A friend and I were looking to catch up, and that usually translates to getting together for dinner. The evergreen question though, was where to go. I had noticed El Primo had opened a while back, and since I'm always eager to try new places in White Plains I suggested we go here. She was game, so off we went.
I'm not sure when El Primo opened exactly, but it stood out to me because it replaced another restaurant that was relatively new to the strip. There was a quick turnover, and upon entry I noticed not much of the interior decor had changed. The restaurant is gorgeous - there is a warm hue that permeates the entire space, and the decor is contemporary with accents throughout. The dining room is spacious and is brought together by a large bar that serves as a focal point.
The menu is mostly Latin American food - they have a selection of apps as well as dedication sections for tacos and mains and several desserts. We decided to share two apps, tacos, and a main. Before food though - we had a round of drinks. I noticed a selection of margaritas and decided to go with the cantaloupe and brown butter one (because autumn). The drink was fine, I didn't think it was a strong marg overall but not terrible. For apps, we went with the aguachile and chips and guac. The former was excellent - super fresh, good flavor, and it came with two big crispy tortillas to complement. Chips and guac were fine; I like my guac chunky and slightly spicy which were both absent here - the chips were good, however.
For our mains we split the Cluckin' Good Tacos and the lomo saltado. The tacos were good - the marinade they used were tasty, and I was impressed with how generous they were with the filling. The lomo saltado was tasty as well - the beef was cooked well and the sauce had a lot of flavor; both dishes were strong. I was eyeing those desserts from the time I first looked of the menu so we decided to treat ourselves. The vanilla Mezcal ice cream was pretty good, but I like the tres leches more; the latter had great flavor without being overly sweet.
Service was great - our server was super friendly and made sure we were taken care of throughout the night. Overall, I had a great time at El Primo - there's a lot of competition on the strip when it comes to restaurants - *especially* ones that serve Latin food, however I think El Primo provides quality food and great service in a stylish, comfortable atmosphere. My only suggestion would be for them to get an exterior sign (they currently do not have one?). I would definitely return to explore more of their menu.
