"This vibrantly colored Pico Union spot is a Oaxacan restaurant, food market, and panadería all wrapped in one. A casual lunch excursion for some chicken mole or crispy tlayudas might quickly turn into an impulsive buying spree of bitter chocolate, handcrafted pots, and miscellaneous kitchenware that you never knew you needed. This same feeling can be applied to touring El Valle Oaxaqueño’s baked goods section, where tall glass displays are packed to the brim with golden, flakey, and sugar-dusted pan dulce. Oaxacan specialties are a must here, like their pan de yema–a fluffy egg bread best enjoyed with Mexican hot chocolate any time of day. Pan de muerto, typically seasonal, is also sold fresh here and comes as face-sized loaves of sweet bread sprinkled with sesame seeds for a classic touch. Food Rundown Pan De Yema You might think there’s no way you can eat this massive roll in one sitting, but prepare to be proven wrong. These cloud-like pastries are deceivingly light, super eggy, and spiced with anise for a hint of heat and sweetness. The golden-brown crust and sesame seed topping also makes it one of the most beautiful loaves in town, or at least until you rip it to shreds for coffee dunking. Tlayuda Mixta As much as we like the creamy black bean paste slathered all over this crispy tlayuda, it’s the quesillo that coats every inch of this thing that really does it for us. The tasajo beef is tender and salty, the cecina is bright red from its adobo marinade, and the chorizo links are packed with paprika flavor. The smoky salsa roja is a great way to bring some more heat too. Amarillo De Pollo This cacao-less mole is tangy, spicy, and full of citrusy chili flavor, but the sauce could use a tad more salt to make everything pop. The chicken thighs and drumsticks, however, are juicy and tender. Get this to split alongside a tlayuda or two. Taco de Moronga A La Mexicana A large, well-seasoned handmade tortilla filled with smooth refried beans and moronga sausage. This Oaxacana blood sausage is full of sharp metallic flavor, a bit of smokiness, and some subtle heat that helps make the beans pop. Everything comes together with the melted quesillo, which brings even more richness to this burrito-esque taco." - Sylvio Martins

I love that it’s a different variety of food on the menu and it all seemed really authentic and well presented. I got the enchiladas de mole and the sopes. Sopes were very tasty, I especially liked the deep fried shell. Enchiladas de moles had such a unique flavor, I’ve had mole before but mostly as a dipping sauce, so the flavor was a bit overpowering to me as the sauce for the enchiladas. That’s entirely my own taste, I think they were well made for those that know this dish. It was a decent meal, but there’s a lot of competition in Salem that appeals to me more.

So yummy !!!!! We live down the street and wanted to try it out. Best chicken tacos I’ve had in salem ( others in salem usually have no flavor ) Asada was melt in your mouth amazing. Guacamole was subtle but delicious ! Prices are a bit higher for street tacos. $3.00 each but the flavors are super good so it makes up for it. Probably won’t be able to come often but it’s still super good and I’d recommend it to everyone ! 😎

Google
It’s a Oaxaqueño style pizza. Only comes in one size. It’s pretty good I would say when warm.

Yelp
soooo good! i live nearby and finally came in to try it and i'm so glad i did. they give you such a big portion for the price and everything is freshly made. my mom said it reminds her of her hometown in méxico will definitely come again!

Yelp
Delicious homemade Oaxacan dishes at reasonable prices and great portions. This restaurant offers a tasty alternative to traditional Mexican food. I ordered the mole enchiladas which are stuffed with shredded chicken and topped with fresh cheese, onions, and parsley over a sweet and mild authentic mole paste. Paired my dish with a cold agua de chilacayota (fig gourd water). If you're in need of a region specific Mexican dish, check out El Valle Oaxaqueno!

Yelp
Great customer service, amazing food and horchata! Love how they have shelves full of stuff you can purchase like mexican hot chocolate, mole, and masa to take home!

Yelp
We enjoy going to el Valle Oaxaqueno. The food is delicious and variety from usual Mexican food is refreshing and nicely presented. The staff are friendly and helpful. The items for sale are fun to peruse.

Yelp
Stopped by today to try for first time. I'm always looking for good mole. Had the chicken enchiladas with dark mole, rice & beans. The good: Mole was very flavorful. The bad: the chicken in the enchiladas was very dry and chewy. The beans were flavorless, and the rice was dry and cold. I would have mentioned this to staff, but was not asked how the food was. Won't be back.

Yelp
The food was great, tasty and different from Mexican food were used to. The service was wonderful the gentleman at the register answered all our questions about the menu.

Yelp
This is exactly what Salem was missing. There is lots of Mexican restaurants here but not one with authentic Oaxacan food. The food and the service were great. I would really recomend going for the items that you havent seen at other Mexican restaurants like the tlayuda, memelitias, or the molotes

Yelp
Third visit and it's five stars now. I got the cheese empanadas and two tacos. The empanadas were still quite warm when I got home across town which means they were prob nuclear hot when I got them. That always makes me happy. Crisp, chewy and nicely flavored on both the chicken and the cheese ones. Especially good with green sauce. The pastor taco was good, the meat was moist and a little fatty (which I love) there could be more flavor but still solid. The lengua taco was good. Texture, flavor both good.

Yelp
Ordered a couple of burritos, 3 containing meat. Flavor was good but just lacking a sufficient amount of meat per the beans and rice ratio. The red and green sauce were great, red a mouth burner for sure. Got some pastries that were pretty good. The counter service was cordial and helpful. The inside seating was closed for COVID but looked clean and comfortable. Pricing wasn't bad, but like I mentioned the meat component was a bit shy for the pricing. Would like to see more options, like hard shell tacos, enchiladas, breakfast burritos and taco salads... Over a good little place for the neighborhood! Could be a go too once they get the menu squared away and some great specials up and going..

Yelp
Only tried the black bean enchiladas, empanada, and squash blossom quesadilla which were all amazing....we seriously can't wait to try everything else on their menu! So good!!

Yelp
Great, authentic Mexican meal in a comfortable environment! This new place is highly recommended!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch the other day. Had three tacos, nothing else. Was okay, not great. Might try a combo plate if I come back.

Yelp
We got to experience authentic Oaxacan food. We ate tlayuda and enchiladas de mole. Instead of the common mushiness of what we've known as Mexican food, these had more texture and cleaner flavors. I think the tlayuda would be two meals it's so large! The cheese was drier, really unusual but great flavor. And the mole was the best I've eaten and loaded with meat. Lots of chocolate but savory - not sweet of course! Great service!

Carol S.

Yelp
We got the enchiladas de mole to go. They were FABULOUS! Memorably wonderful! The best mole that I've had in years. The flavor of the sauce was so complex, the tortillas were perfect and they were stuffed with a generous amount of chicken that was delicious. The person that helped me with my order on the phone and also gave me my food when I arrived was super friendly and informative. We'll certainly will be going there again soon for to go food. The restaurant itself is super clean and nicely decorated if you'd prefer dine in.
