On the Grid : Elbphilharmonie

"Well this is kind of the "problem child" of the city. The concert hall was built on top of an old storage house, which now holds apartments and a hotel. Besides its controversial design, it bears quite some scandal. Construction began 2007 with an estimated cost of 77 Million Euro and opening date of 2010. Now it will open late 2016/early 2017 and cost the tax payers around 789 Million Euro. You do the math. Although the building is located in the Speicherstadt, we recommend to go to the other side of the Elbe through the old tunnel for a more spectacular view." - Boom

"With its wave-like rooftop and eye-catching glass facade, which features 1,000 curved window panels to reflect the sky, the Elbphilharmonie is Hamburg’s newest landmark and the focal point of the HafenCity harbor regeneration project. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron where the Kaispeicher warehouse once stood, the vast building is home to two concert halls, the plush (and separately run) Westin Hamburg hotel, and residential apartments. The venue’s Grand Hall seats 2,100 guests in a classic vineyard-style seating, while the Recital Hall hosts more intimate concerts of chamber, jazz, and world music. If you can’t manage to catch a performance here, it’s worth at least visiting the wraparound public viewing platform, which, at 121 feet high, offers excellent views across Hamburg and its handsome harbor."

3 Best Day Trips from Berlin to Hamburg, Leipzig, and Potsdam | Condé Nast Traveler

"Imagine 1,000 curved glass panels set atop Hamburg’s biggest warehouse, all glittering in the sun: The stunning new-meets-old structure alone, designed by Tate Modern architects Herzog & de Meuron, is reason enough to visit the Elbphilharmonie. One of the world’s largest concert halls, it officially opened in January 2017 after 10 years of construction (and a price tag of more than €800), and today it's rightly the showpiece of the city." - Liz Humphreys

Amazing works of modern architecture you need to see in real life - SilverKris

"This striking concert hall in Hamburg by Herzog & de Meuron is noted for a shimmering glass facade and a tent‑like roof composed of some 1,100 mirrored panes, producing a luminous, jewel‑like effect that has made it an architectural showpiece on the waterfront." - Daven Wu

The Elbphilharmonie, affectionately nicknamed "Elphi," is far more than just a concert hall; it is an architectural masterpiece and a bold symbol of modern Hamburg, earning its place among the world's most impressive cultural landmarks. Designed by Herzog & de Meuron, the structure features a dazzling, undulating glass crown resting atop the massive, historic red-brick Kaispeicher A warehouse, creating an electrifying bridge between tradition and modernity in the HafenCity district. At its heart is the spectacular Grand Hall, celebrated globally for its "vineyard" seating arrangement and acoustics masterfully engineered by Yasuhisa Toyota, utilizing 10,000 unique gypsum-fibre panels (the "White Skin") to ensure flawless sound for 2,100 guests. Crucially, the publicly accessible Plaza, reached by the 82-meter-long curved "Tube" escalator, offers a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the harbour and city, making it a must-visit attraction for every traveler, even without a concert ticket.

Google
I visited the Elbphilharmonie to enjoy the view. Simply go to the ticket office in front of the building, get your free ticket, and enter. Ride the long escalator up to enjoy a 360-degree view of Hamburg's river and surrounding buildings. The weather was bad, so I couldn't see the sunset, but I still enjoyed the magnificent Elbphilharmonie building and the view.

Google
The Elbphilharmonie is an absolute must-see in Hamburg, offering an incredible and accessible experience for everyone. The best feature is the publicly accessible Plaza viewing deck, which can be entered free of cost ( free ticket )The architectural journey up the Tube escalator is unique, leading you to a breathtaking vantage point where you get a spectacular, panoramic view of the Hamburg ports and docks, allowing you to watch the busy ship decks and waterways in action. It's truly one of the best spots in the city, especially during the early morning for fewer crowds or around sunset for magical city lights

Hamburg's famous Elbphilharmonie, built at a massive cost—reportedly ten times its original budget—includes not only the concert hall but also a hotel. Upon entering, an elevator leads directly through a long, beautiful white arcade to a platform. Those not attending a performance can purchase tickets to tour the platform, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the harbor. There are performances of various styles almost daily. Tickets can be purchased online from the concert hall's website; prices vary. I was in the smaller Kleiner Saal, a vertical hall with chairs. The acoustics were excellent. The larger hall is the Grossersaal, used for performances such as symphony orchestras. Outside the concert hall, there is a café and a shop. Many audience were very relaxed, enjoying drinks before the performances—beer or champagne. Among the audience were elderly ladies, some frail but wearing long dresses. People really enjoy their daily music here.

Google
Beautiful views. We tried to get the 3€ ticket for 9 people to go in directly. But it took so long to get the online tickets that it was not worth it at all. But the building was cool and had a very nice view to the city. The cafe was okayish but the shop had some cool vinyl accessories and decorations.

Google
I recently visited this striking building in Hamburg, and it truly exceeded my expectations. Architecturally, it is a masterpiece—modern, innovative, and with a sense of elegance that immediately stands out. The design is both cutting-edge and inviting, and the panoramic views it offers over the city and the harbor are absolutely breathtaking. It’s one of those landmarks that feels both futuristic and seamlessly integrated into its surroundings, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Hamburg. One of the aspects I really appreciated is the accessibility. Entrance is free, although you need to queue in order to receive a timed ticket to pass through the turnstiles. The process is well organized, and while there can be a wait, it is usually manageable. For those who prefer not to stand in line, there is the option to purchase a “skip-the-line” ticket for just a few euros, which I found to be very convenient and worth considering during peak hours. Inside, the atmosphere continues to impress. The space is bright, airy, and beautifully maintained, offering plenty of opportunities to take in the surroundings at your own pace. The store located within the building is also worth a visit: it is stylish, well-curated, and features a nice selection of souvenirs and design objects that reflect the spirit of Hamburg. Overall, this building is much more than just a viewpoint—it’s a cultural and architectural highlight that combines innovation, beauty, and accessibility. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience one of the most remarkable perspectives of Hamburg.

Google
You need to get a ticket to enter from the ticket booth, but they are free. Amazing building with absolutely spectacular views. Can highly recommend!

Google
View from the rooftop is nice, free entry (need to get a free ticket at door). I have been there twice, the first time is a gloomy workday in November, and there is no wait. The second time it gets quite crowded on a sunny weekend afternoon. There is a long queue for getting the free ticket, but there is also the option of paying 3 euro to skip the queue.

Yelp
A beautiful building. You get a good view of the city. They also have a store to buy little mementos.

Yelp
Beautiful building! Came here to take in the view from the balcony. Upon arrival, need to get a (free) ticket to go up, and then rode the long escalator up. The escalator curves with the building which was super cool, never seen that before! On the balcony area, we walked around the perimeter to get the view, was pretty great! Quite enjoyed coming here, would recommend it!

Yelp
Breath taking venue. The acoustics are phenomenal and the musicians top notch. Interior architecture is stunning. If you travel to Hamburg and miss this you have lost a chance for an experience of a lifetime.

Yelp
I had the great fortune of attending a concert here. Not just any concert but Handel's Messiah during the Christmas season sung by Hamburg's choir of which my friends are part of. The concert hall is a retrofit of an old shipping warehouse. As you can tell from the pictures it is an amazing place and the acoustics were excellent. I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. i can't put video on here but I did record the Hallelujah Chorus with my iPhone. By the way the Hermans don't stand up for this chorus. It must be an American thing.

Yelp
Went to the Elb Philharmonie for a Piano Concert of Mitsuko Uchida. The sound is unbelievable and it feels like the piano was in front of us. Unreal. The light in the Philharmonie while she played was too bright and distracted a little bit from the sound. Some things that could be improved: - the air inside was way too dry and it was too warm. - the elevators to the garage are too slow and too small so it takes ages until you can leave via your car - no stairs to the garage Will give 5 stars when the organization got improved.

Yelp
Elbphilharmonie, conceived by Herzog & De Meuron, is really well thinking. The shapes and materials are wonderful and the acoustic works perfectly. You will be able to enjoy the view at 360° and observe the harburg, Speicherstadt and Hafen City.

Yelp
Great place for an overview of hafencity! It is free to go into the building; from outside it is awesome if you manage to see the sunset reflecting in the glass pieces of the building. We have seen it from a boat! Amazing!

Yelp
I went up to the viewing level and it really wasn't anything special. The apartment building across the street was higher than the viewing platform, so anyone with those apartments would have a better view. The platform was barely higher than the surrounding rooftops, so you pretty much got a view of roof tops. The view of the harbor also wasn't really any better than you would get from ground level. I thought the most exciting part was the escalator ride up.

Yelp
Absolutely biggest fraud ever!!!!! You click on the website and only if you are familiar with other concert event places in Hamburg - Laeiszhalle - will you be able to distinguish between the real Elbphilharmonie and the old Laeiszhalle. We fell for this scheme and would never have bought tickets for this event ( 12/25) What a terribly misleading website !!!!! You should be ashamed to consciously trick people who are not familiar with your venues and want to book !!

Kerri-Ann L.

Yelp
Great views of the city and excellent architecture :) we nearly missed out on visiting as we did not realise that you could go up there. It's also was free to go to - which is an added bonus!

Arlene Z.

Yelp
We decided to go to a concert here because we were just looking for something to do. It was a really funky German string quartet, but it was a fun experience!! The acoustics of the concert halls is just amazing! The design alone is something to see! Plus, if you go to the concert, you get to enjoy amazing, beautiful views from inside. I would highly recommend it!!

Yelp
This is one of Hamburg's most important construction projects - of what is supposed to become one of the best (and beautiful) concert halls in the world. It is located on the Elbe waterfront in the HafenCity district. The opening is planned for 2012.
