A Pupusa Food Crawl Through Houston’s Hillcroft Avenue - Eater Houston

"Just a short detour from Hillcroft Avenue proper, El Pupusodromo offers some of the cheesiest pupusas in the area, with all the expected ingredients and then some. Find pupusas priced around $3, which are stuffed with your choice of cheese and loroco, beans, squash, and pork, or less typical proteins, like fajita beef, chicken, shrimp, and chorizo for an additional cost. The experience only gets better with its homemade drinks, with some of the favorites being its El Salvadoran horchata and the fruit punch, a combination of fresh juices mixed with diced fruit." - Brittany Britto Garley

I recently had the pleasure of dining at El Pupusodromo, and I was thoroughly impressed. As a lover of authentic cuisine, I can confidently say that this restaurant delivers on flavor and tradition. Every dish I tried was a testament to the rich culinary heritage of El Salvador. The flavors were bold, complex, and undeniably authentic. The service was equally impressive. The staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu. Their recommendations were spot on, and they made our dining experience even more enjoyable. If you're craving a true taste of El Salvador, I highly recommend giving [Restaurant Name] a try. You won't be disappointed!

My mom wanted to eat sopita and we were in this part of town, so we were driving by when she saw “El Pupusodromo” and she said, let’s go there! So we did. The food is very good, with that home taste we all like. The are to be honest is not the best, but the food is delicious and the service is great. My mom got Caleo de Gallina and I got Caldo de Res, it was a cold day, so these papitas really hit the spot. They brought these long and thick slices of tortillas they make (Salvadorian food) with a creamy cilantro dip, we loved it. They have “Agua de frutas” which basically is a combination of fruits and it was the best I have tried. We also order some pupusas to go for dinner! That how good the food was

Google
Wanted some authentic Salvadoran food and tried this placed and I was truly impressed with the food and service. I ordered the tipico breakfast and a pupusa de aroz and it was delicious. The food was very delicious and authentic. I took a picture and the presentation was great. I can't wait to return and try other dishes.

Google
Food was good for the price, but if you've been around many of the good Salvadorian/pupusa spots in Houston this meal will be a bit disappointing, and it has a smaller portion size than usual. Ordered a frijol y queso pupusa as well and it had a different taste to it, but it wasn't bad. However, atmosphere and service is generally better than the other hole-in-the wall places.

First, I started with a coffee, that arrived with a complementary cookie, that should be a standard, after that I ordered a Huevos rancheros breakfast, that after a short time they arrived to greet me with an amazing taste, great portions for the price! Also the service here is amazing.

Every time we visit we love to eat their breakfast and it’s always amazing. My husband is from El Salvador and we are often looking for Central American restaurants. We found this gem by chance on a separate outing and we are so happy we did. The waitresses are always friendly and attentive. The food is great. We drive 30 minutes out of the way to come eat here any chance we get. Definitely recommend getting the “desayuno”. Ensalada de fruto was so fruity and tasty.

Google
The food is always fresh and delicious. The table ordered medio pollo enceballado, carne asada, and pan con pollo with a pupusa. The horchata is amazing too. The atmosphere is great and the waitress are attentive.

Yelp
I live in a Hispanic neighborhood. Actually, some of my friends are from El Salvador. I tried their national food, which is pupusa. The location is good. I live 5 minutes from here. I love the decors. I ordered 3 pupusas for $10 including tips. The pupusas were super good. Mucha Gracious.

Yelp
I'm not too sure why this place has 3/5 stars when it deserves a much better rating. A follower of mine from TikTok recommended me this place since I'm here for the weekend at Houston coming for LA. From the start I had an overall great customer experience from the manager Lucy. I tried out their pupusa mixta (queso, frijol, y chicharrón) and their mariscada which was phenomenal! I'm glad I found out about this place.

Yelp
This place gave me regular diner vibes but surprised me with the food taste. It was so good and reminded me of home. The sampler dishes were perfect for me to take my friends and try a bit of the Salvadoran food I grew up eating. The service is always great. Refreshing to say the least I have had bad experiences in other states and so far they exemplify Texan hospitality. I would highly recommend for you to try it, coming from a picky curtido and pupusa snob!

Yelp
Restaurant says it closes at 9 but it really closes at 8:30pm. They should specify that so people don't waste their time.

Yelp
I have been avoiding this place because I used to live right next to it and the exterior scared me (lol) but decided to pay it a visit on a whim. The exterior is very welcoming and the big windows allow for a lot of natural sunlight. The service was a little slow despite there not being many people inside. They do have a few vegetarian options for pupusas which was nice (original corn pupusas are $2.00 - $2.50 or so) and the beans do not contain lard. The cabbage and sauce where good! Not very spicy.

Yelp
Authentic Salvadoran food! Have been going to this restaurant for 15 yrs or so and the food is always absolutely amazing! Today I had pupusas, breakfast plate and pastelitos de carne.

Yelp
Pupusa craving satisfied! I called in my order to go, and the person was very courteous. My order was ready in the time given. Super clean inside, and the food was delicious! Cashier was a bit busy flirting with the gentleman in front of me, a bit annoying to say the least. Totally believe in excellent customer service, but I'm a good tipper too (without the flirting), however definitely returning here for the food. Over the top flirtations I can do without.

Yelp
I've been craving an original Salvadorian horchata, and most definitely this is not it. Very sugary and not much horchata flavored.

Yelp
I went for pupusas but opted for a hen sandwich instead. The owners were there and were suggesting to the waitresses that the place needed cleaning. The waitresses were mopping as the diners ate. Haven't I read somewhere not to sweep or mop when restaurant has diners? By the way, this location has been remodeled nicely and even has a bar. The restaurant was chilly and two women moved tables to be away from the draft. It was chilly and rainy outside. I asked the waitress to adjust the thermostat and she said they weren't allowed by owner. Though the bread of the hen sandwich is good, watch out for all the bones on the hen. I almost chipped a tooth. Wouldn't it be better to serve a boneless hen sandwich? The slaw on the sandwich has too much mayonnaise. The waitresses were nice by the way.

Yelp
Great Salvadorian restaurant. Aguas frescas are TRULY aguas frescas and made freshly in store. Try the tamarindo you won't regret it. Food was on point. Took advantage of a combo deal plátanos, 1 tamal and 2 pupusas for a great value. Mom got the mariscada and she was very impressed plenty of seafood. Only downfall was the wait time for our food it took way longer than expected.

Yelp
I never really write reviews but here I am waiting for my food for more than 40 min and it's honestly ridiculous for everything there is a long wait, to order , it took a while for my server to come greet me and then to get my water then 40 min waiting here for food , don't come here at all unless u want to be here for a couple hours

Yelp
The waitress bought us some complementary fried corn dough sticks with cream sauce. The dough sticks were burnt. My husband had three pupusas cheese, bean and revuelta he enjoyed them he commented that they were delicious. I wanted to try something different so I ordered the rice flour cheese and loroco pupusa. It was tough the corn masa pupusas are much softer. They had watery tomato salsa and yellow curtido I prefer the white regular one. Salvadorian food isn't spicy at all. I would probably go back and get the masa pupusas next time.

Yelp
So I came here because met mother recommended it. But the atmosphere is great and the staff is cool. One waitress came up to me and spoke because she knew I was completely lost lol. She helped me order and she was really nice. I really appreciate it. I ordered the fruit punch drink that had actual fruits && 5 Pupusas The waitress name was evett. Pretty sure I spelled that wrong sorry lol

Yelp
Have had better tamales and pupusas elsewhere, they didn't have ensalada de fruta so I got tamarindo which happened to be good. Plenty of parking, restaurant pretty neat inside. So it's a decent option for anyone craving Salvadorean food near the area.

Yelp

Yelp
Best place to get homemade pupusas and asta tienes ensalada de marañones. 10+ and a great service.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would . We came into the restaurant, sat ourselves waited patiently for a while. No one approached us at all for the whole time we sat there . They have really bad customer service and very disorganized. Another couple came in and they immediately served them and we complained and they said we should of said something. Horrible never coming here again.

Yelp
Drove 4 hours to check out this place and it was a disappointment...Being Salvadorian I have high standards for pupusas and these ones didn't make to my list...I did love the horchata. Didn't try anything else on the menu though.

Romana C.

Yelp
Where we live there are no puousas. We asked a waiter from Ihop and he recommended this place. This is a small, simple place with reasonable prices. We ordered beef pupusas, chicken tamale and yuca with horcahata. Very good flavor and taste. Even my children liked pupusas. Very good salvadorian food.
