Best Tortas in Austin Restaurants | Eater Austin

"The Dawson truck is the perfect place to pick up a late-night snack (or in the case of the tortas, enough for several snacks. The torta diabla — with ham, chorizo, egg, and cheese — is devilishly good, and make sure to check out its loaded hot dogs as well; the salchichones (sausages) can be topped with everything from mozzarella and jalapeños to mayonnaise and ham." - Clara Wang

Google
First time visitor. Ordered the taco dinner with Barbacoa and steak fajita with corn tortillas. You get a lot of meat with the tacos. I am not a refried bean person but theirs are really good. The rice was really good as well. They have a condiment bar with several salsas and toppings. Do yourself a favor and go.

Google
This used to be a good spot, and they've really changed. They're breakfast burritos quite a bit. I used to get them regularly on my way to work. And haven't worked since covid. Now, when I go and get them, they just don't have the same amount of ingredients, they're much smaller, and uh, there just wasn't a lot of flavor anymore.

Google
Ordering was a little tricky because they only spoke Spanish, thankfully I understood most of it lol. The food was great, like really good. Pricing was great, people were nice and we will definitely come back when we're in the area again

Google
The food is absolutely amazing, I have only had a burrito and Sandwhich from there as of right now, but the flavors are so very delicious and you can really taste how much love and effort they put into making their food amazing!

Princess hernandez

Google
One of the best breakfast burritos that i've had! I got the 10" burrito with Bacon, Egg, and Cheese. I didn't know that it would come with refried beans but it took it to a different level. And they did not skimp out on the bacon!!!

Google
You need to hire mature and older employees. The cashier girl had attitude. The 2 Mexican male employees were extremely rude. The tone of their voice, their attitude and everything about them was rude. Everyone looked so annoyed. They didn’t care for customers needs. One male employee who had a drive thru headphone was sneezing in the kitchen without covering his mouth TWICE. I wanted to cancel my order after witnessing it. The food was good but needs improvement in customer service. Please train your employees. Edited: I was there yesterday 7/11/23 around 8pm

Google
Ordered a bean and cheese burrito. Got a cold cheese burrito with no beans. Why would anyone order this? Also my carne asada burrito was pretty bad. The meat was dry and tastes as if it was warmed over and over. This place used to be better…

Google
I can't believe I passed this place and never ate here. I am not a big breakfast person but I was really hungry this morning. This restaurant is clean, service with a smile and wonderful food. I ordered the taco plate that comes with 2 tacos, rice and beans. My choice of meat was fajita and I ordered an extra taco (steak). This is 1 of favorite Mexican spots!

Yelp
El Paisa is a hole in the wall, family owned business with 10 locations in DFW. It started as a taco cart in Dallas in the 90's, so it's home grown! It has a salsa bar, drive-thru, and early and late hours that make it convenient. They also serve Menudo & Pozole on the weekends. (7/10) Lunch Plate w Al Pastor It was tasty and the meat was tender & well-seasoned. Solid! (6/10) Taco Dinner w Tripa & Carnita The tripa was too crispy for my liking and almost cut my mouth. Carnitas were okay but not very memorable. Rice and beans were great. (8/10) Flan This was the biggest block of flan I have ever seen. Texture was smooth and custardy. Definitely recommend it!

Yelp
So... this is the best Mexican food I've had in a long time. My wife and I were blown away. The enchiladas were exceptional, we split the combination plate and the 3 enchiladas (beef/green) I have eaten Mexican food from Laredo to Austin , Lubbock to Tyler and everywhere in between- There is not a better enchilada. It doesn't exist. To the chef; please don't change your ingredients or prep. Definitely coming back in person next time

Yelp
I love scouring the city for the best Mexican food and I really had high hopes for this place. I ordered my favorite, tripa tacos because it's rare to find. Let me tell you they were cooked really well. Crispy on the outside and a little chewy on the inside which is perfect for me. Tortillas were ok but didn't seem homemade. Overall they were tasty. Salsa was decent. Simple taco. My meal order was the pork in green chili sauce meal. This was actually pretty good and the beans and rice were flavorful. The flour tortillas didn't seem like they came out of a bag. I washed it all down with a horchata that was good but maybe missing cinnamon. Final review is this place was good but nothing over the top. I might go back to try something else and see if the menu is consistent.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall, authentic tacos! Excellent and friendly service. We got the Al pastor, carne asada, and nachos with barbacoa. They offer choice of flour or corn tortillas. Their crema and salsas are so fresh. Multiple locations in the Dallas area.
google avatar

Hyunjoo S.

Yelp
Seems like their breakfast tacos are getting smaller every visit. I got 4 tiny pieces of potatoes and eggs that barely filled my taco. Either times are hard or they've gotten too busy care. I won't be recommending this place any longer and will be on the hunt for a new place. Sad since we've been loyal to this place since they opened.

Yelp
We stopped by here today for breakfast. Ordered Chorizo and Egg with side of rice and beans and corn tortilla, Potato and Egg with potatoes and rice on the side with flour tortilla. Both plates tasted really good, but Potato and egg plate could use some spice. Quantity is worth for the 10$
google avatar

Yelp
This is the best hole-in-the-wall taco place in all of DFW. Their tacos are simple and cooked to perfection. I usually get their chicken or pastor tacos and they are so flavorful. They have borracho beans at this location only- I have been to the ones off Harry Hines and they are similar but the Lewisville location is the best.
google avatar

Jerry W.

Yelp
El Paisa was quite good. I ordered the sour cream chicken enchiladas, and they were really good. In fact, I got two orders. More on that in a bit. They were quite tasty and a little crispy on the bottom. The rice and beans left a bit to be desired. My wife ordered the chicken flautas, and they were very tasty as well. I ate the guacamole that came with hers. The guacamole was a bit too salty, as were the beans. The biggest issue is language... the guy taking counter orders had very little English, so we got two orders of enchiladas. My wife ate one order and had the rest of flautas the next day. All in all good food, especially for a place with a drive thru window, but language can be a barrier.

Yelp
Fast service, fast tacos!!!! Great food !!! The food ia really fresh and delicious. This place is a must !

Luna G.

Yelp
The tacos were very flavorful and a VERY reasonable price. Rice and beans were amazingly delicious and the chips and salsa are so fresh! Highly recommend this chain!
google avatar

Rosa H.

Yelp
I definitely come here anytime I'm in the area. You cannot go wrong with the tacos! This place is so authentic. Today I tried the Caldo de Res and it was amazing! I also got a Topo Chico! Those are hard to come by!
google avatar

Yelp
Great local Mexican food in Carrollton. They even had Champurrado. Service was fast and restaurant was clean. The tacos were delicious and the rice and beans were authentic.

Yelp
The food here was good and I appreciated the customer service. They got my order wrong and quickly fixed it with no problem. I would recommend and will be returning.

Erick R.

Yelp
Amazing tacos all day long! I normally get there Carnitas or Barbacoa. Every time I'm in the area or drive by 35 going north to a job site I stop and eat here.
google avatar

Yelp
Decent spot for a quick taco. Love that they have a drive thru. We got a quesadilla combo, 3 tacos and 2 drinks for about $25. The meat wasn't spectacular or anything memorable but was decently spiced and fresh. Beans and rice were less impressive and wouldn't get them again. Salty beans and bland rice. Salsas were also just ok.

Melida J.

Yelp
Great food, great flavor! Took a little while to get our food as we ordered for about a dozen people. Other than that, loved the food!
google avatar

Yelp
Slow af, ordered on DoorDash an hour ago and they didn't even start the order till the driver went in and told them. An hour an a half for a few tacos. Bullshit

Yelp
My new favorite taco place! My co-workers recommended to come here for lunch one day and I'm glad I went! Plus, they have a drive-thru which I prefer going to during lunch time because going inside gets super busy. I got their beef fajita tacos (4-5 of them to be exact) I also added avocado which is pretty cheap to add there only .25cents per taco. For 3 people it only took about 15min in the drive-thru to get our food which is very fast. When I took my first bite , I was in love. The beef is flavored so well and super juicy. The onions and avocados are a perfect match with it. The amount of food that they give you for the price and quality is 100% worth it I've also tried the quesadellia's here...they give a pretty large amount for the price. And stuff it with cheese, avocado , tomato or whatever you like. Tortilla tastes fresh too and is nicely grilled. So my only warning is , if you go inside during lunch time when its busy...you will be waiting a while. Other then that its amazing mexican food. I wish they didn't close the Grapevine location.

Yelp
Consistently very good and affordable comida Mexicana. Tacos are excellent and my go-to favorite. We have tried them all and they never disappoint. The chicken, beef, and carnitas are well seasoned and cooked perfectly. The breakfast tacos are outstanding, too. Huevos con chorizo y papas are my favorite; scrambled eggs with chorizo and diced potatoes. Very tasty and not greasy at all. I love the corn tortillas. I've been eating here for over 20 years. They still deliver quality affordable food. I hope they continue.

Yelp
Trying to find somewhere to grab some food?? JUST GO HERE! Based off of the pictures in the review section we decided to give this place a try! We ordered Al Pastor quesadillas and tacos and were we impressed! PLUS you know it's going to be good eating when there is an aroma of fabuloso before you even open the door! We were greeted and the employees had great customer service! Okay... so are you going to go get some tacos or what??
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
Didn't expect sour cream, lettuce, and tomatoes in a quesadilla, but I should have paid more attention to the pictures. I tried the Barbacoa meat and it was just okay. Tender but it lacked flavor. I did order late at night so I may have to give them another chance during the day.
google avatar

Bianca C.

Yelp
The best authentic tacos in the area!!! I stop by and get breakfast tacos and or lunch tacos once a week!! My students recommended them and they do not disappoint! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Davin L.

Yelp
I love the food here. I've been coming here for years now. The flautas are top notch, but the real hit is the breakfast burritos. Not many places do chorizo ones and this place does em to perfection. Not too greasy.

Rachel S.

Yelp
Amazing food! Amazing service! Amazing environment! Will definitely come back! Really loved this place.
google avatar

Yelp
First time here, my husband had the Sopes plate with al pastor meat and I had the caldo de res. Both very delicious and well seasoned but my Caldo was warm not hot. We dined in but there was no one else in the building but the cooks.
google avatar

Yelp
Great authentic food , friendly folks I've never had a bad meal been about 10 times now have sent several friends there all hooked , and it's budget friendly
google avatar

Yelp
Quesadilla was one of the best I've had in Dallas! Tacos were good too. Al pastor and Barbacoa were my fav.

Yelp
Before moving to Carrollton, I lived in North Richland Hills near another location in Colleyville. I never really saw a lot of traffic at that location so I never gave them a try. I searched for Mexican food in Carrollton and found El Paisa Cocina Mexicana. Their reviews were great and the photos looked delicious so I decided to give them a try. I have been here six times and this won't be my last time. My first visit was not what I expected. I sat at the drive thru window at least ten minutes staring at the menu board waiting to hear a friendly voice take my order. Unfortunately for me it never happened. When I pulled around to the window to speak with someone there were two cars ahead of me. While waiting for my turn to speak with someone I looked at the tips and several yelpers mentioned the long wait in the drive thru. My fault for not reading the tips. Finally, I made it to the window and placed my order. I purchased the Beef Fajita nachos. They don't sell Jamaica juice but that's ok. When I got home I ate the nachos and loved them. The tortilla chips are thicker than normal. If I'm not mistaken they are homemade. Since my first visit I have tried the Fajita Tacos and Beef Fajita Quesadiila. The meat is seasoned perfect and they give you plenty. The raw onions, cilantro and limes are placed on the side. I think this is a great idea to let the customers control the amount they want for each taco. I don't like raw onions on my tacos so I always ask for grilled onions and melted cheese. I think it was a total of $ 0.20 per taco. The menu board has the add on items/prices. My only complaint is sometimes there is fat meat present in my tacos. I know they probably keep it for flavor but too much is not always good. I have used the drive thru each time but unlike my first visit, someone greets me within a minute so I am happy about that. The food is delicious so it's worth the wait. They are open at 7:00 for Breakfast but they also sell some of their Lunch items during Breakfast hours. To anyone trying them for the first time, be prepared to wait if you go thru the drive thru. Please don't go on your lunch hour. Check your food before you leave to make sure everything is in your bag. So far this is my favorite place in Carrollton to go when I want Mexican Food so I will be a regular customer.

Yelp
I was told about El Piasa about 5 months ago. I finally tried it today. I hate I waited so long. I am not fluent in Spanish and that is how they began to take my order at the speaker, but that's ok, I've been practicing my Spanish. It wasn't too bad. I will head there to get dinner for tonight.

Yelp
Literally the best place on the planet. I love their tacos I would come here everyday if I lived too close.

Yelp
Great discovery this afternoon of this lovely little restaurant and bar. Seated quickly, $2.99 margaritas, great bar, sparkling clean bathrooms, TV's over the bar. Lunch presentation was lovely and the food was of just the right portions. The burritos, tacos and chimichangas were great! We'll definitely be back!!
google avatar

Yelp
I had such high hopes for this place based on the menu, feel and crowd, but it was a total disappointment. Hubby and I stopped in for lunch with the hopes of some good street tacos. I ordered two-chicken & al pastor, and Hubby ordered 3-al pastor, bistec & carnitas. The order came all on one plate-so we had to get another so we could split them. Then, Hubby's order was wrong, so he had to go back. The tortillas were not even warmed, the meat was not charred/grilled but instead kind of sauteed maybe, and a bit dry. The chicken came with bell peppers and onions cooked in-yuck! I can't eat bell peppers. The veggies on the salsa bar looked sad and the green sauce was watery and not all that spicy. Nope, won't be back.
google avatar

Melissa F.

Yelp
Always good food and good coffee & ALWAYS very busy...everyone tries to beat the morning deadline of 11am when they stop sell breakfast .so if you wan to get huevos rancheros u better get in line early...
google avatar

Jake P.

Yelp
Food is good. You get plenty for what you pay for. Better than fast food, however, service is fast. Not Tex Mex. Only negative is they close early (9pm).

Yelp
Update : since my initial try I have been back twice and I am so impressed with how friendly all the people are and how good the food is !!! The pozole soup , new to me, is unbelievably delicious!

Yelp
I was having a strong craving for Mexican and was about to frequent one my regular spots, but traffic made me reconsider. I started Yelping alternative options and came across this place. The reviews seemed good, so I thought Why not! We ordered the enchilada plate with red sauce and beef, nachos with chicken and a bean and cheese burrito. We didn't expect to be blown away over what most would consider basic Mexican food. The burrito was amazing! Taking that I haven't been able to curb my burrito fix in a long time, because every other place I've gone hasn't been good. But this place 'killed it!' The enchiladas where very tasty and the sauce was a bit spicy, which I loved. The beef is shredded, seasoned and cooked to perfection. The whole combination, including the rice and beans was to die for. The nachos was something we will definitely remember and want to come back for just for the nachos snacking alone. The chips where not your "traditional" chips. They not only had a better taste, which complemented the chicken, cheese and other toppings, but they were made to hold and not go soggy fast. We were trying to figure out if we could buy a bag of the chips just to take home. We definitely will be back!! And bringing some friends. To the owner: because of the quality of the food. Don't ever become a chain restaurant. Stay the way you are! It would suck to loose such amazing and quality Mexican food! Plus, your staff is amazing! They all deserve raises for being so friendly, warm, welcoming and quick with the food! You all may have just become my favorite place!
google avatar

Jasmine T.

Yelp
My partner and I visited on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered a fajita taco, steak taco, extra cheese, and a drink. The toppings are all self serve: cilantro, pico, onions, salsas. I loved their mild sauce since I am not of fan of spicy foods. It had a great flavor and added a small kick to the taco. My partner had chicken tacos and a steak burrito. The burrito is large and filled with lots of protein. They defiantly aren't skimpy here. They have a decent sized patio which was also nice. I will be back to dine if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
The food is really good. But they are soooooo slooooow. Why does it take 15 minutes to make breakfast tacos?
google avatar

Rachel B.

Yelp
Delicious food, but the place is always a little crowded. Food and service are wonderful-everyone that works there is so nice and helpful. I believe tortilla chips are actually made fresh in-house every day, too - and you can definitely taste the difference. I had the barbacoa tacos, my husband had the nachos. Everything was delicious! Just don't try to come in during the lunch rush or if there is a big soccer game on, because you'll have to wait for a seat.
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
2nd time through the drive through in a few months and they can't seem to get our order right. Also we got an unexpected surprise of chewing on what looks like metal from a Brillo pad?

Daniel K.

Yelp
Pastor was flavorful but dry Corn tortillas were undercooked and mushy Good salsa. I heard some good things about this place but I wasn't impressed
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
This place was raved about and recommended to me and I was so excited but I honestly did not expect much and good thing I did not because I tried a taco of each meat they had and I honestly only somewhat liked the El Pastor one. First & last time coming here. Giving it 3 stars for taco sizes that are pretty big and meat portions are decent. But just not the place for me.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
Well, sheeit. Finally tried breakfast here, and it is gooood. I'm screwed. The other morning, our power at work had been out for at least 15 minutes when my boss said, "hey, let's go to the taco shop for breakfast". Around here "the taco shop" = El Paisa (I've trained them well), so was I going to let the fact that I'd had some stoopit breakfast bar a mere 3 hours ago stop me? Hell NO, I was not. Once there, I couldn't decide which breakfast tacos to get so I tried two: eggs & papas, and egg & fajita... and then, yes - I loaded up on hot carrots for my (five minute) wait. Side note: they call them breakfast burritos and offer regular and large sizes, but basically regular is a taco and large is a big ol' honkin' burrito the size of your forearm. Order accordingly. Lunch here is always enchiladas on corn for me, so I'd never had their flour tortillas. My ass is going to get SO much bigger - those things were awesome! If they don't have some abuelita back there making them herself from the lardiest lard in town, then they're buying them from someone who does. They are chewy and springy and soft and RAD. The eggs are fluffy, and nestled in with the other goodies. Papas are good, but the fajita rocked my face. Just greasy enough, and chopped into little cubes so you don't get that weird tooth tug-of-war going with your breakfast. Just so flippin' good. Also, my boss said his migas were really good. So, in summary: this place is still the bomb dot com, and you still need to eat here. Mexican morning talk show viewing at no additional charge.
google avatar

Cat N.

Yelp
If you want cheap, authentic mexican food. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO TO FOR LUNCH!!!! my co-worker told me about this place and we all went out for lunch here one day. I had the french bread like lunch plate. It came with beans and rice... everything for $6!!!! everything was good, too! be sure to get the carrot condiment stuff they offer. It is the bomb!
google avatar

Bo R.

Yelp
First of, don't let the water treatment aroma near by discourage you from giving this place a try. There food are clean and delicious. Try going during lunch and you'll see what I mean. Authentic Mexican food. Their quesadilla and tacos are pretty legit. Other food on the menu are good too. I mainly go for taco.
google avatar

Trey B.

Yelp
People that know me, know that I absolutely love good Mexican food. Unfortunately I live in an area of the country that is not known for Mexican or Tex-Mex Cuisine. While in the DFW area I Googled breakfast burritos and this gem popped up. Less than a mile from our current location, so we decided to give it a try. We went through the drive through and ordered 4 breakfast burritos with a variety of ingredients including bacon, papas and sausage. The wait was a bit longer than I've usually experienced at a drive-thru, but I'm telling you, I would have waited twice as long for the delicious burrito that young lady handed to me. Hot, full of flavor, perfect tortilla and just enough spice to remind that I was in Texas! It will definitely be a one of our must-haves when we're in the area.
google avatar

Darlene K.

Yelp
My son recommended this place while I was in Dallas. Great tacos - authentic and delicious! Their salsa bar turns up the heat. Beans are creamy and flavorful and the best part? They serve Horchata! Yaaaasssss! For the flavor and serving size you can't beat it. Prices are good.
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
Review update- I've been back probably ten times now. I still love the food! But every time I order in the drive thru I've gotten the wrong food. Four times. I've ordered cheese only quesadilla with salsa. Sometimes I get beef quesadilla, queso instead of salsa ‍ idk. If you come here, order inside. Never any issues inside. Secondly, the red enchiladas were the biggest disappointment I've had in 2018. Stick to the quesadilla lol Chips and salsa alone earn this place five stars. I haven't been able to find a place that has this style chips since we moved from San Antonio. I was super sad to find out that they don't make enchiladas before 10 am (I'm not a breakfast person ‍) but it gives me a reason to come back! My husband ate the breakfast burrito and the breakfast quesadilla and he loved it. I can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Roland M.

Yelp
I love this place!!! The Flavors are always spot on. The pork taste like? pork - yup good guess! and beef taste like? beef - woah you are lucky! and the chicken taste like? chicken! You are good at this! So when you go here you can order three types of tacos and really taste three different meats, texture and even spice. The bistec is is a bit grainier and more tart than the beef fajita, which is spicier than the bistec. The beef caldo is heartier and has stronger flavors than the chicken caldo. I hate it when I go to a restaurant and my tongue cannot distinguish what I am eating. You can't go wrong if you order the tacos - but do yourself a favor and mix in a tostada - perfect amount of beans, cheese, sour cream and a heaping load of meat. Their tostada here is like an edible rectangular deep set plate. It holds in the meat juices and the fixin's very well. Eat the tostada first before you attack the rest of your order because that squarish shell will not stay sturdy long enough. Trust me, eat it first, so you won't have a delicious mess to scoop up of your lap. You can order everything a la carte' or as platters that come with beans and rice (and sometimes a salad). So you're wondering if I love this place so much why is it just a four star review? It is because of consistency! Just like the oft absent salad on the platters, the service can be iffy. This is the only place I know that walking in to order to go is almost always faster than the drive-thru - specially for breakfast! And this place always has a different total for my static choices of breakfast tacos. It all depends on who rings me up. The elder gentleman (owner?) is the worst at this. Its never a lot of money, but that dude makes up prices I think. Sometimes I get out cheaper than before and sometimes its a bit more. The sometimes neglected salsa bar is a minus. Oh if you like your Tea sweet! you will lovve the sweet tea here. If there were such a thing as tea doubles, this tea would be the twin of the tea at Coppel Deli!
