Where to Go Eat in Chula Vista | Eater San Diego

"Operating out of a food truck on the corner of Hilltop and Main, El Tio Pepe’s first outpost north of the border delivers a faithful recreation of the torta ahogada — bolillo salado rolls stuffed with carnitas and soaked in a chile de arbol and sauce— which has made Pepe Plascencia’s Tijuana and Rosarito outlets a hit. Other items include tacos and quesadillas loaded with the same carnitas packed into tortas and piping-hot birria." - Mario A. Cortez

Came here for the first time and left very impressed, staff was helpful and friendly and even gave me a free shot of tequila to try. Food was very good as I had the torta and tacos. Atmosphere was great and place was lively. Would definitely be back again.

I was surprised at the quality and taste of the food here. It was so good! My favorite was the chicharrones that went very well with the guac. Taco de birria de res was also good. It was my first time to try the torta ahogada and it was easily my favorite! Overall, good food and the service was great!

Google
Great tacos. The doraditos de birria are their typical ones, I had carnitas too and they were really good too. Horchata and coffee come in big cups so probably you can share 1 between 2 people. It does get really busy early on the weekend since people come here after drinking (or hungover)

Google

Google
Delicious tortas ahogadas, juicy, tasty, and portion was perfect. Hubby ordered the full size torta medium heat and I went with half a torta also medium heat. Prices are perfect, but if you are not a local you wouldn't even know this place exists as it is very hidden, we found out about it through a TV cooking show we were watching so we decided to look for it when we came to visit my parents to Tijuana and let me tell you, we WILL be coming back for more. The restaurant itself can use a little TLC and the staff can be a little bit friendlier but I guess you cant have it all.

Google
I always come here for the torta ahogada.

Yelp
This is one of my most favorite taco spots in TJ. The service is insanely fast and the food is consistently good. I love the carnitas tacos dorados - crunchy tacos filled with potato, laid in a gloriously delicious broth and then topped with some of the best pork carnitas you'll ever have. You'll want to eat them quick so they don't get too soggy, but believe me, you'll want to eat them fast anyways. They're so good! Another fave is the birria tacos dorados. These are crunchy tacos filled with very flavorful birria meat. These are served dry, so I like to dip them in the broth from the carnitas tacos and smother it in the ahogada hot sauce. Speaking of hot sauce, you'll get a few salsa options as well as tray of toppings complete with onions, cilantro, pico de gallo and lime. If they don't bring them out right away, definitely ask for the pickled carrots - they're BOMB. For drinks we always go with the caguamas and clamato, but did you know they also make their own tequila?! It's pretty good, actually! There are a few locations in town and now even a location in San Diego, as well as a food truck! It makes sense they would keep growing - their food really is THAT good!

Yelp
Las mejores carnitas de puerco de Tijuana. Es un restaurante modesto pero supera en calidad a todos por la calidad de sus platillos. Aparte de las carnitas tienen unos tacos de birria dorados que son una delicia.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!! First time visiting, I had tacos de birria, my husband had a torta ahogada and my children had tacos de chorizo. Literally the only downfall of this restaurant is that the menu doesn't have pictures, because every time the waiters walked by, the dishes they where carrying looked delicious, and I had to keep asking what it was.

Yelp
Tio Pepe, I love you. Lightning fast, friendly service. A condiment bar delivered to your table along with radishes (yea!) and pickled carrots (ate a ton, no shame). AMAZING salsa verde! I was in TJ for work and those in the know brought me here. Tio Pepe's is definitely not on the tourist track but worth your while. Whatever you order, it will be tasty! We ordered a ton of tacos - know that these bad boys are generously filled, and served on fresh corn tortillas! I tried the birra (if you don't get one you're a chump), the chorizo (not oily, very tasty) and the G.O.A.T carnitas complete with tasty little crunchy bits. I'm told that there is a special off menu "caviar" taco of just those amazing crunchy bits. I love tacos. I love Tio Pepe's. It was everything I wanted in a TJ lunch and more. Except for their watery horchata, skip that. Realize your taco dreams here.

Yelp
The outside doesn't inspire confidence, but the warm welcoming servers and delicious food will bring me back. All locals except us, good prices, can't wait to go back and try other dishes.

Yelp
This restaurant was featured in "Pati's Mexican Table" TV show season 7 episode 2. I found Her show on my Firestick TV. Looking forward to trying it out.

Yelp
Me and my wife were in T.J for the day and we were starving. My wife yelped "Tacos de Birria" and found this place near the location we were visiting. I ordered two tacos(dorados), two soft tacos, and two one consomes(broth). When they brought out our food the broth was swimming with fat that I had to scoop out. The tacos were also full of fat and the meat didn't have much flavor. To top it off there was a cat roaming around inside the restaurant without a care. And my wife saw a roach under one of the tables. Good luck if you try eating at this place, You're better off eating tacos from a street cart vendor.

Yelp
Stopped by here for my birthday. And I was thankful that I did. The food was delicious. We ordered 10 tacos and I could easily finish another 5. If you planning to come here make sure you know how to speak some Spanish or have a google translator, it was funny trying to order food when they don't speak any English. We used the google translator for the whole menu and just pointed what we wanted and how many hahahaha. But its an awesome place to come, few tvs played the real football "soccer".

Yelp
Great food, fast service. Even Uber is quick. They have a verity of pork meats and there all delicious. This place is highly recommended.

Yelp
Hola!!! So, I came here cuz my über driver recommended this spot to me. I was told that they sauce was a 10/10 on the spice level. Sad to say, it was not hot at all. I ordered their traditional torta, which came with rock hard bread. I'm currently writing this from my Dentists office so thanks. Although the ambiance was nice and the service was great, I was not impressed with the food. Thanks for nothing Mr. Uber sir! Will not be cumming back. Although I hear the birria is good.

Yelp
My favorite tacos in Tijuana. I don't get to my favorite in Mexico City often enough, but these are almost as good. And much closer to home. Sit at the bar and order straight from the cook. Kind of like a Mexican style Sushi bar. Sitting at the table is OK, but if you want your tacos hot off the grill, the bar is the best.

Yelp
Not my absolute favorite TJ taco place, but it may be in the Top 5 (for right now, as I'm always finding new places). This place is hidden in a residential neighborhood and parking can be touch and go. This is similar to Taconazo, but it's the carnitas that everyone comes here for. I had the "mixed" version. Owned by a TJPD guy so you'll normally be sitting next to a group of cops. Micheladas flow freely. They're big, cold, tasty and priced right. Another tasty treat if carnitas aren't your thing is the fried birria taco (doradito). THAT is a dang good tacito. Recommended.

Yelp
Been coming in here since it was just a carniceria and tienda de abarrotes with some bull horns hangin in the front Great tacos

Yelp
Was referred to this place, I will not say by who since it wasn't anything like what they described. I did not enjoy my Buche taco ... At All.. one of the salsas was spoiled. I was very disappointed. They're going to open a lunch truck in Chula Vista soon.. I hope it's better than this place.. I will stick to my carnitas spot in Chula Vista for now..

Yelp
The hotel where my husband and I stayed recommend this place I'm sad to say I we were not impressed :( Birria was salty not good at all.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite Birria spot in TJ. So much so that I recently walked across the border by myself to have it, I normally drive down with friends. I love there micheladas with clamato. I have tried there tortas and a variety of there tacos but its the birria that keeps me coming back.

Yelp
Great tacos! Birria, Carnitas are the bomb. You can hang out and watch a futbol (Soccer) game, drink beer and eat delicious Mexican tacos. The main dish/best seller are "Tortas Ahogadas", this is a very typical dish from Jalisco, they can be very spicy though, so watch out.

C P.

Yelp
Horrible. Not fresh. Torta tomato sauce was rancid. Nice server and good service. Just not good food.

Brad G.

Yelp
This is the best Birria in Rosarito! We walked in and Eric was very accommodating! We got a table inside! We started out with an order Birria that we shared. Many toppings and salsas to add. We tried everything! We also ordered the papa taco! It was delicious! After we ate, we talked with Eric and Jose about the History of Tio Pepe's. We had a great time!
