Where to Find Birria in Portland and Beyond | Eater Portland

"Sabor De Mexico, a little red cart in a nondescript East Portland food pod, stands out with its weekend birria de chivo, announced on a sign displayed on the sidewalk. This is good news for fans of birria en caldo; however, antojitos like tacos dorados and the 14-inch pizzadilla are made with the more common birria de res, not goat. Sabor De Mexico is open for takeout and delivery."

"Though I rarely dine out, I recently discovered a gem: the small restaurant at 1679 S Market Blvd, Chehalis, WA. It's a must-try, especially if you appreciate food cooked fresh to order, served piping hot straight from the kitchen."

Google
I have always enjoyed the food served at this restaurant, the chicken enchiladas are to die for. Service is always friendly and fast. It’s a great place to eat.

Google
Best chicken Flautas I've ever had! And that says something cause I've had some very very good Flautas growing up in a Mexican household. Lol I can't say much about they're other dishes but it's a good little restaurant an im sure the other dishes are good as well.

!Que Rico! Home made corn tortillas, home made tomatillo salsa, and everything else was amazing. This is by far the best tacos that I've had in WA state!

Google
I was not expecting the awesome flavor. Good atmosphere with Latin music playing at a appropriate volume level that let's you enjoy the time. Jamaica water was just great. Beans and rice flawless 😋 with steak tacos was a good choice. The different salsas all of them just great and it felt like tortillas were fresh made. I have found a place to save on my map. I totally recommended this place you won't regret.

Every time we passed this place we saw nobody in there and thought this place must not be that good. Then my daughter and I had a mother/daughter weekend and she wanted Mexican food. Being from California where it's on every corner we have had a hard time finding good Mexican food. We Yelped this place and it had good reviews so we tried it. YUM!!!! Chips and Salsa great! Salsa is spicy if you can't handle heat. I asked for a side of guacamole for my daughter because she couldn't handle it. My daughter got the Menudo she loved it. Said it was almost as good as my dads was ❤. I got the nachos fries with carne asada, very good! Next time I am going to get the flautas. We did have to ask for refills of things, but when we got there there was only 1 family. We arrived and like 3 to 4 other families came in and got very busy. The food took a bit, but it was VERY fresh like it was cooked from scratch so I can see why. Overall we enjoyed it VERY much. Our server did check on us often after we got our food. We paid and my daughter asked me if we could leave a tip. We definitely want to take my boyfriend back to have him try it. He LOVES his Mexican food. Hence one of the reasons why he's with me LOL. Highly recommended!

Google
Best and juciest al pastor tacos I've ever had. And the homemade tortillas and green salsa are incredible. My undisputed go-to Mexican joint from now on.

Google
Fresh homemade and delicious!

Yelp
Still for me the best tacos and sopes in all of WA. Most places use pre-made sopes and store bought tortillas. Not here. The food is slow because they're back there making the tortillas after you place the order. I've been to Mexico a lot and would put this tacos over many I've had down there. All comes down to the tortilla and the amazing family that owns this place.

Yelp
I went to this place for the first time and was disappointed. After I ordered my meal, they served the chips and salsa. The chips were stale and the salsa was not fresh and tasted like refrigerator. It seemed like it had been sitting in an open container in the fridge. The asada tacos were not bad. Tortillas were handmade and served a decent portion of meat. The flautas were not flautas... They shaped some masa in a tubular shape and filled with flavorless chicken. The crumbled cheese on top had a funny smell, was not good at all. Definitely not worth the $20 I paid for it. I will not be coming back to this place

Yelp
We went and tried it tonight . First let me say the people working in there are very very nice . It's very clean in there . There's a nice variety and selection of dishes on the menu . Those are the three stats I give . I took two stars away because the food quality and value for the price just isn't there . It's over priced for what you get, and the torta de carne asada was really more of a refried bean sandwich because that was all you could taste . Very little meat and what was there was very fatty. The second star I removed was overall taste and seasoning it wasn't there . I'm really sad because I really am tired of looking for authentic Mexican food from my country . The hunt continues .

Yelp
Great food small place in Finley. Great prices and wonderful tasting food very friendly atmosphere

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick bite. Great food. Homemade tortillas! Amazing Al Pastor tacos. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Off the beaten path in Chehalis is a small restaurant that sits in a place that you could pass by a 100 times and never see this little place. And I mean little, the seating capacity is around 20 people. But they can put out some great food with authentic flavors that reminds me of the small stands in Mexico. The salsa that is brought to your table is a bit different and almost blended rather than chopped but the flavors are outstanding. The fish tacos were done perfectly and had a little char flavor and fresh seasoning. The guacamole tacos were another winning choice. Fresh made guacamole served with a meat of your choice on a soft fluffy corn tortilla. The pricing is about average or maybe a little less than your average restaurant. The atmosphere is a bit sparse but quite efficient. The only downside was the service was a bit slow and that might have been because the two people running the restaurant seem to be cooking and serving. It might have been because it was a holiday weekend and maybe they were short staffed but we will be back again on out next visit.

Yelp
I stopped in on a road trip looking for a new place to add to my places to eat. It is a small and cozy place tucked into the small city of Chehalis. I tried to to talk to the hostess but she said she didn't understand English. When another couple talked to her in English, she understood them. I then tried to talk to her again, but it didn't go anywhere. I ordered 3 Tacos that were cooked quickly and were hot and very tasty. It came with salsa that was good and had some kick. I was given chips and salsa while I waited. I paid $12.99 for my meal of 3 Tacos. While the food was good, my experience with the staff was less than stellar and I felt I was an outsider. (Which, since I was traveling, I was) Food, very good. Service, not so much.

Yelp
The food tastes amazing and the quantity it high. The service and atmosphere has more to be desired. Service was quick when we arrived, but after receiving our meals, never saw the waitress again. Never got my water and we needed more napkins. The atmosphere was loud and hard to hear at our table due to the neighbouring table patrons. The area is very open, so if you want something more intimate, this isn't for you. Costs seems to be up as well. One might argue your getting more for your money, but I feel like I have so many Mexican options, both authentic and Americanised, with better service, I would go elsewhere first.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food served from a hole in the wall joint you probably already passed by dozens of times. If you're into authentic style, cooked from scratch Mexican food wrapped in a homemade tortilla - THIS IS THE ONE! They are influenced by cuisine from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, and they specialize in fresh seafood and taqueria dishes. Ordered a steak burrito with only meat and salsa inside, they delivered. The chips and salsa were solid and their two salsas were tasty. Best authentic Mexican restaurant in Lewis county in my opinion.

Audrey S.

Yelp
The food is really good! Only thing I'm iffy about are the prices, but that's understandable considering everything is expensive. I will be going back

Bob M.

Yelp
Simple, fresh, authentic American Mexican food. The service was good and I got my meal very fast. I dined in, but looks like a lot of business is take out. But it has a nice inside dining area with seven tables and booths. I didn't see a lot of vegetarian options, however they just made fajita veggies AND avocado for my burrito! Just ask and they were very flexible, and it's all made fast and fresh. Chips served before meal with an excellent green salsa. Not too spicy, and they provide red and green sauces on the side to make your meal just the way you like.

Yelp
Small place, We used to eat here before Covid. Prices have over tripled since last time here.I ordered tacos for $11.99 got three tiny tacos with barely 1 Tablespoon of meat each, rice and beans are $7. Additional. While waiting for food to be prepared they gave us a small handful of chips and about 3 Tablespoons of salsa, asked for more salsa and they never came back. We were the only ones in the restaurant, food was good but very little. WE WONT BE GOING BACK.

Yelp
The best, authentic Mexican food!! My boyfriend and I absolutely love this place. The food is so fresh and all homemade. The homemade tortillas cannot be beat. If you love authentic Mexican food, this will be your new favorite place. I especially love the enchiladas Rojas! The tacos are also great!
google avatar

Julie K.

Yelp
The food was ok. Nothing too spectacular and it wasn't bad either. I know I could get the same kind of food at a taco truck for a few dollars cheaper but then I would have a warm place to sit. This place isn't somewhere I'd rave about and I probably won't be back, not because the food was terrible, but because there a new quite a few Mexican places with great food at a cheaper price.

Scott C.

Yelp
First time here. Hostess was friendly and helpful and the food was great. 3 carnitas tacos. Mmm. Something special about the beans and rice, too!

Gina R.

Yelp
Had ordered the camarones a la diabla extra spicy and the food was 10/10!!!! Definitely recommend coming in.

Patty H.

Yelp
A little run down but the food was fresh and wonderful. No complaints here! Even my picky son was happy with his meal.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Stop in here if you're passing through on the I-5 and need a great spot to grab lunch/dinner. From two so-cal natives, the Mexican food was delicious and of great quality. Good prices too! Also, service was quick and the horchata was tasty :)
google avatar

Della D.

Yelp
I called and ordered a STEAK BURRITO WITH NO BEANS pretty simple right??!! I picked up my burrito and when I got home to eat it there were actually extra beans in there!!!! Needless to say I was not happy!! I called to explain to them that they messed up on my order and they claimed I ordered 3 tacos with no beans.....I was like then why did you give me a burrito they said I could only come back that night I had worked all day and it was 7:30 I was not driving back to town they wouldn't let me get it the next day!!! I am very disappointed because I really liked this place and they were really rude!!!! I will not be returning!!! And you shouldn't either!!!!

Jayda C.

Yelp
I did enjoy the food but the food didn't have a lot of flavor like it was bland not sure the price we paid was worth what we got. But also the horchata was powder and not homemade.

Yelp
I was looking for fresh Mexican and this place delivered. From the chips and fresh home made salsa that comes out the moment you walk in it's absolutely wonderful. I ordered carne asada tacos with a side of home made guacamole and it did not disappoint. I loved and enjoyed every minute of it. I will be back every time I drive through. Wish I lived closer.... I would eat there everyday. My children and husband loved it too. They can't wait to go back. The chips and salsa are so good. Addicting. We couldn't stop eating them. The tortillas are freshly made and you can tell. The meat for the carne asada was very delicious. (Now for those that want details explaining the place). The floor under my chair was sticky. A couple chip crumbs on the floor. Bathroom was not super clean but it's not unusable. Silverware and glasses were clean. The atmosphere was real (like the food) and friendly. Hardworking local owned family. Super sweet. Small place but fills up so do not expect fast. The food is all freshly prepared and made from scratch the moment you order it. That means that kind of goodness takes time. You can take your children but let them bring a coloring book or a toy to play with while waiting for your food. And for those that it matters too: Soda pop is in a can. They have both coke and Pepsi. Beers are in bottles and limited to about 5-6 beers (modelo and Pacifico and a couple others). I didn't see margaritas. I highly recommend. If you like your food to taste like it was made in Mexico.... this is the place. I do not like the taste of lard so I am very picky about most Mexican restaurants. Many of them use cans of lard and their food tastes like it. Not this place. Go and enjoy. You won't regret it.

Yelp
Really Authentic Mexican food best huarache de adobada ! I live an hour away and drive there just for this plate

Deena U.

Yelp
Happened upon this little place in the middle of a busy day and had lunch. It's small and tables are well spaced. The young woman who served us was friendly, prompt and helpful. The place was neat and clean. Beverages are served in their containers with a sanitized opener. The menu is traditional sort of 'tex-mex' and the food is very, very good, starting with better than usual corn chips and the freshest, tastiest salsa I've had outside my own kitchen. My fish tacos were outstanding and my partner's burrito was, he said, the best he's had in a long while. And huge. We'll definitely go back if ever we're in the neighborhood.

Yelp
We've been driving past El Sabor for 3+ years and tonight we finally stopped. We walked out wondering why it took so long to eat here - the food is really good! I had the Enchiladas Verde with pork and chicharones. The pork was tender and full of flavor and the chicharones were bite size pieces of pork belly that melted in my mouth, although, my wife did not care for the gelatinous texture. The green sauce had a fresh taste with the right amount of spice. The rice and beans are basic...add the pink sauce to the rice to spice things up a little. My wife had the fish tacos, a stand by menu item for her, and she was not disappointed in the thick cuts of white fish and the fresh fillings. Will we go back? Oh yeah...we'll probably stop the next time we drive by
google avatar

Marlo K.

Yelp
Great people and great food! Tacos are made with hand made tortillas which are excellent! Love the Verde burrito too!

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Like other reviewers, I saw this place and no one was dining at 5:30pm. I trusted the Yelp reviews and gave it a try. Absolutely loved this place! Best salsa ever. It's a very small restaurant, holds 25 to 30 people max. Don't let the looks or lack of dining patrons mislead you. This is legit and authentic Mexican cuisine. Super friendly owners. A true hole in the wall gem off the beaten path.
google avatar

Yelp
Very good food at this hole in the wall restaurant. This may not be the type of pace where you would stop and say "look at this, we need to stop a and eat here," but you do. Stop and eat here. You won't regret it. Loved the white frijoles, the fresh, very hot corn tortillas, and the guacamole.

Jen J.

Yelp
Tacos were good, but really expensive for how tiny they were. They were street taco size and 3 were $9 and change with tax. That's a lot for less meat than comes in a burger. Also the cashier wanted to up charge us if we ordered a variety of meats, even though all the meat is the same price. Why?

Ana B.

Yelp
Okay let me begin with saying I was very skeptical about this place when I drove up to it. It was very small and thought it was probably a No. I still decided to give it a try and let me tell you it was so freaking delicious!!! I come from California we're you have many taco/Mexican joints so this really kicked the spot!!! I live in Oregon and Washington and have not found a good Mexican restaurant til now .

Yelp
Not happy at all. Went here for lunch. Prices in restaurant were higher than the listing on the website. They didn't offer to match the advertised price, and simply pointed to their menu. The Food was average at best. The Fajitas had no sides of sour cream or Guacamole. The refried beans must have been white, as they were a pale white color. If my experience were better, I would gladly recommend this establishment, but I won't return here for the pricing or the quality.

Wilmer S.

Yelp
El Sabor de Mexico isn't much to look at but their food is the real deal. My wife and I just split two tortas (sandwiches).. one of carnitas, one al pastor... we could not have been more pleased. The meats were just right. The avocado was perfectly ripe. The bread just what you would get in Mexico. We also split a jamaica drink. GREAT. We will be going back...
google avatar

Pablo S.

Yelp
Hits the spot! This little gem is an authentic Mexican restaurant. Chicken burrito = great. Asada & Adovada tacos = great. Salsa on the table, for chips = OUTSTANDING. We have saved this joint as a favorite in our GPS. We will return! Update, 3/31/14: Still yummy! Still inexpensive. The orange sauce is kickin'!
google avatar

Yelp
Found this little place the other day and can't stop eating there! Very authentic and tasty. Amazing food with great prices! must eat here!

Thomas O.

Yelp
Way over priced compared to competitors in town the serve the exact same menu. Service is also slow and unprofessional.

Jailene H.

Yelp
Best Mexican restaurant in Lewis county !!!! Food is amazing!! it's really hard to find a good Mexican restaurant everything is super yummy I definitely recommend it:)

Stephen T.

Yelp
I'm a local. Four blocks from my house. Been coming here when I get a craving for decent Mexican food. Over the past year I have seen the food quality go down , down, down. Went in yesterday. Ordered 3 Chicken tacos, 2 pork tacos and a supreme beef burrito to go. I am 65 years old and have enjoyed mexican food from Acapulco to Bellevue, WA. Spent many years in LA and love real Mexican food when you can find it. Sad news is I could tell everything besides the overstuffed rice and beans in the burrito were left over beef and gristle and several day (at least) old ingredients / components. The pork tacos consisted of pretty good corn tortillas but everything inside them was old news. The pork chunks were dried and chewey. I don't think my cat would have ate them. Place is obviously struggling to stay afloat cash wise. I should mention that the owner and his wife were not working this day (Saturday) perhaps they figure they left it in good hands. I will not be buying food here again.

Andrea L.

Yelp
Have always loved the food at this place. HOWEVER, twice I have stopped by with coworkers to grab lunch and they have been closed. The sign on the door and and online states that they open at 11am. Evidently, not the case. I hate having my time wasted. I may not return because of this. Too bad...the food is awesome.
google avatar

Jared W.

Yelp
OMG! So yummy! I was happy to see how clean everything was. Everything I tried was bursting with flavor. I would eat here every day if I could afford it!
google avatar

Brittany V.

Yelp
Long story short: 3rd trimester pregnancy cravings. So, I was looking for something really specific. I needed meaty, spicy and fresh veggies. Opted for a couple of burritos (one for me, one for baby?) and they were fantastic! A LOT of burrito for the price. And, their green sauce is SO FREAKING GOOD. My baby did a little dance after I ate that burrito. Would DEF recommend.

Big I.

Yelp
Love this little spot. Only slight knock is that their hours aren't always accurate. But I guess that's to be expected with a small, family-owned business, so I can't review too harshly. The folks are super friendly, the food is awesome, especially their Cubana sandwich. Their salsas are very fresh-tasting and clearly made fresh all the time. Love it.
google avatar

Loretta W.

Yelp
Terrible experience. Being part Mexican, I know good food when I see it. And this place was not it. Only ONE vegetarian option, prices are WAY too high, small servings, waitress did not check on us once, and the chips and salsa was even bad (more spices please). Never going back, weird vibe, and just ...no. Fish tacos were mostly just breaded with the fish flat as a pancake. Terrible.

Ms S.

Yelp
Wow! Amazing food! And nice big servings! Waitress was incredibly nice and attentive. And did I mention the food was delicious!!!

Dearmond B.

Yelp
Amazing food! Just stopped by driving thru on our way to Seattle- found this little hole in the wall place and we were not disappointed! Food- soooo delicious!

Kelley B.

Yelp
This is a great little place for wonderful Mexican food! Their prices are reasonable and their service is friendly! It is a small location with just 6 or 7 tables, but they do lots of carry out orders for locals, so usually getting a seat is not a problem.
