I've put off trying El Tiempo restaurants for years, mainly because I was skeptical about whether the new Laurenzo family-connected brand could top the original Ninfa's restaurants or even long gone faves like Felix and the original Doneraki's. So, as a native Houstonian, I guess you could say I am a really, really tough customer. That said, I decided to come to the Navigation location for my birthday. I certainly enjoyed my experience here. However, I think if you are looking for an iteration that harkens back to the spirit and excellence of the old Ninfa's before the ownership changes and El Tiempo spinoff, this pales in comparison.
The food here is really good flavor-wise and visually speaking, the presentation is also memorable. The guac here is basically deconstructed. Atop mashed avocado sit a few additional ingredients: minced garlic, onion, tomato and jalapeno. I'm not a fan of this style, but I get it. And I've been to restaurants where the guac, for the same price, was prepared table side. You're also supposed to get flour tortilla chips, but we only got these when it was time to go. The waiter didn't understand this comes with the guac. The frijoles a la charra had a really good flavor that was well developed, but the serving was kind of skimpy. The rice was a tad on the dry side, and you don't get much rice either. My favorite part of the meal was actually the tacos. One (beef) taco al carbon and a chicken fajita taco. The al carbon was missing the OG Ninfa's smoke/grill flavor and the chicken was lightly seasoned. I would have liked for the dish to have been served warmer but can say I still really liked it. The salsas (especially verde) and strawberry margarita were great.
Service-wise, I thought the service was not attentive enough, but it was good enough that I skipped giving a complaint. Since this was a birthday dinner for me, the positive, festive spirits of the day carried the dinner for me. I loved the mango and strawberry tres leches cake and the impromptu birthday mariachi serenade.
