Where to Find the Best Roast Chicken in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Charbroiled chicken is the name of the game at El Pollo Supremo, which is family-owned by a very enthusiastic crew for the past 22 years. An entire chicken is just $14.99, and there is a plethora of Cuban sides to round out the meal, like various rices, beans, salads, potatoes, and more." - Eater Staff

An old gem and staple that hasn't changed with time. Every chance I get to walk in, I get hit with nostalgia. The smell is the first thing that always takes me back. From the moment you approach the door, the charboiled chicken just fills the air. The sauce pairs perfectly with the Spanish rice and pinto beans! I love the old 4 pc combo, but the burrito is a great bargain for what you get and avoid the hassle of getting through the bones. Never change and save this place at all cost by keep on supporting! Recently, I tried the fish and chips for the first time after all these years, and yes, it's good as well! Looking forward to keep exploring the menu and all the options they have available

If you don’t know about El pollo supremo I’m not sure we can be friends. This spot has some of the best chicken in the city. Authentic homestyle food that hits every time. The chicken is moist with the charbroiled flavor. Make sure you do a combo and get those plantains on the side for dessert(thank me later).

Google
Honestly it used to taste better but the service and the food quality is why this business needs to change or doesn’t deserve your business. We ordered now several times from them and issues are: 1. Missing (entire orders like an entire chicken meal) or even small sides or items. 2. When asked about it, they said just get a refund (without asking to make it right). 3. The chicken itself used to be delicious, but lately it’s been too dry/overcooked. I’ve been a big fan for over 5 years (before pandemic) and wish them well but honestly since then it’s been slowly going downhill and hope they can change back to being amazing again. Lack of customer care and food not being as good as I used to. If the owners really cared, I’ll give direct feedback and also work with them to try to improve. I love small businesses and really support them but it’s maybe a training issue that needs their attention.

Google
The food is usually good, but today was a disappointment. We had heard that some friends had gotten burnt chicken from here but today it was us. If it would have been one piece it would not have been a big deal, but half the pieces were burnt on one side. This was not a char, it was a layer of black burnt skin and meat. We live 20mins away and were so over it since this was our only dinner plan, that we did not have it in us to make the drive back to get it swapped. Ended up eating what we could and getting rid of the rest. What a disappointment. Make sure to check your chicken before you leave the store, or risk getting burnt chicken! (Our order was a Family pack meal- 8 piece chicken, rice and beans. The rice and beans were fine, just the chicken was a mess.)

Google
Consistently yummy, juicy, savory and flavorful charbroiled whole chicken. The aroma of chicken on the grill can be smelled from blocks away. Family Pack is a true value — whole chicken coming with choice of three large sides and tortillas. Great for party catering.

Google
This place use to be a Pioneer Chicken back in the day. However the new owners have made it a Mexican chicken and fish spot and it does not disappoint. The fish tacos are tasty and crunchy. The fish and chips is a sleeper hit! It will satisfy and you will want to come back for more. The Caldo de Pollo is loaded w flavor and chicken. And don’t forget to try the fried banana and flan.

Google
Went in, ordered to go, got an order for the entire family. The most driest chicken I have ever tasted. Food smells good but super dry chicken. Terrible experience and a waste of my money. I should have ordered a few pieces to try it out before getting it for the entire family. The chicken was more dryer than salted crackers. I’m sticking to Pollo Campero from now on, I thought this place would match it but I guess it did not. This place is a hit or miss. Maybe I’ll try it again another day but from the most recent experience, probably not anytime soon.

Google
I know there are many of you here who go to Costco and head towards the back for the Costco Rotiserrie 🐔! That chicken will last meals- eat it plain and later turn it into chicken tacos, enchiladas, chicken salad, and chicken jook or porridge! El Pollo Supremo(SF) makes really mouth watering Latin inspired charbroiled chicken when you want something a little different! Fish taco as appetizer or snack. Oh, you MUST order the fried zucchini!!! Dip it in a little ranch sauce😋

Yelp
We can't wait to go back to El Pollo Supremo for some delicious chicken! Everyone was super friendly and helpful, being that it was our first time there. Man, my favorite part was the crunchy and flavorful skin. I had the chicken with rice and plantains and husband had the rice and beans for sides. We can't wait to try all the other yummy stuff they offer next time we are in San Francisco. The ambiance was family friendly, which is always a plus!

Yelp
I must say the chicken here is always a hit. My bf introduced me to this place a while ago as he grew up eating here. This time my friend and I were in the area and decided to have lunch here. Normally this place gets packed by noon. We decided to get the 8 pcs Family Pack combo because why not. When we first got it we were shocked as to how big the servings were for the side. But let me tell you, we devoured the whole thing like we haven't ate in days . So, I think we got our monies worth for sure. Chicken was moist and had their Cuban taste and great with all the sides we got. The place has plenty of space inside to eat. They have their own parking spaces outside. There's buses that stops nearby as well.

Yelp
The chicken is extremely delicious . Always courteous and the service is amazing. I strongly recommend this place for any occasion.

Yelp
Decided to bring some chicken for our Memorial Day weekend and it was delicious, the cashier said it would take 15-20 minutes (I was a walk in customer) not more than ten minutes later, I was walking out with my tray of yummy El Pollo Supremo chicken. I'll be back tomorrow for more! Thank you so much.

Yelp
It's been YEARS since we've came back here and since we were in the area, decided to come back and have it again. The nostalgia from eating this charbroiled chicken and salsa brings back so many good memories! Got the family pack deal with 8 pieces of chicken, 2 sides, tortillas and salsa. Also an order of fish and chips. The chicken is very well seasoned and grilled however, I wish there was more meat on the bones. The pieces are very small. The Spanish rice and beans are really good along with then salsa. The fish and chips were decent. Seems the recipes have stayed the same and it was worth coming back. We were too hungry to take a lot of pics. So I quickly snapped a pic of the chicken. Overall a solid 4.25 stars.

Yelp
This place hits the spot. No matter how big or how small the order is... they deliver! (i mean do a good job, but they also have delivery ). Their chicken is seasoned perfectly, along with salsa, and rice and a little beans in a nice small corn tortilla... thats all i need..simple and satifying. I've only eaten on site once, and it was not bad.. Good place in the Mission, apart from all the other taquerias and restaurants... this is one of its own (to my knowledge). They mostly do one thing, and they do it pretty good... I mean this as a compliment, but i liken it to an upgraded el pollo loco style (dont hate me lol). the other times... great, amazing, fast, consistent... I have an order for 10-20 people... i can order it that morning, and they can accomodate. Huge plus for adding door dash so we can place and advanced order. Im a dinosaur and I used to call in my order when they open at 11.. One order, they did forget my tortillas.. but that was probably the only time i was disappointed. The biggest issue i have here is the parking situation.. Its a busy street..and a popular restaurant. My tip here is that you should expect to park further down and walk here.. If not... feel free to gamble and park on site if you're lucky.. Today though, I brought somoene with me so I could double park, and he could run in for the food. the lot was EMPTY.. Overall, i'd say its a solid 4.5 in my books.. and its worth the 5 round up.. Keep it up!!

Yelp
This is a go to spot. Love the tasty juicy chicken, the maduros and Yuka. The customer service is 10/10 staff is always friendly and nice. The owner is kind and personable. Clean ambiance.

Yelp
Listen. Stop by...pass through... pick up, whatever time you have, make it to this spot! You cannot go wrong. Like chicken? Don't like chicken? No worries! They have enough delicious side dishes to fill you up. If you have ever dabbled in Cuban cuisine, then you will recognize those flavors here! Maybe I'm biased because my family is Cuban but let me tell you, I am a bigger critic for it! They have to measure up to the authenticity I grew up eating every day (still do). Not only do you get a party in your mouth, you get the welcoming service and upbeat ambiance that the Latino culture is known for! Will visit every time I'm in the area!

Yelp
Best chicken in the bay!! Been around for years and part of the community! Friendly staff makes people feel like they're at home. I love the mix of Mexican and Cuban menu items!

Yelp
Old neighborhood go to. Grilling smell in the air. Follow the smell. Lots of people are waiting for their orders. They honored the yelp check-in with free mousse slice. I'll take it. That chicken was well seasoned with garlic! Well, I smelled it. I got 4 pieces: thigh, drumstick, breast, and a wing. It was delicious, or is it because I was hungry. Hungry! I was given salsa and 4 pieces of tortillas. It reminds me of chicken i had in Peru. Grilled chicken. So many chicken on that grill. The cashier was so nice to warn me that it would take 20 minutes.

Yelp
I use to frequent this place more back in the days. I had a chance to try it again and it was almost exactly the same. The chicken had some Latin flavor and the beans and rice enhanced the taste. The tortillas were on point. This is a great alternative to having fried chicken.

Isa A.

Yelp
The best chicken I've ever had! The salsa soo good! Everything is always fresh! My son loves the chicken buritos.
google avatar

Yelp
There is no parking space and the owner parked over there and long time without disregard of their clients. When asked her how long are you going to be there she was rude and loud.

Yelp
For decades, El Pollo Supremo has been more than just a restaurant for my family--it's where we come together for meals filled with laughter, good conversation, and truly unforgettable flavors. Their perfectly charred chicken, rich in flavor, brings us back time and time again. The ambiance is alive with friendly banter, good old-fashioned Hispanic gossip about the latest Latin American trends, and the welcoming feel that only a family-run spot can give. Everyone is so friendly, and their service is always phenomenal. Whether you're coming in with your family or grabbing something quick, you're treated like part of the community. This is the heart of the Mission, where food, family, and laughter collide.

Yelp
The food is excellent. Prepared right there. Delicious. The front counter people are slightly off; they allowed this young woman (bag lady or homeless) to bring in her two Pomeranians with no collars nor leashes; and while eating inside, the two dogs began fornicating right there inside the restaurant while patrons were eating. Then the dogs ran around begging the counter for food. The manager smiled, did nothing. No cajones. I ate my chicken, tossed my bones, and left. How do you rate an experience like this.?

Yelp
This restaurant has been around since before my time and still rocking the best charbroiled chicken. Took my nephew for ride through some of my favorite eateries as a child. Ordered 2 - Combo's #6_4 Pc Chicken, Fries and soda, Large Fried Banana, Fried Yucca and extra tortillas. **If you want to go the extra mile. Drive down to La Tapatia Mexicatessen in SSF - Grab some of their carnitas, sour cream, hot salsa, chips and have a feast!

Marilton D.

Yelp
Worst experience ever. I made a mistake and accidentally ordered two burritos instead of one. Immediately I called grubhud to ask for the cancelation and they deny. Immediately again, I called the Pollo supremo and also denied to cancel or change the order. I did all of this within seconds. No more prder on this place . And no more order on Pollo supermo. No trust !

Yelp
Drove from SAN DIEGO all the way to SAN FRANCISCO to try the El Pollo Supremo and when I say I had the best Flautas of my life there oh my goodness. That is an understatement!! From the wonderful customer service from the cashiers to the owner herself being there and being such a lovely amazing woman, when I tell you I instantly wished they had more locations. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly I will definitely be returning and will always recommend this restaurant to my friends and family. You won't find any other restaurant doing it like them the character they have is just wow! The perfect family friendly restaurant to visit when traveling or just stopping by they will definitely get you right!

Yelp
Food is delicious! But pay cash only! I watched the checker take my credit card and scan it below the counter and stole my info. Credit Card company confirmed it.
google avatar

Claudine R.

Yelp
I liked the chicken for the most part. It was a little more charred than I like and I thought the chicken legs didn't have a lot of meat on the bone. The salsa was good but it's supposed to be included with an entree but we had to ask for it because it wasn't included. The side of salsa was small for an order of 3 piece. I liked the potato salad, plantians and rice. I would come back and try more on the menu. It can get pretty crowded so I wouldn't recommend to stay and eat if you have more than a few people.

Yelp
Got their 12 pc Super Special, so good! Easily fed the 3 of us, plus 1 more person if we had them. We had left over chicken which we turned into delicious chicken salad. The chicken itself was very nicely roasted with savory seasonings and was not dry on the cob. We choose the sides of corn, black beans & rice and french fries. Friendly counter service to boot. Finally, this whole meal was a great value!

Yelp
Came here for the first time. Been living here and going to bofa and Popeyes for over 15 years but never been here!! Came in with a friend today, she helped me order. The lady at the counter was really nice. Got our order right and quick! $34 per person. 2 fried tilapias, comes with salad and rice. I also ordered a side of fried shrimps (5 on the screwer). Sides we had- fried plantains- sweet, soft and a bit gooey. Fried yucca- soft, crispy, light on flavor. I had a red juice drink, which I was told to just call it JAMAICA!! My friend had a white drink, maybe it was Sprite ... They also give sour cream, mild spicy salsa sauce, Tartar sauce and salad dressing in small sauce containers and packages. When your food is ready, they call your number on the receipt. It's a pretty long number. The seating is extremely spacious. Glass windows so it's bright, now the sun sets earlier, they turn their lights on around 6:30pm. Don't expect the seats and table to be squeaky clean but they're all in great condition and wiped off. When we arrived (4:30om), there was plenty of seating, after 15-20 mins, people started to file in. There's no AC, no fan, so it did get hot in there. I wonder if it's cold during winter time. Will find out soon! They have 2 garbage cans, one for garbage and one for recycling. But it gets filled up really quick. Not sure how often they change it and take it out, but maybe add another one or bigger one..??? They have a small parking lot, fits about 7 cars (if you count the 'no parking zone) (which cars do park there as well). I parked down the street on Alemany (residential parking, just read the signs for street cleaning days), there's plenty of street parking on mission (with meter). However, parking is hard to find and the upper residential street on Mission st side is narrow and limited. Overall experience, was nice to sit down, enjoy the meal and have lots of conversation. I really enjoyed my time here today with my friend and the food was DELICIOUS!

Odilia B.

Yelp
I'm disappointed ! This is the second time they don't give me the full order. I was missing the beans and rice and the plantains were fried in rancid oil. On top of it all it's very expensive.
google avatar

Yelp
Quick freshly grilled chicken with delicious sides and very reasonably priced. Try it!!
google avatar

Yelp
Love coming here, one of my favourite spots in the city. I recommend asking for a juicy chicken which will get you the most freshest chicken fresh off the grill.
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
Best chicken ever!! I have been eating here since I was a kid growing up in the excelsior. I live in Oakland now but when I go back to the city I always pick up some chicken, gallo pinto, platano maduro, tostones and yucca frita to take back to the East bay. I have introduced this place to friends and family and everyone who tries this food loves it. I order for parties and get togethers as well. It's my favorite chicken for sure!
google avatar

Ana G.

Yelp
While it's pricey and you have to wait, I love their food. The plátanos and congri are my favorite. But the chicken is great too. Try the fried Yucca.
google avatar

Yelp
El Pollo Supremo could be hit or miss. This meal was a hit. Sometimes they overcook the chicken making it dry with overly burnt skin like the last few times I had it. This time I had their "fish & chix" $13.29. It was two pieces of chicken and a piece of fish. The chicken tasted great. Moist on the inside and flavorful skin. I'm not quite sure what made it "Cuban" but as I've never been to Cuba. It did taste like the chicken I had in the Dominican Republic. As for the fish piece, it was tilapia breaded in-house. It is not your British fish & chips breading but a more thin batter. It came with tarter sauce and malt vinegar! Instead of fries, I opted for onion rings without an additional charge. El Pollo Supremo is a good choice for large groups because of the variety of items on their menu. Counter service was excellent. Thank you staff at El Pollo Supremo.

Yelp
Food was great. We wanted to get a different type of food but they were closed. We decided to trek a couple streets down and found this place. Chicken is well done. So you know the white meat is going to be "Whiting" but the other cuts were great and the skin was crispy and flavorful. Service was fast and friendly. Ambiance is chill. Views to the street. The inside is dated but looks like this place has been here for a while. We tried a bit of everything. Highlight for-sure was the arroz and frijoles negros. Fried yucca was ok. I wouldn't get it again or the macaroni. I would get 2 orders of the rice & beans. Tortillas were not the best either. Salsa was fuego!! Bomb
google avatar

Yelp
I love their chicken and they are very fast. FYI it's usually packed and have to go around looking for parking if their parking lot is full

Don't suggest take home... but definitely eat thatbirh here! And smack that griller! Damn good chicken! My belly loved it! Don't let that colorless salsa fool you it was spicy! Definitely comming back and eating like a savage here! Thanks, guys!

El Pollo Supremo(SF) makes really mouth watering Latin inspired charbroiled chicken when you want something a little different! Fish taco as appetizer or snack. Yelp
I love the food but they illegally tax unsweetened drinks with the San Francisco sugar tax. Someone should investigate this illegal taxation and verify if the city of SF is truly receiving the sugar tax on the Diet Sodas... illegal tax right here ... Go to McDonald's and order a large Diet Coke or a large unsweetened tea.. there's no sugar tax at all. Order a Coke or a sweetened tea at McDonald's and you're charged the SF Sugar Tax, that's appropriate. This place charges the SF Sugar Tax on Diet Cokes. Have they been doing this illegal taxation for the last 3 years? ‍ My receipt today includes the SF Sugar tax on my medium Diet Coke.

Yelp
Good and real Latino place. The chicken was really good and if you want to practice your Spanish, always can talk with the cashiers.
google avatar

Will K.

Yelp
Cuban chicken at Chinese takeout prices! Food was pretty good, got the family meal with a couple fish tacos and a fried tilapia. Service was pretty fast for what we ordered. The ambiance is classic 80's takeout which is kind of nice without the pain inducing eye colors . All that food along with 3 sides of your choosing and tortillas came out to under $70.
google avatar

Yelp
Add this comfort spot to your list: El Pollo Supremo. This is located in the Outer Mission District of San Francisco. Impeccable flavors that makes you want to keep on eating! Their Chicken Combo meals were so bomb! - Order # 1 and # 3 - Chicken & Tortilla - Yummy sides rice, beans, macaroni salad, & fries - Horchata & Hibiscus Aqua Fresca Ooooh, they got parking right in front for you! That's a plus in the city!

Ron B.

Yelp
Best grilled chicken ever! I really like the black beans. Salsa has just the right amount of heat. Fried plantains are perfectly caramelized paired with sour cream! Yummy!

Swift H.

Yelp
Pretty disappointing. Not sure why they have decent reviews. Chicken flavor was fine but jt was dry, portions were very small and the place is dirty. I'd rather go to El Pollo Loco. Yeah it was that bad here.

Ryan K.

Yelp
I love this place, the chicken is so good and you can't beat it for the price. They're always nice and the wait is reasonable.
google avatar

Ezra B.

Yelp
I thought I had previously given this place a review. They were packed when I arrived today after placing an order via yelp. I was still helped promptly and efficiently by a hard working woman at the front desk. I really appreciated that attention to the customer she displayed, and I felt it only right to leave a thankful tip, to hopefully reward positive employee engagement with customers like me. Highly recommend, we all know this place is a San Francisco fixture, that you order via yelp!
google avatar

Ali F.

Yelp
We got the 8 piece chicken family meal to share. You get to choose 2 sides but we went with the default which was rice and beans. I saw potato salad was a choice. Additionally, we got a large horchata which was big and a dulce de leche cookie (the cookie was $5!). The chicken had a tasty smoky flavor and was great with the rice, beans and corn tortillas that came with it. The horchata was on point, however it went bad in the refrigerator after 4 days. The cookie was 2 shortbread cookies with a caramel-like cream in the center; good but not worth the price. A line began to form shortly after we ordered. It's a good place to get a a meal for yourself or your family. There's seating inside. And they have a small parking lot but it was full.
google avatar

Annie L.

Yelp
This place is LEGIT! It's on Mission, all the way on the edge of town. I wish they were more centralized in the city bc I will definitely be coming here more! Delicious charbroiled grilled chicken, rice, beans and a drink. The chicken skin is so good you wouldn't even care that it's fattening. The meat is tender and JUICY with a charbroiled grilled flavor. The only other place with good chicken like this in the city is La Parrilla Grill on Folsom which has long been closed. I long for that place and El Pollo Supremo all the time. Best chicken in the city hands down!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite place! Yuca frita with the special garlic sauce is out the this world If you are looking great food POLLO SUPREMO EL MEJOR!

Yelp
I ordered El Pollo Supremo for my kid's birthday and everyone loved it! The chicken was moist, perfectly done, well spiced and perfectly charred. I got corn, beans, rice, corn tortillas. Everything was delicious!

Nycole W.

Yelp
Omg so rude. They tried to make me buy dry fry's that i don't even eat. Don't waste your time.

Yelp
The chicken is very tasty. It's freshly grilled and has food seasoning. The family style chicken option is a pretty good deal. Their sides are really good. I would recommend the Cuban style rice. I would give this spot 5/5 but giving it 4/5 because it isn't so clean. They need to work on sanitizing.
