Bringing a Mexican Perspective to Sushi and Japanese Cuisine, El Pez Is Opening in Barrio Logan | Eater San Diego

"Enthusiastically embraced by the South Bay since its 2019 arrival in Imperial Beach, I’m excited that El Pez Kitchen is opening a second location in Barrio Logan as an anchor of Los Patios; the National Avenue restaurant, scheduled to open in September, will offer indoor and outdoor dining and a more refined design than the original Palm Plaza outpost. Co-owner Alex Aguayo and co-founder/chef Armando Mondragon have built the menu by incorporating Japanese and Asian elements into familiar Mexican dishes — examples include an octopus tostada with ancho chile ponzu and a tuna aguachile with togarashi and pickled cucumber. Other highlights that meld Mexican and Japanese cuisine include specialty sushi rolls like the Palm roll (imitation crab, shrimp tempura, tuna, avocado, cilantro, and salsa negra), ramen bowls enriched with carnitas and chorizo, fresh oysters dressed with Mexican and Asian flavors, scallops marinated in Maggi sauce, sushi hand rolls, and expanded sashimi and crudo options. The bar will serve beer, wine, mocktails, and sochu-based cocktails." - Candice Woo

The place is clean and neat. The speed of service was fair. The dishes definitely are amazing. The Taco de Pulpo is a must! The rolls are amazing, the teriyaki plates are incredible and the ramen definitely stands out. A must if you are a local! Ideal for first dates.

We were glad we stopped by on a Friday. The Sashimi we ordered was fresh and portions were good! The prices were reasonable (see menu) and is the kind of place that can be visited regularly if only we lived closer!! The service was attentive and food arrived quickly. It turned out our waiter was also the owner, who was very nice, friendly and hardworking.

Reasonably priced. Good sushi. Crunchy roll was my favorite. Fuego Azteca(Hot Cheeto roll) was good as well but I wouldn't recommend the 805 personally. Not the biggest fan of jalapeños but I wanted to try it anyways. Might come back to try the ramen and chicken teriyaki someday.

Soooo good!! The service was a little slow BUT I get it and it didn't effect our experience. It was our first time and we already told like 10 people about here to come try. I can not wait to com3 back for the tuna aqua chili (dayum!) Also great beers on tap. 10/10

This place was great. We came in around 6:15 and were sat quickly. The wait was staff was really prompt and friendly. Price was really good for what you receive, and overall the vibe of the place was just great. I'm local and I'm a little upset I didn't know about this spot sooner. The waitress also said they occasionally do live music on their patio, so hopefully I'll get a chance to come back and catch a show. For our order we had a taryake plate, poke bowl, sunomono (sp?) salad, and an order of gyoza. We also split a small craft of cold sake. Overall I would definitely refer this place to visiting friends and family.

This was our 3rd time here. The food has been a hit each time! This place has Sooooo much potential with a unique fusion of Japanese and Mexican dishes like carnitas ramen! The atmosphere is cute kinda sushi bar/yakitori vibe. My only disappointment is the waitresses we've had. If they were trained better or even friendlier this place would be perfect!! 5 stars! They have that local vibe , great food I mean absolutely delicious every time!! But maybe one out of the 3 times we've gone did we have good service. The waitress actually smiled and checked on us once. Just greeting customers with a smile can go a long way. We usually do all the talking and trying to be friendly. Have to get their attention if we need anything, good thing it's a small place. The food is definitely worth it though. The sushi rolls and karagge chicken is so good!! Teriyaki chicken is awesome! If the service was a bit better this place would be perfect!!!

This used to be the Rita’s Water Ice (I’m Philly born and raised and still miss it out here) but man, they replaced it with a GREAT restaurant. Service was great. Really tasty food and FRESH seafood. Overall great environment too. Modern decor with good music playing the whole time. My favorites were the cocolime albacore tostadas and the salmon carpaccio. My wife and I will definitely be back.

I am a huge fan of digital artist Richie Moon - whom I saw designed a shirt for them. So out of curiosity I googled “El Pez” and found this restaurant right down the street from my Imperial Beach neighborhood and decided to finally try it after I picked up my son from daycare. Anyways, I ordered my son the gyoza and side of rice and I ordered the tuna tostada, salmon sashimi, and the Laura Roll…… bruhhhh let me tell you. This place is soo bomb. Everything was flavorful and fresh. I can’t to come back to this place :) Please visit them! Just do it!
