We had planned to grab some late lunch at the Elephant & Castle (E&C) following our tours of the Smithsonian museums on the National Mall. Fortunately, the Elephant & Castle is within walking distance from that area -- no more than about 10 minutes (probably less if you book it). Overall, our experience was ok. I felt the service could have been faster due to not seeing our server make the rounds to our area that often and there being a little bit of a wait between taking our drink order, then our food order, then receiving our drinks and later our food.
The E&C overall is a nice British Pub chain that has a good ambiance that radiates what you would expect from such a pub between the dark cherry wooden flourishes from the bar area to the various seating areas, the imported beer mirrors and pictures, the selection of imported beers and themed cocktails, and the fare.
The bangers and mash were pretty good with the gravy. The sausage rolls were also fairly solid and devoured quickly. The cocktails were alright such as the Penicillin (Laphroaig 10yr scotch, ginger liqueur, fresh lemon juice, honey syrup) and the Bee's Knees (Beefeater gin, lemon juice, honey syrup & lemon twist). My wife enjoyed the Negroni Spritz (Tanqueray gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, bitters, sparkling wine & a splash of soda). Also the Irish Coffee was tasty when I had my dessert (Bailey's Cheesecake).
However, the one thing that brought down the experience was the service. While football games were being broadcast in the backrooms, I felt our server disappeared from our areas for longer blocks of time to where we had to look for him when we wanted our check. That made the experience a bit frustrating when we wanted to first start ordering, ask for more cocktails and water especially.
