18 Essential Restaurants in Charlotte, North Carolina

"When Plaza Midwood brewery Resident Culture expanded to a cavernous space in South End, it found space for chef Hector González-Mora, whose breakfast taqueria had already attracted a following. González-Mora has thrived, and now El Toro Bruto has a full menu, from breakfast to lunch to dinner. It’s the kind of thoughtful Mexican cuisine that’s taken a while to find a home in Charlotte. Yes, there are classic tacos, but there are short ribs in green tomatillo broth, tamarind-glazed fish, and mole, too." - Timothy DePeugh, Kathleen Purvis

I loved them when they were Chilito and they've only gotten better since opening a permanent location. My husband and I came for breakfast and shared: - Bistec and Barbacoa Breakfast Tacos - Chorizo Kotlette - Mushroom Toast The breakfast tacos were great as expected. It was the Chorizo Kotlette and the Mushroom Toast that impressed me the most. I think the Chorizo Kotlette is the best breakfast sandwich in Charlotte. I need to come back to try their dinner/lunch selection too!

Reserved a spot here 2 weeks ago and the ambience was pretty good. We ordered the fries, beer and al pastor and pollo tacos. I felt the tacos could have been more tasty. The flavor was bland. It was our first time here so not sure if this is how it is. We really liked the service. The hostess was helpful, friendly and attentive.

To begin with if this is your first time it may take you a second to realize that El Toro Bruto is actually in the back half of Resident Culture. Service was awkward at best because originally I wanted to just eat at the bar (resident culture) but what I wanted was only available at El Toro so I had to go back there and the hostess was awkward. Asked to sit at the bar back there she had to go ask because she didn't even know if I was allowed to... I was told I couldn't sit at the bar restaurant side so I was seated at a table. Told em I just wanted to order something to take to the bar... They still brought everything for dine in, so had to package the food myself no biggie. My issue was the fact that those little ceviche tostadas were like $20?! In my opinion this place is highly overrated and overpriced. Service was subpar. The food was pretty good for what it's worth but most definitely not worth what they're charging. I think resident culture has better food at a much more reasonable price, not to mention much better service from the bartenders.

Google
Fantastic food! We had the Bruto taco with carne asada with guacamole and the bacon wrapped cheesy peppers (yum!). We also had two tacos - one with chicken and the other with barbacoa. I could have bathed in the barbacoa it was so so tasty. The side of roasted corn salad was delicious, the chips were fantastically cooked and not overly fried or too salty. The atmosphere is great and the portions were plenty big!

Went to an amazing multi-course meal event for Juneteenth with Chef Santana. Environment, food, entertainment, the entire event was elegant and filled with culture, history and some dope figures in the community. I meet journalists, the NC PROJECT Space fam, Maetres from Brazil, just a plethora of good ppl. Loved the space. Santana is a brilliant chef. A true experience worth having again.

Stopped in for lunch - the tacos and staff are amazing! Had carne asada and chorizo tacos, and both were killer! Definitely stop in if you're in South End.

Google
I ordered the carne asada bruto and the al pastor taco, and my friend also let me try his carnitas taco and the carne asada taco. The carne asada in both the bruto and the taco were both amazingly tender and me and my friends favorite. Strongly recommend the bruto and get it all the way! It was super flavorful and they “burnt” the cheese on the inside of the flour tortilla so despite all the ingredients in the inside, the tortilla never gets soggy, GENIUS & delicious. 4 stars because the Al pastor was by far the worst. Pork was cooked well but not flavorful like al pastor normally is. $11 for guacamole is a far stretch for just ok guac and the queso was also just ok.

Google
I loved Chillitos breakfast tacos so I was so excited when El Toro Bruto added them back with their morning menu. The bistec (steak) breakfast taco is everything! Online ordering was easy. Was also able to order a matcha latte from Killer Coffee on the same platform which was convenient. If you’re wondering, both El Toro Bruto and Killer Coffee can be found inside Resident Culture Southend.

Yelp
My experience at El Toro Bruto was a true delight, with standout tacos and exceptional service. The tacos at El Toro Bruto were truly a highlight of the meal - delicious, flavorful, and made with high-quality ingredients. Each bite was a burst of authentic Mexican flavors that left me craving more. One of the standout aspects of my visit was the owner of the restaurant. Not only was he incredibly friendly and welcoming, but he also displayed a deep knowledge and passion for the cuisine. His personal touch was evident when he brought us a complimentary plate of nachos with salsa, adding an extra layer of hospitality to our dining experience. Inside of Resident Culture which makes this even better. Lighting is great, music is good, staff is friendly.

Yelp
I took advantage of their Taco Tuesday deal, two tacos and a beer for $10. I ordered one barbacoa taco, one al pastor taco, and a Resident Culture IPA. The tacos were a good portion and tasty. The deal is well worth it and will come back to try their other menu items.

Yelp
Quick service, decent size for the price. Honestly the taste is 5/5, price would be 3/5, so I'm giving a 4. Nachos were great. One of the only times I've gotten a ton of queso. Grilled chicken for the protein. Plentiful toppings, and something gave it a sweet taste. Maybe it was the salsa? Would definitely recommend if you're a fan of nachos.

Yelp
I wish I could give them 10 stars. This place never misses. Their tacos are really good, but today decided to go with the ceviche and pork belly. They were so good. The ceviche was fresh and just the right amount of acidity. The pork belly - well, I asked for extra sauce when I saw there were tortillas underneath. So I made some tacos. AMAZING! the drinks were good, my fav was la esquina. Service - great. She was so nice and the ambiance - it's always a pasty there.

Yelp
I think it's funny when companies only offer card purchases. Laziness on management creates opportunities for money to be stolen from tipped industry employees and also prevents clients from purchasing your services. Menu and food is definitely something you would see in Southend - gentrified and over priced. If you're looking for Mexican or tacos this isn't it.

Yelp
Got the al pastor and steak tacos and a sour beer. The sour I had was the best sour I have had in my whole life. The tacos on the other hand were lacking flavor and the meat was extremely dry. We had to go find out waitress to ask for hot sauce to make it taste better but again, nothing special. Great atmosphere and good vibes with live music. But, if you want just good tacos and authentic Mexican food, steer elsewhere. If you are there to drink, listen to music, hang out at the bar, and have sone snacks: great option!

Yelp
In case you have not heard - the tacos from El Toro Bruto are insanely good. So good in fact, that I had them Saturday and came back yesterday because I was thinking about them all week and just wanted to reconfirm with my taste buds that they were still insanely good! It was also important for me to tell you all that I can confirm they taste just as good sober as they do after a few drinks. Don't @ me but I daresay best tacos I've ever had in Charlotte and I love that they are inside Resident Culture in South End in such a dope space! Anyway, back to the tacos - we got the: Anytime Tacos Al Pastor Carne Asada Barbacoa And the: "Dilla" Tacos (a cross between a quesadilla/taco with melty cheese!) Dilla Barbacoa Dilla Asada As you can see from the photos - they definitely do not skimp AT ALL on the meat portions! The "Dilla" tacos come with flour tortillas and the Anytime Tacos come standard with corn tortillas but you can upgrade to a flour one if you want! One taco style we did not get was the Taco Bruto which is a taco as big as a burrito. I'm coming back for that one next! -@feisty.eats

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! We loved this business when it did breakfast tacos under the name of Chilitos and have been excited to support Chef Hector's new venture. We shared the chips and guacamole, which were both great. I went with the carne asada taco and the barbacoa bruto. My husband opted for the barbacoa taco and lengua dilla taco. We both loved everything that we ordered. Every item was fresh and had amazing flavor. We received great service and ordering via our phone was easy. We will definitely be back and hope that breakfast tacos will be added to the menu in the future.

Yelp
Came to check it out only to find out it's been closed since Dec 2023.. just a heads up for ppl who aren't from Charlotte. It's Resident Culture X now.

Yelp
I am not easy to please when it comes to tacos. I've tried quite a few since moving here and for the most part, haven't really found anything worth having more than once. That is until NOW. I think these tacos are absolutely delicious. They are packed with a flavor punch so no need to try to drown these in condiments. I first had the breakfast tacos last week at a pop up. They were phenomenal and I wanted to try more. The main menu of tacos does not disappoint. I cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
The place has multiple places in it a bit confusing. The food was good but for price I can go somewhere else.

Yelp
Haven't had breakfast burritos this good since I left TX. Barbacoa is legit! Chorizo was also good. Look forward to trying the bistec on my next visit.

Yelp
The tacos here would warrant their own 5 star review. Hands down the best I've had in Charlotte. But that's not why I'm writing this review. Tex-mex breakfast is hard to mess up. Give me a standard breakfast burrito and I'll be happy any day. It wasn't until I had the breakfast tacos at El Toro Bruto that I realized there was a class far above the other tex-mex breakfast spots around town. This place takes it to another level. I think the tortilla really puts it over the top, but there's not a single piece of these tacos that isn't 10/10. Bacon is my favorite, but go ahead and try all of them. Hands down the most underrated meal in south end. Please, for the love of God, get to El Toto Bruto for a breakfast taco. You will not regret it.

Yelp
Didn't have chicken, "couldnt refund for not having it"...and then ordered a kids quesadilla and they put mushrooms in it and then remade it with just cheese (as ordered) and the cheese wasn't even melted..terrible. Everything was terrible especially for the cost.

Yelp
I love the idea of self serve, it makes it a bit more convenient! You walk in, seat yourself, scan the QR code, and order from your phone! No need to speak to a server! The food was very good! We tried each one; a bruto, dilla, and anytime taco. The bruto comes with chips and we also ordered the chips and salsa. The tacos were very flavorful and tasty, however, my boyfriend and I found the chips and salsa way too salty. The amount they give you is great but maybe lessen the salt on the chips because it wasn't very enjoyable.

Yelp
Great food. The pork belly en salsa verde was delicious as well as the short rib and tacos. The food is a little pricey but definitely worth it.

Yelp
So, I did a review for Chilitos and made it clear that they had my favorite tacos. So now that they are El Toro Bruto and have moved from breakfast tacos to lunch and dinner, they are still my favorite tacos. I had the lengua taco and it was my favorite one I had. The flavor was rich and the texture was tender. I also had the barbacoa taco. It is the best barbacoa I have had. It wasn't as tender as the lengua. I think the partnership of El Toro Bruto and Resident Culture is a good one. Tacos go well with beer. Both businesses bring great tasting options to pair. I also really like their guac and chips. my wife got the Bruto. It is large and satisfying. There are also some additions to add to your tacos (like a cheesy pepper). Overall, I highly recommend for the beer lover, the taco lover, or just the food lover.

Yelp
It's my first time trying Toro Bruto and it will most likely be my last. This was one of the most terrible meals I e had in a long time. It was supposed to be Shrimp Dorado's aka taquitos, as you can see by the photos they were not taquitos. The double shell was so greasy that oil was literally dripping off the thing. It was overcooked so much that two hands were needed to break the shells into pieces. The "shrimp" was a mashed up rubber mess and the edges of this shrimp paste thing we're as brown as cola, it actually bounced when I tossed it on the table. It had a chew like gum!! The "zesty tomato sauce" was a watery cup of flavorless goop. The "seasoned rice" was tasty but really it was just buttered rice with chopped onion & tomato on the top, so not so much seasoning and the avocado was fresh, ironic considering how quickly avocado turns brown. It's a pretty sad experience with this food and it made me very sad and very hungry since I had no alternate lunch items.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast tacos and I loved it! Coming from Texas, it's so hard to find breakfast tacos anywhere outside of the state - this satisfied my cravings! Loved the salsas too - wonderful flavor. Looking forward to trying the other tacos they have.

Yelp
Let me preface that I loved Chilito's breakfast tacos when they had their pop ups at Resident Culture in Plaza Midwood. I wanted a quick snack and ordered the chips & queso, thinking I'd order a few tacos, too. I like the ordering system where you order from a QR code & don't have to interact with anyone lol. Unfortunately, the queso was not good. It tasted like alfredo sauce with raw flour. I will say it was a generous serving but we didn't finish half of it. The tables around me were eating tacos & they looked like a wet mess, leaking excessive fluid when being picked up, so I decided to end my visit without trying the tacos. I will definitely be back for another try but hope the owners/chef see this information and adjust the queso recipe and address the soggy taco situation.

Yelp
This place has some great tacos. Came here in the morning the other day for coffee and decided to try. They are more like mini burritos and 2 of them is more than enough. Maybe a little more on the pricey side but we'll worth it. There are a few other places in the street worth wandering to as the area has been updated. Coffee is pretty great at stall next door as well.
google avatar

Nick I.

Yelp
Backed by a great environment of Resident Culture brewery I thought these tacos kinda felt flat. The flavor between the two tacos I got were basically indistinguishable. Furthermore, the cost/value of the tacos when you compare to other local spots seems way off. The dilla taco was over cheesed without seemingly good cheese flavor. The larger taco brutos had a good crisp, but came in at a hefty cost. If you're looking for a handheld that makes your hands look large, then the anytime taco is for you. Overall, it feels like this former popup shop needs a little more variety to be a mainstay. I hope it does, the location paired with the environment can't be beaten.

Yelp
It was a Tuesday so of course we were on the hunt for some tacos. After looking at a couple of Places we decided on Toro Bruto, and I feel like it was a great choice. Located inside of a brewery and sharing a parking space with the bowling alley next door, Toro Bruto is in a great location with options of entertainment. The location inside is huge, since they are sharing the space with the brewery, there is more than ample room to host a few hundred people. All the decor was fun and modern with a bit of an artsy twist. Shout out to the huge disco ball by the restrooms for setting the only vibe. The service was great. They have a QR system which takes you to their platform where you can order food and drinks from there and also close out your account all in a few clicks. Drinks were probably out. Minute after finalizing my order followed by my food a few minutes later. Talk about quick and efficient. Granted it was a slower night but I would not let that take away from the great service. They had a great deal for Taco Tuesday that was two tacos and a beer from their brewed in house selection. We all hopped on that deal and after finishing our tacos, just started to order a bit of everything else a la crate. Would come back anytime I'm in town.

Yelp
Recent SoCal transplant here that has been searching for good tacos for the last 6 months. These tacos are by far the best tacos in Charlotte proper and the closest I'be gotten to that LA taste! They even have nopale and lengua tacos! I've been here multiple times and they do not disappoint.

Yelp
Every single thing ive eaten there has been amazing. From breakfast tAcos to guac everything has been above and beyond. These are my favorite tacos AND theyre inside one of my favorite breweries. Super cool vibes!!!!!!! Love love love el toro bruto and rc

Yelp
I tried El Toro Bruto for the first time today and seeing several reviews of it on social media and it did not disappoint. From the moment we walked in to leaving we were greeted with smiling faces who were more than happy to show us where the taco bar was. While ordering, the cashier highly recommended the sweet potatoes as a side. So of course I tried them. The combination of sweet and spicy was delicious. I also got the carne asada tacos brutos. Delicious as well. At the end, the server that took our plates asked how everything was and informed that they worked really hard on the new menu and were open to feedback. I don't think I've ever had a server ask for feedback. Overall great experience and we will be back.
