The Best Mofongo in San Juan: 15 Spots to Try | Eater

"El Platanal is a family restaurant that has been going strong for 10 years. Founded by Rafael Hidalgo in the Carolina neighborhood, it’s grown to include locations across the area, including central San Juan and Loiza. The restaurant offers mofongo as an accompaniment to dishes like chillo frito (fried red snapper) and chuleta kan kan (fried pork chop), but even as a side dish it’s an excellent example — simple, stuffed with chicharron, and dotted with caramelized onions that keep the mofongo buttery. With a soft, heavenly texture inside, the mofongo avoids getting dense or dry as you work your way through it, leaving plenty of time to enjoy the flavor. There’s a decent drinks menu too, so pair your meal with a Cuba libre, mojito, beer, or wine." - Gabriela Torres

This place is just amazing! The food is immaculate, beyond what I can put into words, service was phenomenal, atmosphere was warm and comforting. This place really wowed me. We went back the next day for more food! Definitely will be coming back every time I’m in Puerto Rico!

This was my first time visiting El Platanal. They have been adding more locations over the years but for some reason I didn’t want to eat there. Today I decided to visit their location at Hato Rey and it was pleasant surprise. Their personnel was very attentive from the initial greeting up to the waiter. The food was very good. I ordered the churrasco and it was a high quality meat, very tender and juicy. Fried plantains were great as well, they were fresh and not froze like most restaurants are serving these days. Overall it was a good experience and sure I will visit them again.

Google
This is a great casual dining place with tropical/organic vibes. I went in reminiscing my late Mami's favorite dish: Stewed crabmeat- stuffed mofongo. I got a memorably yummy dish. ⁰

I'm sure my ratings would be a little different if it was just me and my husband but we went with a group 20. The server was amazing. She did phenomenal with the amount of people and separating the tickets for each family. The drinks were AMAZING. We ordered the margaritas , the cuban libré, and an "orgasmo". They all tasted so good! My family ordered the churrasco with mofongo and churrasco with tostones and French fries. The meat was sooooo good. The mofongo was a little :rubbery: but it was still good. The tostones were perfect. The atmosphere downstairs was beautiful. Although someone in our group said the bathroom was disgusting. The one upstairs was fine. The AC wasn't on upstairs so it was very hot and humid at first. But, again, they weren't prepared for a group our size so they weren't expecting for us to go up there. The food and drinks took a very long time. Again, it could be the size of our group. In all, the food , drinks, service was great. And probably would've been better if it was just the two of us.

Google
The fried chicken is a must try !!! Perfectly fried and the seasoning was beyond amazing to say the least. I didn’t enjoy the arroz con habichuelas much. Their empanadillas were really good as well. This place is a gem. 8/10

Yelp
Good and tasty food! This was a nice place to try and the food hit the spot! I got the octopus with the rice plate and it was delicious. Everything was cooked so well and had so much flavor. Service was alright. Ambiance was fun, especially for a birthday celebration. I would come back again.

Yelp
After spending the day walking and sightseeing we wanted a local spot for dinner. A local bartender recommended this place and I'm glad she did. We tried the sopa de platano (plantain), pernil and chuleta Kan Kan. Everything was delicious and it tasted like grandma made it. We really enjoyed our meal.

Yelp
Well decorated and attention grabbing location. Touristy spot just outside of San Juan, price points reflect this. Food was not great. The fish was swimming in sauce and undercooked. The avocado salad was not an actual avocado salad. It's a sliced up avocado on a leaf of lettuce. Waitstaff was not attentive and we constantly had to seek assistance from other staff to get cutlery or inquire about missing order items. We had to go up front towards the end to obtain our bill as our waiter flat out disappeared for over :45 minutes. Parking was a nightmare as well. Had to keep circling the block to be able to find a spot. Not enough parking area. Would benefit from staff training, and parking development.

Yelp
I love this restaurant. The food is always very good. The chuleta kan kan is always great here and get the mofongo with any topping and you will be happy . I love the staff too, they are always great. Our last server was Misael, was great. He knew the menu , was patient and very friendly but professional. So happy to have met him. I love the paintings on the wall as well, I like the ambiance. Just family friendly with big Puerto Rican hospitality and boricua flavors. This will always be one of my favorite places to eat in Puerto Rico and the price is always great .

Yelp

Yelp
From the country to the city that's the feeling you get from the ambiance. Food exceeded all our expectations, basically I had to try every dish we ordered and all were pretty delicious. Loved the chicken breast (milanesa), churrasco, mofongo, breadfruit tostones and the kan-kan pork chop. Taste and portions were for a hungry appetite and possibly for sharing. Portion/price ratio was very respectable. Service was attentive and seating area was spacious and clean.

Yelp
Very solid all night food in Puerto Rico! multiple locations , serving all the classics late into the night! When it gets to that certain hour this is one of the best choices you can make!

Yelp
Servicio Pésimo, Nadie paso por la mesa a atendernos, más de 20 minutos esperando. Ni la orden de bebidas

Yelp
Food was alright. Questionable ambiance. Horrific service. Constantly ignored by the staff and between the lack of professionalism and poor sense of urgency I had to ask for a drink 3 different times. Only come here when there's no options left.

Yelp

Yelp
This Platanal is open 24/7, which makes it a good alternative to Denny's after a night of boozing or a place to go when the other restaurants are closing. It helps the food is good too. It's located on a stretch of Roosevelt Ave that has several good restaurants. They have limited parking on the side of the building, on Calle Ing. Antonín Nin Martínez. Note that this street is a one-way street and can't be accessed from the main avenue. You have to loop around. A little inconvenient. You check in with the host outside on the balcony. The balcony has a few benches. There is a wheel chair ramp. The interior was clean with a family friendly vibe. There is a full bar with happy hours from 3-9pm. Ask for specials. Restroom was clean. I liked that the sink bowl was a repurposed caldero. Creative. There was a baby changing station in the restroom too. We started off with the fried cheese appetizers. They were really good. They came with a guava dipping sauce. The sweet and savory combination of the guava and cheese made for a good start. I then ordered from the daily specials menu. I went with the pernil al horno. It came with a side salad and choice of another side. I chose the arroz apastelado. The pernil was seasoned right and was nice and tender. The rice was excellent. My wife had the abacado stuffed with bacalao and arroz mamposteao. I preferred the arroz apastelado. It had a better texture. The bacalao was very good. In addition to getting it with the avocado, you can get it with the mofongo. That would also be a good choice because the mofongo was delicious. Our son's kid's churrasco had good flavor. The only miss were the amarillos. They were undercooked and not sweet.

Yelp
The food was delicious and I loved that it was 24/7. It was authentic too, I really enjoyed the mofongo.

Yelp
The queso frito was perfectly fried and the guava sauce was very tasty. I also liked the aguacate relleno de bacalao (cod stuffed avocado) with mamposteao rice. This was delicious. The rice was a bit mushy but still good. We also got a side order of mofongo and amarillos (maduros). You'd think a place called Platanos would have excellent plantain dishes. In the case of the mofongo yes. Not so much in with the amarillos. They were terrible. They were undercooked making them hard. They weren't even sweet. The main reason I give this place a three is the service. She seemed to intentionally dodge us at times, plus I saw her snacking while she was on duty. I didn't like that. Next time, I am bringing a jacket or sweater because it was very cold inside.

Yelp
Came after 10pm on a Monday evening and place was still busy, service was good and food was good as well. Definitely a good spot to try when you're in the area and if i was a local this would be my spot.

Yelp

Yelp
Great food and super authentic Puerta Rican food. I asked for a "Mofongo de Yuca" and it was delicious. I also ordered a churrasco with arroz manposteao and it was amazing. Perfect seasoning and quality of food. The price was even better! For this amount of food and the quality, your are not getting a better deal anywhere. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, specifically if you are visiting the Island and you would like a taste of Puerto Rican food.

Yelp
They sold me mero and it was swai! The fish is definitely not a thing to order here! Ambiance dirty floor unclean Ambiance very plain unplanned with probably old paintings from owner's house, Service very slow. Really a super expensive place with no regard for clients and customer care

Yelp
The service is not great and they are unorganized in getting the right order. :( they cannot communicate with each-other and the food didn't come out in the right time.

Yelp
Tremendo lugar. Definitivamente queda recomendado.

Yelp
!!! 2 INCH TONGUE-EATING PARASITE found inside my fried red snapper, the "chillo frito"! (See photos) I ate the entire fish up to the jaw and that's when I saw the tail of the thick long parasite --this parasite has claws, two eyes, and whiskers. Google: Cymothoa exigua, or the tongue-eating parasite (louse), it enters fish through the gills. The female attaches to the tongue, while the male attaches to the gill arches beneath and behind the female. The staff took my plate to the back, returned and said "we broke open the jaw and examined the fish and you are right and we are horrified and so sorry." The manager admitted to frightening discovery and offered a postre. Not a free meal, but a dessert. Of course my appetite along with my guest was gone, so then they gave me the bill and expected me to pay for the fish BECAUSE I ATE IT. I said to them "how am I expected to pay for a meal with a parasite?" The waiter sighed and said "okay" then took the fish off and billed me for our two drinks, appetizer, with their tip included in the bill. My guest and I were in shock--traumatized, so I quickly paid just to leave. The next day a family member saw the entire video on social media and called the restaurant to demand a refund. The staff said that I could come back to the restaurant and they would give me the refund, so when we let them know that their response to this traumatic situation was to now have me drive an hour our of the way to get a refund on top of their mishandling was insult to injury is when they offered to pay for my gas *****BUT ALL OUT OF POCKET SO THAT THE OWNER WOULD NOT FIND OUT ABOUT THIS. 1: A parasite in my food. 2: expected to pay. 3: the staff are trying to hide this from ownership. 4. I have not yet recieved the refund, will update this post if/when I do. "Dear Department of Health.....

Yelp
In Puerto Rico visiting and I wanted some mofongo, El Platanal didn't disappoint. It gives off treehouse vibes as you walk in with the plantains hanging. We were seated right away, started with some mojitos and empanadas. Empanadas we're just ok.Although it took forever for the food to come out, the mojitos kept us busy. The food came out hot and delicious. Portions are huge! I ordered the ropa vieja mofongo and my sister and friend ordered the chicken and shrimp mofongo. All were very good, that garlic sauce with the onions amazing. To go boxes are a must because you definitely be full.

Yelp
Went with 3 other friends at around 12am and the service was TERRIBLE. Appetizers came after the main course, the juice was nasty, we had to get our own forks and knifes to eat because our waiter came to our table 2 times in 1 hour and 20 minutes. Honestly, just go to McDonald's.

Jose G.

Yelp
Great food. Came here with family and they loved it. I recommend it if you are looking for a great place to dine a typical PR dish.
