"El Rio is hands down one of the most amazing spots in San Francisco. First opened in 1978 as a leather Brazilian gay bar, they have carried the spirit of rowdy inclusion ever since. With an enormous back yard, the drinks are cheap and plentiful. On weekend nights, have your ears obliterated by punk bands in the tiny back room. On weekdays, catch groups of friends skipping work, coworkers relaxing post-work, and neighborhood old timers in their 60s and 70s chatting it up with other locals. In the summer, afternoons are filled with strong margaritas in the yard with lively DJs spinning salsa. Enjoy yourself, but remember to be nice, Carmen is always watching." - Strohl
"El Rio in Bernal Heights has been a staple of SF’s queer community since 1978, thanks in part to its giant back patio and outdoor day parties. The events draw in crowds from around the bay and the strong drinks keep the parties going all day. Make sure to check the calendar regularly. And who knows, after a few hours of dancing, you might find a special someone—this is one of the best bars to meet people in the city, after all." - julia chen 1, patrick wong, lani conway, ricky rodriguez
"This queer dive in Mission-Bernal Heights is a haven for themed parties, drag shows, and live music. But come here for those oh-so-good day and night dance sessions on their massive patio, when a DJ is spinning tracks at just the right BPM. Some of our favorite themed events and groups include Los Train Wreck, Family Not a Group, and RnB & Ribs—all perfect for having a great DFMO (dance floor make out) to reggaeton, electronic, and R&B." - ricky rodriguez
"This iconic Bernal Heights bar is always throwing events. Maybe it's a DJ-and-chef combo day party for moshing and noshing, queer mingling nights, and even group political discussions. Whether you’re here looking to flirt, two-step, or wear something you look good in, all you need to do is check El Rio’s event calendar. With an elevated stage right in the middle of their crowded patio, no matter which day you arrive, there's always an opportunity to make your presence known. Anything from a Patagonia fleece to a cropped tank or a Party City wig Extroverts who like a cheap drink outside" - julia chen 1, patrick wong
"At this point it’s well-documented that we fully endorse El Rio for almost any situation. Depending on the day, it can be great for either a casual drink while shooting pool or body shots with strangers. On the best days, both things happen." - will kamensky, nic strain 2
