"Dark Matter Coffee has opened its fifth cafe, Electric Mud Coffee Bar, at the corner of Milwaukee and Western avenues. It serves Do-Rite Donuts with a menu similar to Dark Matter's locations, offering a full-line of iced coffees on draft including Hopped Chocolate City and the popular agave latte. Electric Mud is a tribute to Chicago’s legendary Blues scenes, named as a reference to Chicago resident Muddy Waters." - Ashok Selvam

Always glad to have a dark matter within walking distance. Has a lot of good stuff on hand including merchandise, beans, and both pastries and hot items along with their coffee. Decor is nice and I've always liked how each dark matter location feels like it's own unique thing. If you're nearby this is definitely one you should be stopping at!

Great ambiance, colorful decor, delicious latte, and friendly service—a great coffee spot all around ☕️

The guy who attended me was super sweet! He recommended me the Dolor de Oro drink. It was very smooth and not too sweet either. Loveeee the decor

Google
Best coffee shop in the area. The baristas are incredibly nice, the pastries are always fresh and fantastic, hot food is always solid, and can’t go wrong getting Dark Matter made well. Having moved to Chicago in the past year coming from a place with very few local coffee spots, I feel so lucky to have Electric Mud around the corner.

Walking in I knew I had found a pretty special hole in the wall. The initial energy that hits you has you feeling as comfortable as any regular just in for their usual. The staff was incredibly friendly, and educated me on a load of facts on the blues and the artists that helped build it into the beautiful tool of expression it is today. Without question you'll be in caffeinated heaven at the halfway point of your first sip. Couple it with a relaxing view of a quaint downtown neighborhood, and you've got the perfect ingredients for your new coffee spot. ☕ CHEERS!! ☕

I love trying unique drinks and decided to try a special latte but I can’t remember the name! I know it had sage in it. It was very subtle and smooth. A very tasty drink for fall! You can order ahead from their app for faster service.

Electric Mud Coffee Bar, located just off of the Western "L" stop in Bucktown, is a must-visit spot for coffee lovers seeking a cozy, artistic, and friendly atmosphere. As a Dark Matter Coffee location, it stands out with its top-notch staff and incredible music selection, which perfectly complements the eye-catching, wacky murals that adorn its walls. This unique space defies the cookie-cutter coffee shop aesthetic, offering a refreshing alternative to Pinterest-inspired, overdone marketing ploys. During my visit, I enjoyed a 12oz mocha oat milk latte alongside a glazed donut – the perfect treat for a productive work session on my laptop. While the cafe is on the smaller side, offering around 7 tables with 2-3 seats each, I had no trouble finding a spot and felt right at home. So, if you're on the lookout for a one-of-a-kind, anti-corporate coffee experience in Bucktown, be sure to drop by Electric Mud Coffee Bar – you won't be disappointed! ◽️◾️◾️◽️◽️◽️◽️◾️◽️◾️◾️◽️◾️◽️◾️◽️◽️◾️◾️◽️◽️◾️◽️◾️ ◽️◽️◾️◽️◽️◾️◽️◾️

Leave one of the best places in Bucktown for coffee. I love stopping over here for their on tap brews. Always good for a grab and go when you are in West Bucktown or Bucktown. The staff is awesome. This is one of my favorites.

Yelp
Delicious coffee with a fun atmosphere inside! Checked it out on a whim and really loved the music they played inside. Perfect way to relax on a hot day with the iced coffee and will return!

Nisha C.

Yelp
I stopped by here to get my morning coffee before running errands as I am a huge fan of dark matter coffee. I got the vanilla suburbs natural cold brew and it gave me the kick I needed after not getting a good night sleep and having to be up early. This coffee shop is located right off the western line which makes it really convenient if you are taking public transport and stop here. The quality of the coffee is strong. The service is always nice and quick. I definitely want to try one of their signature latte flavors next time.

El D.

Yelp
This coffee? Absolute floptina. Tasted like they roasted it in Satan's air fryer. Tried it twice, months apart, and both times it was CREMATED. And the caffeine? One sip could probably send John Cena to the ER. Seriously, this chain is all marketing, zero quality.

Yelp
Dark Matter is awesome! This is the second location I visited. I was recently on a weekend trip to Chicago and was able to meet up with one of my high school best friends on my way out of town. We met here at Dark Matter for a couple of hours and had a great time. The vibes and decor here are great! The staff was super friendly- you can tell they have plenty of regulars. To drink I had the Mayan Mocha which was iced and I added oatmilk. It was really good because they have great quality coffee that is really delicious - but the flavors didn't come out how I had hoped. The Mayan mocha has chocolate, agave, cayenne, and cinnamon. If I were to return I would get this again but ask for a bit more spices. I also had a vegan chocolate donut. It was delicious- couldn't even tell it was vegan. Overall we had a great time and would definitely return!

Melanie V.

Yelp
Great vibe, kind staff, clean location, quick service and delicious coffee. The regular coffee is piping hot and smooth. Dropped a star because my husband got the specialty bourbon coffee latte and it just didn't taste good. Too much bourbon flavor, not enough sweetness, all in all just not great. Plain coffee is where it's at! Plus though baked goods looked awesome.

Sari L.

Yelp
I was staying at my friends across the street and I needed a quick caffeine fix. She recommended Dark Matter. It was busy inside and it's pretty small. I ordered a dirty chai. It was ok. There was a flavor in it I felt like I couldnt put my finger on. Their pastries looked good but I didn't try one. The drink was fine and I guess did the trick. Maybe I'd go back and try something else because she really loves this place.

Kyra B.

Yelp
I've been in Chicago for three days and for three days in a row I've come here for my morning coffee! I have quite a drive for what I am in town for and this is the only none national brand coffee shop open in the area early enough for me to go to and I'm so happy that it's this spot! I have really liked the iced coffee I've gotten the past two days and the almond croissants and amazing! I really love that they have oat milk out on the stir-in counter. I have never seen that at another shop - such amazing customer service to have an non dairy option for everyone! The staff has been very kind and attentive the past three mornings. I will absolutely come again next time I'm in town!

Janine A.

Yelp
EXCELLENT COFFEE. Truly some of the best. Plus their staff are all very friendly and will gladly walk you thru their options.

Rachelle R.

Yelp
Very cool neighborhood coffee shop. Great coffee, quiet place to work, will definitely be back!

Nicole W.

Yelp
Doesn't Matter what kinda Coffee you're looking for this place will get you out of the Mud! Dark Matter has a few spots in Chicago (and the beans are used in a few different coffee shops), but there is something special about this location. The plants + cool lighting make it a great spot to chill with friends. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but I would say their pastries are a pass. Will definitely be making a stop back here, it was electric!

Steve A.

Yelp
Another place around here that has this great coffee. Dark Matter has this shop called the Electric Mud. It's hard to know what this name means, but it sounds cool though. Basically there's only this one small room for a few customers if that, and the menu is small also. That doesn't mean it's bad of course, as the coffee is the most important part. Came here recently one morning and got some coffee and one of the few things they had as food. It has about the same menu at all locations. There's not a whole lot to choose from, but it's good no matter what kind of coffee you get though. It has several choices of cold and hot brews. The best one so far is the Agave Latte. It's about $4 for a regular cup. That's kind of overpriced but it's still not as bad as other places. It's made with agave, almond syrup, dark chocolate, and the Matter Cinnamon Blend. Mostly the food options are only the Taos Bakes bars, which are good to munch on between sips. It's about $3 each. These come in a few vegan flavors and these are also fairly healthy. Good stuff as far as coffee. It's kind of expensive for the amount you get which is the worst thing about it. There needs to be some more food options but the Taos Bakes bars are good for morning snacking.

Kaitlin C.

Yelp
Atmosphere and staff are 12/10. This is the coolest spot to spend some time. Enjoy the great tunes playing, 3D art popping out of the wall, and gorgeous murals. The coffee was top notch but does have a very unique profile that is maybe not for everyone. If you're a coffee snob this might be the place for you.

Eric L.

Yelp
Swanky Bucktown outpost of the now famous Dark Matter Coffee crew. Full selection of coffee drinks in a funk-cozy little coffee nook. Some pastry and food options as well. Not a ton of seating.

Becca D.

Yelp
This is my favorite coffee ever. It's so smooth and delicious I barely need to add any sugar. I got an iced latte which was just as fun to drink as it was to watch the barista whip up. There is not much seating compared to other locations. Also I was disappointed with food selection (again compared to other locations). Peking was a little tricky since the neighborhood parking is for permit holders only. They seemed to have only a few donuts left by the time we got there around 11 AM. The coffee is so good I still have to give it five stars.

Len L.

Yelp
First time here and won't be my last. I enjoyed the barrel-aged mocha latte in the other store and asked if they had that here, they did not have that but said they can make it, which they did from hot expresso with a cup of ice. In essence, they made that drink without any milk which in my mind was what I wanted from the start. Prices was decent for the ask and service was impeccable. I will be back for more and there is plenty on free parking nearby.

Alexander H.

Yelp
Immaculate vibes, great service, great coffee! I love this place. I got a vanilla suburb nitro, it was very strong and bitter which is just the thing for me.

Ted C.

Yelp
I really don't like stepping into coffee shops. I'm not a big coffee drinker and if it's a place that takes their coffee seriously like DM does it seems intimidating to walk in and say "I don't drink coffee." Walking into a place where you don't like their flagship product isn't a good start. So, with that in mind I have no idea why I walked in the first place. But I did and I told the barista, "I don't drink coffee, what other options are there for me?" She didn't skip a beat and pointed out the teas they have available. "Can I get it iced?" because why not add another burden? I ended up getting their green tea iced, and they brewed it on the spot, let it steep and then poured it into a cup with ice and then added some more. It took a little time but it was appreciated, having a batch of pre-made iced tea isn't bad, but it can sit for too long and get super bitter. Here, I got the slightly floral notes from the tea and was able to get the flavor of it and not just a caffeine hit. The next time though, I'll ask for a little less water during the steeping process, because after a while it watered down so much I couldn't appreciate the flavor of it.

Andrye A.

Yelp
As a coffee lover I thought that this coffee shop was amazing! So amazing that I went twice in two days! I got the agave latte and on the second day I got the Mayan Mocha which has a bit of kick to it with the cayenne. The atmosphere of this coffee shop was very eccentric and full of light and I could definitely see myself coming back here to knock out some work. The staff was friendly and the coffee options are really diverse. If you're ever nearby you should try this coffee shop.

Lauren P.

Yelp
The coffee itself is 5 stars. The service at this location leaves more to be desired. There were too employees, one was socializing with a visiting group of friends, the other didn't seem to notice several tables needing to be cleaned. Also when I bought a bag of coffee beans, they didn't notify me that it includes a free coffee. I only learned of this when I went back on a different day to buy another bag of coffee beans and a different barista told me I could get a free coffee with it. The baristas on the first visit seemed knowledgeable about the flavor profiles, as I was torn between Tierra and Fuego. I asked which one had a fruitier profile and I was informed that I couldn't go wrong with either and that the Fuego had more acidity. I ended up with both bags during my short visit to Chicago and I'm glad I bought both. The Fuego one was supposed to have hops flavor, which I didn't get too much of. The Tierra one was super legit and packed the fruity flavors I was looking for! I would definitely come back again just for the coffee beans. I wish they sold more flavors like Tierra and Fuego outside of Chicago, since I've seen some of their coffees in Whole Foods locations outside of Chicago/IL.

Yelp
Oh man, I had the most delicious coffee but cannot recall the name. It was Oro something; chocolate, heat, espresso and cinnamon? I wish I could remember but man, what a buzz and such good flavor. A uber cool vibe. LOVED it at the cafe.

Ellie K.

Yelp
How I came across this cafe is actually really bizarre. My friend had to drop me off in this area and I was waiting for my Uber outside this cafe. Then I felt like I was getting approached by a creepy stranger and i basically walked away from the stranger and into this cafe as casually as possible. I ordered a cup of iced coffee (tasted like it was dark roast with some acidity- really nice cup of iced coffee). Then my Uber arrived so I left the cafe with my coffee. Got home safely and enjoyed my coffee!! The only "downside" was that this was a very strong cup of coffee so I was jittery the whole afternoon. But better stronger than weaker!

Sue T.

Yelp
Amazing employees! I noticed that the two very young baristas greeted customers by name. I noticed that one barista was diligent about keeping the place impeccable. I don't mean just cleaning the counters. She stooped down to clean the white subway titles that are on the front of the counter running to the floor. And here is how she made my experience unique and warm. I was there for a bit, sipping my iced coffee; eventually I was running low on battery power on my computer. I stood up to look for an outlet. She sensed my need and she pointed out the outlet. Then, she moved a table so that I could sit down, plug in my computer and continue working. In a neighborhood where i could choose from 4 coffee shops, this one stands out. Coffee is great, service is great, and the employees go the extra mile for customers.

Russ K.

Yelp
Bumned they don't have skim milk. Before they dropped skim milk I liked the place. Friendly service.

Alex C.

Yelp
The people that work here are rude AF. I've been here twice and have been basically yelled at both times. First, because there's only one person allowed in at a time and I came in behind someone, second because I didn't order at the "right spot." Jeez

Aliza F.

Yelp
My first time in and as a barista myself I was excited to see what pastries/coffee was offered but I didn't end up staying long due to the atmosphere. The staff gave each other the side eye when I ordered a pastry from the corner case and was given the wrong one, and was very short with me from the get go. I totally get having a bad day but the two baristas there made it seem like I came in last minute, but I was the only patron two hours before close.

Alison Z.

Yelp
Was told that Electric Mud's coffee is super strong and that their mochas are super delicious. Finally stopped in and confirmed that both were true! Good vibes, great coffee. I love all the vine-y pothos hanging from the ceiling. Lots of natural light streaming into the cafe.

Belle L.

Yelp
Praise Be! :-D {inspired by Handmaiden's Tale} xo As always, Coffee is great. The Girls are great too oozing with killer kindness and knowledge. ;) Smooth OLD DANK NIC! 3 tbsp for 10 oz pour over. Thank you Ladies for the recommendation. I shall be back for more.

Johnnalee K.

Yelp
Atmosphere, coffee, and staff all 5/5. We're Corona-quarantining but still trying to (safely) patronize local businesses as much as possible. We stepped into Electric Mud for the first time and were dazzled by the decor (yes I took a few pictures for social media). I was so impressed with the social distancing steps they've taken including markers for how far apart people can safely line up. Asked the barista for a recommendation and he told us to try a mocha with barrel-aged espresso. It more or less changed my life ;) now it's my new coffee obsession. Barista was very knowledgable about the coffee and the company, and was also friendly and positive, which is such a bright spot in these dark days of COVID-19 and social distancing. Pay this place a visit ASAP, especially if you need a safe trip out of the house during lockdown!

Heather L.

Yelp
I loved it in here. The baristas were very friendly and helpful. I loved my nasal chai latte. It was perfect! There was also a selection of pastries both savory and sweet. It also looks like they have breakfast tacos on the weekends. It was bright, colorful and full of plants. For a Chicagoan in the winter it felt so nice. The cafe is music themed with music stands for menu signs. It's a small spot but people filter in and out, so it wasn't too crowded. There's a long bench across a wall to wait for your drink or park your stroller to hang out with a toddler. It was just a nice experience all around.

Elise K.

Yelp
Every DMC location is so dang cool. This one is especially moody and vibey. Great staff, and beautiful latte art every time. Love love love Electric Mud!

Ryan D.

Yelp
I go here about once a week. They have fun espresso-based drinks, good coffee and tea, and delicious donuts from Do-Rite donuts - a Chicago favorite. Their espresso may be a bit on the dark side for some, in which case the barrel aged option is a tasty alternative. I order with the Joe app and it's usually done in about 10 minutes. Highly recommended!

Crystal K.

Yelp
I ordered the Awake and bake latte which had maple syrup, sage, and black pepper. The latte had a nice kick to it, which I liked. The space of the cafe is rather limited, there's 3 small tables in the front and one table in the back. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable about coffee. This is a place that's worth checking out. A side note, I'm a fan of the eclectic neon sign!

IhnJoon H.

Yelp
This place knows their coffee! They have great pour overs for $4 and it's worth it! I didn't try their espresso, but I highly recommend the pour over. The baristas are supEr-friendly and knowledgeable. I ended up buying their "fuego" beans and I am more than excited to try it! If you're looking for amazing coffee, then look no furtherr!

Monk M.

Yelp
Coffee here was horrible. Shots of espresso were bitter with horrible flavor and a pour over sucked too!

Siri M.

Yelp
A cute little coffee shop that is conveniently located. Loved my chai latte and ham and cheese croissant. Not sure if I'd recommend it for working as seating is limited and the music is a bit loud.

Lauren F.

Yelp
Love the ambiance. Real coffee lovers will LOVE it. This is a place that can make you feel like a regular on your first visit. They usually have a tasty GF baked option near the register. Don't miss it!

Charles B.

Yelp
A+++ coffee. I love this little hole-in-the-wall. A great stop just off the blue line. Amazing company I advocate everyone supporting.

Morgan W.

Yelp
The coffee here is really great and if you're just getting some and leaving this is the perfect place! However, there is very limited seating (6 tables) and only one outlet so if you're trying to work remotely this isn't the right place. The workers are very kind.

Michael B.

Yelp
This place just opened. Literally this weekend, I just created their page. Love that they serve dark matter coffee! Reasonably priced and definitely tasty. I look forward to my second time coming here!

Jace C.

Yelp
Dark Matter is by far my favorite coffee in Chicago. This is the latest shop to open , Electric Mud, Dark Matter's awesome Logan Square spot by the Western Blue line. The blues theme is pretty awesome. The Buddy Guy's polka dot guitar influence can be found on the espresso machine. Definitely try the awesome locally roasted coffees on your way to running to catch the L.

Paul H.

Yelp
Went here for the first time on Saturday and it was so packed. Luckily a table near the window was opening up and one of the very nice people that works there let me know so I could sit down and relax and enjoy my delicious coffee! Between that and some other things I could see why they have a reputation for having such friendly service there on top of the great coffee.

U R.

Yelp
"Bucktown Square Area" (where Logan Square and Bucktown find their axis) is now serving up some Dark Matter! Pretty good cup. The coffee was tasty and strong. Nice and strong! Although, the thoughts grew as the sips progressed, "is it either too nutty or almost semi burnt?". It was in no way bad though but they should make sure they improve on any reasons behind that slightly detectable flavor. They should also ask if people want room for cream so they don't get skimped. The Barista was kind and attentive. The bench is a nice comfort to have while waiting. Let's see how the cups at this location progress!

Brian G.

Yelp
Came here on opening day at the end of the night and it was still amazing! Had the hopped chocolate city(cold brew+hops) which sounds weird but was really good Also had the alfajores(cookies w/ dulce de leche) at the front counter which are available at most dark matter locations and should not be missed!

Maria M.

Yelp
The best gift granted to coffee lovers in this area. Dark Matter coffee is top notch. Some of the best, if not best, local coffee. Shout out to Maria as well; not only one of the best baristas around but also one of the kindest! During COVID, they have been spectacular. Getting a mobile app (Joe's) and allowing one person in the store at a time. Now If you order through the mobile app you can do your own one in, one out line to pick up your order so makes it move faster.

Veronica S.

Yelp
We have been trying to visit all of our local businesses as much as possible during these trying times, so periodically I drop in to Electric Mud for some coffee while J does his weekly comic book run across the street at Challengers. It's a small place, and currently they only let one person in at a time, which might be problem if you're in a hurry and there's a line, but I've only had to wait, at most, five minutes to get in. They do have online ordering, which I've never used, so it's probably a good idea to order ahead of time, and just pick up. The Dark Matter coffee is typically priced for a Chicago coffee shop, but it's delicious, so I don't mind spending the five dollars with tip every once in a while. Service is friendly and efficient. And they also sell bags of prepackaged coffee to take away.

Cassidy K.

Yelp
One of the best places I've been to in the United States for coffee! Their honey latte is one for the books, complete with an ambience you've been waiting for since you stopped to visit in Chicago.

Allison L.

Yelp
Used to come here a lot because I love the coffee. There was a barista with pink hair that was so sweet and welcoming- She was awesome. The staff now are so rude, it's annoying. I received a gift card from my boss but I don't enjoy going because it's a less than unpleasant experience. The barista who is a bigger guy with a ponytail is so rude... don't be in a customer service industry if you can't even pretend to be polite.

Meghan T.

Yelp
Love these guys. Everyone that works here is so nice, they have bombbbb coffee, and their merchandise is rad as hell. My boyfriend goes almost every morning and try to do the same when I'm in town if I can make it out of bed!

Gaby S.

Yelp
dark matter is my favorite coffee roaster in chicago - and electric mud is one of my favorite places to get that sweet bean juice. everyone who works here is a true homie, i always look forward to the nice interactions i have with the baristas here. electric mud forever!

John B.

Yelp
Relatively new to the neighborhood. They make a great cup of coffee (bottomless if you camp out there) and a very friendly staff.
