El Rancho Mexican Restaurant

I absolutely LOVE El Rancho!! While all their food is amazing, I tend to gravitate towards the chunky pork in red sauce Mexican sandwich with cheese on top!!! That sandwich is to die for!!! The meat is so tender and the sauce is so savory and delicious!!! The layers of rice, beans and tortilla all melt together so nicely. It's a definite must try!!

I’ve eaten a lot of burritos in my life and this was possibly the best I’ve ever had. Wow was that great!

I've eaten here for dinner many times and it never disappoints. The food is authentic (try the cheese enchiladas), the service is always fast and friendly, the atmosphere is perfection. (Park in back and check out the fantastic gate.) Recently, I had El Rancho cater an event for me and I couldn't be happier. I received exceptional value and they worked with me to create the perfect package to suit my needs. They thoughtfully included everything I might need to make the meal a success. Their chips and salsa can be packaged individually (genius!) at no extra charge and my guest very much appreciated it. Speaking of 'no extra charge', there were no hidden add-ons and pricing was very reasonable and transparent. I was able to pay over the phone and received my receipt when I picked up the food. The food was packaged exceptionally well, making it easy to transport with no worries of spillage and the food stayed warm enough to be the perfect serving temperature at my event.

Been a decade since last visit, same great Mexican food over 40 years. Next door to my favorite Mexican market E&L Supermercado easy to find. Mega free parking lot in rear with security guard on duty. We shared a Queso Fundio be hot 🔥 bubbly Cheese n Chorizo yummy 😋. I ordered my favorite Mexican breakfast Chilquites with Rice Beans Tortillas Wowed spot on wonderful 👍. Had the marvelous Chicken 🐔 Mole I so Loved 😍, Chicken Leg n Thigh drenched with thick fabulous Moles Sauce OMG a winner 😋💯. Thanks Yolanda for the superstar service 😄. I been suggesting for a long time to merge the 2 Facebook pages, they definitely losing customers because of this. I've been coming here over 15 years. Never been disappointed whatsoever. But tonight my boyfriend went and picked us up dinner. I ordered a Mexican sandwich Chunky Beef and the meat was dry. There was no gravy on it. Whatsoever, the manager said, that's because I ordered light cheese, which it has never looked like this with light cheese before. So tonight is the three stars.It's always been good but highly disappointed, and she told me that I could not bring it back.Not even to get it replaced. I have a photo of it, but it does not give me the option to show. 😞

We had the steak quesadilla and the cheese appetizer to split with 2 people, asked if they could be brought out at the same time. They said yes but the appetizer was brought out way before. Also we ordered a pitcher of margarita to split and there was so much ice in it we didn't even get 2 glasses each and the price was over almost 50 for that. The beans and rice sucked BAD and they charged my friend for sour cream and she didn't even get none. I got some but for 2.50 i could have went to E.L next store and bought a big one. We will never be coming back there and we will also inform our friends and family. To many great restaurants down there to put up with yuk. Almost 80 dollars for 1 dinner, 1 appetizer and the pitcher of (ICE)

I was ignored on CINCO DE MAYO had to ask to be seated the restaurant was almost empty complete reason I came because it’s a tiny place. I Ordered 3 enchiladas and was charged $13.99 FOR A WHOLE dinner for 3 small enchiladas a lacart BUSINESS OWNER CAUSED THE WAITRESS HER TIP TELLING ME SHE GAVE ME THE BETTER PRICE. $30 for a kids meal which was $5 a corona and 3 enchiladas YEAH THEY GOT ME BUT THIS WILL BE MY LAST VISIT FROM A 30 YEAR CUSTOMER.

This was my first time eating at this restaurant.. Came here with my office colleagues for lunch. Complimentary crispy and tasty tortilla chips and salsa set the tone for an enjoyable Mexican culinary adventure. Soup was also offered. Ordered Chicken Enchiladas. Came in a tasty wrap, along with rice and salad. It was very tasty with right spices. Service was excellent. Looking forward to visit again for another experience.

Top place in sw detoit. Outstanding food. Great service. Locals all eat there. Our go to spot when we are downtown.

We are visiting Holland Michigan from Arizona. We said to ourselves what do they know about Mexican food in Michigan? Until, we ate at El Rancho. The service was great and the food excellent. We ordered the Green Chili plate and the Relleno Plate. Everything had a great flavor and texture. We will be back!

Nice clean traditional Mexican restaurant in Mexican town . Very friendly good service . Tried a new dish and it was pretty good even if I have nothing to compare it to . They also sell Mexican soda pops in glass bottles .

We came here for lunch and it was my first time here in Detroit. The food had such great authentic flavor next to some amazing salsas. The staff was friendly and inviting. The atmosphere was busy for lunch and the price was perfect.

The food was good. Side note: they charge you for the bean soup "free" appetizer.. Chips were fresh, salsa was salsaing. I ordered the Taco dinner and was happy. It's not the best in the area, but it's good enough for lunch. The service was good, the restaurant was clean and setup well.

I hate that I have to create such an awful review. I love their food and the service is usually great. Today, 7 of us decided to purchase lunch from El Rancho Mexican Restaurant, like many times before. Unfortunately today was not a great experience. We ordered 4 menudo's, 1 steak milanessa, and a 2 taco lunch combo. When the driver returned with our food. All but one Menudo busted all over her back seat, causing such a mess for her. One of the menudo was still in the plastic bag with all of the juice out of the container, luckily the plastic bag that it was in did not burst. Here's the where the problem derives. I called and spoke to a women named Maria. She was very nice and definitely held her composer with me. I was very nice at first, until she had me send her a picture of what I thought she wanted. I sent her a picture of the only Menudo left. She was nice enough to give me her cell number so that I could send her that picture. She told me she would call me back once she received it. I called her back about 15 minutes late, I had hungry workers that only get a half for lunch. Maria told me that she had to call Alfonso the owner. When she called me back, this is where I had my attitude. She told me that she would refund me for the Salsa that they forgot to put in the bag( Not the end of the world, things happen) but she could not do anything for the Menudos. She advised me that Alfonso could not understand how three Meudos could melt through the container and bust the bag that they were individually in. I felt as though they where calling me a liar. She said they have been selling Menudo and shipping it out that way with no issues. Well Alfonso!!! Looks like the containers you are using may not be the best batch yet. I was not looking for a handout, I just wanted things made right. Alfonso, You are very unprofessional and we will not be spending our money with you anymore. It's a shame that you could not help make a customer happy when the malfunction was on your end. My family and I have been coming to El Ranchos for over 20 years. That will not be happening anymore. I can tell that you probably do not care. That is okay though. your loss

Went out with friends to a show at the Fox Theater and planned to go to Armando's beforehand, but it was packed. Stumbled upon El Rancho a bit further down the road and was pleasantly surprised! Chips and salsa were great, good service, and delicious dinners with generous portions. We'll be back!

Our third choice to come here. But the other nearby places were packed. It was "ok" at best. My husband had the mole enchiladas and those were good. My one daughter had carne asada which was decent. My other daughter and I got enchiladas that didn't show till everyone else was basically done eating. The chips and salsa were decent too. Overall a three star experience. I did use the restroom and I'd say it was unsanitary and very dirty. And the service was more like 2 stars. But I'll stick with three overall. Maybe they were understaffed tonight.

Love their breakfast! We have come for it twice now. The huevos rancheros are awesome and so are the huevos con chorizo. The rice and beans are delicious. They let you pick flour or corn tortillas with your meal. Our daughter could not get enough of the flour tortillas. Our son has gotten crunchy beef tacos both times for breakfast . He loves them. The taco shells are made to order. So crunchy and fresh. We love their salsa too!

Hijole!!! I wish I could give it 3.5 stars It's been a while that I've been here, but since I was in the vicinity I stopped to have breakfast. After I got table and waiting close to 10 minutes, I had to get the hostess to take my order. I got the coffee right away, but my Huevos Rancheros took another 10 minutes. I asked for my flatware and it took a few minutes. And, when I am ready to eat I realize I got flour tortillas instead of corn. Innocent mistake?!! Sure, but I was hungry ‍

Out of all the Mexican restaurants in Mexican Town, I always dread when my coworkers want to go here. The food is very bland, you have to add salsa to give flavor to any meals. I am not a fan of their enchilada sauce again little flavor. Also their prices are more expensive than those in the area. Never had a problem with their service.

Absolutely horrible food. Guacamole, flavorless... beans and rice were cold. Beans were watered down. Flautas were so hard and cold couldn't eat them. Sent it all back. Husband had fajitas, beef so tough you couldn't chew it. Didn't even come out sizzling, just on a plate coated with grease. Told the manager when we left and all he said was " have you been here before " no and never again! Save your money go somewhere else.

I have been a regular customer for years, always leaving a five dollar tip+gratuity.. The service has always been great but at my last visit I had a small bowl of soup and six beef tacos to go and was hit with a bill over thirty dollars, after I told the girl it was an overcharge and way to expensive for what I ordered she ignored my concern and rang it up without an explanation... So I will no longer dine at El Rancho and have found another Mexican restaurant that offers the same menu items I ordered there at half the price. It's a shame I didn't even get the consideration or respect for being a loyal customer for over 25 years, So I paid for the outrageous and overpriced meal and left, You lost a good customer...Adios El Rancho.

Best guisado de res and crunchy tacos around. My family had been coming here for decades. Try the breakfast!! The soup with lunch is delicious.

Descent food..... fair price.... Very young staff..... not much of an atmosphere.... Wouldn't be my first choice when heading out for the night, but ok for 3rd choice.

My first time here and wasn't disappointed. The place wasn't crowded , the drinks were but one the second one half off and the food was good . I would recommend this place and I will be back .

I've been hearing about El Rancho for a while from friends that work nearby. They swear by it. We had a late lunch today and both had egg dishes. POSITIVES: The chilaquiles were quite good. The eggs were perfectly cooked. Still moist - not cooked to death like many other places. My wife's nopalitos were similarly well prepared BUT had quite a bit of cheese thrown on top. I've not been to another place that put cheese on eggs with cactus. The restaurant itself is spotless and had a nice kind of casual feel. The service was good. They have a liquor license. They also have their own large parking lot behind the restaurant so you don't have to park on Vernor. NEGATIVES: The chips seemed a little old. The 2 salsas were just OK. I've gotten used to the radish/salsa/chips at places like Los Altos or Los Corrales ===== I'll definitely go again and rounding up to 4 stars.

Last night we drove to Southwest and seen the sign out front that said 8 AM to 8 PM carry out only, we had to stop, we've eaten at this location before and loved it. So my husband went in and ordered and about 10 minutes later he went back in to get our food and not only did we get phenomenal food but they also gave us a roll of toilet paper they are giving them out Anderson he are individually wrapped to their customers. What an awesome awesome idea during this time and we enjoyed our food so much we actually called on our way out of the parking lot and promised them that we would tell everyone about them and I just hope everyone gives them a chance absolutely phenomenal service and food.

What happened to great Mexican food in Detroit? Horrible food! Everything is already made in advance and just warmed up. The chips must've came out of an opened bag. The restaurant needs updating. I used to come here 29 years ago and the food was incredible. What happened? Old crusty food. Old booths! The combo plate with enchiladas and burritos was old and stale. Horrible food!

Pretty good. I got the flour combination plate. It was a good amount of food and everything was tasty. The horchata here is absolutely delicious. Chips and salsa were ordinary. This place was pretty good but but I don't think I'd go out of my way for it.

By far the best Mexican in Detroit. The hard shell tacos and also the salsa are amazing. They make everything in house....even the tortilla chips. Very clean and great service!

A family favorite for my husband but my 1st time. . I yelp all our new restaurants so I was a little afraid to try but. . I think they must have had some tuff yelpers... The food was really good, love the salsa.. they give you 2 different kinds, one hotter than the other. . Complimentary charro beans, I order the beef tacos, crispy and my husband ordered the chorizo plate.. my husband did say the chorizo had a little too much vinegar in it but was meaty and didn't taste bad. We also order the mini botana, but it was no mini. . Rather large for us but I'm sure the homeless man in the alley enjoyed it.

They have really good flour tacos! They were crunchy and soft at the same time. The waitress was sweet and helpful ; she got the orders correct and made sure everyone has what they needed. As well as checked up on us frequently. Got cheesecake for dessert and it was baked well. I would definitely go back again.

Wonderful homestyle norteno food. friendly service, great portions and always several lunch specials to choose from for $5.00. I recommend this place to those who love a good mole' theirs is rich, thick and chocolatey. the chicken is so tender if falls off the bones. freshly made tortillas served with your meal remind one of home cooking. I suggest you try the hot salsa with a cold beer so you can get a real taste of the fire of mexico. this place sees me once a month like a religious experience. Delicious, Friendly and Fresh Family Fare.

We wanted an authentic Mexican breakfast and this hit the spot! The waitstaff was very polite and attentive. I ordered the chilaquiles which were awesome. I ate more than I should have but it tasted so good I couldn't stop.

Food and service were good. Restaurant was clean and they have their own fenced parking lot on back. Big negative was the $8 margaritas, and they weren't even that large!

Was completely empty on a Wednesday night.Nice murals on the outside though! 5 - salsa to go: red and chunky - tasted a lot like Pace 5.5 - carne asada (steak): chewy - only flavors are meat and pepper 6.5 - pollo (chicken): on the drier side, but good texture between thick and tender - slightly marinated N/A - al pastor (pork): they don't have pork tacos I'm nonplussed with the tacos and the salsa really turned me off. --------------- Notes for list: - I go in blind - no reviews no nothin' - just me and my own palate - parading down the Vernor Hwy strip (and some offshoots) - ranked out of 10: 10 being the best street tacos from Mexico (in small towns and big cities) - short and to the point: sorry, no fancy artful writing - a girl's gotta plow through these puppies!

A decent neighborhood place that caters to the American Mex Palate. Being a former Energy Efficiency Employee Ive been in the Kitchen to do some upgrades and It's one of the Cleanest Ive ever seen. Thank God. Because their Super Nachos are out of this world good!!!! They have a huge menu and their pretty quick and theyre fried ice cream is pretty good.

The gf and I came in on a Friday evening. We started off with a Spanish coffee and a margarita. Absolutely zero alcohol, and the coffee was straight trash. Ordered a second margarita to replace the Spanish coffee and it was equally garbage. The server didn't bring us any waters so we could wash down our trash cocktails. The only reason I'm giving El Rancho an additional star is because the chips and salsa were good, just good. The gf wanted to add that the tables were very sticky.

OK, el rancho. i feel bad for you. i came here on cinco de mayo. they had good cocktails and good happy hour prices. they had a really good botana and it was covered with oozy cheese and lots of good fresh veggies, including avocados. the chips were just horrible. they tasted like old supermarket chips. the salsas were boring. when a salsa is boring, its the worst thing you can say. the other food my friends ordered really weren't very good. the problem is, i have at least three really great restaurants within walking (or a short drive) distance. those restaurants serve fresh, interesting mexican food. love, juston

Every time I'm in the area I risk my life by venturing into the barrio just to go here for a meal and to get a couple of quarts of their salsa and a big greasy paper grocery bag full of chips to go. El Rancho is out of the cluster of tourist joints so you won't find any Novi tools in Red Wings gear. Instead you will see average Mexicans, and by average I mean they are as dirty as the neighborhood they inhabit and I mean that in a good way. That tells you the food here is reasonably priced home style cooking. One time my waitress offered me a free bowl of fresh menudo as I waited for my lunch. It was the best vegetable noodle soup I'd ever tasted until I found out the noodles were actually pieces of intestines. I can still say it was the best bowl of intestines I will ever eat but that's mainly due to the fact that I won't eat it again because the thought grosses me out. Anyway, my favorite is the ground beef and cheese burrito dinner with a bunch of their hot salsa dumped over top. I could eat that stuff 7 days a week.

I used to go there a lot about 15 years ago and just went back today. I was delighted at the authenticity and simplicity of their food that made me love the place. I used to get huevo rancheros but this time went for margaritas and tamales. DELICIOSO!!!!

Really yummy mexican food! for once the entire family agrees on a restaurant we had amazing service from Martina she helped us pick our food and it was amazing and fairly priced 10/10 would highly recommend!

Not my favorite in the area, but not the worst either. The spicy salsa was pretty good, I have to say. I think this is pretty typical Mexican-American fare, but I would eat here again.

2.5. :-/ I was hoping it would be better. It came highly recommended to me by my friend from "the res." But I think the later at night you go, the worse it gets. My chile relleno came out a sopping mess and not very spicy at all. The chips were somewhat stale. The salsa, however, was quite good. And I got to watch a tele-novella while waiting for my food so that obviously improved my mood. I'm sure I'll be back and I just hope I can justify the 0.5 star I've rounded up to.

I walk by El Rancho at least once a week when I'm on my way to lunch. I finally had the chance to visit with some co-workers a group of 6 at noon. We were seated quickly. The chips were decent as well as the salsa. I was surprised when the soup came out. It was good, but one of my group members could not eat it because they do not eat meat. I choose the lunch special of chicken enchiladas, which was pretty good. I have had better in Mexicantown though. It has a nice location and the price is very reasonable.

El Rancho is a family tradition of mine. We come here each time my sister visits from LA (sometimes twice: divorced parents, lol) but despite the place reserved in my heart due to novelty, it isn't a place I'd go to if I was looking for a meal that tantalized my taste buds. No, this is the place to go to for quality, yet not quite intriguing "home food". And if you take a look around, I think most people agree. It's standard Mexican American fare served with a friendly and warm smile that makes anything you eat taste comforting. Most patrons come with family or friends and the hospitality of the entire staff in undoubtedly what brings return patrons. Sure, their food is good, but it isn't authentic Mexican and it's not even the best Mexican American in the area. I would highly recommend their breakfast, however, since it seems like they have a larger menu than other nearby establishments. Additionally, it's a nice buffer restaurant for those of you desiring Mexican without jumping all the way into taquerias.

I have tried several restaurant in this area and I like El Rancho far better than any. I am looking forward to going back very soon.

You have lost a customer. When a customer calls asking how long you will be open for a carry out and lie and say if you get there by a certain time you are open but then when we call to make certain you are good you are all of a sudden CLOSED!! Don't bother with El Rancho; obviously they do not care about their customers anymore.

I'd give El Rancho a 4.5 for breakfast and a 2 for lunch. I've been there for breakfast more than once and they have deals for $5 that is more food than you can eat. The nopalitos and chilaquiles are reliably rich and delicious Lunch is just as good of a deal, but the food simply isn't as good. I've only gone twice at lunch, thinking the first time was a fluke, but I think considering the other options in the neighborhood, it's just ok. Go for breakfast and you won't regret it.

Chips & salas were good, except the chip basket looked dirty, old, and disgusting. Meals were not good, except for the roasted chili pepper. Tamales came unhusked and were mostly masa with minimal pork; they were also cold. Rice and beans were cold. Short ribs tasted terrible. The atmosphere is strange. It was evening and it was unnecessarily bright in there. The ceiling lamps have antlers on them. There was no music. I don't know where to go in MexicanTown to get good food. Although I haven't reviewed the other places, the ones I've been to are unimpressive. Can someone recommend a place that is worthwhile?

I paid $9.15 before tip for a lunch of one chicken taco, one chicken tostada and one fountain drink. This is my usual order when I try a Mexican Town restaurant for the first time. There will not be a second time.

Huevos con pappas y chorizo! There is nothing more to say. My grandfather would make this dish for me when I was young. This is an excellent substitution. The tortillas are always warm and chips fresh. The salsa is also close to what my grandfather made; a thinner and smoother consistency rather than the chunky, more commercialized version. The portions are large and great value for your dollar. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. The bathrooms are spotless. The staff is more than accommodating. The dining room is divided into two large rooms with ample seating. They also have a full service bar. Unfortunately, the coffee is passable at best,

Ive been going to this place for many years. Its always been good to me. I would definitly recommend this place. They will make your chorizo And eggs with egg whites also. Great place for breakfast lunch or dinner.

I have eaten here in the past and this visit was terrible. We entered a nearly empty restaurant and it took over an hour to get our food. The service was terrible and the food was mediocre and cold when it arrived. Our drink order arrived and it was wrong as well. During our long wait we asked the hostess for help. Ultimately a woman walked up informed us she was the manager and it was her role to take care of us. She was rude and harsh. The food arrived with no condiments. We asked for a side of pico de gallo which came to us as about a tablespoon of onions and nothing else. When we got the bill she charged a $1.49 for it. No thank you, no I am sorry. The woman at the cash register just shook her head. I strongly suggest that owners look for a new manager.

There are a lot of great Mexican restaurants in Southwest Detroit. This, however, is not one of them. The service was beyond terrible, our food took forever to come out and was cold when it finally came out. I told the waitress my food was cold and she took my plate away without any apology. It came back a couple of minutes later on a new plate, clearly having been thrown in a microwave for a minute. The tacos were just meat in a tortilla...no onions or cilantro. It was supposed to come with pico de gallo but that was missing. They ran out of Modelo Especial after we had one round. They ran out of chips and were supposedly making more but we never got a fresh basket. The worst part is there was never any apology or concern from our server. Other tables had similar complaints about how long it took for their food to be served as well. We won't ever go there again and I would advise anyone else to avoid it as well.
