My family and I were very excited to try this new restaurant that had taken over the humble Tai Show North - but honestly we wish Tai Show was still there after our experience. We loved Pentimento, so we were willing to give Elaine's a try, as there are many of the same chefs and staff, and a similar menu. While the menu itself had some of the old favorites, the prices were extremely steep considering the quality, which couldn't even compare to Pentimento.
The atmosphere was fairly nice - a little loud, tables close together and packed in, and the decor was fine but a bit bare bones. As for the service, it wasn't terrible, and everyone was nice, but for the prices and the amount of people working, there was room for improvement - i.e. water jug was empty for a while, table overcrowded with unused wine glasses, service a little slow. It was busy for a weekday so perhaps they were unprepared, but there did seem to be a lot of staff.
As for the food, the appetizers were great and would probably be worth it for happy hour, but all of our entrees left much to be desired. The tagliatelle with shrimp had flavorful pasta, but the shrimp was completely bland and overcooked- mind you this was a $36 entree with four pieces of shrimp. The spaghetti dish had an overwhelming amount of pepper, which we debated sending back. And the bolognese was pretty good but certainly not worth the $32.
Overall, it's a nice restaurant, and I would not have written this review if it wasn't extremely overpriced for the quality and service. Personally, I am used to spending over $30 on an entree- and don't mind doing so when the food is worth it - however I don't think you're getting much bang for your buck here. It seems to be going for an elegant, expensive vibe, but the quality is just not there, along with the portion sizes - as if they were trying to squeeze you for every dollar you had, whilst not increasing the portion sizes or adding to the quality. Anyway, it's a new restaurant, so hoping it improves.
