Best Restaurants and Bars in Vancouver, Washington | Eater Portland

"Eldy Prado serves childhood favorites of fresh fish, seafood, and tacos inspired by his hometown of Jalisco at his food trucks parked next to two of Vancouver’s best breweries — Fortside and Vice Beer. Standouts include mahi mahi tacos and the El Gobernador taco with shrimp, mozzarella cheese, chipotle aioli, and fresh cilantro in a grilled crispy, cheesy tortilla." - Rachel Pinsky

I wanted to like this place. The flavors were pretty good, but execution on some of them were… weak sauce. The sauces (salsas) are watery and tasteless. The tortillas are fresh but undercooked and a little grainy. Then they mask everything with a lot of sauces on the tacos, like chipotle mayo. The oysters in the fried oysters were tiny and overcooked. Tasted okay. The Birria grilled cheese was stuffed, but came out first… and cold?! So were the fries. Sad. What saved them was the fried empanadas, juicy, plump and stuffed and freshly fried to order.

Google
Wow!!! What a great find in east Vancouver (USA). Amazing flavors, menu options, service, and a beer window next door (bonus). Limited outdoor seating but plenty of free parking. Already planning our next trip.

Google
Back again. Ended up trying the El Gobernador. Pretty much shrimp tacos with fried shell, comes with cilantro, a chipotle aïoli and cheese. 10/10 The service is always amazing and I highly recommend it at lunch time!

Google
If you have the option to not eat for hours and leave whatever event they are cantering, go get anything else out in the world then do that. McDonald’s is garbage food and exponentially better than this truck. Absolutely no flavor, chewy and going straight to the trash. Not even a dog should eat this

Google
Looks can be deceiving. I can't remember a time when I have been this disappointed in a plate of street tacos. I ordered one of each: Carne asada, al pastor, and carnitas, and every single one was woefully underseasoned. As in, ZERO flavor. The only reason I am giving this place two stars is because the amount of meat on each taco (plus lots of pineapple on the al pastor) was commendable. That is why I say looks can be deceiving. Plus, each taco was $4. So bummed.

Google
Fresh ingredients. But lacked in flavor We ordered the bierra de res, mahi mahi, rock fish and al pastor tacos. The rock fish was the best.

Google
El Viejon is a quality Mexican food truck. Their ingredients are top-notch. They specialize in fish tacos but they have plenty of beef, pork and chicken as well. I've tried the carne asada, al pastor and quesabirria. I like the latter best. They have three salsa choices: Verde, rojo and habanero. The habanero is rather creamy and not super spicy. I like the roja better. The truck is next door to Vice Beer and they have a relationship with them. You can sit inside the brewery. There's also a nice outside patio. El Viejón is one of the more expensive tacos in VanPort but to be fair, their tacos have more meat than other places that charge less. I've tried their burrito. I like the tacos better. The truck is in a very packed industrial park. Parking can be a challenge during peak hours. Check out my profile for more great eateries in craft cocktail bars. -VanPort Insider✌🏼

Google
Cozy little stomp next to Vice Beer with delicious fried rockfish tacos. Each taco had generous, fresh toppings that made that perfect crunchy fold where your first bite is a beautiful mess- just like you. The seating is outdoors with cute tables but they also welcome you to sit in Vice where there are cozy couches. They welcome dogs so I brought my best nephew in to share in the great vibes. 80's music and AstroTurf with fish tacos stuffed in your face - what else would you even want to do?

Aaron

Yelp
Tacos are fire! We had carne asada and rockfish. Love picking up a bag of tacos and beer at Vice.

Yelp
We have been Woody's fans for years, but they closed, and we gave El Viejon a try. It was great. Extensive menu choices, friendly staff, fast service, and Vice Beer is right next door, so you can grab a cold one to go with your tacos. I tried the carne asada and shredded beef tacos. The steak was great, solid flavor with tasty guacamole, but for me, the birria (shredded beef) was the winner. Juicy, flavorful, and with maybe a hint of cinnamon. My wife tried the shrimp and mahi-mahi, both were excellent. The mozzarella in the shrimp won the day for her. We went on a warm day, 90ºF, but there was adequate shade, and a breeze was blowing. We'll be back for sure.

Yelp
Nah dude. THIS PLACE IS THE FREAKING BOMB!!!!!!!!!!! The fried oyster tacos are AMAZING! My coworkers introduced me to this place and ‍. It's usually the same girl working there and she's so funny and nice, she's a girls girl! ‍ The location is lowkey random but idgaf IMMA KEEP GOIN!!!!!!

Yelp
I've been coming here since this taco truck first opened, and one of my favorite items on the menu has always been the consommé. Unfortunately, this recent visit left me really disappointed and surprised--in a bad way. I ordered two small consommés, but when I got them, I was shocked by how tiny the portions were. I even asked the server if I had actually been charged, because the size was unbelievably small. She told me, "This is our large cup--we just filled it halfway because we ran out of small cups." What? I clearly remember the small consommé being much larger in the past. Paying $3.00 for something so small felt like a rip-off. This is the first time I've ever left a bad review, but I'm genuinely disappointed. Sadly, you won't see me here again.

Yelp
So I went back. Man, I kind of wish I would have rated 4 stars previously, because man my experience was next level. My last meal was great, to the point where I came back, but this was something else. Not sure if it's because i got the Quesabirria this time or if it's because I paired it with a beer from level. Or even if it's because I sat at a table instead of eating in my car. But I'm going to say that extra hot sauce on the Quesabirria, dipped in the Consume was . It also only cost me a little over ten dollars. I'm going to eat this many times. I just ate there and I already want to go back.

Yelp
We came on a holiday Monday and we were so glad they were open. The weather was just nice enough to sit under the tent outside. The food was ready in just a few minutes. I tried a fish taco, a shrimp taco, and a calamari taco. Each was busting with great flavor. These tacos are so flipping good! It was tough to eat all three because they were heaping full! I was so stuffed! Great food, great service!

Yelp
Arrived on New Year's Eve craving tacos and I was SO grateful they were open 11am - 11pm! Crowd was bustling with Vice Beer next door. They share seating and had a covered area for shelter from the cold wind. Ordered pork and steak tacos, cheese quesadilla for the kids and their chicken flautas. Everything was super delicious, arguably some of the best in the area. Looking to spice things up? Order the habanero hot sauce!

Casey C.

Yelp
Taco truck located smack dab next to a large dumpster in the back of the parking lot, so the smell of a garbage truck is your ambiance. Worst location possible for a food truck. Food is decent, but $14 average per person so Oak Street Station is a MUCH better choice and costs less!
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Food truck at Vice Beer. They have outdoor tables and you can eat in the brewery Food: Tacos were excellent. Street size but loved the carne asada and Birria Tacos Price: Standard price Service: Took a little while though for the food to arrive Parking: Parking lot

Yelp
Delicious tacos, the quesabirria tacos are my favorite! Quick service and conveniently located outside of Vice Beer. Having the options to get tacos with beer is a plus! Definitely recommend even if it's just to get the food.

Matt A.

Yelp
Gosh damn this place is bomb! Specifically the seafood taco menu. My mouth is still trying to figure out what hit it. Just go you will love it.
google avatar

Yelp
Been eating Elly's tacos at the East Vancouver location for some time. Best tacos in Vancouver IMO. We decided to try his new Hawthorne location. Same great tacos but this place is inside. I understand he opened a new spot in NW Portland, as well. I'm sure they make the same great tacos. You won't go wrong eating at El Viejon no matter the location.
google avatar

Eleazar R.

Yelp
The meats they use and the way they prepare it to perfection! Me and my wife came up from SoCal and dang man this place can compete with our favorite places back home. So good we went twice and second time took friends that were from Seattle Area even they said it was the best they've had since moving up from Cali. Service is great as well! 10/10 must try again!
google avatar

Yelp
Food truck outside of a beer place in a mostly empty plaza, outdoor seating was great on a good-weather day. Seafood tacos were great! Gobernador shrimp taco was an extra cheesy treat with delicious grilled shrimp. Rockfish taco was fried perfect with a good balance of fixins'. Fried oyster taco was legit if you're into those flavors. Birria taco came with a small side of consume to dip into. Quesadilla came with a solid serving of your choice of meat inside. The underwhelming location def surprised me with awesome seafood tacos.

Yelp
This was back in June I believe, but really great tacos! Service was great and it was hot out so why not have some tacos haha

Aldu I.

Yelp
This is the spot. Awesome, authentic Mexican food, very spicy habanero sauce. Friendly service. Not sure I can think of anything bad to say.

Sora S.

Yelp
Prompt and friendly service. Consistently the best quesabirria I've tried around Washington, it's too good I genuinely want to eat it every day. Cute and simple location, lots of seating. Thank you!

Pat L.

Yelp
After hearing all the good reviews on El Viejon we decided to try the truck off Park Crest. I picked the gal's brain because my only experience with tacos is (please don't laugh too hard) taco bell. We decided on the quesabirrias tacos. They were delicious. The beef was tender and juicy and the sauce was wonderful as well as the consumme. I can't do spice and they were not spicy but there were containers of salsa if you needed spice. Two tacos more than filled me up. We will be back.

Yelp
3.5 Stars! It was not bad at all! And that says a lot cause all the Mexican food I've had in Vancouver has been a 1 star or less. Food was fresh! Really liked that. The taco was meaty but barely cilantro & onions. The guac was flavorless and honestly didn't make sense. But the taco was fresh and had good enough flavor. The empanada was crispy! Shrimp was cooked perfectly, just not enough filling for $6+. Seemed like 1.5 shrimps and cheese. Can def do a lil more filling for the cost. Burrito was thick! Chicken had great char and spice, asada was bland in comparison. Rice was a lil mushy and beans were not salty enough. Cabbage in the burrito seems like filler, should have put pico or salsa or crema. But the chicken saved it! The red salsa blaaaaaand! Like super bland! Good thing we had cholula on the table. I know it's picky, but I'm from CA and we get spoiled with Mexican food. It's def better than any I've had out here and I would def come back!

Yelp
Tucked away in an unassuming strip mall parking lot is a food truck slinging out some of the best tacos on this side of Washington. They have a symbiotic relationship going on with Vice Beer next door, as most patrons of either also visit the other to pair their meal. The tacos are well priced and well sized--two should be enough for most people. I wish they were double tortillas, but that's a minor complaint at most. The seafood tacos blew me away the most, particularly the crispy rockfish, but don't sleep on the carne asada, which comes with a massive dollop of guacamole. Grab a pint and order some tacos; you won't find a much better meal around.
google avatar

Rose D.

Yelp
Wow! They served us up THE BEST tacos we've ever had. If you want to get a glimpse at some of this deliciousness I highly recommend following them on Instagram because they're always posting pics of what they're cooking & any weekly/daily specials. Their food truck is tucked back in an industrial strip mall that doesn't face the main road, so it's easy to miss them. They are located next to Vice Beer's taproom so you can either enjoy your food there (and have a beverage at Vive Beer) or take it to-go. And the lady working in the truck was so sweet & helpful. Now, back to the food. Their food is so good, and so beautifully presented you would think it came from a fancier more upscale sit-down Mexican restaurant. Between the Hubs & I we had the shrimp & cheese empanada, carne asada taco, grilled Mahi Mahi taco & Cajun shrimp taco. It was all so absolutely delicious I was a bit sad we hadn't found this place sooner. And I was especially impressed that the shrimp in both the empanada & taco was perfectly cooked & tender, because shrimp is so I easy to overcook and get rubbery- but not theirs, theirs was perfect.

Yelp
Wow, I saw a video on Instagram introducing El Viejons owner. I decided to go try. Omg, the food, flavors, scents were so delicious. So the food truck is not visible from Mill Plain or Parkcrest. So once you get to the corner of, look for the Car wash sign and turn into the driveway from Mill Plain and drive back. Then you will see their truck. There was a line of people so, that told me this has to be good and worth the wait. The order placed was quick, but you can wait under a small patio or wait in your car due to weather. When my food was ready ,oh maybe 15 - 20 mins, they were very gracious in apologizing for my wait. So if your in our area of Vancouver stop by , you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Jonathan N.

Yelp
After several visits and tasting quite a few menu items I can honestly say this place makes some killer food. Give them a try and visit the Vice Beer next door to wash it down.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
Amazing food and Amazing service. Love the specials . We have tried almost everything on the menu . Hands down best place to get tacos in Vancouver
google avatar

Malika U.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place out because I've seen everyone rave about it. I tried the tacos and was very underwhelmed. The steak and chicken tacos were so bland... The only thing that gave it flavor was adding hot sauce to it, and even then it was still a little flavorless. My manager and co-worker also felt the same. They also said their tacos and burritos were also bland. Not sure what the hype is but most likely will not return.

Daniel B.

Yelp
Love the quesabirria tacos with console. Also the Carne asade tacos. Service is good too.
google avatar

Caroline G.

Yelp
Estos tacos me encantaron, las empanadas de camarón también. La sala roja fue mi favorita.
google avatar

Zoe T.

Yelp
We decided to go for some Mexican food, and this food truck did not disappoint. We had one carne asada and two cajun shrimp tacos with the habanero salsa. Omg they should bottle their salsa! It was so flavorful and smooth with the taco. I loved it! The cajun shrimp were super fresh and the marinade had lots of flavor. Everything was made to order so there was a wait, but I ordered a tamarind soda and my husband got an IPA from the microbrewery that shared the il fresco dining area. WE WILL BE BACK!.
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Grabbed these on my lunch break to cure a hangover, and if my boss saw the way I devoured them she would've sent me home early. Needless to say, it was money.

Phil T.

Yelp
Went and tried it for the first time just a few days ago. Good location with the brewery right next-door, and both the wife and I were extremely happy with everything that we ordered. We tried to get a mix of different things and I was quite pleasantly surprised to see empanadas. Not nearly enough local Mexican restaurants have good empanadas and we were both quite happy with the shrimp empanadas that we had. The meats were all well seasoned and authentic. Birria tacos were exceptional and we plan on coming back with friends again soon. We enjoyed all of our tacos, quesadillas, tortilla chips etc. the salsa was also quite tasty and had a great flavor. The employees were very friendly and positive. Service was pretty quick and we were able to go into Vice brewery next door and we had a good sampling of various beers before we ordered up a few pints. Nice outside courtyard area with both sun and shade to met all preferences. Chill atmosphere with plenty of customers for a slow Thursday, but all seemed to be return customers which shows the level of satisfaction resulting in return customers. We will return soon as we were quite pleased with all of the food we had. I want to come back and check it out on a weekend next time.

Yelp
Wow! Just WoW!! All I can say is that you have to try for yourself. So amazed by the flavor of all that I tried, Mahi Mahi, shrimp and biria de res tacos. My family had carne asada burritos and said that was very good also. This place should be a sit down restaurant My favorite place right now! Staff was very friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to be back and try other things on the menu

Candy C.

Yelp
Food is absolutely fabulous. Variety to choose from to your liking. Staff is exceptional and very friendly. This is a food truck establishment but restaurant quality. Always look forward when at Fortside Brewing enjoying a fresh beer and ordering from El Viejon. Plenty of lighting provided to enjoy the great food.
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
This is the food cart outside Vice brewing just off Mill Plain in East Vancouver... Dang!!! Incredibly cool owner and family, but really isn't it still about the food? We grabbed a couple tacos, Al Pastor and Carnitas, and a shrimp cocktail, all incredible and good value too. For me, the carnitas was about as good as it gets, with that little edge of crispy bits that make certain ones stand out. We went back and added the current special, gobernador taco, with shrimp and melty cheeses but also a double tortilla, the outer one crisped up. That was essentially food perfection, and it wasn't even the shrimp... that cheese and the slight fry on the tortilla. Heaven We'll be back for sure

Shelley C.

Yelp
Had beef tacos with a great dipping sauce from this food truck at Vise Beer. A bit too much cinnamon in the seasoning. Beers were good but we found the outdoor seating a little uncomfortable. Totally worth a try.

Rachel S.

Yelp
The food is always amazing and so is the service. We love the El Gobernador (shrimp) tacos, Birria (shredded beef) tacos, Chicken quesadillas, and Shrimp Empanadas! The Horchata is also really good.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp
Great tacos and their seafood tacos sets them apart. I particularly love the fried oyster tacos. The quesabirria tacos with consome and the carne asado tacos are also great. Good thick guacamole, although spicy, so be warned. Very friendly service, but it can be slow since the lines are loooong. Fortunately, it's parked at Vice Beer, so you can have a beer while you wait. I probably wouldn't give this place 5 stars if it was in a city or region with better taquerias, but for Vancouver, it's about as good as it gets.
google avatar

Joe D.

Yelp
Sorry no pictures. The food did not stand a chance! Service was amazing. They have a good balance of taking care of new orders and getting the fresh ones out. And everyone was so kind! Speed was great. 5 people in front of me, one of them was a 20 taco order and my wait was 15 min max. Food... portions, flavors were all on point. I had several different tacos but the Pork special and the carnitas were the star of the show for me. Shrimp empanada was next! As a gringo I will say I needed a little more salt on everything. Also ambiance was great. You can stand in the parking lot and smell all the wonderful food smells. But I will be back!
google avatar

Waldo K.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, generous servings, casual shaded outdoor seating. And such friendly service! I had tacos - fish, coconut prawn, and vege. All amazing, I couldn't believe how much flavor they got into the vege taco. Highly recommended! My son had fish quesadilla. Also loved the horchata which was not on the menu.
google avatar

Michelle H.

Yelp
Best Mahi tacos ever! Grilled mahi with cabbage picked onion avocado-Lime crema and a side of hot sauce. I had two. Could have eaten two more! Sat on the Vice Beer porch which is small but adorable. My guy loved his beer. It's a win-win!
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
Super tasty tacos! I got the pollo asado, carnitas, and al pastor tacos. The food was all super fresh and really flavorful. The salsas were the perfect accompaniment. The staff were all super friendly, too.
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
I ate here last Friday night. I got the al pastor, mahi mahi and pork carnitas tacos. They were all delicious. They make all their food from scratch including their soft taco shells. I had a chance to talk with Eldy who is the owner and chef. He is totally cool and really knows how to sever up great tacos. Oh did I mention they have huge burritos for 12 bucks? They had a line waiting to get food for hours. So good. I will come back for sure.
google avatar

Peggy M.

Yelp
Love this food truck! Their food is made fast and delicious! The birria tacos are delicious! They don't open until noon, so you can't have an early lunch, but their food is yummy!
google avatar

Lori M.

Yelp
I've finally made it and my husband and I loved it . We got a shrimp empanada, the special pork belly taco , a shrimp taco and one more . Very good, great flavor and I think it will be our new "go to" for Mexican food . Can't post any pictures because we got home and bam all gone .
google avatar

Melody M.

Yelp
This is so good! The tacos are all amazing. I haven't stayed there the outside area is cute and has a beer bar right there. The staff have been wonderful each time.

Gab L.

Yelp
Great! We go here once every month or so amazing atmosphere staff is so nice with us and the food is delicious for a reasonable price too. Definitely one of the best mexican places to eat in the vancouver area if not the best.
google avatar

Jerry M.

Yelp
I saw lots of great Yelp reviews for El Viejon Taqueria, so I went to check them out for lunch. They are a food truck adjacent to Vice Beer, so they apparently share the same clientele and have a shared covered outdoor seating area. I ordered two of my favorite Mexican food items: a Quesabirria Taco and an Al Pastor Taco. Both were nicely prepared. The Quesabirria Taco was like a smaller version of a grilled quesadilla with seasoned stewed birria meat and included a cup of consommé for dipping. The Al Pastor was enhanced with bits of fresh chopped pineapple. Delicious food...it was a real treat to go there!
google avatar

CarrieAnn W.

Yelp
Wow, another amazing meal. Always consistent in serving delicious food and nice portions. We ordered the carnitas tacos and chips and guacamole. This is our go-to place for Mexican food. The staff is always friendly and go above and beyond to make sure their customers are happy.
google avatar

Kenneth R.

Yelp
Hands down with no competition to even challenge them El Viejon has been the best tacos we have eaten in Vancouver, WA since we moved up from SoCal last year. It's a must I go here on my day off at work to get my taco fixings and when I order tacos from El Viejon it's always satisfying.
google avatar

Gia M.

Yelp
Very tasty Carne Asadsa Taco and Birria with Queso. The Al Pastor taco had some fat attached to the meat pieces, which I didn't care for. I had to keep picking the fat off of the meat. Nasty! The Grilled Mahi Mahi Taco was decent. However, I believe Woody's Tacos makes a better fish taco. I did love the side Consommé sauce that came with the Birria. However, the tortillas didn't taste like they were homemade. Plus the toppings (guac sauce, pickled onions, ect.) tasted like they came from a jar and not freshly made. I lived in Mexico for a year, so I in comparison, I would say these tacos were decent, but I've had better.
