"Get your fill at this Chula Vista truck specializing in the art of Mexico’s rich, meaty birria. While the traditional birria tacos are always a hit, the crispy quesatacos are also quite flavorful. Uninitiated to birria? A sampler includes a taco, quesataco and mulita so you can explore the many ways of the birria world." - Mario A. Cortez, Candice Woo

"Operating out of a food truck on the corner of Hilltop and Main, El Tio Pepe’s first outpost north of the border delivers a faithful recreation of the torta ahogada — bolillo salado rolls stuffed with carnitas and soaked in a chile de arbol and sauce— which has made Pepe Plascencia’s Tijuana and Rosarito outlets a hit. Other items include tacos and quesadillas loaded with the same carnitas packed into tortas and piping-hot birria." - Mario A. Cortez

"Tijuana-based chain El Tio Pepe is now serving its signature tortas ahogadas — crusty rolls stuffed with carnitas and bathed in a sauce of chile de arbol and oregano — out of its new food truck at 3740 Main Street in Chula Vista. Operating Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the truck also offers fried potato tacos and a special carnitas quesadilla. Known in Tijuana for their homestyle touch and for flying in their preferred pan salado from Guadalajara, where the torta ahogada originated, the El Tio Pepe chain has been in business since 1993 and quickly became a hit, leading to the eventual opening of three more outposts south of the border. According to Chula Vista manager Juan Orozco, owner Jose “Pepe” Plascencia, whose likeness is on the side of the bright yellow truck, had his eye on the San Diego market for some time, but it was continued requests from diners visiting from north of the border that finally led the chain to expand into San Diego County. While operations aboard the truck are still in their infancy, there are already plans to add items to the scaled-down menu; planned additions from the full Tijuana menu include birria, beef dishes, and desserts such as flan and rice pudding. Orozco also says there are plans to open up a permanent outlet in San Diego in the relatively near future." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
More like 4.5... we ordered the torta ahogada which was flavorful and hefty but waaaaay to soggy. We also ordered 2 soft and 2 crunchy birria tacos which were really good. Fast friendly service and clean atmosphere. Cilantro, cebollas, limes and salsa were also included.

Google
Had 2 Tacos Dorados de Birria and a "soft" Taco de birria both very good but I will say the Taco Dorado is the way to go. Delicious and and the right amount of crunch. Will definitely be back to try the tortas next time. I will update this review with my torta review next time I go with more pictures.

Google
First time here. Torta ahoganda was soggy and full of salsa as it should be. Might need a bit of more seasoning to the salsas, but overall good. Jericallas were great! Had to eat 2. Crispy birria tacos were good, Full of birria. Missing my consome with the tacos. I'll be back!

Google
Just as good as TJ col. Marron place, a bit pricier though. This place relying heavily on word of mouth and established customers.

Google
Not really what I was expecting tortas are a bit small in particular my torta was kinda short on meat. The canelo tacos on the other hand I heard from my kids that they were really good they looked pretty decent.

The service was just ok and the food was not good. I hope I don't get sick.

Yelp
My wife's family is from Guadalajara and we visit them twice a year, these Tortas are the closest you can get to a torta ahogada in Guadalajara. This little food truck does it right. The carinitas and the sauce are spot on. The bread, which is just as important, if not more so than the meat, is the perfect texture for a torta ahogada; it absorbs the salsa and still retains a crunch. We come here any time we have a craving for Tortas ahogadas. Can't comment on the birria because it's not what we come here for. Tio Pepe's is on my recommendation list.

Yelp
OH MY GOD!!!!! These tortas ahogadas are THE BEST!!!! I went there today, the service was really good. Outdoor seating, fast food, and the price was not expensive at all!!!! 1000% recommended.

Yelp
Came here based on a recommendation from a Lyft driver. It is a big yellow food truck located On Broadway in a little parking lot. They have a covered eating area. It wasn't too busy on a Wednesday, and everything looked pretty clean. I ordered a torta Ahogada (sandwich with pork carnitas and a tomato salsa) and a taco dorado de papa con carne de puerco. Both were delicious. I've never had the torta before but the meat was tender. You absolutely must dip or soak the sandwich as the bread is meant to be hard and you want to both soften the bread and infuse it with flavor. I'll definitely come here again to try the other menu items.

Yelp
Ordered a torta de birria de res and it was super SALTY. I had to toss the whole torta away because it was not edible at all

Yelp
The food is amazing and delicious. I recommend El Tio Pepe's food truck if you're traveling to Chula Vista here in Broadway..

Yelp
The food is not good at all. The service was just ok. I didn't finish my food, and I'm praying that I don't get sick. First and last time here.

Yelp
I stopped by El Tio Pepe Food Truck on a late Sunday morning for lunch. I found the "Taco Terrible" on the menu to be intriguing, so I went that route. After ordering, I chatted with the owner and learned that the food that is served here are common street foods one would find in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico. The Taco Terrible was an interesting and tasty large taco. Well, the use a regular sized corn tortilla, but they put an enormous amount of ingredients on top of it. The taco was leveled with melted white cheese on the bottom, a heaping pile of chopped pork that had been seared and charred on one side, and then avocado slices are place a top of that. I was also give some pico de gall, hot sauce, and lime wedges to add to the taco. Other than the pork meat needing a little salt, it was a tasty eating event indeed. The cheese was melted throughout, and the pork meat, underneath the crispy charring, was tender. Oh yes, they do put a lot of pork meat on the taco. The avocado was perfectly ripe and added great flavor to the taco, the pico was just fine, and the hot sauce was tasty and offered a mild to medium heat. Customer service was very good, and I would suggest a little salt on that pork.

Yelp
LOVE the tortas here..they really DO remind me of the Guadalajara traditional ones! Nuff said!!!! That was all I tried here so can't comment on anything else. Had them to go and they were all well packed.. no complaints here! Definitively give them a try!!!

Yelp
We first learned of El Tío Pepe through the show Pati's Kitchen on KPBS. She visited the original restaurant in Tijuana and they showed how a Torta Ahogada is made there, and it looked really delicious. Because of the various problems at the border at the moment, a trip to the restaurant is out, so on a whim I checked yelp for any joy on this side of the border. That is how I found this highly rated rated food truck. Located on Broadway in a parking lot, it is instantly recognizable from the street (see photo). Parking is ample and they have three tables under tarps so you can sit down when you eat your Torta Ahogada (see photo). Ordering is done at the truck and the service is pretty fast. It turns out that the man managing the food truck is the son in law of Tío Pepe. A really nice guy who was more than happy to describe their food (see photo). You don't want to do this standing up. Of course I ordered a Torta Ahogada which I shall now describe. Take a Mexican style sub roll, cut it open, insert mass quantities of carnitas and then drown it in sauce. Two types of sauce are available, hot and not so hot. I went for not so hot, which still had apmle kick. When I got the sandwich it was swimming in sauce. By the time I was almost finished the bread had soaked up all the sauce. The taste is amazing, the meat is juicy and crunchy at the same time. The sauce is complex in taste, hot salty, savory and rich in taste. That in combination with the crunchy and soaked bread makes for a wonderful combination. I found it impossible to eat with my hands without making a big mess, so I ate with a fork and knife. Outstanding! My three fellow diners ordered Carnitas Tacos, Tacos de Birria and Taco Canelo. Everybody loved the food. With water and soft drinks the bill came to $38.00. Highly recommended. We shall return!

Yelp
Hell yes!!! Their Torta Ahogada is insanely good!! The sauce poured over it is insanely hot and gets soaked up by the bread. I just ate it with a fork, the salsa you add on top of the whole thing is also very good. I'm surprised at the lack of reviews, but it is work that it. We also got a crispy potato taco with pork excelente!! Give them a try!! By the way, don't try to dip the Torta in the juice if you take it home, it's not meant to be eaten like that. You get a bowl, drown the Torta in the juice. You'll fall in love!!!

Yelp
Soy de zapopan y la neta si están bien buenas! El birote salado chingon, y la salsa ni se diga!

Yelp
Went yesterday to the 975 address expecting to find a different black truck specializing in tortas ahogadas and found this shiny yellow one instead. Apparently these are the new guys on the block so I figured I'd give it a try. Fair or not I'm comparing it to the truck they replaced. The pork was plentiful, tasty, melt in your mouth good. Arguably the pork was better than its predecessor. The sauce was good. Flavorful and the right level spice. I'd put this a notch below the predecessor. Then the bread..... that was truly what made the predecessor legendary. El Tio's was all sorts of wrong. The bread soaked up the sauce so there was none left for the 2nd half of the sandwich. The bread fell apart while picking up the first half. Both halves had to be eaten with a spoon. The bread needs to be able to withstand the sauce to the last bite and remain a sandwich to the end. Get better bread and I'll return. Also please pickle the red onions, raw onions on this sandwich is just kinda lazy.

Yelp
If you've never tried an authentic Guadalajara torta ahogada, this is the best place to try it! Even though the tortas are great they also offer a variety of carnita tacos with grilled cheese on the top. The Carnitas have good flavor. Must try!

Yelp
Quick, reasonably priced, and delicious. The yellow truck is easy to find and the guys are friendly. Great service. Definitely worth a drive for me from Central SD.

Yelp
Best tortas ahogadas outside of Jalisco!!! Super friendly service and when you ask for spicy it's SPICY!!

Indra G.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I wanted to get a quick bite so we stopped here and it was the worse mistake. We paid $22 for 2 tortas de birria and those tortas were ahogadas and they were so SALTY and nasty. I am a big birria fan and have had birria since I was a child (not California birria but real Mexican birria) but this was not it. Over all, if you know what birria should taste like, do not try this place or you will be disappointed.

Maria D.

Yelp
Como las tortas en Jalisco!!!! Estuve busque y busque tortas como las de Guadalajara y por fin las encontre!

Victor S.

Yelp
Found this spot by chance, great service, quick, and undoubtedly delicious. Get the tortas ahogadas, they're fantastic.
