16 Essential Tex-Mex Restaurants In Houston

"Launched by the same family that brought Houston the Original Ninfa’s, El Tiempo is similarly known for its potent margaritas and sizzling fajita platters. Choose between the standard beef, chicken, spicy shrimp, or veggie fajitas, or amp things up with filet mignon, salmon fajitas with mango chimichurri, or seared spicy ahi tuna topped with mole. Take it to the next level with fajita add-ons, like the “la tana,” a mixture of serrano peppers, garlic, and cheese." - Brittany Britto Garley, Megha McSwain

Jeff Sessions’s Selfie With a Houston Restaurant Owner Was Always Going to Cause Backlash - Eater Houston

"El Tiempo Cantina co-owner Dominic Laurenzo posted a photo with Attorney General Jeff Sessions, which led to significant social media backlash. The photo was taken at the restaurant, and Laurenzo expressed being "honored" to serve Sessions. This upset many residents, as Sessions was associated with the Trump administration's family separation policy. In response to the outrage, El Tiempo Cantina issued an apology and deleted its social media accounts. Despite the apology, the backlash continued with negative reviews on Yelp and Twitter. The restaurant declined further comments." - Amy McCarthy

Consistently great Tex Mex. Family owned local chain. Great for large groups and family gatherings. Large open venue can be loud, but great for large parties. Service is fast and friendly. On the spot for drink and chip refills. All the food is flavorful and executed consistently well. The dishes are large and priced in line with mid tier TexMex for decent value. Decent sized parking lot that gets full at peak and there's some street parking for overflow.

Google
The food service was fast, waiter was exceptional and so was the food. I had the Acapulco shrimp and a strawberry margarita with sugar on the rim, and I'd get it again. The only issue, if I should even call it that, was it was too cold in the space. I'd rather be cold than hot so, that wasn't a real issue. Bring a cardigan and you'll be fine....This was my first time at this location and I'd definitely go again!

Google
I think this is about as Tex Mex as it gets! Being from California, it was a little weird being in a taqueria with country music playing, but it was great! Service was quick, and there was plenty of seating. Food was plentiful and delicious. Would definitely recommend if you are looking to try some Tex Mex in the Houston area!

I live in Kentucky but I haven't been to Houston in many years. Came back to Houston with my fiance. She loved, loved and loved Houston. My cousin picked us up and took us to El Tiempo. Food was amazing. Fajitas were tender. Tortillas were on point. Salsa was the shit and the staff, the best. We recommend El Tiempo if you want good service and good food. Hey, dont take my word for it. Go try it out for yourself.

Google
El Tiempo Cantina was a great experience. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was nice and welcoming. The service was good and friendly, which made everything even better. The margaritas were great, and the Chicken Alatana was full of flavor with a portion size big enough for two people. The meatball soup was also really good and comforting. The best part of the meal was the dessert. The sopapillas were perfectly fluffy and sweet, served with ice cream and cajeta on the side. Overall, we enjoyed the food, drinks, and the entire experience. It’s definitely a place worth visiting again.

Google
Ordered take out- you’re telling me I paid $25 for this? Be so for real, that’s a pinch of lettuce, the beans tasted like they went bad, there was barely any filling in the flauta, and the rice was mid and stale. I was expecting it to look somewhat like the picture, but after getting this? Also, 1 flauta? For that price? Change your menu item to “Chicken Flauta” for $20, not plural.

Google
The staff was friendly, Hector was great. The food was delicious. I LOOOOVE their salsa. Our only complaint was that it was uncomfortably cold in the restaurant.

Google
Only 3 of us and yes we needed to split the bill. Why so difficult? It took 30+ minutes and me getting up looking for waiter until approached by management, for the second time to get him to take the bill. Then another 10 minutes to bring bill back with our cards. This is ridiculous!!!! And so disappointing because I chose this place for a small reunion of FirstCity co-worker. My to go order at 4:51 and at 5:32 we are still waiting for waiter to return with our cards. WHY?? Never again this location!!

Yelp
El Tiempo on Navigation is one of my favorite pregame spots before an Astros game. They would get more of my business if they offered the free shuttle bus ride to the game like the restaurant next door, but I won't hold that against them. This is one of many El Tiempos in the city, but definitely one of the more popular ones. It is huge. Parking can be a pain depending on the time you come. El Tiempo is a product of the Ninfa's family. Ninfa's is a great spot, but this place expanded all over the place. Customer service has always been good on all my visits. The menu here is quite extensive. What you're going to get here is pure Tex Mex. If you're looking for something authentic, you may find a few options depending on what your definition of authentic is. What put their sister company on the map was supposedly being the creators of fajitas, so naturally their fajitas are pretty great. They also think it's great which means I feel like it is more expensive than other places. That basically is the case with their whole menu. That being said, the food is delicious here. I've had a variety of different things and I can't say I did not enjoy everything I've had. Their margaritas are also very good. I love that I can get a whole pitcher of my favorite rita here. They got all kinds of flavors with all kinds of tequila to fit any budget. For quality Tex Mex, El Tiempo is a great option! I will be back!

Yelp
Born from the memories of Mama Ninfa's Tex Mex the first El Tiempo Cantina on Richmond avenue opened in 1998, Ninfa's son Roland Laurenzo and his own son Domenic having since expanded to twelve locations plus a thriving catering business. Now with more than sixty years of experience defining Tex Mex cuisine, the space on Navigation Boulevard amongst the largest and most popular, it is inside that guests will find lively music playing amidst family photos, stained glass, wood and brick. Offering an expansive menu, their Fajitas legendary across Texas, El Tiempo makes both Corn Tortillas as well as Chips on-site and although filling up on either would be easy a tableside presentation of stretchy Cheese with or without spicy Chorizo should not be ignored. Visited solo at noon, Margaritas ignored this time around, instead of investing all remaining space in a sizzling plate of Fajitas the "Las Vegas Plate" instead delivered juicy Chicken Breast with Peppers and Onions alongside a hard-shell Beef Taco, sauced Enchiladas, Beans and Rice.

Yelp
We love El Tiempo and try to visit whenever we are in the Houston area. The food and drinks are consistently excellent and the service is attentive. The Navigation location is bright and airy with festive decor. On our last visit, we got fajitas and a burrito for the adults and fajita and chicken tender plates for the kids. All items were hot, fresh, delicious, and generously sized. El Tiempo hits the spot every time.

Yelp
I love this place. We had a large party and they accommodated us so well! Service is excellence. ,The food is always consistent and so delicious! The fajitas are our favorite and the tortillas are the best! That's why we always return to El Tiempo!

Yelp
Met a buddy of mine here for lunch under his recommendation. Service was quick and excellent. Queso with the brisket was excellent as well. Margaritas were pretty good but I've never remembered having a terrible margarita. The charro beans had a great flavor as well. I ordered the big crispy taco with just meat and cheese and would have liked it if they would have filled it up with meat and cheese as it was only filled up a 1/4 of the way. As it was the tacos were edible. I actually used the charro beans and queso to help fill the void in my taco. Overall... 4 stars. I would not hesitate to eat here again.

Yelp
I've put off trying El Tiempo restaurants for years, mainly because I was skeptical about whether the new Laurenzo family-connected brand could top the original Ninfa's restaurants or even long gone faves like Felix and the original Doneraki's. So, as a native Houstonian, I guess you could say I am a really, really tough customer. That said, I decided to come to the Navigation location for my birthday. I certainly enjoyed my experience here. However, I think if you are looking for an iteration that harkens back to the spirit and excellence of the old Ninfa's before the ownership changes and El Tiempo spinoff, this pales in comparison. The food here is really good flavor-wise and visually speaking, the presentation is also memorable. The guac here is basically deconstructed. Atop mashed avocado sit a few additional ingredients: minced garlic, onion, tomato and jalapeno. I'm not a fan of this style, but I get it. And I've been to restaurants where the guac, for the same price, was prepared table side. You're also supposed to get flour tortilla chips, but we only got these when it was time to go. The waiter didn't understand this comes with the guac. The frijoles a la charra had a really good flavor that was well developed, but the serving was kind of skimpy. The rice was a tad on the dry side, and you don't get much rice either. My favorite part of the meal was actually the tacos. One (beef) taco al carbon and a chicken fajita taco. The al carbon was missing the OG Ninfa's smoke/grill flavor and the chicken was lightly seasoned. I would have liked for the dish to have been served warmer but can say I still really liked it. The salsas (especially verde) and strawberry margarita were great. Service-wise, I thought the service was not attentive enough, but it was good enough that I skipped giving a complaint. Since this was a birthday dinner for me, the positive, festive spirits of the day carried the dinner for me. I loved the mango and strawberry tres leches cake and the impromptu birthday mariachi serenade.

Yelp
Walked in and said as immediately seated. Our server was full of recommendations and brought great energy. The restaurant itself and bathrooms were nice and clean. The food was filling and tasty! Was a huge fan of their salsa verde. The margarita was delicious but definitely could've used more tequila. Would absolutely come back.
google avatar

Nakita G.

Yelp
Authentic! Authentic! Authentic! The food was so delicious and authentic. Homemade tortillas and everything. Delicious margaritas. Food seasoned well. When I was walking to the door, you can feel the authenticity of the place just by the doors (it reminds me of the authentic Mexican restaurants in San Antonio). This will be a place that I would highly recommend and come back to.

Yelp
I consider myself a spicy margarita connoisseur, and even if the food was awful, El Tiempo would get 5 stars for their margaritas alone! (But the food and service are really good, too!) Back to the margarita: one of the best spicy margaritas I've get had, just make sure to request the tajin rim! They've also got some kick to them, so after two margaritas you'll be feeling good! They were pretty busy on a Friday night but we were able to sit at the bar while we waited for our table. Once we were seated, our waiter was very attentive and the food arrived quickly and was piping hot.

Yelp
The service was fantastic. Patient with the larger group we had and even brought out dessert for the birthday person! The food never disappoints (little price-y) but well worth it.

Yelp
ordered carnitas fajitas for the first time + I regret not ordering these all these years we frequent El Tiempo! another first was asking for spicier salsa + it did not disappoint - habanero mixed in with the regular salsa is the best thing I'll continue to do.

Yelp
Chips and Salsa are good, but the chips that come with the Queso are to-die for! We came out to Houston, and found the best of the best Tex-Mex. We did a salsa crawl.. Which is what it sounds like, trying salsa at the following restaurants: Ninfa's, El Tiempo, and Pappasito's. Below is how I scored El Tiempo and what I recommend getting. (all ratings are out of 10) Chips - 8.4 Salsa - 7.6 Green Salsa - 8.9 Queso - 8.5 Marg - 7.7 El Tiempo was a very solid choice for our tex mix salsa crawl. Not only did they have really good chips, and the green salsa was maybe my highest rated salsa of the entire trip, but we decided to get the queso. The queso is great, but the chips that come with the queso are so thick and Flaky and deep fried that they became the best chips of the entire trip. All of the drinks were refreshing, and the interior of the restaurant was very authentic and lively. We came here around lunch time which started to fill up very fast. I also got a plate of enchiladas and I finished the enchiladas before I even remembered to take a picture of the dish. I would definitely recommend this place to Future visitors or locals.

Yelp
Came here to celebrate my father in laws birthday and the food was delicious. I got one of the chicken plates and it came out steaming it was hot and the cheese was perfectly melted! One thing I will say though is that the rice was not it as well as the beans they could add more flavor to it. Also the rice and beans were not hot they were a bit cold. I also got a hot chocolate while I was there and it was great. The Christmas decor was also beautiful. Service was great they were always checking up on us. Definitely will come back to try more menu items!

Yelp
Food is a little pricey, but overall tasty Tex-Mex and great family and friend ambiance. It's a Houston Astros fan house, and it feels just right! We were seated and serviced promptly. Margaritas are strong, Micheladas are spicy - just how we love it! We've gone plenty of times, but recently for my husbands bday! He got his Marriachi hat experience! Thank you! We had a lovely time.

Yelp
Where do I begin? This place is worth having on your itinerary of places to eat! My first time here. In fact my first time in Houston, Texas and El Tiempo Cantina did not disappoint. We searched for local businesses to dine in to eat and this place is popping. The Mexican design was tasteful. The margaritas were ok. The traditional foods, like shrimp ceviche and fajitas was to live for. The portion was plenty - we ended up having to get "to-go bags", and the customer service was on point. The restroom; tidy and it actually smelled good. If back in town, I'd definitely add this place to my itinerary of places to eat!
google avatar

Yelp
Let first start off my saying the staff here is excellent! They are very quick at taking your order and constantly checking on the table. It is very important especially when you have a large party. There is tons of decor throughout the restaurant and very laid back atmosphere. They offer complimentary house chips with two salsas and it is very delish! I am queso lover so I ordered the chile con queso and it was really tasty. Now, since I was with a large party we had the mix parrilladas that come with fajita beef, chicken, sausage, grilled onions and shrimp. It also includes the fix-ins refried or charro beans, rice, pico de gallo, crema, and shredded cheese. For dessert, we had the churros with ice cream and tres leches and it was amazing! It was light and not too sweet! I would definitely recommend on your visit to get a little taste of sweetness. I will definitely be back to enjoy more items on the menu.

Yelp
I've been sick a lot lately because I'm just finishing up chemo. Since I was sick I knew I wasn't cooking so I decided to order enough food for the weekend. In my notes I specifically asked for salsa so they wouldn't forget it. Of course my food arrived with no salsa and other missing miscellaneous items. I went up there the next day to get the salsa and missing items. I spoke to Jose Garza the manager and he claimed if I returned at a later time he'd "fix" the problem. Keep in mind I spent more money whilst there. Which is why Jose suggested that we give them another opportunity. I called there before going there and although he took my call he didn't offer to fix anything. Jose was just talking because his actions did not match his words. As much money as I spend at this establishment and they aren't taking care of their repeat customers. I've even rented out their party room and hosted an event there with 75 people yet this is the level of service they offer. I guess customer service is non existent here. When the managers offer to fix things then don't stand on their word it showed me he was all talk. As much as I love this place my money can be spent where I'm appreciated.

Yelp
I can't believe this is the first time I'm writing a review for El Tiempo. We come here all the time and it's a favorite ! Parking: This is the main reason for my less than 5 stars. There is a parking lot but it does fill up quickly ! There is street parking you can find nearby though. The parking lot is kind of small relative to the restaurant though so just because parking is full doesn't mean there's a wait. Space/service There's bar seating, dining, and covered/inside patio seating. I believe there's also an outdoor patio but I've personally never seen anyone out there. The place can be loud and bustling. Service is always great! We recently had an order over cooked and they recognized it and replaced it for us. Food: The margaritas are perfection! I always get a frozen one and never skip on this. I also always get the burrito. To me it's the perfect size and has a great food distribution inside. Of course, there's always complimentary chips & salsas. The Salsa isn't my personal favorite - it's a bit too watery in consistency and smokey tasting in flavor. This is just a personal opinion. The green sauce is absolute perfection though! (Defjntiely recommend javing it on your burrito too). We also frequently get the tuna fajitas which are mind blowing. Overall, you really can't go wrong with any of the choices. If you're looking for a delicious meal, with space for a whole group (or just 1 friend), and reliable service then definitely come here !
google avatar

Angelica D.

Yelp
Every time we go, we have amazing service, food is always great, even when it's packed it's not too loud. One of my favorite places to go.
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
I had a lovely get together with old friends here prior to Thanksgiving. Collectively, we got the filet mignon by the pound. The order total came out to be around $25 per person ($75 for 3 of us). Beef was sizzling hot and delicious! Super savory, flavorful, and packed warmth that was much needed during the winter. Service: waiters were very courteous and even gave us the option to start with the lowest quantity and then add more later to save us money. Side dishes included chips, salsa, guac, fried rice, beans, cheese, queso, etc. Portions of the sides were on the smaller side. Overall I had a wonderful time at this cantina! Ambience was amazing - an authentic feel with a touch of Xmas decor! Definitely a Tex-Mex gem.
google avatar

Tracy W.

Yelp
Fantastic crab enchiladas. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant! Margaritas are delicious. My so n's fav are the steak quesadillas.
google avatar

Heather C.

Yelp
best hand made tortillaahhhs. Giving Ninfa's a run for the border! I'm from Madera California so I don't understand marshmallow atop tres leches....it's weird. I keep longing for the fresh whipped sweet cream of my abuelita! She would drown her Leche with Leche. The brisket is beautiful and the carnitas are tenderlicious. Tex mex is Texas. I just don't understand salsa that is served warm either but I'll eat it with a curious smile. Nice bar here with kind attentive staff. Next time we are I Houston this location is a must stop.
google avatar

Hannah A.

Yelp
Our favorite fajita spot! The meat is tender, juicy, and flavorful. The salsa is crave-worthy. The margaritas are strong (and now we know why they don't recommend a pitcher for only two!).

Anastasia H.

Yelp
Filet Mignon Fajitas!! How could El Tiempo Cantina make a great thing greater?! I had incredibly high expectations for their filet mignon fajitas. They were my entire reason for dining out that evening, and my entire reason for trying out El Tiempo. Definitely impressive! I had to remind myself that no matter how good and tender the meat was, it wouldn't literally melt in my mouth and I still needed to chew! If my entire experience was limited to the fajitas, I would have given them a 5. Unfortunately, they need to step up on their rice and beans. The rice and beans could not hold their own against the superstar quality fajitas and it was a big miss. I will absolutely dine here again. I'd be devastated if they ever took these things off their menu.
google avatar

Rain V.

Yelp
I like the beef fajitas - it was way better than Ninfa's. The beef was soft and flavorful. I enjoyed their tortillas. I think the service could be better - couldn't really find the waitress.

Anthony C.

Yelp
This place sucked. Idk how else to say it. Service was okay at best and the food is terrible. Really overpriced and really no actual flavor.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
El Tiempo on Navigation! The best location out of my opinion located in East Downtown! Wednesdays are fajitas for two special at $38.99 and of course with copias amounts of chips and salsa! Fajitas are superb along with the homemade flour tortillas! I didn't show the house frozen margarita but def one of the best house margaritas around town! Rating 9.5/10
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Went on a Friday afternoon/evening. Immediately seated outside as requested, wonderful service, nice margaritas, and great food. the patio is so nice.... will continue to come back!

Yelp
Do better El Tiempo. After a few fails from this establishment, I must regret to inform readers about your "To Go Charge," added to the already "Food Tax." I still gave a tip for this PICK UP ORDER, and I am glad I tipped accordingly. This sneaky practice is another reason to nickel and dime us customers for an already expensive Tex Mex dinner. Maybe it's because of your conservative political views to think it's okay. It would not surprise me in the very least. The host did an amazing job for catching the kitchen's mistake on my 6 piece $20 crab nachos. How many other expensive mistakes has this establishment done it's customers? See picture to this review on these to go crab nachos, but I must warn you. It contains ugliness and it may cause sadness or argerness pending the reader. You have been warned. Do better El Tiempo. Until then, this is Houston, Texas baby with so many Tex Mex options for HALF THE PRICE that put you to shame.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
Big, sprawling restaurant with everything family style / huge portions. Chips came out with a warm, Smokey salsa paired with a cool green sauce which was amazing. Classic margaritas were good, heavier on the orange liquor. The carnitas are delicious - get them extra crispy. The chicken verde enchilada was sooo good. Also loved the refried beans.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
After years of swapping back and forth between El Tiempo and Ninfa's either for variety or because one is grossly busier than the other, I felt like it was time to update my review. El Tiempo's service is always spot on. While I love the food at both, the service is just more consistent here. As has always been the case, the menu has something for everyone, and food is definitely still good. Margaritas always leave me saucy, and there's plenty of dessert for one's sweet tooth if that's your thing.

Elle S.

Yelp
Great for a group, and quick seating. Menu had l ots of variety and very fresh. The Parrillada was excellentas well as my spinach taco. We will be back!

Yelp
Went to El Tiempo this weekend with some friends. I've been here several times in the past but have never taken the time to write a review. We went on Sunday at lunchtime, and it was packed. The wait was 30 minutes for a table, so we sat at a high top, where there was no wait. The service was really bad -- we had no idea who our waiter was for a while, and it took almost 25 minutes to get the check after asking for it from two separate people. There are complimentary chips and salsa. I tried the following dishes: Queso (3/5): Decent queso. It has never been my favorite, but it does the job. Guac (5/5): Excellent guac. They serve it "salad style," so you can add the ingredients in the proportions that you want. I love how much garlic is in this guac. Great to share with the group. Lump Crab Nachos (3.5/5): Pretty good nachos. I got an order of six, which was plenty of food. The nachos come with a lot of crab on top, cheese, beans. There is jalapeno, sour cream, and pico on the side. This was definitely an ample serving. My friends got the carnitas, chicken fajitas, and the quesadilla. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. The portions are huge. Overall, my experience at El Tiempo was as expected. The food is good, with enormous portions, and the service leaves something to be desired. Definitely get the guac if you go.

Yelp
Nope. Nope. Nope. Fifteen people coming to our table every 2 minutes asking questions that interrupted our conversation. Read the table please- if we aren't giving you eye contact and ignoring you, then we don't want our water glass filled (It was half full) or our plate removed (we had only been there a short while). We felt extremely rushed and finally had to ask two of the servers to "give us a few minutes before you come back?" We were trying to have a serious conversation with a family member whom we haven't seen in a while. I ordered beef enchiladas and thought I ordered ground beef. The server assumed I wanted beef fajita enchiladas. I was so hungry and the meat was tender so I ate it. It wasn't bad. The rice was dry and crunchy. The cheese enchilada hardened very quickly. Unfortunately, all three of us experienced bloating that kept us belching for a good three hours after we ate. Very uncomfortable. I don't know what preservatives or other substance was used, but that was a very unpleasant experience. We all had beef fajitas... maybe it was the marinade? Maybe it was the green salsa? Mind you, I am usually full of gas, so I am used to it.. But this experience was even over the top for me. Miserable. Tums, anyone?

Yelp
The food and service is spectacular. Fast service. Great food. The highlight is the margaritas! Strong and delicious!

Yelp
Great food and great service. Patio is a good place to make friends and enjoy a margarita or two Fave: old school carnitas Yummy plate and could feed 2 people

Yelp
Food was as expected, always good. The bartenders did act as if they didn't want us eating at the bar, didn't give us their names, were annoyed when we ordered, and did not give us any silverware. Makes sense why the ninfas next door was on a 45 min wait and we walked right in to el tiempo.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
I love el Tiempo and it was my first time at this location! Busy for a weekday but still great service and so tasty. My margarita was fresh and delicious. The queso is always phenomenal, not too runny with great cheese flavor, exactly the way queso should be. Shared the filet mignon beef fajitas with friends- the upgrade is worth it! The meat is tender and juicy and so savory. The mixture of the onions and other toppings combined with fresh tortillas is a combo that never gets old! The sides that come with the fajitas are also very well done. I can't say enough great things!
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
Located adjacent to the Original Ninfa's. Parking is available in their lot. Honestly El Tiempo is overrated and overpriced for the food quality. There are better Texmex options and definitely better authentic Mexican options. Their fajitas are alright but Lupe's has much better meat, sides, and tortillas. Fajita pricing across the board has been insane and definitely higher than inflation. It's good enough to be sticking around and relevant but it's turned into a very typical chain Texmex joint and does not differentiate itself in any manner.

Yelp
A group of seven of us came in for dinner while we were visiting Houston and we made reservations about a week before we arrived in town. It is a big restaurant with lots of space, but glad we had reservations. The inside at night is fun and lit up with cool, medieval chandeliers. I decided on sharing shrimp fajitas with another person in our group and it was the perfect amount for the both of us. If you're hungry though, you'd do fine with this order. I enjoyed the homemade flour tortillas, something you don't get in Seattle (or maybe you can, I just haven't found it). I don't know if describing it this way sounds appetizing, but they were chewy and grilled nicely and I loved it. Flavors of the shrimp and veggies were good. I also added a mango margarita that was a) delicious and b) STRONG, would recommend. Overall, glad we came in. We've spoken to the locals who were all familiar with this restaurant. I found it to be an enjoyable experience and would recommend.

I come to this El Tiempo location every time I'm in Houston - it is a MUST have. They have, by far, the best fajitas I've ever had plus they serve it with MELTED GARLIC BUTTER. Insert drooling emoji! Plus the homemade tortillas - all of it is amazing. Staff is super friendly and attentive. You can't go wrong here!

Yelp
Great food, good chips and salsa, good service...we'll definitely make a return visit.

Yelp
$13 for one al la cart chicken enchilada... Also asked for queso on top of said enchilada and was not told about the five dollar up charge. So yes, 18 dollars for one average chicken enchilada. Will not be returning. So stupidly overpriced. Makes me sick to think about.

Yelp
Visiting my brother in Texas, my main goal was some authentic Mexican food. While I'm not sure this fits the bill, the food here was pretty delicious. First of all, the staff is not friendly. It took a bit to get the attention of someone to sit us at a table at a nearly-empty dining room (it was a weird time between lunch and dinner rush I'm sure). Anyways, the servers were hard to find and when we did, they were not the same as before and we had to stop them to order refills and such. This was the worst part of the visit. The good parts - the decor and overall feel of the place is great. Lots of great decorations with plenty of space (although there was a worker there decorating for Christmas right above us as we ate, but I digress). The food was excellent. The guacamole came... deconstructed? All of the fixings on the plate but you had to mix it your own. So after figuring this out and playing with some of the ingredients, the guacamole was good. Not great, but good. The queso was also good! Now for my plate. Mostly because I can't remember what everyone else ordered but me. The Carnitas platter. Incredible taste. Presented in the clay pot it was cooked in. Perfectly cooked, deliciously tender and juicy. All the fixings it came with were good, but not even necessary. There was so much and even reheated at home, the leftovers were incredible. The place is pricy - but that pork was absolutely worth it.

Yelp
Came here for some after dinner dessert and warm drinks. The service was not the best but their food and tea made up for it. The red velvet cup cake was very moist, not overly sweet and very cute little heart on the top. The atmosphere is also nice, very relaxed coffee house with an industrial twist. Look forward to trying out some more sweets!

Yelp
Perhaps the worst flautas ever. They were very soft. Almost like raw tortillas. The beans also were awful. My corner Mexican restaurant does better. I will not be back.

Yelp
I've been to 3 other El Tiempo's in Houston and this location was by far the worst of them all. The food here is always good, but unfortunately I can only give this location one star because of the terrible experience we had here. I came in with a large group of 20, reservations were made over a week before we came. We knew it would be busy since it was a Saturday so we opted for a 4:30pm dinner reservation. We had a few staggered guests but 90% of our party arrived by around 5pm. As we waited for our party to arrive, we ordered drinks but had to flag down our waiter each time and it took a good 10-15 minutes for drinks to be served. Eventually, upon multiple requests, our waiter finally took our meal orders at 5:45- over an hour after our reservation time. Again, it was like pulling teeth as the waiter only took orders one person/couple at a time and we had to keep requesting for him to take the whole tables' orders at once. The food obviously came out staggered - another disappointment. But the food was tasty nonetheless and this is the only reason why I gave this place one star. The fajitas are amazing and I definitely recommend this! Fast forward to after dinner- food was cleared and so we asked the waiter for all of our checks. Dinner came out about 6:30-7pm. Dessert was ordered and out after dinner as well. At 8pm we started asking for our checks as the waiter was not making any moves....at 8:30 pm we finally started getting our checks....one person/couple at a time! I understand that we are a big group but we made a reservation in hopes the restaurant would be prepared and also voiced our concerns with the manager twice during dinner that our waiter needed help with our table. Unfortunately, the manager was not responsive and offered no help to our poor waiter. The manager brushed us off and seemed unconcerned with us- horrible hospitality and service. After we had all of our checks straightened out and paid for, a few people lingered at the table to chat while the majority left for the night. Our waiter comes back to our table 30 minutes after ALL checks are paid for and informs us that 2 people failed to pay their complete check. After calling those 2 people, who informed us that they paid, the waiter admits that he FORGOT to add certain items onto their check...so now we were left to pay for the $75 worth of "items" he claimed were not paid. In my opinion, that's the establishment's problem they forgot, not ours. But we are not about to run away and skip out on a check, so what else could we do. Overall, don't come here. The management is horrible, they don't support their staff, service is poor and slow, and also make sure to double confirm your check to make sure they charged your correctly!!! So sad this El Tiempo location scammed us out of extra money for THEIR faulty, messy, poor service. Makes me not want to frequent any other locations because of this.
