The Best Drive-Thru Taco Shops in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Great California burritos and fresh rolled tacos keep College Area folks coming back to this family-owned taco shop. The sweet horchata is a perfect way to wash down your meal, and sure to ease the heat of El Rodeo’s hottest salsa." - Mario A. Cortez

We ordered one of my favorites, Caldo de Rez and it was not good. The meat was tender but the broth was not flavorful and potatos were not cooked. I called them to return and swap for a chicken burrito (my partner's burrito was good) but they hung up the phone on me. The woman who took our order initally was very kind.. but I will not be coming back.

Matthew Rodriguez

Google
Family from Morelos Mexico. So kind and nice. Food is super hot and tasty. Bet soups I’ve ever had at a toco shop. Highly recommend albóndigas and caldo de res. Truly a hidden gem in SD for Mexican food.

Herb Jay

Google
The lady and man are pretty rude and will make up a price to charge you if you aren't Mexican, takes them 30 minutes to make a single burrito as well (literal slop posing as a California burrito) They deleted my last review and I gave them another chance and everything still was terrible. Just take your business to Chuy's or Penelope's or the place across from Ralph's. They're friendly and don't make up prices. 🤣🤣

Google
This place is the bomb the store looks like its closed, but definitely not, the people there are very nice easy to talk to. I have never had a bad bite of anything here. Carne asada is always juicy. Good potions

Google
Food is fine if you are in a rush or what not. Have gotten food there at least 3 times. Nachos were stale an unappealing. OK, but nothing better than what you can cook at home.

Eli Diaz

Google
Food was okay but too expensive for what we got. Our burrito had very little meat inside

Ryan Mizuno

Google
The food was awful, the owners were fairly nice but definitely charged more since I don’t speak Spanish. Go anywhere else but here.

Came here 2 nights ago around 9pm. The lady that helped us was very nice and so was the man (the cook). We had just moved to the area and were so hungry from moving that we decided to walk and came upon this place. Service: there was a language barrier but I got my Spanish on and despite the time the older lady was just so nice and sweet to us. The older gentleman (cook) was so friendly as well. Food: beyond amazed. It was mexican home cooking! The flavor of the Carne asada, the guacamole and salsas were delish! I was so impressed. I got a homestyle cooking with tasty flavor and quality I was in awe. Atmosphere: quaint outdoor seating. It looks like a little house with a gate around the front with a fast food flare. They also have a drive thru and plenty of parking in the back. My thoughts: I highly recommend this little spot. It's quite the gem! I am new to this area and I have tried tons and tons of mexican food places because tacos are my 3rd favorite food.... and this place is my new go to spot! Our order: Carne asada burrito = yum 5 stars ... my husband thinks the tortillas are homemade. We didn't ask. Carne asada tacos: = extra yum 5 stars. Has their own homemade guacamole. Just try it! We will be back!! I will try to update with pics when I go during the day. Til then.

Yelp
Our go-to burrito spot. Nice family-owned business with yummy burritos! Definitely recommend

Yelp
Food quality is low. Maybe having a bad day. There are plenty of other Mexican places around to spend your money on. Don't waste your money on below average food

Yelp
I've been frequenting this location for years,my family and I feel 5 stars is an understatement because that's how much we support their delicious food. I highly recommend visiting El Rodeo . Philly Burritos, Steak,Chicken as well are EXTREMELY DELICIOUS... V.L.SWAIN...THANKS ALCIA...GREAT SERVICE,LIKE NO OTHER... HAPPY HISPANIC MOTHER'S DAY ALSO...5/10/2022.

Yelp
It was Thanksgiving morning and before stuffing my fat face/mouth with Turkey and Wild Turkey I needed to pre-stuff my fat face/mouth with a bean, rice, and cheese burrito. While it's not my typical order I do get the occasional urge for this particular combination. My go-to spots were closed so it was time to try a new (to me) joint and El Rodeo happened to be open with a drive-thru - score. While the dude in front of me took forever it assured that my simple order was ready once I hit the window. I was given extra sauce without hesitation and once the modestly sized burrito revealed itself in the comforts of my home I saw that it had been lightly kissed on the hot flattop, which is a move I always appreciate. Not a bad burrito! Not the best either but points are earned in my book for serving while the others are sleeping. Nice job, El Rodeo!

Yelp
I don't usually leave bad reviews and idk if they were just having a bad day, but based on my experience, this is hands down one of the worst taco shops in San Diego. I ordered a chimichanga and a horchata. The chimichanga was soggy... my drink had marker ink all in it... I grew up in San Diego, and I've tried taco shops from San ysidro all the way to Orange County... this gotta be one of my worst experiences at a taco shop... like I said, I'm not sure if they were just having an off day... but I won't ever be returning here. Worst taco shop I've ever had.

Yelp
I had me some beef rolled tacos from this taco shop, but I suspect there might of been some potatoes mixed in with the beef too. I the rolled tacos were decently priced at $3.80 something with tax. The rolled tacos were crispy but still had a little to much oil in them. They need to drain these just a little more. The shredded beef inside was tender and offered pretty good flavor. These rolled tacos were a little fatter than most. The shredded white and yellow cheese were typical but good. I always like a sprinkling of Cotija cheese on my rolled tacos but I am not sure if they offer it here. The guacamole was okay. It was somewhat watered down and needed to be seasoned a little better. In the end, they were good rolled taco and with a little less oil and chunkier guacamole, the would be much better. The lady at the counter was friendly and she even called me "joven," so that was good! There is not inside seating at this place. Just a drive thru and seating out in front. The good thing, a good number of tables are shaded.

Yelp
MY FOOD WAS LITERALLY RAW UNCOOKED. THEY REFUSED REFUND. mind you. i was extremely kind about the situation AND tipped them on my debit card IN A DRIVE THRU. avoid this nasty place. the old lady literally plotted with her husband and it was extremely foul experience. i suggest sombrero mexican a couple miles away

Yelp
Come and try the food everthing is so delicious cant go wrong with the adovada tacos and not feeling so well they have the best caldos

rebecca g.

Yelp
Giant Fish Burrito My favorite fish burrito!!! I live by SDSU and have tried fish burritos from all the places close to me. The fish has this light, beautiful fry. So it's crispy and the fish is never dried out. The burrito has white sauce, cabbage and pico. The other places all seem to use either a Chipotle white sauce or too much pico.

Yelp
Such a hidden taco shop. Bomb Tortas and subs pretty much is everything is great. Its a small taco shop with outdoor patio. They do postmates. I usually get a California B. With some rolled tacos so good recommemd to anyone.
google avatar

Maria M.

Yelp
I was craving the huarache & I remember I had one here a long time ago it was delicious... so today I decided to go back after so long & guess what the huarache was still delicious lol... husband and kids loved the burrotosss!!! And the pricing is actually pretty decent compared to others!!
google avatar

Ellie P.

Yelp
Not only it's my in laws business shop but their food is good!!! The rolled tacos are bomb!!
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
Need to get it together in their prices! No matter what I ordered, they wanted to charge more than the posted prices. I told them what the price was on the board and he said "they haven't changed the prices yet" Didn't even say "sorry" must be they don't care. The burrito was good but I most likely won't be back as several places around have just as good for less money.
google avatar

Carter B.

Yelp
Great inexpensive place to eat the taste is like home made but not TJ style this is way better more like Deep South Mexico . Their service is quick and friendly at first sight looks like there is just an open area at the front but they actually have an indoor small cozy place on the back that is better if you don't feel like eating outside
google avatar

Tania P.

Yelp
El rodeo has some bomb carne asada tacos! I highly recommend coming here. With some Chiles asados you can't go wrong. Yum!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome fish tacos!!! Def recommend coming here the next time in you are in the San Diego area!!!!

Yelp
The urge for Mexican food hit me big time when I was going to work the other day. I saw that El Rodeo was nearby to my place of employment so I decided to give it a go. I was not in the mood for cafeteria food at the hospital & nothing was going to stop me from getting a carne asada burrito for lunch. I was a man on a mission. I pull into the drive through & make my order: a cheese quesadilla, carne asada burrito & a coke. I park my car & dig in. First up was the cheese quesadilla. It was ok, nothing special. Next up was the main attraction: the carne asada burrito. For starters, the burrito was a good size unlike so many of the other taco shops in town which lately have inflated their prices while decreasing the size of their burritos substantially. Roberto's, the famous SD taco chain is famous for doing this although I still like their food. I take a bite & man oh man was it good! The beef just oozed of flavor & juices. Every bite seemed to be a flavor explosion of carne asada goodness. I ended up getting juices & other bits of this delicious burrito all over my uniform but I didn't care. This was a damn good burrito & I was one satisfied customer. I saw the reviews later on this place & it seems to be hit & miss with only a 3 star rating overall but I would go back for the carne asada burrito for sure. If your a carne asada burrito fan like me, give it a shot.

Yelp
Their pollo asado quesadilla is my favorite. Salsas are terrible but nothing that some chiles asados can't fix!
google avatar

Yelp
Super great food! Every time I've come here the food is consistently good and authentic.

Yelp
Tasty, fast, fresh, and a great value! Burritos are giant and are really nice. I'll definitely be back soon. Definitely try the vegetarian burrito!!

Tanya M.

Yelp
Been going here since high school, one of my favorite taco shops. The food is always fresh and the workers are pleasant. Everytime I get a California Burrito they actually make it the size it's supposed to be. They always fill my cup to the top too, that's always appreciated.

Asma M.

Yelp
I got the guerrero burrito. Very good! Great service too. The cashier is very informative and nice!
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
Always here , just wish it was open later then what it is lol No complaints on the food , the price or the service tho! Always coming in clutch
google avatar

Theodore W.

Yelp
I have been coming here for the longest time. Never once have I been disappointed by their food or their service! I get Carne Asada Fries here all the time. Love them to bits!

Joseph P.

Yelp
Bean Burrito: $3.50 (including tax) A steal. I liked it, too. And I am selective about bean burritos. I had finished shopping at Costco and went across the street but saw that the Mexican joint there was closed. Then I went to another place nearby but walked out after seeing they charged five dollars for a bean burrito. While driving home, I remembered eating at El Rodeo about five years ago and liking their bean burrito. I gave it another try and it is still top notch. I like this place's fish burritos as well. And their service has always been welcoming.

Yelp
I need the owner to contact me. JESSE is the name I was given. 3:08 pm on Tuesday we came in and ordered a Carne Asada Burrito with no salsa. We walked back to the car, opened the bag and pulled the burrito out. There was barely any meat inside. We walked back and asked her to fix it and she said no. We showed her the inside and she just shrugged her shoulders. This is how new management treats their customers. We let her know that we would be contacting the owners and yelping about it and she shrugged again. WHAT A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. This could have been an easy fix and now you would prefer that I Yelp about it rather then fix it to make us return customers? I think NOT.

Yelp
Excellent handmade taco. Freshly made shell. Very good food. Highly recommend. Convenient location

Yelp
There's a very cute girl who works at El Rodeo Mexican Food with a cheek piercing. I wanted to axe whether it was intentional or did the piercer miss his/her intended target. They have average carne asada. They have a slightly above average breakfast burrito. However, it was kinda small and thin. Their pollo asado is the real winner of the three. Breakfast burrito # 116 - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kBn91_DDfk7fgWJyIoeR5A?select=TbgWj6Z6ToMIP8jgGPq2Xw Carne asada burrito (with beans and cheese only) # 107 - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kBn91_DDfk7fgWJyIoeR5A?select=I-H6KYJQkaJQSPd5d0I7Ow Pollo asado burrito (with beans and cheese only) # 56 - http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kBn91_DDfk7fgWJyIoeR5A?select=gVse5l255U4Dun-kmQZu6A The place is very colorful (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kBn91_DDfk7fgWJyIoeR5A?select=ZJfJC8sji9eSWBRmC6hXKg http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/kBn91_DDfk7fgWJyIoeR5A?select=plA3sDZRFbalie_idjxg5g). Might remind some people of the LSD that they did back in the 60's (though, for some, as recently as yesterday).

Yelp
One of the taco shops I used to hit up all the time when I lived over in the college area.Small place , looks like an old taco bell painted while somebody was tripping on acid. Large menu , two small windows in front seemed like they were closed? Then a little man popped out the window . He was super friendly and once my ears adjusted and I could understand him. Went with the Cali burrito and carnitas taco . Little bit of a wait for the food , they're cooking it to order. He gave me my bag and said how many salsa's , I said 5 and he said you want a big one? Hmm, I think he meant salsa? So I said yes. Ripping into the food when I got home. Large burrito and carnitas taco looked good and one swimming pool of salsa, excellent . Burrito and carnitas taco were good , I remember it being better , when I lived here 10 years ago. Good option if your in the area. ¡¡andale andale, arriba arriba!!

Yelp
So we thought we'd try a new Mexican food place close to the house and this place looked pretty good based on the reviews and star ratings. Well, I started on my carne asada burrito and all of a sudden TONS of grease and juices started flowing out of the bottom of the burrito. You can see in the picture above on the plate what was created. And there was hardly any Carne Asada in it to boot! So that was one of the worst burritos I've had. Then my rolled tacos were up next. The 3 rolled tacos were just wrapped up in the paper. Cheese, guacamole, and everything was stuck to the paper. There was hardly anything on the tacos themselves! You can see that in the same picture. Absolutely ridiculous. One of the worst places I've had.

Yelp
EL Rodeo is definitely my go to Mexican spot at night. They always hook it up with the meat, even when their portions are already huge! The older woman who works at night is a sweetheart! She makes us want to keep coming back, so we do!

Tania G.

Yelp
This is probably my new favorite taco shop!! I had a chimichanga burrito big portion and my bf had cesina with beans, rice, tomatoes and cheese with a side of tortillas and it was so delicious I would recommend this place and will be coming back. The customer service is great I loved it. From the previous post that I have read I believe they have improved or my experience was excellent.
google avatar

Jose P.

Yelp
One of the best taco shops in SD! Food is delicious, friendly customer service, Family owned, definitely one of my go to spots I definitely recommend you try this Taco shop :)
google avatar

Joe T.

Yelp
It is kind of hard to miss this place along El Cajon Blvd being painted in yellow and red. They have a private parking lot, which every time I stop in, is almost always empty. The food however is pretty good. Everyone in San Diego has an opinion on their favorite Mexican hole in the wall. I do not think a place that serves bad Mexican food will stay in business very long. The service is friendly every time I go. Only downside is the only seating is outdoors. Usually not a problem in sunny San Diego but sometimes it is nice to be out of the elements.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
We went through the drive-thru. The lady couldn't really understand what I was saying, but she figured it out. We had to wait a little bit for our food, and it was overpriced. There was also this mysterious $.50 charge, which is obviously not much, but apparently they charge you to use a debit/credit card; however, they fail to mention that when you pay and there are no signs. I got the chicken flautas, which were actually really good. They don't put lettuce on them, though, and I like that bit of freshness to lessen the greasy food. My husband got the carne asada nachos, but they weren't anything special. Overall, not our favorite taco shop.

Mya R.

Yelp
El rodeo is my fav taco shop!!! Decent prices ,there fast and friendly always come threw!!!
google avatar

Devin C.

Yelp
Carne fries was so bomb here I'm a foodie head so trust me when I say delicious the food was fresh fresh crispy meat fresh I love the customer service

Range C.

Yelp
El Rodeo is an outside-dining place near 69th on El Cajon. The garden is nice and somewhat protective. I wasn't excited about eating out in the near warmth, but I bought a bean and cheese burrito for good measure. The burrito was as if it were made by any one of the other taco shops in town, so you could say it lived up to the standard. Nice setting, traditional and lots of space.
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
This place has THEE best California burritos!!! #1 they are massive and #2 they have a great ratio of meat to potatoes. The green salsa I have never been disappointed!

carla a.

Yelp
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Couldn't get my order right. Food was horrible. There are so many mexican take out places nearby. Do yourself a favor. Go elsewhere
google avatar

Cyrus G.

Yelp
CONCEPTUAL MEXICAN FOOD: WIN. the wicho loco burrito is the best i've had in my life. a carne asada burrito (steak, cheese, sour cream) that also has two rolled tacos IN IT. not a special order - this is actually on the menu! a transcendent burrito. like putting a waffle between two pancakes, or perhaps the mexican equivalent of kfc's double down, but without the shame or heart disease that entails. san diego drive through mexican joints are dime a dozen, but i have never seen or heard of a place loco enough to create something like this. everything about it - the meats, the tortilla, the perfect amount of sour cream, and two moist taquitos inside . . . mind blown. i highly recommend it.
google avatar

Alyssa J.

Yelp
I hate leaving bad reviews, but sometimes its just necessary. My fiance and I were looking for a mexican place closer to where we live, as our preferred place is all the way in Linda Vista. We randomly chose El Rodeo because its really close to where we live and the grocery store I was shopping at. I pulled up to the drive thru and the gentleman that took my order was super nice and friendly, so I immediately had high hopes. While I was waiting for my food, I was also briefly glancing through their yelp reviews and saw almost all positive things towards the top. I went home to my fiance confident that we were about to enjoy a delicious meal. How wrong I was. I will let his review speak for itself (yelper David J.) I had ordered a bean and cheese burrito with sour cream. Pretty easy, standard fare, that's never been messed up before. I bit into my burrito and came away with a mouthful of rice. I thought maybe they had just spilled some in there on accident, but when I opened up the burrito, the entire thing was just plain rice, except for maybe 2 tablespoons of beans at the bottom and maybe a teaspoon of cheese. No sour cream to be found. I thought that they surely had given me someone else's burrito, but upon closer inspection of yelp reviews, it seems all to common an occurrence and that more than likely they wouldn't have remade my burrito even if I'd driven all the way back there and asked. On top of everything else, it was really expensive, and believe me-we've tried a lot of places looking for another gem. This was without a doubt the worst burrito I've ever had in my life.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
I, too, like the painted gates and the way the place manages to take you away from El Cajon Blvd for a few minutes. The bouganvilla also adds to the atmosphere. I give them an "A" for their effort to create a different vibe in the little courtyard out front. It's kinda fun to sit at the picnic tables and read all the handmade signs in the window, half of which are indiscernible to gringos like me. As for the food, I can recommend the chile relleno burrito. I also like their beans, so the good old bean & cheese works for me. I'm not crazy about their flour toritllas -- they have a "lardy" taste to them (not sure if they really have lard or not). All in all, worth a visit if you're in the area.
google avatar

Julianna M.

Yelp
the food is ok. But the two stars were for customer service. I went through the drive through and I ordered food and a drink. When I got to the window I got the food but no drink so I just asked for the drink I ordered. I dont know if this guy was having a bad day or what but he yelled, "You did NOT order a drink! Why didnt you say so before!?? I repeated the order and you didnt say anything! (which he did not) Now I have to charge it again! WHAT kind of drink do you want??!!" Like I understand if he did not hear me order one before but like why do you have to yell at a customer over it when all you have to do is grab a can of soda and hand it to me. I just drove off without a drink. Not worth it.
google avatar

Brian N.

Yelp
The Wicho Loco Burrito here is the best thing ever. 2 rolled tacos, steak, cheese, & sour cream inside a flour tortilla. Mmmmmm.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Well, I really missed Colima's when I lived in University Heights. Now that I'm all the way out here in La Mesa it seemed I was at a loss. It was just to far to drive (oh no right) The no taco shop could compare. To dry, service sucked, portions were small, to much cilantro no enough flavor, getting sick among other things. This place easily rivals all, if not better then all. The burrito are big, the choices are vast, and of course tasty as $(%*. If I were a renowned critic I'd give this place gold stars, all five of um as far as taco shops go. Tis' simply te bestest. I highly suggest the Chihuahua burrito, or the Texano. The gringos good for breakfast to for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
The GIANT FISH BURRITO....is out of this world!!! We've been going to El Rodeo for over 20 years and the Giant Fish Burrito is the only thing we ever order other than our drinks (the Jamaica and Tamarindo aguas are tasty!!).....be sure to order some limes on the side and squeeze the juice and add a little hot sauce (we prefer the red), to every bite....OMG! Thank you El Rodeo for always making our burritos the same delicious way every time!!!
google avatar

Branden S.

Yelp
Got food poisoning from here. I ordered a quesadilla and it was too greasy. So not only did I not enjoy the food but I also got sick.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
Here are my thoughts after one visit: We thought the decor/ambience was better than the food. I was disappointed in the chile relleno burrito, too beany for my liking. Perhaps I've been permanently spoiled by La Posta's version but it did nothing for me.The carne asada quesdilla was much better. We did like the hot sauce quite a bit, especially since they give you big 4oz portions instead of the standard 1oz ones you get at most places. So that counts for something. All in all, a decent eat, but nothing spectacular.
google avatar

Smile H.

Yelp
Please DO NOT eat at this place. I ordered rolled potato tacos and they gave me old, frozen tacos they had in the freezer from who knows when. They just put them in the microwave and gave them to me like that. How do I know that? Because the potato was really cold and the plastic plate where they served them was melted like when you put a plastic plate in the microwave and it melts. They had the guts! I will report them higher up. That's so unhealthy and unethical. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!
