The Best Bars in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Known for its combination of small stature and exceedingly skilled bartending, this Cuban-influenced institution has garnered a lot of accolades. It all comes down to its tidy menu of classics like mojitos and pina coladas in addition to some creations that play on Caribbean notes." - JP Karwacki

15 Best Bars in Montreal | Condé Nast Traveler

"With only 150 square feet of floor space, this tiny Old Montreal bar is Canada's smallest. The bright space, formerly a gift shop, comprises two bar stools, one standing table, and a small bar squeezed between the big windows on one side and exposed brick on the other. An appropriately short menu features four items: a daiquiri, a mojito, a rum and Coke, and an El Presidente (Havana Club three-year aged rum, Plantation Original dark rum, vermouth, citrus liqueur, and grenadine). There's only one menu item, but it's superb: the team traveled to Miami to learn how to perfect the Cubano sandwich, and they succeeded." - Isa Tousignant

Google
Phenomenal service and the drinks were outstanding. The staff is very knowledgeable and can build a rum drink on the fly with input on your favorite cocktails. I had a take on a “Last Word” as well as a “F Me Up Nick” which is a limit 1 b/c it is so boozy.

Wandering around the streets of Montreal we stumbled upon this little gem. Jackson invited in and told us all about the place. We aren't (or weren't) rum drinkers. Jackson asked us what we usually drink and he fixed two amazing cocktails. He was a great host we wound up coming back the next three nights in a row. Meeting new visitors each night. A fun and cozy must stop for anyone that enjoys a good cocktail and fun conversations.

Marissa O'Shea

Google
Small space, big on personality and flavor. Jackson is the GOAT and we loved that he was ready to toss the menu to the side and help us select drinks based on a conversation about our preferences. We went to another very highly ranked “no menu” bar in town and found their drink discussion process to be very sanitized compared to Jackson sharing his personal tastes and recommendations and laughing with us—we much preferred this kind of personalized, intimate service! Plus the drinks themselves are great, so it’s a win all around!

Google
The mojitos were amazing and the Cuban sandwich was as well. Jackson was a great bartender and super friendly too. Definitely stop by here and maybe he’ll give you some recommendations on other places to go afterwards. He gave us a ton and we had such an amazing night exploring different parts of the city.

Google
One of the best bars in Montreal. The service and drinks are amazing. The bartender Jackson was phenomenal!! His energy, hospitality and his creativeness with the drinks were amazing. He made our time in Montreal really special.

Ivan Fischer

Google
The room may be small, but the vibe is colossal. Jackson puts the 'tender' in bartender through his attentive and caring service style. Ask him any question about rum and rum accessories.

El Pequeno is one of my favorite spots in the city, and a huge part of that is thanks to Jackson and Tristan. They’re absolute pros behind the bar always friendly, welcoming, and mixing some of the best cocktails I’ve ever had. Whether it’s a classic or something more inventive, they nail it every time. If you’re looking for a great drink and even better vibes this is the spot!

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick drink on a warm summer night last August. As advertised the place is tiny! That could have gone horribly wrong but the right bartender and crowd can make the place. Lucky for us, we hit it right. Decent rum-focused menu. Bartender is happy to talk you through and find something interesting that suits your palette. Didn't realize going in that this place is affiliated with The Coldroom. For us that's a plus!

Yelp
A very tiny bar, with one sitting table in the middle. I would say max 8 people can go in, and I assume in the summer more with the terrace. The service was amiable. We had two cocktails one margarita and one specialty cocktail of the season. Both were beautifully presented and both were delicious,

Yelp
Taking the title Canada's smallest bar   @elpequenobarmtl definitely delivers on its accurate name. A very intimate setting where you will most definitely make freinds as no conversation is private in the 9 seat, rhum focused bar. It has been voted (we're not sure by who) #7 @canadasbest100 and #29 @50bestbars in North America. But, honestly...we're not very sure why. We did enjoy our drink and experience meeting mostly tourists there. However, the cocktails we had were nothing spectacular. Surely not worthy of those rankings. Paired with a bartender with a less than amicable attitude (probably due to the fact that there can really only be one, very stressed, employee at a time) we felt more like we were in a waiting room for @thecoldroommtl with which it shares a stairwell. (As we're all the people we talked to)

Yelp
This is a good place to stop for a drink and a snack. I think it would actually be a great lunch stop except it doesn't open until six. The patio area is pretty roomy and they come out to your table. The indoor bar is purportedly the smallest bar in North America and I believe it had four seats. The menu drinks are largely rum based, but they can make any cocktail you ask for. Neither of us are rum drinkers but we both liked what we had. I believe the only food is Cuban sandwiches and plantain chips, both of which we tried and enjoyed. Our server was extremely nice and attentive. Note the mysterious door next to the door to the bar is a speakeasy. We would not have been aware of what it was since no one ever comes out that goes in. Both places seem to have the same owner and you can visit the speakeasy after you have your sandwich.

Yelp
I recently visited El Pequeno Bar on day 1 of a 5 day trip to Montreal. Being my first time in the city, I was adamant to try the city's absolute best bars so, of course, El Pequeno was a priority. We arrived just minutes after they opened, at 6 pm on a Wednesday. The internet does not prepare you for just how small this place is - but I guess the name does. When we walked in, we were the only two people there (plus the bartender), so it was great to have the whole place to ourselves. I started off with the Cafecito which was one of the best cocktails I've ever had. I do not say that lightly - it was truly amazing. I grew up in Miami, drinking cafecito often, and this felt like an "adult" version of my childhood. To those who grew up differently, just know this is El Pequeno's response to the incredibly popular espresso martini. No wonder this was named one of the best bars in the world! While I enjoyed my drink, we had a lovely conversation with our bartender. We told him we were visiting from NYC and he instantly took it upon himself to make us a mini "must visit" guide for Montreal. Me being me, I already had about 100 places on our itinerary, but his list certainly changed things. He could not have been more helpful nor kind - the first of many countless wonderful human interactions we had while visiting the city. After my first drink, I rounded things out with a mojito. By this time, the bar was getting a bit more full, specifically with at least one regular nearby who reassured me that this would be the greatest mojito of my life. He was pretty dang spot on, as this drink was also fantastic. It seems everything on the menu is a winner, so it sounds like you can't really go wrong (though I still primarily endorse the cafecito...just wow). After just two drinks, we were off to the next spot on my grand "see/drink/eat all of Montreal in 5 days" list. Looking back, while I did end up going to some truly outstanding bars while in Montreal, I'm pretty certain El Pequeno was the best one of all.

Yelp
Rated one of the 50 best bars in North America, and the second smallest bar in Canada, I really wanted to try this place. I was worried it would be full but I arrived at about 830pm on a Sunday night in late August and I was the only person there! It was super cool to get personal service from the bartender who made me 3 drinks (a mojito, an El Presidente, and an off-menu aqavit-based drink) and al of them were great. It was the best mojito I've ever had. I also got the cubano sandwich and it was quite big, crispy bread, tasty sauce and pickles, and very nice cheese and meat -- an all around very very good sandwich!

Yelp
A tiny bar located right next to The Coldroom & across from Bar Bisou Bisou, El Pequeño bar stands out from its sister bars. Like it's name, its very small, seats less than 10 people and little standing room. But rather than detracting, it adds to the intimacy of the bar and a close knit vibe. The cocktails are all Cuban twists on rum based classics like the daiquiri and Pina Colada. I thoroughly enjoyed the drinks!

Yelp
Enjoyed sitting at the Albert tiny but mighty bar. Our bartender was great to speak with. We talked about bout the bar itself and the Montreal cocktail scene. He slung hit after hit and the bar itself is a wonderful little gem. Definitely worth a pit stop while enjoying the area.

Yelp
Drinks are amazing and the environment can't be missed! Classic Cuban drinks in the most amazing space!

Yelp
If you like rum, you have to try this place! You can try Havana Club, a rum you can't get in the States because it's from Cuba. This is the smallest bar in Canada (hence the name); I think fewer than 10 people could cram their way inside. But there's plenty of outdoor seating, so grab your drink and then enjoy it al fresco. The cocktails are delicious, and the service in amazing (shout-out to Stefan!). They will take care of you here!

Yelp
This place was really cool! It's a small bar/lounge on the corner adjacent to an alley that takes you to that really touristy street in MTL. We were looking for some refreshments before our dinner reservation and this seemed like the perfect place. It's cuban inspired and cute. We sat outside and it is my understanding that the inside is very small. They have a few (expensive) cocktails on the menu. We both ordered the mojito which I would rate as better than average. In terms of the food sitch you can only really get a cuban sandwich which looked amazing (table next to us ordered it) but doesn't appeal to my vegetarian tendencies. The service was decent. The guy was nice and friendly but there was only one person and he was running around all over the place serving all of the tables that it took a minute for him to recognize that our glasses were empty. Overall this is a good place if you're just interested in some dranks and are not in a rush.

Yelp
This was our precursor to waiting the The Coldroom! Toted as one of the top three bars in Montreal and the smallest - this place was super ! The bartender had a large friendly personality and was very accommodating/ helpful ! Their specialty is Rum with a Havana flair. Have to admit - Rum is never my go to drink. However, amazing revolution with smoky tones and aging process that bring this libation back up on the list. A notable mention for flair and showmanship in the preparation- see photos and go!! *Tip will help you locate establishment *

Yelp
Just a great Cuban rum bar. Came twice with a group of six and just sat out on the street chairs and enjoyed the drinks. Our server was extremely accommodating and knowledgeable about their drinks list. We tasted a few different types of drinks and actually changed a few opinions about rum cocktails. Even though we had had supper, after the third round we ordered a Cuban sandwich. It was excellent. Fun and great people watching spot.

Yelp
Havana ohnana, half of my heart is in El Pequeño oh nana.. Like my jingle? Maybe not I will stick to reviewing. Within it's first two weeks of opening I was so happy to wander off and discover El Pequeño on a Friday afterwork deal. When Eater mentioned this was a small Havana styled bar that seats 9 ppl - the Polly pocket loving child in me had to check this place out. I patiently waited as they opened up at 7 pm. The best surprise was that Coldroom and Bevo are neighbours to this cute little bar. (Contain excitement). El Pequeño is actually a sister site of Coldroom! (Insert mind explosion sound effect). Walking in-the decor is a very classic, large windows, green plants and literally 2 seats at the bar. There are side and center tables for standing which is where I mozied my way through. It reminded me of an adult lemonade stand setup -added bourbon and hard liquors. Fear not! There is a 30 seater terrace being setup in two weeks -Yay!!! Peter was great at explaining the menu- a simple one. Currently they have 4 drinks: Daquiri, rum & Coke, mojito, and El presidente (12-15$ range). I went with the daquiri (4/5) it was great & strong-made with white and cane sugar, lime juice and and Bacardi Superior. Peter mentioned that they will soon introduce rum flights!! Can't wait. The fact there was only one food item only supports my analogy of a lemonade stand (not 10 cents but worth every cent of the 11$): enter Cubano sandwich. (5/5) if Schwartz were to have a sandwich baby -this would be it. I could hear the butter sizzle on the grill turning brown and spreading beautiful aromas in the small bar. The Cubano was served in an old deli styled wrapping. The sandwich is a combination of meat, mustard, thinly sliced pickles, mozzarella cheese on warmly served paninified bread. So good on an empty stomach! Good to share for 2. I am so happy to have tried this place! I kept this date short and sweet so the rich scent of brown butter can bring me back here to this exotic little find.

Yelp
Walking around Old Montreal I saw this cute little bar that I had to try. Apparently it's the smallest bar in North America, according to the bartender. There are 3 seats at the bar, and one small round stand up table. And that's it! The decor is kinda classy and laid back cool at the same time. They do offer food - but only a Cuban sandwich:) The drinks menu is limited but hits the spot - daiquiris, mojitos, rum/coke and 1-2 other drinks. I tried the mojito and it was lovely - the muddled fresh mint really stood out. The bartender is really friendly and definitely a people person. He can regale you with tales of how he started in the business. He even gave us a great tip about a secret bar close by! Definitely a great spot to grab a drink!

Yelp
The service here was excellent ! So friendly efficient and welcoming :) and the terrasse is really cute in the heart of old port. The drinks were decent and hit the spot. Great place for a quick drink before or after a meal when in the old port. My 3 stars is in regards to size of the drink versus price, the drinks were pretty small for the cost which would be okay if the quality was exceptional but while the drinks were good they didn't warrant the price for small size. We had the pina colada and the mojito. The service as honestly top notch and the decor was really cute and in a great location so I wouldn't be opposed to going back and trying a different cocktail in hopes of updating my review.

Yelp
The reviews of Miracle bar were pretty accurate. My friend and I love everything about Christmas and were super excited to check out the Miracle bar, despite the bad reviews. After a bad experience with the hostess at the miracle bar on st-paul, my friend and I stumbled upon El Pequeño Bar, which is also a miracle pop up bar this month. They have the exact same menu, but a more intimate experience with everything that the Christmas spirit has to offer. The coziness, the Christmas music, the warmth and friendliness. With tasty 'nice' and 'naughty' shots and a very gracious bartender and host!

Yelp
Nice (very) small bar! A great place to grab a drink while you're waiting to get into Coldroom. It can also be its own destination - in the summer they have seating outside so it's almost like a regular-sized bar. The Summer daquiris are perfect and the cubano (which comes in a cuban cigar box) is the perfect late-night snack/meal. Worth a stop!
google avatar

Cassie A.

Yelp
The most adorable Cuban themed bar. Having been to Cuba before, I can say that this truly transported me back to Havana. It's super tiny so be prepared to stand (I think they only have 2 chairs in total which we were lucky enough to snag). There is only 1 person working behind the bar and he was great. The daiquiris were fantastic and tasted super authentic as well.
google avatar

Yelp
In old Montreal, you can still find some little gems even with as much of a tourist trap it is, there's still things I would consider parts you should discover. This bar was friendly and very quaint considering it felt like a check in room with the flair and energy of Havana. Bartender was super friendly and gave you the energy of warmth you needed even though it was frigid outside. Not to mention, he makes a simple mean cubano sandwich. It's cleverly served in a Cuban cigar box. They also serve traditional Cuban cocktails as well. Come and make a couple new friends because it's a very intimate space. Not to mention you get to people watch as people try to hit up the speakeasy next door.

Yelp
Delightful spot with a petit bar serving beautiful drinks. The rum selection would make Trader Vic himself giddy, I was sure excited as I had noticed a dearth of good rum at other bars in Montreal. Bas the bartender was cordial and accommodating, our Caipirinha and Daiquiri were brilliant. No bottled lime here! Can't wait to get back to Montreal and visit again.

Yelp
Be on family vacation. Family patrons tourist shops, leaving me for 20 minutes. Three of the best classic cocktails I've had -- measured up to DC, NYC, and Tokyo. This rum-centric classic cocktail bar, has highly skilled artists. Some gin. A few whiskeys. But definitely creative rum cocktails.
google avatar

Dhilip R.

Yelp
Friendly ppl out here. Was waiting to get into the cold room and entered this Cuban bar. They got a good list of beers. I tried a blonde.
google avatar

Janine T.

Yelp
Cutest little bar in Montreal! The bartenders here are super knowledgeable and fun, and make divine mojitos and other deelish rum cocktails. I love how tiny and gorgeous the place is and how I always meet likeminded fun people that are there for the experience and are totally ok to stand as the drinks are oh so worth it. Yummy little Cuban sandwiches can be purchased (and devoured) and the bar is tucked away so that most tourists cannot find it, score! In the summer, there is a nice little spot where I can tie up the pup and he feels like he's in Havana as well :P
google avatar

Briana S.

Yelp
The most adorable bar you will ever walk into. It's basically the waiting area for when you're trying to get into the Cold Room, but it's worth just walking in here to take a look at the cuteness. It's super small, so don't come with a big group! Mojitos are 10/10
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot that lives up the it's name. The bartender made us a solid Cuba Libre and Mint Mohito.
google avatar

Yelp
So fun, the bar tender was super knowledgeable about rum, passionate about Cuba and gave great tips on other local scenes. This was a favorite place of ours while in Montreal

Yelp
Best place to have a great cocktail and delicious cubano sandwich. Everyone is amazing there

Yelp
fantastic drinks, a little pricey but the experience and decor is worth it!! our bartender was great and had nothing but good recommendations--we will be going back!

Yelp
Found it by mistake but bartender was very knowledgeable. Great service. I recommend this place to anyone looking for great cocktails.
