Texadelphia’s Two-Story Katy Location Opens This Week | Eater Houston

"Documents filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation indicate plans for a new El Rey Taqueria at 23230 Western Centre Drive in Katy; it would be the fourth area location for El Rey Taqueria, which is known for its Cuban- and Mexican-influenced eats served during breakfast, lunch, and dinner. No opening date has been announced, though construction was expected to be completed by August 2020." - Amy McCarthy

We just went here for dinner. The person working the window was friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, it took about 20 minutes for 4 tacos, a side of rice, and a plain quesadilla, and much of the order was wrong or didn’t taste right. Cuban vegan taco had beans and avocado, but no plaintains. Salmon taco was ordered without the cilantro sauce (it contains dairy, which I can’t eat), yet was covered in cilantro sauce. My husband’s shrimp tacos tasted off (like not fresh shrimp), so he couldn’t eat his. The only items that came out okay were the quesadilla and Mexican rice. Nearly $40 later….

Tried El Rey Cuban & Mexican Cuisine and really enjoyed it! The Cuban sandwich was flavorful and perfectly made. The charro beans were the highlight—absolutely amazing. Everything else I ordered was good too, and the service was friendly. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more dishes.

Every visit to El Rey is an exceptional experience. The establishment is always spotless, the food is consistently fresh, and the customer service goes above and beyond. From the moment you walk in, you're treated like more than just a customer — you're treated like family. The staff is not only friendly but also informative. They always make sure to let you know about current deals and promotions. For instance, I found out coffee is free on weekends for dine-in customers — a great surprise! On another occasion, I was told breakfast was extended until 1 PM, which was perfect timing for my late start. One of the standout reasons I keep coming back is the manager, Fabian. He’s always smiling, approachable, and quick to handle any concerns or questions with professionalism and genuine care. But what really sealed my loyalty to this location happened one weekend when my car stalled right in their driveway. Without hesitation, Fabian remained calm, reassured me, and asked two of his staff members, Erick and Kalub, to help. They didn’t just try once — they stayed with me, kept trying to jump my car until my husband arrived, and refused to take a tip because, as they said, “You’re a regular customer.” That level of kindness and service is rare. I've visited other El Rey locations, but none compare to this one. El Rey is more than food — it’s community, care, and consistency. Highly recommend!

Went here with some friends and it was a tossup with the food. My burrito was really good but the shrimp tacos weren't. The shrimp had a dirty taste. They appeared to be cleaned, but the taste was definitely off.

Google
My family and I eat here about every week. It’s been consistently one of our favorite spots in Katy for several years. From tortas, to nachos, or even breakfast burritos, I haven’t had anything that I don’t like. And while you might not think to go to a Cuban place for coffee, the espresso is great, I usually get it iced with mocha.

Google
Great food and service !! It is hard to choose between all delicious options.. best cilantro sauce in town … and finish with a tres leches or a coffee , for me a capuchino with cinnamon on top !

Google
This is now the fourth time El Rey Taqueria has messed up my order, and at this point it honestly feels intentional. My order couldn’t be simpler — a bacon and egg taco, well-done eggs. Yet every single time, they find a way to mess it up. I waited 10–15 minutes in the drive-thru for what I assumed would be a properly cooked taco. I open the bag, and there’s no bacon, and the eggs are watery instead of well done. This has happened repeatedly. I always call, they either refund me or remake the order but it keeps happening. This last time I spoke with a manager named Francisco, who didn’t seem to care at all. No apology, no concern just issued me a partial refund for a messed-up order. Horrible experience from start to finish. At this point, it’s clear they don’t care about their customers or quality control.

Google
El Rey service is amazing! Food is always fresh and this staff is always very friendly when we visit! Recommend anyone in the Katy area to come here if you want authentic Cuban food!

Yelp
Always wanted to try this place and finally did at lunch. We had the tacos and burrito within queso and chips. The service was the best part of our dining experience. The ambiance was dead nothing quite just a place to eat. The burrito was good with beef fajita and the queso was lukewarm warm at best and we were dining in!

Yelp
Very fresh food. Customer service is good but has holes in it if you are ordering inside. Drive through is more important to them but I've seen this elsewhere. Had a rotisserie chicken Gordita. Very good, fresh, though not a lot of flavour or wow that was good. I had take out and added banana ketchup (yes, banana ketchup, try it...it's amazing) to give gordita some level of non blandness. Tortilla soup here is to die for though with fresh everything and avocados. I tried one of their burritos before...it was huge, though again... no flavour, no spices, not even salt and pepper. Great food, great people, and great fresh food. Bring your spice cabinet with you as too bland their food. Nice place for family or to relax.

Yelp
Certainly an excellent value. Food is excellent. Sauces rock! Cuban Sandwich is a big hit as are the 3 Amigos STreet Tacos. They lost 2 stars because their drive-through ordering system is terrible! Could not hear or understand the ordering taker. Heartily recommend they fix this.

Yelp
My order of beef Cuban and salmon taco all on flour tortillas ended with 2 weird tacos on corn (I have corn allergies) there was no beef or salmon in either of the tacos. Only onions, avocado, mushroom and cilantro. WTH some vegetarian got my protein and I got some veg taco:(
google avatar

Lee S.

Yelp
Had breakfast with friends here and their breakfast tacos are amazing. I had the rotisserie chicken tacos and loved them. Great flavor withe the chicken.
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
I love the rotisserie chicken and grilled veggies to be sure, but this was off set by the service. Those at the counter were more concerned about their phones than taking our orders. We could not communicate with the person serving our dish without pointing to what we needed and even then did not get what we needed without going to the counter. Service aside the food was good!
google avatar

Yelp
Gosh this place is soooooo good. The inside seating area was empty, except for one party of 4. But the drive thru line seems very busy. Which makes me happy bc this place is amazing. We got fajitas, which were really good. Fresh, hot, flavorful chicken and tender beef. The tortilla soup is my favorite. Hubby got the rotisserie chicken enchiladas. Hubby liked them a lot. The lemonade is by far the freshest place tasting lemonade I've ever had. I wish they sold it by the gallon. And the cantaloupe juice is the bestest! Also, as a side note, the kitchen is immaculate clea

Yelp
KATY, TX / CUBAN & MEXICAN / 04-02-22 / TAKEOUT LUNCH +The Havana Plate was delicious. It had a nice balance of stewed pork, vegetables, black beans, and rice. +The tacos were loaded up with meat. You can get traditional corn tortillas, flour, etc. +The kids enjoyed the chicken quesadilla. +They only serve 32 oz. drinks, so you don't have to think about what size drink cup you want. +Drive-thru available. -Wish there were some spicier sauces. The red and green sauces were okay, but not enough kick to it.

Jordan M.

Yelp
Had breakfast there the other day. I don't know about you guys but I love when they roll a burrito so that 5 different fillings inside are all separate inside the tortilla. I wouldn't want to have everything mixed up together so that I'm getting eggs, bacon, cheese, etc., all in one bite. I want to eat the eggs separately, then the bacon, then the potatoes.... You get the idea.
google avatar

Trl M.

Yelp
We eat here frequently and have always enjoyed it. The service is quick and friendly. I recommend the ropas plate and also their breakfast burritos.

Karen M.

Yelp
We used to come here a lot. We would get fish tacos and the chicken tortilla soup. Unfortunately, the quality has gone down. The red salsa has changed...too hot to even swallow. I spoke to the manager, and he said they might have been heavy handed on the jalapeños. The fish tacos I just had on corn tortillas were inedible. The tortillas were hard. The chicken tortilla soup hardly had any chicken in it. They have lost some regular customers.
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Love the Double Mochas and the Double Iced Mocha. I love their grilled chicken salad, it's my favorite. Everyone is always nice and kind. The restaurant is always clean. One of my favorite restaurants.
google avatar

Steve T.

Yelp
Second time here and it was worse than the first time. I had the fajita beef burrito that besides having little meat actually had chicken in it. Guacamole, sour cream and cheese were nearly non existent. In fact, the whole burrito was filled with rice and not much else. My wife had the tortilla soup and said it was good. Her grilled chicken was okay. Another of our party had a chicken bowl and said the chicken did not appear to be cooked. Someone else had grilled chicken and said it appeared to be under cooked. With so many other places to eat I won't be back.

Yelp
It's just not the same as i remember. maybe the other locations have better food, everytime i've been to the katy location it's just not that great

Yelp
Me quieren matar o mandar al hospital o que? you guys want to kill me or send me to the hospital? serving me raw chicken in my salad!

Yelp
For the love of this Flavor!! I have been eating El Rey since I was a freshman in college 15 years ago I would stop by every morning for breakfast tacos downtown, they served them out of this little window. Was always My favorite part of the day here we are 15 years later and still loving every time I have an opportunity to stop by or see we treat El Rey quite similar to Buckys. You have to stop. My go to is always the Havana plate that flavor and mix with the onion and sautéed with black beans mmmm mouth watering. Their location are always immaculate and food is always fresh and hot! And served quickly. Enjoy!
google avatar

TYanna M.

Yelp
This food amazed me ! It was amazing , everything was well seasoned. The juices were great. Reminds you of a real good taco truck almost , but to have this quality of food at a chain restaurant is very impressive!
google avatar

Marlen D.

Yelp
We love coming to this location because the food is delicious but lately we noticed that the tortillas are not fully cooked. Maybe because we're ordering drive thru and they are in a hurry but today it was really raw it got stuck to the paper it's packed in. To many times is enough for me to think twice about going back to this location.

Fred M.

Yelp
El Rey is awesome! The grilled chicken salad is the best in Katy. They have 10-12 different types of tacos which are all very good. Highly recommend eating here.
google avatar

Lois D.

Yelp
EXCELLENT!! Delicious. Really good portion sizes. Fresh food. Great service. Very clean. Love this restaurant!. Good to know they serve breakfast too! YUM!!!

Yelp
My husband and I ordered online to skip the lunch rush (especially after reading the reviews about the drive thru line being a long wait). We ordered the fish taco and the shrimp (summer version with the avocado), the chx rotisserie torta, and the fajita meat plate. The tacos were delicious and we're great for the price. I ordered them on flour tortilla and they were stuffed with fillings. The meat plate came with refried beans and rice, both cooked really nice and we'll seasoned, but the meat was very thinly sliced and not a lot in the plate itself. It was mostly onions and such versus meat. He said it was still very good, but, if that was all he had ordered, he'd be hungry still. When we went to pick up, we ended up picking up from the drive thru line since we came in from the back of the restaurant and did not see the.online order/curbside pick up parking spots at the front of the store (facing the freeway). The line moved fairly well with three cars in front of us and did not seem like a long wait, but maybe we were lucky? I would love to try more menu options, especially their breakfast tacos, and can't wait to go back soon!

Yelp
This was one of my favorite spots when I lived in Montrose and I'm super glad to see one opened up in Katy! Honestly, all I know about is the breakfast taco situation. I'm told they have a lunch menu too but I can't tell you anything about it - this is a go-to-breakfast-taco-spot in my household. This morning I got an egg and potato (+ bacon because duh) breakfast taco on a flour tortilla. The kind gentleman at the register suggested I include refried beans, which I was all about. It was a good decision, I assure you. I love their hot sauces - they're the perfect compliment to the breakfast tacos and, I'd guess, also a wonderful accompaniment to any of their other dishes. The dining area is also pretty rad - we loved looking around at all the decor from our seat at the [very long] bar while we watched a soccer match on one of their giant TV's. They also have an impressive coffee selection. I have El Rey's Cafe Cubano to thank for my unusually productive Saturday afternoon. Double-win!

Jesus M.

Yelp
The food was good, only need a little more seasoning (rice & beans), the place is very nice and good atmosphere, but the prices are very high $$$$. Very expensive when this is a fast food, not a restaurant with waiters and real plates and silverware! Good but expensive!
google avatar

Shannon B.

Yelp
We went through the drive thru on the morning of Christmas Eve. $2.99 each for breakfast tacos is a little on the high side, but they were great. We ordered corn tortillas, and they were freshly made. They asked if we wanted beans spread on the tacos (like a condiment) ... yes, please! We would come back for sure.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
Taco Tuesday! Three tacos of any variety for $8.50. Our party of three ordered grilled fish, grilled shrimps, Cuban, el pastor, and ropa vieja tacos. We also ordered the El Rey ceviche to share. All the tacos were seasoned perfectly and tasted yummy. The ceviche wasn't the traditional Tex-Mex version, more of a fish ceviche salad with lots of veggies. However the fish slices were fresh and not mushy. It was very refreshing especially with the diced mango and extra lime juice. Counter service was friendly and quick. All the employees were properly masked. We will definitely return our taco Tuesdsy.

Yelp
when i come through the drive thru the girl in glasses is always taking my order with patience and generosity. i truly appreciate how patient and clear she is when taking my order, makes ordering so much easier! the rice, beans, and chicken are always bland, there is no seasoning. the chicken is always dry, the rice is very grainy and old. i used to love coming just to get the fresh waters, but now that the prices have increased significantly it's completely outrageous. recently i ordered a large cantaloupe and OMG! it was hot, mucky, and spoiled! you could smell the rotten aroma as soon as you opened it! one day while ordering through drive thru there was old man in the kitchen in casual clothes with no appropriate attire (hair net, gloves, etc.) standing over the food. this is completely unhygienic. i am truly dissatisfied with everything related to this restaurant.

Chay M.

Yelp
The food is normally good. Today I tried the shrimp tacos and the shrimp were not cleaned. Def disappointed to pay so much money for food and it's not prepared correctly.

Laura B.

Yelp
Love me some El Rey! But this place the food tasted like "I don't care" food. The chicken was seasoned well as usual. The black beans were cooked well and soft but lacked flavor Including salt, They were bland. The white rice which is usually my favorite bc it's seasoned so well at most El Rey places was dry and bland no salt flavoring and it showed. Y'all need help, like a real cook with passion for food in that place!! It was a turn off.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
I was very excited to see that they built one in Katy! I would travel to memorial area just to pickup food. I was sadly unimpressed, the beans were old and chemical tasting ( I felt bad even trying to return anything ) the rice was cold and flavorless.. Hopefully they put more love into the food, compare it the other location if you get the chance!

Allison P.

Yelp
After clarifying 3 times that we wanted corn tortillas (the only tortillas I can have because I am celiac) ,we get home and realized that they gave me flour. Grilled chicken salad was very good though.
google avatar

Erika H.

Yelp
This is a Cuban??? The cheese is not even melted and the meat is just deli meats. Cold. For $8.50+ tax this is so not worth it. I could've toasted bread and slapped meat , Swiss, and a few pickles together myself. Had to douse in hot salsa for flavor won't be back.
google avatar

Gio P.

Yelp
Great food, the tacos were well portioned and taste was on point. The addition of the beans and rice were good, the restaurant was super clean. All the staff were friendly. Only complain was cost of food.
google avatar

Guerra N.

Yelp
First time. Ordered the ropa Vieja. The meat was pretty good, but have to work on the flavoring. The rice was bland and cold. The black beans were quite good. All in all , a mixed bag. Was it worth the price? No. This is definitely on par with a taco cabana for Cuban food. If I want more authentic tic Cuban food, I go elsewhere.
google avatar

Jennifer E.

Yelp
Yummy juevos rancheros! The fresh squeezed orange juice is so good too and the staff are always very friendly. I'm so happy they've opened a location out here in Katy
google avatar

Dani G.

Yelp
The overcharge you for everything plus their food it's not even that good, their owner if this place it's so arrogant and treats his employees so poorly, never coming back, such a sad experience.
google avatar

Heather T.

Yelp
I love El Ray but the staff at this one ..not so much! Very rude and attitudes as though your bothering them by ordering. I may just stick to the one off I-10.
google avatar

Adrian H.

Yelp
Best taco salad great service not a long wait .The food is packaged and well presented.Very clean and the staff was pleasant as I was waiting the general manager came by to make sure I was taken care. I was I would highly recommend coming here great atmosphere great service and Great quality food
google avatar

Caleb B.

Yelp
Have tried a variety of dishes on the menu and haven't been disappointed yet. From ropa vieja to tortas to breakfast tacos, El Rey does it right. Very clean inside and drive through is always reasonably quick. Be sure to try anything with plantains and order the green sauce.
google avatar

Thomas B.

Yelp
I don't do bad reviews very often but sometimes some thing is so, not bad, but sad, that you have to say something in hopes that you'll save somebody a disappointing experience. I did not try this establishments Mexican food I went there for there Cuban cuisine. If that's what you're looking for this is not the place you want to go. Then again there are McDonald's people and then there's gourmet burger people so everyone's different. The food was poorly prepared, the Cubano sandwich was made with cold cuts only no fresh pork, and the atmosphere in the place is one step below a fast food restaurant with no table service. Not sure whose idea this was but would definitely rethink it.

Bernard C.

Yelp
The menu is extensive, the food is excellent, and the restaurant is clean and well kept. Any choice you make will not disappoint.
google avatar

Kayla D.

Yelp
Just became one of my favorite places to eat! The food was so fresh and delicious. Been awhile since I've been to a restaurant that wasn't too salty or greasy. Great menu too, can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
We love this place! I don't understand the negative reviews. Maybe they just aren't ordering the right thing. The Ropa Vieja and Special Ropa Vieja tacos are AMAZING!!! I have also tried the Cuban sandwich, the tortilla soup, and the grilled chicken sandwich...all sooo good!
google avatar

Valery V.

Yelp
Food is amazing but they don't listen when taking the order!? They put cheese on my shrimp tacos and I asked for more salsa verde and they only have me one.
google avatar

Sonny R.

Yelp
Took my daughter there a for cheese nachos and cheese quesadillas....there is no option for cheese nachos so you have to buy regular nachos (Beef or Chicken Fajitas topped with Refried Beans, Guacamole, Sour Cream & Queso on Tortilla Chips) for $12.99 and they take $1 off for no meat also no option for cheese quesadilla so you have to pay $9.99 for regular quesadillas (Beef, Chicken, Shrimp, or Ropa Vieja, Pico De Gallo, Lettuce, Guacamole & Sour Cream) and get $1 off for no meat. TOTAL RIP OFF.....
google avatar

Paul V.

Yelp
First time trying it. After a quick Costco trip, I stopped for a breakfast taco. The drive through process was ok, a bit slow as there are lots of optionalities - type of tortilla, beans or not, type of hot salsa, etc. I choose an egg, fajita meat and bean breakfast taco on a flour tortilla with red salsa. The taco was well stuffed and more folded than roll, hence was quite messy (but in a good way). The fajita meat was cut into 1/2" cubes, lean and ok (light marinade). In all a very good taco, and at $3 well priced. I need to return and try more of the menu..

Carlos B.

Yelp
I went there and I bought 5 Beef fajita tacos and I just got tomato's and lettuces I do not recommend this place at all.
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
Got the big chicken burrito. Mostly rice an beans. Up to this point good and balanced. At $11 could of had sit down at any restaurant with more than rice and beans.
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
My husband and I recently moved to the area from the Heights and we were so happy to see El Rey! Very clean and largest location we've been to. Food is the same delicious food we're used to. My favorite is the chicken tortilla soup! Now that we know it's here, we will be back.
google avatar

Adela S.

Yelp
Got a few tortas. The chicken inside I think is the frozen chicken fajita you buy from a bag at the grocery store. Absolutely no taste so bland. I do not recommend. There are much better places to spend your money on food.
