over-your-lap-in-the-car type of arrangement. But the food is so good (and reasonably priced, with nothing over $8), you won’t mind. Order from a variety of authentic Mexican favorites, such as sopes, tamales, beef tongue, and tripe, plus burritos and homemade tortilla chips. Loyal Oasis fans also rave about the salsas — the green tomatillo salsa and spicier varieties are favorites." - Vox Creative

I used to get tacos here all the time and they were good. I haven't been in a few years. Today's meal was like a kids meal with mini street tacos. It was supposed to be Bria. The meat is just dried up shredded roast with absolutely no seasoning, they put so much cheese on it that taste like mozzarella. I can't even taste the taco. And they weren't any bigger than my pinky. Then it comes with two tablespoons of rice and two tablespoons of beans. It look like a kids meal. For $13.99 I will find somewhere else that serves full size tacos. That knows how to actually cook the meat.

Google
Always great food and staff. Nice little patio if you want to eat there! Great portions and flavors!

Google
The birria tacos are off the charts. The consomme was perfect and the beef was tender. Would totally recommend anyone looking for good tacos, especially biria to stop by here.

This place is our must stop lunch whenever we are passing through on the way to or from Northern Michigan. This is one of the best taco trucks that I have found. The outdoor seating is perfect. The location is great as it is just off the highway. Drive past the abundance of chain fast food, and go find The Oasis for a unique dining experience.

Google
We ordered pollo tacos and pastor tacos with additional sauce, both are delicious. So we tried pollo quesadillas, which were very good. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Mexican food. Much better than a dining restaurant in Okemos and Lansing. I will for sure visit again to try tamales ( when I visited they are not available).

Google
My favorite Mexican spot, the food is always done quick, tasty, and for a great price. I love it here! Highly recommend. Support your local food trucks!

Google
Everything about this place is great, number one being the food! The food is always on point! Their authentic style tacos are my absolute favorite, you can never go wrong with whichever meat choice you prefer! Their service is excellent! The staff are always happy to help and give good recommendations! The atmosphere is almost perfect! I gave it 4 stars only because the music choices were inauthentic to the experience in my opinion. Overall, this is thee best taco spot in Lansing! 10/10!

Google
I've gotten El Oasis 20+ times, and it's consistently excellent. Whenever I want fast Mexican food, I go there instead of Taco Bell, and it's always so much better and a better value. El Oasis especially needs our support now with the construction on Michigan. You can get there by taking a right on Francis off Saginaw. Today, I got the asada big burrito. It hit the spot. Plenty of fresh ingredients evenly disbursed. I also love their breakfast burrito, tortas, and sopas. The food is always ready in 10 to 15 minutes. Get some!

Yelp
Coming from California, our taco/Mexican food standards are pretty darn high so 3/5 stars is not bad. We are staying right down the street for the next month and would go back in a heart beat. We wanted to try a little bit of our go-to meat selections so we shared a Big Barbacoa Burrito and three different tacos (asada, pastor and carnitas.) The barbacoa and carnitas were both deliciously seasoned and tender. The burritos are served up a bit different than we are used to, with lettuce cheese and sour cream. It reminded me of a better executed combo burrito from Taco Bell. Paired with both their mild tomatillo salsa and spicy salsa, it was great. The pastor wasn't like any other pastor we have had, but it was enjoyable. I wouldn't order it again but like I said, it was decent. The same goes for the asada. All in all, a pretty little solid taco truck in Lansing. Next time, breakfast burritos and sopes will be where it's at. Also worth mentioning, our little truly enjoyed their side of rice. *chefs kiss*

Yelp
I didn't have a chance to get pictures because we were grabbing a quick bite to eat while moving my daughter into her dorm at State. There were a ton of recommendations to come check this out, but we had no idea it was a food truck. The word of mouth did not lie. Food was fantastic. Place was hopping at lunch and the staff is no joke. They are moving people quickly and food is fresh! It's very authentic, and was giving me vibes from when I went to Mexico. A ton of protein choices! We had a wide variety of tacos and all were delicious, with those fresh authentic shells. There are places to sit and they have made a little oasis of the area. I'd highly recommend going, and next time I'll get some pics before I eat!

Yelp
Food was great, I got the taco dinner, the setting was nice they have a table swing to eat at. the people were nice,

Yelp
Very stingy on meat. They overfill their burritos with rice and a very small amount of meat. Rip off. Not coming back.

Duane J.

Yelp
Love this truck. Everything I have tried is great. Only problem is other people know this and the line can be long. Worth it.

Yelp
I hate when I order tamales and you guys don't specify which kind you have, or don't ask for clarification. I don't like the banana leaf, I only ever want the corn husk. on doordash you have only photos of the corn husk version, and yet I didn't get the corn husk ones.

Yelp
So good! Have not been in Lansing area for awhile. We got tacos, burriots and enchiladas. We all went "This has gotten even better than we remember." Inexpensive, friendly, delicious. Six stars!
google avatar

Alyssa V.

Yelp
I came here for just tamales but left with more. It was actually really good; definitely found my new favorite Mexican food spot. It really reminded me of home cooking. Their horchata is absolutely amazing. Enchiladas were great as well.

Yelp
El Oasis is a national treasure. Bomb food when I was a student years ago. Bomb food when I visited recently. Service is great. Outdoor seating area is great.

Yelp
THIS PLACW IS THE REAL DEAL! So fresh and delicious. And very affordable. Food truck with several outdoor picnic tables for dining on site. Friendly service. Wide range of menu options from tamales to tostadas to burritos and many sides. I got the taco dinner special for $9.99, 3 shredded beef tacos (your choice of meat) with a side of rice and beans. The tacos were perfectly balanced with meat and accoutrements. Each taco in two soft corn tortillas. Rice and beans light and fresh - tasted great. I would return without a doubt and try other options they have to offer, not because I didn't love the tacos, but because after my first experience - I'd have to guess that everything on their menu is delicious!
google avatar

Courtney J.

Yelp
Finally a real mexican taco truck in Michigan! I will drive the 50 minutes for this burrito indefinitely.

Yelp
Great value! Favorite place(s) to get authentic Mexican in Lansing. Highly recommend!

Ramon G.

Yelp
Food is disappointing. it is not authentic Mexican food. More Taco Bell than authentic Mexican. The salsas are disappointing. If a "Mexican" food place has a "Mild" sauce, RUN! Service was good, food was not!

Forrest B.

Yelp
Too many customers makes the burrito bland, thin, devoid of taste, it might br time for them to reassess content, amount, and quality , old pal you have changed

Yelp
Highlights of this trip: - excellent beans and rice - cheap price for taco's Came to El Oasis because my nephew wanted to get some Mexican food. We pulled up, parked, waited in line and went with the following items. - Dinner Special (3 tacos with Carintas, rice and beans) - Tostadas with Pastor - Chips and Salsa - Pork Tamales - Torta I was told taco's were small, so I ended up ordering more then usual. Here's what I thought based upon my first experience. - Chips were good, salsa needed some more seasoning; could have used more Lemon and salt. - Pork Tamales - good, lot better then other joints, recommend. - Torta - my nephew had it, he said it was good. I'll have to try it next time. - Tostadas - it was decent, was disappointed because the el pastor(pork) was dried out so the overall dish was just decent. - Dinner Special - 3 tacos, rice and beans, the rice and beans were excellent, a lot better then lot of other Mexican joints that I've tried. Two prices - lower price for the regular meats, upcharge for special meats. I got all my 3 tacos with carnita. While the meat was perfectly cooked, and moist, it lacked seasoning and was on the bland side of the taste aisle. Highlight of this visit had to be the beans and rice, they were excellent, a lot better then a lot of other Mexican joints. While Carnita was good, it lacked flavors and el pastor was dried out. I'm hoping this was just one off day and I'll have a different experience on my next visit. Expect to wait. Was told it'd be 10 minutes to get our food, but honestly with just one person preparing one order at a time, it took 30 minutes to get our food and 10 minutes to consume it. Order at the window, wait, pay when you pick up the food.

Yelp
Excellent food, great prices, AND they offer vegetarian options (not important for me, per se, but really nice when I am craving tacos when I am hanging out with my vegetarian friends.) They offer three different salsas. The spicy green is my favorite. The crew at this restaurant have been always been awesome, but especially during the pandemic. They make getting safe, affordable, delicious take-out possible during a PANDEMIC so be sure to tip them well - it's the Yelpy thing to do!
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
The food is decent enough, but the best part is the cute little seating area next to their food truck. They've got some flowers and water features which produce a pleasant dining experience. However, it's disappointing to see so much plastic bags, plastic silverware, and styrofoam containers get used for a few minutes and then thrown in the trash. They should really consider more sustainable practices.

Yelp
I just really love this place. Quick. Good flavor and quantity. The chips have a homemade feel to them; I just wish they would give out more per order, we usually just end up ordering 2 portions. Guac is tasty, our kids love it. The red salsa is definitely spicy, but also tasty; Recommend mixing the red and green salsas together.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE El Oasis. The food is very authentic and offers great substitutions for anyone wanting vegetarian food. The beans do not contain lard so for all my vegetarian and Halal food craving friends, this is your place. I visited this location more than 10+ times. Funny to think that during my first-time visit, I looked at the menu and got chips and salsa only. Sadly, they do not make the no-meat options very clear so it is saddening for folks like me during the first visit. I eventually got the courage to ask about vegetarian options and since then have been experimenting with different things on the menu. Apparently, if you get no-meat sopes, you can get rice on them??? Learning new things during each visit. The only downside is the price. For the price you pay, you don't get enough food. (Which is why I gave a 4-star review instead of a 5.) Given that, maybe go for lunch instead of dinner so it's lighter on your wallet. They also deliver through different delivery services, but it's VERY expensive. (Close to 6 dollars just for delivery! For my non-Michigan readers, this is a lot considering I have lived in many parts of Michigan and have seen my share of delivery costs.)

Jay L.

Yelp
We've been El Oasis customers for years, but have ordered from them for the last time. The delivery was a mess that arrived two hours early, we were promised they would return with our correct order on time, then everything descended into hours on the phone when no food arrived, the charges will still on our card, and customer service was a woman named Grace who constantly interrupted us, and would put us on hold for up to 10 minutes without telling us. There would just be nobody there all of a sudden. I know this is more the fault of Delivery.com, but since this is the only way to get have El Oasis delivered we'll eat elsewhere and spare ourselves the insults.

Jonah A.

Yelp
Without a doubt the greatest taco truck to ever do it. If I was on death row and needed a last meal this is what I'm getting, more specifically the steak tacos.
google avatar

Breh R.

Yelp
The staff was incredibly kind, and there was nothing wrong with the food we received. My friend and I ordered the veggie oasis burrito, and the other ordered a big burrito with carnitas. We were super hungry, and the size of the burrito definitely satisfied our hunger. The salsa verde was delicious. The food was a lot more expensive in total than expected, but for a small food truck business, that's alright. I also was not a huge fan of the breaded poblano. It didn't have a lot of flavor. I know I ordered the vegetarian burrito but I expected more flavor overall to come through. A little disappointed but I would come back again to try something else.
google avatar

Noah W.

Yelp
This is the best Mexican food and my personal favorite in all of Lansing. I always get the Veggie Oasis burrito and I always get the red hot sauce that has a very spicy kick, but hurts so good. The outdoor setting in a food truck in Michigan Avenue on a sunny day is an unforgettable vibe. It usually takes about 5 to 15 minutes to get food ordered, but highly worth it if you're in Lansing.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
Finally got to try El Oasis and it was great! I tried the three taco dinner with chicken, rice, and beans. I also got a steak taco and a beef tongue taco. All of the tacos were served with two tortillas and the chicken ones came with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. The steak and beef tongue tacos were topped with diced onions and cilantro. I tried both the mild salsa verde and the red hot salsa and I wish they offered something in the middle. The mild had good flavor but was too mild, and the hot was a bit too hot for me. The beans were thin but tasty, and the rice was the right consistency and not at all dry. I also liked the vegetables mixed into the rice for some extra texture and flavor. I love food trucks and this one is a staple in the community for a reason! Looking forward to trying their quesadillas and burritos in the future!

Yelp
El Oasis has some of the best Mexican food in the Lansing area and is certainly my first choice, but they need to work on their hours as its always a risk driving to them as you never know if they are going to be open or not. I have tried to call them but they never seem to answer even if they are open.

Yvette C.

Yelp
Good, simple, delicious food. Great outdoor atmosphere. Love that it's quick and easy to order.

Kelly C.

Yelp
Delicious. Affordable. Fast. Friendly. What more do I need to say? Just go get some food. You won't regret it.
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere with lots of outdoor seating under shades and surrounded by flowers and water features! It does feel like an Oasis. Food was very good - we had the tacos with asada and carnitas. Both were good, but I highly recommend the carnitas above all!
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
I LOVE El Oasis. We've received delivery many times and have never been disappointed but finally decided to get out and visit. It is certainly an "oasis" on Michigan Ave. The truck has a nice tarp to provide shade, a couple of tables to eat at or sit to wait- lots of nice flowers and a cute fountain and music. The people are very kind and very quick to serve. The breakfast burrito is my very favorite, but the tamales are amazing as well. What a lovely place to enjoy a late Sunday lunch- with a burrito and a cold coke.
google avatar

Tiana O.

Yelp
The vegetarian tostada is so good! I also love the Mexican style tacos. I'm not a huge fan of the sopes, but that's just a preference since I don't like such a thick corn base. There are three sauces/salsas, Tomatillo, spicy red and spicy green. I love them all, but the spicy green is the real stand out. Quick, friendly service and great food!
google avatar

Collin T.

Yelp
If you live in the Lansing area you know El O, and if you don't then you should. Superb mexican food for extremely reasonable prices. They're always pretty speedy with orders and they have such a nice little spot on Michigan Ave. It's one of my go to spots hands down.
google avatar

Bil M.

Yelp
Yes, we are in the middle of a pandemic, but the ability to have some truly great Mexican food is awesome. Thanks to the owners and crew of El Oasis for taking care of us all during this crisis!
google avatar

Lukas A.

Yelp
Best food truck in town. Consistently great food every visit. Their menu has authentic choices as well as American choices and their service is great too.
google avatar

Kwafo A.

Yelp
Best good truck in the capital region. Try to go there once a week. The tacos are competitive with the tacos I get in the southwest US or California. Love this place lots.
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
The best tacos/Mexican food in Lansing. Lansing has a glut of BBQ places but not that much Mexican cuisine. Of the limited choices I found the El Oasis taco truck to be the tastiest in the area. The tacos were better than I expected and they were 'classically' dressed simply with cilantro and onions. They are also were quite cheap -- about $2 per taco. I ordered 3 but I wanted more, so I would recommend getting 4-5 or getting 3 and a side dish. My favorite tacos were the Barbacoa and Carnitas. The only downside is that if it's crowded, it can take awhile. Which is less than optimal since it's outdoors in Michigan with no coverings and picnic tables. For instance, I was in line at 1:20 but didn't get my food until 2pm. Despite the wait though these were the best tacos in the Lansing area and I definitely recommend it! I'm assuming the wait was just an anomaly.

Becky K.

Yelp
The location on Michigan Avenue has been spot on every time. I trust them, which is what everyone should want from a food truck at the location in Haslett. I do not trust quite as much. Husband and daughter didn't feel well after eating there once. So we stick to the location on Michigan Avenue and it has always been great.
google avatar

Rilke L.

Yelp
El Oasis consistently serves the best breakfast burritos in the Greater-Lansing area. The traditional tacos (steak, onion, cilantro, and corn tortillas) are superb too, and pricing is fair. If you're looking for close-to-traditional Mexican food, this is one of the best in the area.

Aj T.

Yelp
One of my favorites in Lansing. The El Oasis food truck has the best Mexican street food I've had north of the border. Everything is always fresh and flavorful. And I can't ever resist the Mexican coke and Tres Leches cake! I truly love everything on the menu!
google avatar

Kaitlyn B.

Yelp
Talk a freaking walk if you don't love this place. Best Mexican ever and the fact that they operate out of a food truck...magic. shut your dumb mouth if you have anything bad to say.
google avatar

Ann P.

Yelp
Delicious!! Will be back often. I got 3 tacos and was very satisfied. The chicken was great and salsa was seasoned well.
google avatar

AJ F.

Yelp
Very good food that's reliable and consistent. We get their veggie burritos, tacos, tostadas, sopes, and specials (veggie burrito w/ poblano) as take-out, and they have never disappointed! Even their rice and sauces are very flavorful! This is our go-to weekday place! Great outdoor seating for the upcoming summer days as well. Will recommend it all vegetarians and Mexican food lovers.

Paul B.

Yelp
When I worked in Lansing 2008-2013 I lunched at El Oasis fairly often. It wasn't long before I got hooked on the Torta with pastor with a dangerous looking hot sauce (which I liked), and a great bun. I went back a couple of Saturdays ago. Both the meat and the sauce have changed.... they're even better...(the sauce doesn't look toxic anymore). I might have to make the 35 mile trip a little more often.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
I've had the best beef tacos from here. Very authentic and very affordable. 3 is a snack 4 is a meal.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
We order El Oasis for lunch every Saturday. The food is fresh, hot and so yummy!! The most authentic Mexican food in the city, at crazy good prices!!
google avatar

PE B.

Yelp
Really great authentic Mexican Food truck! Always busy so rec calling ahead. You will have to wait in your car or stand in the cold otherwise. In warm months there are nice tables and small garden. They have a lot on the menu, so do try some of the things likes sopes and tortas. Never disappointed. Have more than one location which is good for all of us Taco lovers!
google avatar

Talmadge W.

Yelp
Good tacos, but they DO NOT sell fish tacos which is contrary to their website. They also suffer from mixing orders. They refuse to take a name for the order and we've had our order taken by others on two different occasions.

Jane T. C.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos this side of the Mississippi. There's another location on Michigan Ave. as well, but we usually go to the one inside Tony's Liquor. I'll get taco plates with rice and beans, tortilla chips, and grab some Jarritos, too. We try to pick up tacos whenever we're in town.

Carmen T.

Yelp
My husband I went to the truck they have on Michigan, about a block from Qaulity Dairy. I eneded up getting a breakfast burrito with eggs, ham and what looked like tomatoes. I ended getting real sick from it. Now it has me leary of going to food trucks.
