"Salem is home to so many excellent Mexican places, it feels unfair to single out just one. Want tacos stuffed with crisp, juicy meat? Prepare to line-up for weekends-only El Ta’comelon. Are you a salsa fiend? Try Tacos El Pelon’s excellent ones. Craving birria de res like mom’s? Go eat at Rancho Miramar. At Diego and Itzel Sagastume’s El Ranchero Market, a grocery and attached cafe, you can get a little bit of everything: taco Tuesday deals, homey bowls of pozole, trendy quesabirria, and family meal deals on mesquite grilled chicken, plus tortillas and house-made chorizo for tomorrow’s breakfast." - Emily Teel

Google
First visit I fell in love with their barbacoa tacos and champurrado. Second time here I wanted to try their quesabirria and it was really good: big, cheesy and great amount of meat. The broth that comes with them didn’t disappoint. So far this place became my favorite Mexican restaurant in Salem! You can also find a mini Mexican market and bakery, everything here 👌

Google
Food looks good but tastes old and reheated I don't recommend the restaurant for eat but the store in place is good

Google
Got the burrito bowl with the best carnitas! Would recommend if you want really good cheap and authentic food

First time here. The food was fantastic and would highly recommend coming. Was interesting to find the other half of the restaurant was a bakery, deli, meat market. But our server was very attentive and friendly. Will be back to try other menu items.

Google
Love the home and street style tacos!! While dining in has proven to have good service, their take out service has room for improvement as I believe there may be new staff as we waited nearly an hour for our last order (a Pollo taco salad, and an order of 5 el pastor street tacos and 5 and home style tacos). However, due to the wait, we were given a free order of rice.

Google
Such an awesome spot to eat. The food is DELICIOUS!!!! We ordered a molcajete ranchero for around $30 and it fed 3 of us fully. Staff are very nice. Wednesday evening 5pm it was pretty empty so thats nice too lol. They could do a little better refilling drinks, especially water but overall its a great spot. They also have a market inside with a little bit of everything. Absolutely try it out. You won't be disappointed 😁

Google
They only had 1 waitress, and there was a 13 top, so we knew we were un for a wait. We waited 53 minutes for our food, and it tasted unpleasant. Don't order the quesafrita, it was gross; and my husband's burro bowl was meh.

Google
I had ZERO idea the market had become an After Hours spot. I walked in and I noticed they had remodeled the dining area and looked so much nicer! They had a DJ playing awesome music and there was plenty of seating. They brought out an After Hours menu which had a number of drinks and food specials. I ordered these fish tacos and boy were they pretty when they came out and tasted so dang good! Three big tacos for $10...it was one of the specials. My cousin ordered drinks and they were equally as pretty and tasted really good too. Great, great presentation and taste. The service was over the top. Staff was extremely friendly and kept checking on us frequently. Even the chef came out to greet us and I complimented him on the amazing tacos. I realized they are barely starting to do this After Hours thing, but if you love reggeton, merengue, salsa and other great music along with excellent food....this is the place to hang out!

Yelp
Everyone knows when you're seeking genuine flavors and authentic recipes you follow the locals. That's how I discovered the restaurant at El Ranchero. It was packed on a Sunday, but we were seating quickly, as there are so many seating options; you can sit at the bar, inside or enjoy the sunshine on the patio. Bring your appetite, because their menu is massive. There's a Brunch menu and a regular menu to choose from and a drink menu with cocktail choices, if you're in the mood. My sis & I were on the same page, ordering the Chilaquiles, but mine was roja (red sauce), and hers was verde (green sauce - hot). My niece ordered enchiladas, and my brother went for the steak huevos rancheros. Portions were large and tasted as if you were dining at your abuela's house. Heat levels were at your choosing. My brother's steak was perfectly cooked and he left little if anything on his plate. I got a take out box for what I couldn't eat. My agua fresca hit the spot and my sis in law enjoyed her Paloma. You can't leave without checking out the store. There's a pastry area, deli, piñatas, and a massive cerveza selection. Check out the vegetables and don't forget to grab a treat for the kids! If you do, you might just have to grab something from the street vendor on your way out. There is so much to see, eat, and buy! Hibiscus water anyone? This trip was a sensory explosion of the best kind. Don't sleep on this place.

Yelp
El Ranchero catered a party of about 160 people for me. They were amazing! All the guests were telling me how great the food was, & it was!! Their service was the best. And their price was unbeatable! The communication was also great. Whenever I had a change or a question their response was fast. It was very comforting. I highly recommend them and I can't wait to use them again!

Yelp
Looked quiet but I decided to give it a try. Only two tables of customers at 7:00 pm, a bit odd. Ordered the Wednesday Special, Birria which is one of my favorites and have had it numerous times across the country and in Mexico. Their Birria is amazing. Great flavor and a nice generous amount of beef and cheese. Get this! You will not be disappointed. I was extremely pleased by their home fried chips they serve with salsa. They were so good I ordered some to take home. Honestly, the flavor of these chips are second to none. My next time traveling through Salem I am definitely stopping here!

Yelp
The highly anticipated chicken I came in for was so dry I nearly choked. The picture looks nice but it all tasted like overly salted dried out breast meat. Too bad because I was really looking forward to this chicken. We came Friday about 6::30 and they were out of chicken so this was a 2nd visit. The first visit my husband ordered the Carne Asada dinner and the meat was delicious, I ordered the carnitas tacos, they were dry but the home made corn tortillas were good. They were pretty busy, took forever to get a tea refill, I think the owner noticed me looking around and sent someone to see about me. The tea was good. Beans and chicken too salty rice dry no salt so maybe mix them together Honestly can't tell you how disappointed I was.

Miguel F.

Yelp
It was horrible. The moment I got here it felt like I was in el rancho pure bad vibes. When I ordered they took almost 50 minutes to give us our food. Last for not least, the food was horrible. The food was expired, I smelled the chicken, pork, and steak. They all smelled like expired/sh*t. And when I went to the bathroom to wash my hands I walked into a mess, walked right out. Never come here im warning you.

Yelp
ayer pedimos una orden por telephone 25mns antes de ir la a recoger y tuvimos que esperar una hora para que estuviera lista......nos gusta su comida pero en realidad esperar una hora y media es demaciado.

Alfonzo M.

Yelp
Ordered a molcajete and the cook gave me my very own personal concert . It was amazing 10/10 service.

Emelo S.

Yelp
los molcajetes de jermias estan buenos. Dura mucho para Que de dan la comida pero estan buenos . Tabien puede cantar muy bien

Paulina V.

Yelp
They take to long to serve food there is only a small quantity of people and they still take 40Minutes to bring your food out! Never coming back

Shelly L.

Yelp
The Birria was spot on! Corn tortillas made fresh were perfect for making homemade Quesabirria tacos . Also bought some carnitas and man is it good! Strongly recommend this little Market restaurant combo.

Quinn A.

Yelp
Come for the pan dulce and café de olla, stay for ... well .... everything. Waiting outside in the parking lot for my friend, the aroma of mesquite wood smoke was making this vegetarian very nostalgic for a big plate of carne asada. Ain't gonna happen, just saying. When we went inside it was even more tortuous. Every table has some sizzling plate of something brought to them while I was there. I raided the bakery case and had a sinful plate full of cinnamon, rainbow sprinkles, and crunchy sugar. After my meeting I browsed around the store and found all those little ingredients you need to make something authentic. Service was fast and friendly. This is about an hour from Portland, and a good place to stop for first breakfast if you're adventuring along I-5. And then, why not, stop there again for 2nd dinner on your way home.

Joel L.

Yelp
Closest thing to Mexico in the Capital City of Oregon. From the restaurant side with a great menu to the market side it's a fantastic place to get some great tasting authentic Mexican food. Most likely will smell this place before you see it, BBQ'ing chicken outside smelled so good. They do catering as well!

Renee B.

Yelp
I had heard that the chicken was very good. I bought a whole chicken to go. It smelled so good as I was driving home. When I got home I opened the lid. There was a dead fly on a piece of the meat. I was so disappointed. I could have taken it back to the store but I live like 20 minutes away. My advice is to look at the food before you leave.

mark f.

Yelp
Go for the chicken and you'll be amazed by the rest of the menu. Chicken cooked on their grill Friday thru Sunday the restaurant and Mercado open 7 days. Great food great prices. You'll love the chicken!!!!'

Josie N.

Yelp
Like going here for lunch. Portions are big and the price point is fair. They offer Hispanic type treats and foods which is nice. Their deli section is quite big, their bakery is hit or miss. Sometimes has a bunch of flies flying around in the hotter months so kinda yucky. Baked goods I don't think is fresh daily. Their tamales are full of mass and very little meat which is disappointing, but salads is good. All in all restaurant is good, grocery are is spotty.

Yelp
I've been meaning to write a review for El Ranchero Market ! Gotta love supporting a locally owned small business. A one stop shop for affordable / flavorful food, fresh produce and variety of great choices at the bakery and market! Parking is easy and never an issue, inside is clean and staff is friendly! I'd highly recommend coming here and for sure will tell everyone about this place ! Be sure to ask about their Aldo's Nachos CON TODO ! =) Nachos LOADED with fresh ingredients that will surely leave you full, but wanting to come back for more!

maddie p.

Yelp
Amazing family restaurant - we got the molcajete to share it was amazing. Omg the salsa melted with the cheese was out of control and so fun to eat with thick handmade corn tortillas. Such a crucial stop!!

Shadi Z.

Yelp
You guys check this Mexican restaurant. I live in Vancouver WA and I heard about this restaurant from my friend. Drive 60 miles and what I can say is wow!!! FOOD IS AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS! Also I had the best spice coffee and I will definitely be back soon.

Jose G.

Yelp
Ordered online for a 7am pick up off there website. When I arrived to pick it up, they said there kitchen doesn't open until 8am. I was expecting to pick up food but instead came home with nothing. Was supposed to get refunded but till this day have not seen a cent refunded. This was a month ago.

Mary W.

Yelp
Wow!!! We finally stop at this place to get roasted chicken that we have been smelling for months. It is a restaurant and small supermarket in one place. Staff was very friendly and went far and beyond to help and answer any questions we had. There is fresh bakery, butcher, hot food to go or sit down and other household items you can get. Great experience and food is excellent. After a conversation with a cashier we found out he is also obe of the owner. Thank you Diego for all your help.

Matthew F.

Yelp
I dont just come here for the Carne Asada fries but I could because they are that awesome. Their produce and grocery is a life saver, affordable and fresh. The bakery is heavenly, and I've almost never left empty handed from the large variety of pastry options almost always completely in stock

Elsie H.

Yelp
Got an amazing mangoneada today! At the fruit stand, they are seriously generous with their portions. Their selection is huge, and social distancing is enforced. They have a large selection of breads, and their conchas are soft, flaky, and delicious! I saw that they sell marinated meats, but there was a big line, so that means it must be super good! I saw a negative review complaining that people didn't speak English here. I don't really know what he expected-- when you're entering a space catering to people of a culture different than yours, why would the people who work there cater to you? People from abroad don't show up to Walmart and expect the employees to speak whatever language they speak! I speak Spanish, and the cashiers were super kind and seemed happy to be there. Even if I didn't speak Spanish, it would've been a great first visit. Don't let your ignorance keep you from coming to a great market!!!

Sara J.

Yelp
A friend had recommended this restaurant so we decided to stop by. I have to say this place is a gem in the mist of all the other restaurants nearby. The meal I chose was a plate with chicken, rice, beans, tortillas, and some salad. This meal was so delicious. The chicken has so much flavor. I definitely recommend this place. The food is just amazing. Plus they have a little market inside and a bakery.

Dmitri L.

Yelp
Tried to order several times at this place over the phone and I get hung up on and told that they don't speak English...some one different when I go in but I don't get it the menu is in full English why would they have Spanish only speaking people and be on Yelp..I go to a few places in town like the market in Keizer their entire menue all Spanish I don't ask questions or anything I try my best to say it in Spanish I fully get it their entire menus is English and they are on a app...no reason to be turned down because I don't speak Spanish....

Allana N.

Yelp
Always great and speedy service! They have added some waitresses to the staff who are very nice. Food excellent as always.

Paula F.

Yelp
Fantastic pollo asado - pit cooked chicken. Great portions and great salsa and good homemade tortillas. I will be coming back, and will try their groceries too.

Keegan C.

Yelp
Really good food homemade tortillas the pozole was great and a huge bowl I woulda gave the place 5 stars but the service is awful I waited 15 min for a menu and even longer to get the check I just got up and waited at the register for 5 min like I said food is great tho!

Dustin C.

Yelp
Been always wanting to try the BBQ chicken, that came to fruition today! Wow, good stuff! They were out of tortillas and since I could not wait 15 minutes for them, the staff were nice enough to give me my choice of extra beans, or rice "I chose the rice." Have read in previous posts that the staff are rude, I firmly believe this not to be the case. They are busy! I find their efficiency most commendable! So if you want to go somewhere and converse with someone while they work, go to Shari's! All in all, place was packed! So obviously they are turning out a good product at an affordable price. Will definitely go back and recommend to others!

Brittany V.

Yelp
OMG WHAT THE F***, this place is killer. How have I lived in Salem for 2 years and not had this food. Get the cheesy taco dippy things !

Brandon S.

Yelp
This was a tough one for me. I love the market section, and frequently buy fresh meat to take home. This was my first time trying the restaurant side, and my son and I just weren't that impressed. I was tempted to try the all-you-can-eat tacos (it was a Tuesday), but my wife gives me a look when I do that. I had the mole chicken, but it was a bit more on the bitter side than I prefer. My son was not impressed with his taquitos plate.

Gene J.

Yelp
My wife and I went here for the first time this evening. What a pleasant surprise! Our food was served promptly and was hot and very flavorful, the waitress was very friendly and took good care of our needs. The place was clean and orderly and very comfortable. We will not hesitate to return and will recommend El Ranchero to everyone

Elisabeth W.

Yelp
Very good food the salsa had some great flavor and heat I was very impressed. This will be my new go to for Mexican food and asada..

Reshell B.

Yelp
If only they had a location in Twin Falls Idaho... I would be there every day! I had a breakfast burrito but I'm just gonna say it was amazing!!! The other food cooking on the open fire smelled soooo good.

Andrew F.

Yelp
Yesterday I went there and the service was good for me, the food I ordered was really tasty and much better after all! This old building was Marie Callender's Restaurant & Bakery which closed in 2011, it wasn't vacant too long. In 2012 El Ranchero Market came along and took over the old Marie Callender's. The bathroom even looks the same as last time and kitchen also.

Karly R.

Yelp
We went twice in a weekend to get their chicken! So good! Friendly and helpful staff. Will be back again

Sheree D.

Yelp
This place has the best homemade tortilla tacos!! Our server was amazing! They have the restaurant, the meat market and store. Awesome place, I will be back

Amber N.

Yelp
Just had my sisters wedding and was heart broken to deal with poor service on what was supposed to be the happiest day. First we had a quoted price on beef which they hired the price on later, then we were supposed to have two servers at the wedding quoted into the contract which they also contradicted. We also were missing additional sides (guacamole, onions, cilantro, sour cream and the beans were completely watered down) that were quoted. When they cut the chicken they cut it incorrectly and it was actually very dangerous to eat because of all the split Chicken bones. Please, please make sure if you choose them for your caterer make sure that you are very very specific in your contract or they'll take advantage of you. They did refund a portion of these issues but never the less these things should never have had to deal with on the wedding day..... UPDATE- I was contacted by the "owner" Diego telling me I had the wrong company but here's the business card so apparently I had 100% the correct company.

Michaela W.

Yelp
We're from Arizona, and this is the first Mexican restaurant we found in Oregon where all of the choices are amazing. The owner stopped by our table and said all the fresh ingredients are sourced locally-- you can taste the quality. Tamales, fajitas, chile rellenos--all were excellent. Good $3 marg during happy hour.9pio

Sheldon A.

Yelp
This place used to be, hands down, my favorite place to eat. I will keep the review short, but I believe there was a change in ownership and since then the service has gone down hill. My wife and I were seated and then ignored for the remainder of our time there. We were there long enough to see 4 other groups be seated and given their drinks and chips. We were not in a corner, or hidden, but we were ignored while they were taking other groups orders right next to us. Was a bit disappointing. Time to find a new place to eat.

Sharon M.

Yelp
Place is legit! "El sabor de Mexico" (the flavor of Mexico) without the plane fare to Cancun/Tulum. Not your bland Gringo-Mex version that is hard to avoid, but the really good flavors that make traveling a joy. Can't wait to go back!

Matt M.

Yelp
They had terrible service there Hope they hire better and nicer employees but no one is perfect lol

Jhaslaine R.

Yelp
My family and I came to have dinner because we heard the food is delicious and they aren't wrong. We enjoyed it. But the service is horrible. Once they bring you your food they don't check back and when you ask a waiter for more tortillas they forget and don't bring it. We asked for more chips and they never came. And you have to ask again and they "forget"and you ask for the third time and they finally bring them after you've waited for about 15 min. The servers have to be more attentive to the customers. We left very un happy.

Erin H.

Yelp
Barf! I gave the place one more chance and was turned off by two factors this time: the poopy smell was worse than last time and a new employee (maybe owner?) who was rude as heck and smelled just like the bathroom! His name tag said 'victor' and he was decked out in the sweatiest, most filthy shirt I had ever seen and smelled like he was solely responsible for the fece smell dominating the restaurant. Unbelievable! He acted like he couldn't understand what I was saying, but then spoke clearly with the person behind me. My order came out after theirs, even though I had just one order of two tacos. Finally, the salsa bar was just as bad as last time. Although I did not elaborate, it was a wasteland of half melted ice and empty salsa buckets. Two were on their sides, for heaven's sake! I'm not even going to mention the flies. Oh, the flies... The absolute sign of uncleanliness.

Maureen J.

Yelp
This was our first visit, and we were so pleasantly surprised. I had a combination dish of tamale, enchilada, and two rolled tacos with rice, beans, and salad. My husband had the Alambre Ranchero. Both dinners were excellent. They had some great tasting salsas. The green sauce being our favorite. There was so much food we had to take about half home with us. The waitress was very nice and made us feel like family. They had a clean restaurant and we felt safe as they spaced out the tables. Prior to tonight we had no idea there was such a great restaurant inside of this market. We will certainly make this a favorite restaurant and return. Oh, and I was told that they do Molcajete on the weekends. She told us that its beef, chicken and shrimp in a large stone bowl. Sounds delicious.

Paige S.

Yelp
By far the best carne asada and best tortillas in the world. LOVE this place. Service was excellent

Gary J.

Yelp
We went as my wife wanted to try their cerviche. I had the #3, my wife had the cerviche and tamale. Delicious food, my wife is from a Hispanic family and said the best tamale she has had in a while. We will definitely be back.

Cierra H.

Yelp
Best horchata and homemade tortillas! Everything made here is delicious and prices are very fair. The meat market often has things cheaper than the grocery store. They always make things fresh but on the weekends they grill chicken all day and you can even buy a whole one to take home

Alicia R.

Yelp
Great food! BUT horrible service! We waited for 1 1/2 hours for our to go food, almost 2 hours waiting! That's ridiculous. There wasn't even that much people. We ordered first & then a lot of people started coming in & we were noticing that they were being served fast, the lady that took our order had already served 3 tables & we still hadn't gotten our food! When we asked her about it she said she forgot to put our order in! Yes we could've left right there but we thought we already waited this long so might as well! So we waited again for it & when we got our order she charged us & she gave us the wrong change back, she also forgot our 2 tamales we ordered & our tortillas ! I was very annoyed. I love their food but they need to work on their service.

Sindy C.

Yelp
Best food and great prices, however I gave 4 stars because the service is awful, never got water refills, never were asked if we needed any thing else, had to chase some one down for a box to take leftovers.
