The Definitive Styles of Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Following the tradition of a Mexican-American lonchera, this spot offers an al pastor (regional name adobada) burrito seasoned with guacamole, chopped onions, and cilantro, reflecting the street-food lineage." - Bill Esparza

Google
They didn’t have any vegetarian breakfast burritos on the menu, but were very accommodating and substituted peppers and onions in the hashbrown burrito for the meat. It was gigantic and tasty! The salsas were spicy and flavorful. There’s plenty of seating to eat in. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was playing on their TVs, sooo random but loved the vibe. :p

Google
You have to try "The Hawaiian" Burrito. Pineapple -ham- carne asada and jalapeno and Cheese. I have never had a burrito like this. 100% worth every bit. Every bit you taste the pineapple and all the great flavors. I love it I will be back next time I am in San Diego

Google
Picture does not do justice. Food came in a nice big plate with two chiles rellenos. We shared, so I got the paper plate. The lady in the front was really nice.

Google
I had a long day driving around san diego and needed to stop at the nearest taco spot. The prices were super reasonable for pacific beach area, the food was delicious, and the portions of meat were incredibly generous. Would recommend 1000 times over.

Katina D.

Google
we enjoyed the California fries carbs asada style! oh, yes it was the best. will definitely be reordering!

Caleigh R.

Google
Legit Mexican fare. Super sweet waitress helped us with our order. Prices are "slightly high" for Mexican but not REALLY. Similar to one's we had Gastown, and better. ❤️

Google
First caldo de res soup ive seen for under $30. It’s a smaller portion of course but it’s still perfect. Noticed a ton of pictures of the same guy and google said that he was a general in the Mexican Revolution. A key figure in the revolutionary movement that forced out President Porfirio Díaz and brought Francisco I. Madero to power in 1911. This man goes by the name Francisco "Pancho" Villa. Cheers to the heroes & the doers!

Google
Order birria de chivo great taste. Had a peace of plastic wrap in my dish. Should do bags if they refrigerated the food.

Trent P.

Yelp
Very hearty beef enchiladas and some solid crispy beef tacos although one was a little too fried. Great salsas. Nice atmosphere, will be back!

Yelp
more like a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I suppose, when you call and order and the people who answered the phone couldn't speak English, it'd be a good sign that the food was going to be very good. when i pulled into the parking lot, i was really confused if i was at the right location... apparently the sign was broken and the light wasn't on. Keep in mind, i went at night time, so it was a bit dark. Anyways, i ended up getting carne asada fries, and they were good but i felt like for the price paid, it wasn't worth it. What i did like was that they had prepackage salsa containers for you, so you don't feel guilty asking for more than 1 green sauce.

Yelp
Walking in i felt like I was in safe hands because everything felt authentic so I was excited for the food. I should have know from the taste of the horchata that this wasn't the case. I got the Hash Brown breakfast burrito. Everything about it was very white washed. This place is exactly what you would think a taco shop in PB would taste like. It had actual sausage links in the burrito and the egg was not your traditional scrambled egg. I did ask them to make my tortilla a little crunchy and they did so theres that. I dont eat salsa but I tried them and the red and green were very hot. Maybe im being too harsh because I grew up in the south bay where the best taco shops live but I was in this area and I really wanted a Mexican breakfast burrito. They were very nice but sadly I dont think I'll be coming back.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Came out fast and Hot! The Horchata was so refreshing and light! Very nice and attentive staff who made sure we had everything we needed and were cleaning and helping customers! Big menu with something for everyone

Yelp
This place is delicious! We stopped here for breakfast and got the breakfast machaca- best machaca I've had! Easily split this for two people, the beef was so tender, with their homemade salsa and freshly made corn tortillas, a real feast! Highly recommend this item!!
google avatar

Yelp
Worst Mexican food we have ever had. Pork was full of fat. Wet burrito was like glue. Just AWFUL.
google avatar

Eric W.

Yelp
You are going to have to be ok with a bit of grease to enjoy this place. Assuming that you do, the food is awesome, hits the spot very well and priced reasonably.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
One of the best Tostada's I've ever had and the green salsa was amazing! Doesn't look like much from the parking lot outside but inside the food and service was EXCELLENT!
google avatar

Yelp
Heading back to LA so we wanted a breakfast burrito before we head back. Found this place on Yelp. Was close off the freeway and had good reviews. Perfect stop. Friendly staff. Super cheerful, funny and attentive. Ordered a has brown burrito and machaca burrito. Both were large and generous with their burrito filling. Great flavor in each bite. Freshly made. Filling was nicely proportioned to you get all ingredients in each bite. Large inside, family friendly and a great vibe. Salsa station with prepackaged salsas ready to go so you can grab as you want before you go.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
This is probably better than el gordo in my opinion. They were nice, there is a good spicy sauce and the meat was definitely good and well seasoned! There are areas to eat at the shop or you can just take it to-go. They have a great salsa they offered for us to try and serrano peppers! Nice quiet area and spacious. Just try!
google avatar

Eliseo R.

Yelp
Hoping to find a quick dinner takeout after being out all day, my girlfriend and I stumbled upon this place on maps. We rushed over here and the lady greeted us kindly, informing us that only to-go is accepted since they were closing in 30-40 minutes. The inside is a small restaurant setting with counter chairs overlooking the large windows. It's uniquely decorated and a variety of drink dispensers were on the side of the wall. I ordered a combination burrito with carnitas. The meat was well-cooked and I really liked it as it was pretty juicy. The pico de gallo tasted nice. On the sides the rice was well-made, although the beans were alright in my opinion. The chef was very friendly and reminded us not to forget about the salsas! We thanked him a lot and he wished us a good night very warmly. He and the female cashier was super friendly and kind, despite us coming in their last hour open.

Yelp
This PB neighborhood taco shop was tucked away in a small strip mall off Garnet Ave. The 'Open' sign was still on when I arrived, but clearly they were getting ready to close for the night. Luckily, the kitchen kindly accepted my take-out order. The menu board was large and wrapped around two walls above the service counter and beverage station. I wanted a couple of items and settled for a fish taco and a set of beef rolled tacos. The fish fillet was fried but was pretty large. The taste was okay, nothing special. The five rolled tacos were buried beneath a heap of shredded cheddar cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes. They were on par with what you can get at any taco joint in town. Overall, El Rey Moro Taco Shop was a three star experience for price, quality, and serving size as expected.
google avatar

Laura A.

Yelp
Clean and fast. They split the burrito without us asking. Salsa was amazing. Styrofoam and plastic containers for salsa. Chips ok.
google avatar

Amy A.

Yelp
Amazing food !!!!!! Shrimp quesadilla was okay but the Ques birria was delicious, the mini tacos were the best as well as the churros. Overall would highly recommended!!
google avatar

Bread L.

Yelp
Used to be great! New cook can't melt cheese on a bean and cheese burrito (three times, all three raw shredded/cheap cheese unmelted) AND COLD AS*S BEANS. Come on dude.

Andre L.

Yelp
Great location, fast service and the food great as well the establishment was clean. The staff was nice and friendly

Cinthia S.

Yelp
Service was disappointed very disrespectful. My mom order tacos, every time she orders tacos De tripa she asked them to be do a specific way when she orders them turns out they didn't do it the way she order it. which she is very understandable and she told him them it was fine but the rude thing was the cook came out and rudely told her what am I going to do now. Which my mom told him it's okay to not worry about it. But the way that man approached my mother was unacceptable. He was telling her why didn't she said it since the beginning that he couldn't do a new batch. Which they told him she did order since the beginning. There's always a way to say things especially to an older woman.
google avatar

Sergio D.

Yelp
Best tacos in town! El Rey Moro's carnitas, carne asada, and homemade tortillas are a must. Friendly service, great prices, and delicious flavors. My new favorite spot!
google avatar

High-End D.

Yelp
Do not walk in or call in order. GRUBHUB seems to be the least expensive way to enjoy your meal here. The food and portion size was appreciated, not mad at all. Just when I called in an order I was charged close to $8 more than using GH ( no discounts applied). I found it strange to pay more by going direct. I ended wasting an additional 10 mins arguing with the woman behind the counter because she refused to cancel my phone order and accept my GH order. The meal was cold once I got back to my car. Just a strange and frustrating first experience, all due to owners not properly updating menu price items

Edwin Z.

Yelp
I stopping by at the El Rey moro and Karla she recommended octopus ala diabla and was amazing this is my third time at this pleace but the pulpo ala diabla wow was very yummy yummy Venancio is the chef 4 this place this guy he know how cook he's recipes is amazing if still you don't have the opportunity 2 go this place highly recommended I'm promise you don't will be regretted and you will be coming back 4 more like me
google avatar

Kristie L.

Yelp
My favorite breakfast burritos in all of PB. Can't go wrong with the El Kaz or the Hashbrown but I always order and eat both. Both are hefty and there's always leftovers. The chilaquiles are bomb too. Red or green sauce but I have a slight preference for the green.
google avatar

R I.

Yelp
These street tacos were bomb. Meat quality was good but the salsa was the best part, super spicy and I liked it a lot. Seating area is super spacious and clean. Nice decorations inside and the food was made quickly, definitely coming back again.
google avatar

Brad W.

Yelp
Very Authentic. Right down to the stale chips. I come here for a breakfast burrito every time I get my vehicle serviced. The 'Buenos Diaz' is pretty good. DO NOT bother tipping as it's just counter service and service your self drinks.

Carlos U.

Yelp
Meat was over cooked and tortillas could be better Service was good Ambiance was good

Yelp
PB Surf and Turf ~ $15.00 Tortilla + Beans + Guap + Carne Asada + Shrimp + Tarter Sause

Angela K.

Yelp
There is ample parking which in that area is nice. Yelp amenities says there are many vegetarian options. When I went in there were zero vegetarian items. Even the vegetarian burrito has two sources of lard (beans and tortillas.) I know that is not relevant for most but it is for myself and I am glad I asked and didn't assume information was correct. I believe my friend was satisfied with her meal.
google avatar

Hasti R.

Yelp
The lady at the counter was agitated upon arrival. I chose a torta and kindly asked for a blop of sour cream for n the side. This was $1.50 apparently. I asked her if this was indeed correct, she responded "Yes" with pissed off attitude. Before diving into the second half of my torta I walked up to the counter and politely asked for more sour cream. She just looked at me w a FU face and said "$1.50". First and last time at this establishment. Edit: she finished off the experience by smoking her cigarette in downstream wind one table away from where I was eating
google avatar

Andrea C.

Yelp
Great tacos. Had their 3-mini tacos, the portion was definitely NOT mini. BF got a torta and shreddd chicken quesadilla for our daughter. All the food was super tasty and their homemade salsas are fire !!

Ron J.

Yelp
Greasy, over salted, nor real authentic Mexican food. The tostadas tasted stale. My burrito was more beans than anything else. They put a lot of this horrible yellow cheese on everything. They shouldn't advertise as a real Mexican restaurant. I'm giving them 2 stars because the service was ok.
google avatar

Heidi S.

Yelp
Best surf and turf burrito and so big I had it for dinner and lunch. Next time we're in Pacific Beach, I'm going to try their tacos. Churro was just sweet enough, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Tasty.
google avatar

Kaitlyn C.

Yelp
Horrible customer service, If I could give it zero stars I would. I work for YARD HOUSE, I would sincerely lose my job if I spoke to someone the way the gentleman who answered the phone at 7:45. It does NOT matter if you close at 8, a paying customer is still allowed to order until doors closed where I am from. Your verbiage with customers should always be welcoming. I have to stay up with customers until 12:30 am and if I ever had the energy that person displayed I would lose my job that day. You asked me "anything else" with an insensitive attitude before I would finish my sentences and I was fine until you continually cut me off. it might have thrown you off that I said I will tell you when IM finished and you may feel justified to tell a manger that "I was the one in the wrong" but you got an attitude back after you as a worker dished it. Not only that! you also didn't repeat my order back to me, ask me my name or phone number OR give me a total, you hung up instantly upset because you had to cook one little meal for my family. This is not a welcoming business, stay away.

Valerie R.

Yelp
Ordered carne asada plate and didn't realize it was ranchero style... usually the red sauce is a fine addition, but they served me ranchero soup with some carne asada floating in it. Worst food presentation I've seen at a taqueria. Sauce and meat were lacking in flavor. Go to Santana's down the street for an edible option.
google avatar

Eleanor E.

Yelp
what a surprise this was! I ordered delivery, it came on time and the order was perfect! The surprise was the tastiest enchiladas I have eaten. They were beef made with succulent shredded beef, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. The hot sauce also great! i would recommend this for some interesting twist on Mexican food! Amazing!!!
google avatar

Ed F.

Yelp
shut the door. tell everyone. this place has one of the best carne asada burritos that i ever had. period. the flour tortilla was fresh and crisp. the beef was juicy and flavorful, nice guacamole, the pico was outstanding. it was very very very good. can't wait to try the other items

Behzad A.

Yelp
Never mind the sarcastic comments made by snobs The people and food served here are wholesome they have the best surf and turf burrito in town See it for yourself
google avatar

Jamie D.

Yelp
Been going to this place for over a decade and it is still the absolute best burrito spot in San Diego. Don't listen to the negative reviews .. those are just entitled, coddled, and spoiled millennial pussies who wouldn't know good food unless they saw it on TikTok.
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Going to round down from 2.5. It was our first time here and I was pretty disappointed. We got the fish burrito and it was almost all cabbage. The actual fish was ok but having every other bite be only tortillas and cabbage really ruined the enjoyment. Price was slightly cheaper than nearby competitors we frequent (vallartas and cotixan), but their fish burrito is MUCH better. I've been to the one in Clairemont Mesa and felt like carne asada burrito there was just ok. Salsa was good, but hard to beat the orange sauces at vallartas and cotixan. We may try the shrimp and carne asada here one more time and review again. Hopefully it changes my mind.

Yelp
Zero stars & I didn't even eat here!! Pulled up to grab a few things from the liquor store next door (lovely owners) .. as I'm walking out getting into my car I kicked a glass bottle. A glass Mexican soda bottle.. clearly from the restaurant in front of me... I literally think nothing of it besides.. ooo I don't want to run that over.. so I pick it up & walk it to the front of the restaurant.. no trash cans.. so I left it on the patio tables they had out front.. its 9pm in pb, I have my dog in the car... I wasn't going to be wondering around the parking lot to look for a trash.. I get back in the car, getting things situated... A male cook storms out of the restaurant yelling at me that I left the bottle there & that he SEEN ME LEAVE IT.. I say out my window "it's not mine.. I didn't want to run it over.." he replies "I SEEN YOU!!!" & he walks back inside throwing an actual fit... he doesn't even take the glass bottle?! So I get out of my car, grab the damn bottle, walk into the place and throw it away.. as I'm tossing it I muttered to the cashier "do you recognize me.. I didn't even eat here.." the guy comes from the back to yell at me on my way out & puts up the middle finger... I just left.. confused on the situation I just got myself in grabbing drinks from the store over & yelled at for littering.. To the owners of this place... It was completely dead at 8:30 on a Friday night.. the bottle was clearly from your restaurant.. And if you head into the parking lot of you will find other cans of soda & what not from your establishment.. I will tell you one thing, as someone in hospitality.. I'd never assume.. especially of someone you THOUGHT.. spent money with you.. it wasn't like you had a massive wave of customers. I was the only one in the parking lot.. just me, a female in the middle of a dark parking lot getting screamed at for trying to trash a bottle from YOUR restaurant that I didn't want to bust my tire. Put trash cans outside your restaurant & talk to your staff about hostility.. so this doesn't happen again bcus wtf

Yelp
Brought my sister to this fabulous Mexican restaurant! She wanted to try some very authentic food, so my husband who is Mexican picked this place out. It really was a great choice because there were lots of options on the menu, including menudo, lengua, tripa, and other delicacies that American "Mexican" places just don't offer. It was fun to explain the different dishes to her. My husband LOVES menudo, so he was super happy to try it here. He said it was great! I enjoyed a torta de milanesa! Also the staff were friendly!

Suzanne W.

Yelp
Stale chips, stale taco shells. Taco had hard, over cooked chicken mixed in with regular chicken. Beans were good. The dining area was very stuffy. No air movement.
google avatar

Malia P.

Yelp
I was in the area and needed breakfast. My options were McDonald's or ERMTS. The choice was easy I ordered machaca con huevos, my first time hearing it and eating it. It was delicious and well worth the $11. The scramble came with eggs, rice, hot tortillas, and tortilla chips. This monster of a breakfast is enough food for the whole day. The cashier was very nice. Due to covid times: no indoor seating, hand sanitizer provided, and salsas are in tiny to go containers. I do feel strange watching very first people walking around the gym that shares the parking lot while I was inhaling food.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
This is my go-to spot in PB! Great traditional Mexican food. Burritos are always large with perfect proportions and the inside is always clean with friendly, efficient staff.
google avatar

Sanam A.

Yelp
The food here is decent but not always consistent. One day I'll get an awesome breakfast burrito with crispy bacon, crispy hash browns and just enough cheese and served while hot and the next time it'll be a huge chewy clump of bacon and kind of dry overall with over cooked eggs and just warmish. So hence the 3 stars. Depending on the day its a 4 or a 2. Huevos Rancheros just taste like eggs swimming in bottled ranchero sauce but the balance of the elements is definitely off. Chilaquiles were ok but kind of soggy and too spicy. Overall just okay for a quick stop but wouldn't be my go to.

Immanuel J.

Yelp
Some of the best tripa and birria tacos I've had in San Diego! Hole in the wall spot that's packed with flavor. My new go-to spot after the beach.
google avatar

Zachary S.

Yelp
Very rarely do I go to a new Hispanic food restaurant and find my favorite Cali surf burrito!! Epic presented plate that reminds me of my hometown El Centro, and not a hint of American-ized food!!! Thank you Jesus for this place!! Definitely will be back often!!
google avatar

Harry A.

Yelp
Always delicious no matter what you order. I have been visiting El Rey Moro for over 12 years.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
Horrible. Raw, cold, viened shrimp. Tweaker staff. Don't. Used to be AMAZING! Will never go back.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
I typically like this place. But hair isn't ever something I put in my salsa. Hate it when something like this happens because it makes me wonder if I need to start asking more questions about their food sanitation. I'll be back but things like this linger on the mind
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
Been to both locations and they both have the best breakfast burritos in the US. Thanks for great good for so many years!
