The first Mexican restaurant in Toronto apparently. Actual Mexican food not made by some bros or marketing firm with crazy flavours. It's also pretty cost-effective.

The first places I am going to eat at when Toronto opens up
El Trompo

Located in Kensington Market on Augusta Avenue, El Trompo offers a vibrant dining experience with both indoor and outdoor seating options. A highlight of the visit was the solo Spanish musician singing outside and the delicious tacos! During our visit, we ordered the Horchata and Jamaica for drinks which paired very well with the tacos. For starters, we ordered the Pico de Gallo, which was seasoned very well and had a perfectly light kick of jalapeño. The tacos did not come with garnish, and the leftover Pico de Gallo helped add to some of the ordered tacos, which included Lengua, Cochinita Pibil, and Al Pastor. The taco portion sizes are considered fairly priced, with five small tacos available for around $15, depending on the dish choice. The Lengua (beef tongue) was unexpectedly our favourite, with the texture and seasoning. The Al Pastor, which was their famous popular choice, lived up to its fame with its flavorful marinated pork and the addition of pineapple, which was refreshing. Do note, the Pescado (white fish) is not priced the same as the 5 pieces and is actually priced per 1 piece. At a later visit, we ordered the Pescado (3 pieces); it was good, fresh and came with cabbage, pico de gallo and chipotle aioli. The outdoor area accommodates approximately 20 to 25 patrons, featuring 14 tables for two, while the indoor space can seat around 25 to 30 guests. The bathroom is located downstairs. Service at El Trompo was great, with staff frequently checking in to ensure we were cared for. They accept credit card payments and use a handheld device for both order taking and bill payment.

Service was good. We had the trompo el pastor tacos and the chilaquiles with beef. Both were good, nothing extraordinary. We sat outside on the patio and unfortunately had to swat away yellow jackets, but the weather was great. 🐝 The mariachi singer started about 1:20pm as we were getting ready to leave, so it was quiet to start and then got to loud to talk.

We hired their food truck for our wedding late night snack and not only was the food absolutely delicious but the service was amazing as well. We hired them to show up at ten and they showed up an hour early just to make sure everything was running smoothly. They also were very professional and served the food in a timely manner.

The fish taco was really good ,fresh and full of flavor. The beef tongue needed a bit of sauce and lemon, then it turned out great. Chill spot with friendly service and solid tacos overall.

Had lunch at El Trompo in Kensington Market recently. I could have sworn that I was sitting on a street corner in Mexico. Had the guacamole (delicious) and corn chips to start (and share). The fish tacos (I got two) were gluten friendly and some of the best and most authentic tacos I've ever had. The service was attentive. Would definitely return.

We were in Kensington and walked by El Trompo! The tacos come in an order for 5, these are great portions and so flavourful! We would love to come back with a bigger appetite and try more off the menu. Amazing hospitality and service from the team checking in to see if we were good & refilled our water 👀

What a treat to find such authentic Mexican cuisine in Canada. Having lived in Texas for many years and traveled to Mexico, I developed a taste for the food (especially Al pastor). This restaurant is such a treat. The staff is wonderful and friendly. The atmosphere is wonderful and relaxed. Can’t way enough. What a find!!!

My partner and I were visiting Toronto from NYC, and we came across El Trompo when walking around Kensington Market. The menu immediately caught our eye. I recommend their tacos, in particular tacos de cochinita pibil and al pastor. Each order comes with 5 tacos and you can mix your order if you don’t want all to be the same. Their flavor is very authentic and delicious! We also had their agua de jamaica which was so needed and refreshing with the heat we were experiencing. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and our waitress and hostess were very kind! Will certainly come again whenever I’m back in Toronto! ☺️
