El Remanso | Best places to stay in Costa Rica

"Stays at Remanso are all about losing yourself in nature. One of Costa Rica’s wildest stretches of rainforest sits outside your villa door and a pristine Pacific beach is a stroll away. Palm-thatch villas in rich hardwoods perch on a hillside; The best have sweeping forest and ocean views from the luxurious king sizes, with generous plunge pool terraces outside. The lodge keeps environmental impact to a minimum: recycling, running on renewable energy and gathering fallen wood to maintain and build cabins. " - Alex Robinson

This is one of the best places and most beautiful hotels I have visited. The location is wonderful, surrounded by primary rainforest and close to an enchanting, wild and deserted beach. Nature and wildlife are abundant and can so easily be seen around the hotel and through marked trails in the surrounding forest and across high walkways and bridges. |The rooms are very tastefully designed and decorated, with a natural flow of air and ceiling fans. The staff are amazingly attentive and helpful. The guides are so knowledgeable. The meals are delicious.|what is not too like?

Although we did not stay at this hotel, we had the pleasure to experience one of their excursions. We participated in the waterfall canyoneering hike where you walk down 4 different waterfalls, and then indulge in a nature hike with the most beautiful views of Costa Rica. We then were able to eat lunch at their AMAZING restaurant and cafe in the hotel. This hotel is absolutely beautiful. From the views, animals, and amazing hotel staff. Tatyana, one of the chefs at the hotel, prepared us an amazing lunch. It was absolutely delicious and one of the best meals we had during our week long stay in Costa Rica. She was absolutely amazing, and so nice to us during our short time at the hotel. Our tour guides Aro and Tony were absolutely amazing. Very knowledgeable on all nature questions during our activity and made us feel more than safe doing something that none of us have experience doing. I definitely will be coming back!

This was my first experience of the rainforest in Costa Rica and I could not have asked for more. El Remanso is a 16 room property in the heart of the Osa Peninsula. It has a strong eco philosophy and approach. It feels intimate, very personal and very private. I was travelling with a friend and we had our flight to Puerto Jimenez cancelled. The staff helped us quickly find an alternative route via a flight to Golfito and they helped arrange a boat ride across the bay to PJ. A bonus - we saw dolphins on the boat trip (the driver was amazing stopping to allow us to see them up close). The rooms themselves are simple & low key. There is no air conditioning, but there are ceiling fans and the airflow is perfect. TBH in that environment personally I would not want it as this approach really connects you to the outside environment (which is the point !). There are outdoor showers which was beautiful. I did a few of the guided forest walks & the waterfall repelling which was a fantastic experience (thank you Eli & Herrol !). The beach is gorgeous (nothing like the sounds of the open ocean - the Pacific). Delicious coffee is dropped off at your room around 5.30am (it's left outside) which was a brilliant touch ahead of breakfast. The staff are universally amazing - shout out to Edyn, Joshua, Bryan, Rosa (TBH everyone). Very accommodating of all our dietary requirements & quirks (all sauces on the side !). I was celebrating a birthday and on our final night they set up a beautiful arrangement at dinner, some bubbles and a delicious passionfruit flavoured cake. Overall a beautiful location, gorgeous lodge, food wonderful and everyone working there makes the place so special ! Do yourself a favour and stay at El Remanso !

El Remanso Rainforest Lodge has set the bar so high that I fear no other hotel will ever compare. From the moment we arrived until the day we left, every aspect of our stay exceeded expectations.|The entire staff, Rinaldo, Dari, and Rosa, were all truly exceptional. They were warm, welcoming, and attentive to every detail. Our tour guides, Eliezer, Roy, Tony, and Ronald, were equally impressive: knowledgeable, passionate, and eager to share their love for the rainforest and for the Osa Peninsula.|The lodge itself is spectacular, nestled between lush forest and a pristine beach—there’s hardly any reason to leave. We stayed in a bungalow with breathtaking views of both the sea and the forest. Each morning and evening, we watched monkeys and birds right from our window.|The included food was a highlight, with every meal delicious and the servers, Enrique, Brian, Joselito, and Stefani, going above and beyond to accommodate any dietary restrictions. The daily activities, the beautiful pool, and the outstanding service all contribute to making this lodge worthwhile, even given its high price.|It was remarkable how the entire staff always seemed to know which tours and activities we had planned, making us feel like their most important guests at all times.|Take their advice seriously about needing a 4WD vehicle to access the lodge. You’ll want high clearance on your car to navigate the road easily and avoid any damage.|Leaving El Remanso truly felt like saying goodbye to family, and we were genuinely sad to go. This place has ruined all my future hotel experiences, but in the best way possible. We will definitely be back.

Our way to the hotel after landing on the Osa Peninsula was a guided tour in itself. Our driver stopped at every animal which made our five year old daughter super excited. Arriving at the lodge we were greeted in the nicest way by Kevin and were taken to an AMAZING room. The hotel was very well organized, clean, very comfortable beds and extremely child friendly. The guided tours with either Ronald, Roy or Edgar were the highlight of every day. Seeing so much diverse wild life from monkeys, sloths, coati, ant eaters, tucans, snakes, scorpions, frogs and so much more in one spot was breath taking. |The service and the food at the lodge were impeccable. Carol was a very attentive waitress who our daughter fell in love with immediately due to her kindness. |We highly recommend staying at the El Remanso lodge if you are looking for wildlife, luxury and kindness all combined in one. |Keep up the amazing work El Remanso lodge and thank you for making our stay so memorable.

This is an amazing luxurious eco-resort with included excursions. The guides are fantastic and know so much about the plants and animals. They bring a telescope on the hike-walk so you can see things up close. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The food was good, but not as many options for a picky child as other places (like the pancakes were citrus and coconut and the pasta was aggressively al dente). There are so many animals right around the resort. The local surf lesson was wonderful and long. The jaguar rescue talk is not to be missed. It is so nice to be in a remote, magical part of Costa Rica that is not over developed where animals can thrive. Even though it was the start of rainy season, they had an each day and rain was limited-mainly afternoon or night. Bring Off wipes. They prefer no sprays and there are definitely mosquitoes. They provide hiking boots if you want to use them instead of getting your own shoes all muddy. Transport was great, concierge checks on you every day. The grounds are beautiful. We had an amazing time combining the animal spotting walks with relaxation at this beautiful place. I highly recommend it for those looking for active things to do while based in an aliasing nature setting and feeling pampered. I found it off putting that non alcoholic drinks are not included in the all inclusive, but that is a small complaint. Also not that several of the activities listed require an extra fee. Everyone speaks English well and is happy to speak Spanish if you do. If you are debating, just go!

We really can’t fault this wonderful hotel. I guess the road is a bit bumpy getting there but otherwise it’s perfect. Food is amazing with wonderful choices of cuisine available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The guided walks were great with the guides spotting things we’d never have seen and giving just the right level of information. Of our 4 hotels in Costa Rica this was easily the best for wildlife with amongst other things us seeing 4 types of monkeys, anteaters, coatis, agoutis, macaws, toucans (and more birds than I could ever mention!) snakes and spiders. They have their own marked jungle trails but you even see a lot just sitting by the pool. The 20 minute walk to the beach is worth it for the lagoon and rock pools although leave energy for the 40 minute walk back! Water is available half way! The staff make an effort to learn your names and the duty managers check in with you each night to help with any questions.

Absolutely a must if you ever get the chance. It’s super remote , we drove in, and loved it! The food options for every meal thats included were perfect and held true to local tastes and traditions, they even catered to whatever you asked for, especially in a smoothie! It’s like staying inside the zoo, the rooms don’t have TVs and a there are no sounds of generators or heavy machinery , it’s sublimely quite and peaceful , only the sounds of nature and the ocean fill the air, all of the beautiful wildlife is living all around you. I can’t wait to go back.
