Lincoln Tap Is Michigan’s First Self-Serving Taproom in Royal Oak | Eater Detroit

"Opened this month in Royal Oak as Michigan’s first self‑serving taproom, this 17,000‑square‑foot venue was launched by the brewers behind Eastern Market Brewing Co. after signing a five‑year lease for the former Roak Brewing Company space. The concept leverages a recent change to the state liquor code (Senate Bill 656) that allows tabletop and wall‑mounted taps, enabling a self‑pour experience and representing the brewery’s latest local expansion." - Serena Maria Daniels

Google
The beers from Eastern Market Brewing and Ferndale Project are great, as is the Detroit-style pizza. If you're a beer geek (and i most certainly am), the opportunity to try a bunch of beers in one sitting without getting bombed is always attractive.

Jacob P.

Google
The employees were very kind and helpful. The method of securing your food and pouring drinks is fun. The pizza is probably some of the best Detroit style I have ever had (I eat ALOT). They also have great NA beer options for those who do not partake. Would recommend!

J S.

Google
Yummy pizza! Their Detroit style pizza is very good, nice crust with tasty sauce. The beer selection is good. This is a self service location where you pay by the ounce and serve yourself. Its nice to have options and taste a wide variety. But you do all the work so it doesn't seem right that they ask for a tip at the end.

Anya

Google
Love it! Haven't been here since the last owners, the new establishment is great. They have pay by ounce self-service, so you can try all their brews before making a selection. The garlic parmesan fries were delicious! There are also board/table games available. Will be back!

Google
How an organization reacts to issues says a lot about their ethos. In this case I was bummed it wasn't ideal, however I was more impressed with their handling and other aspects. While our pizza was undercooked, it didn't diminish my opinion and still a revisit is warranted. Its apparent they use high quality ingredients and craftsmanship. At least the perimeter of my pizza was cooked and scrumptious. I showed them the undercooked inner crust and they proactively took action to ensure we were satisfied. Thank you! We were fully compensated...even items not effected, (beer); which leads me to my next thoughts. They use a novel solution for beverage distribution. After a quick ID check they give you RF wrist band and use it to tap your libation of choice and then you proceed to a DIY pour (prices indicated in oz.). This makes getting drinks way more efficient. While I only sampled one beer, it was a great local craft beer from Detroit's Eastern Market. The selection choice is vast (see pics). Lastly I wanted to mention the environment has a very cool, relaxed vibe, great sound system, and various board games are available. Our 8 year old son loved that. High ceilings and a dark motif adds to a cozy, yet not cramped feel. It's an elevated lounge atmosphere with an outside patio located a stone's throw from the Royal Oak downtown. Despite our initial hiccup I plan to revisit soon.

Google
If you’re looking for refreshing air conditioned place to go after roasting at the zoo… don’t go here. We spent a majority of the day at the zoo in 90 degree heat. We were looking forward to a refreshing beer, food and nice atmosphere. However, it was 87 degrees inside. The food was good, the beer was good, but it was way too hot. Also, the bathroom sink was auto touch and the temp was scolding hot. We visited this location mid day on a Sunday, there was no one there. No kidding.

Mike H.

Google
Fantastic pizza. Really good wings. Beer options are great too. A little dark in there for some reason. They have trivia night every Tuesday apparently. Good stuff.

S A.

Google
I have never had anything aside from delicious food and beer here. Even the dairy free cheese on pizza is good! It's a family friendly environment as well, and the self pour system allows you to get a small taste before choosing your favorite.

Yelp
I've been to several iterations of this building/location (Roak, Lincoln Tap, now Elephant & Co) and I think Elephant & Co is my favorite so far. The pour-your-own beer system makes it so easy to try different varieties, and I honestly have yet to have an EMBC or Ferndale Project beer that I haven't liked. They have trivia some nights as well which seems to draw a crowd, and we had fun playing along! Typically I have played Quizzo trivia and they use a different type of trivia game here, but still fun. But the PIZZA. The pizza here is phenomenal. They have really fun toppings and the crust is some of the best Detroit-style crust I've had (...maybe the best?). If you don't try the pizza you are missing. out.

Yelp
Came on Dream Cruise weekend (Sunday around 2pm) there were only a few people in the place - not sure if that's how Sundays normally are or if it was because of the cruise. Tried the chicken salad sandwich and garlic parm fries. Both were really good. Self serve beer wall, water for non-beer drinkers. I'm not a huge beer lover but I tried a pineapple ale and a cherry sour, both were yummy. First glass I pulled to fill had lipstick prints on it so maybe a washing issue? Grabbed another one and it was lip print free. Music was loud for the big space and maybe it seemed louder because it was pretty empty inside?

Yelp
Service was very friendly and helpful. It was are first time here so the walked us through how everything worked. Great Wall of craft beers. The pour your own and pay per ounce was great. Allows you to try before you commit to a beer. Seating was community style long picnic tables. Tv made it a great place to catch a game. The food was amazing. Some of the best Detroit style pizza hands down. Better than Shields and Buddy's for sure. Will definitely return.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
PSA: before summer is over, get yourself to the Royal Oak location, secure a seat on the patio, boop the beer dispensing machine for something really refreshing, and mow down on the chicken salad sandwich + parm fries. It is absolutely perfect in every way. It's on a house-made PRETZEL for goodness sake. Okay. That's all.
google avatar

Mara W.

Yelp
We had a great time. Cool experience. Tasted a few of the taps. The strawberry wine and cherry craft were my favorites. The pizza was delicious; I had the pear one. We also tried pepperoni pizza and the sauce has a bit of heat to it. They didn't have anything non alcoholic but water and kombucha...definitely need lemonade or fruit punch or something. The music was good too. Looking forward to visiting during the warmer months; the outside area looked very nice! Service was great; very attentive and explained the process.

Yelp
Awesome spot! Great beers and pizza was fire!!!! Went to the RO Location. Atmosphere, Cleanliness, Decor, Food and Beer was all on point! The 32oz max was weird cause we were there for about 2 hours so. 2 pints each??
google avatar

Suzzette M.

Yelp
Very cool space! One of, if not the best Detroit style pizzas I have ever had. So much flavor, crisp crust, spicy pepperoni, perfect bake! The homemade ranch was also great!
google avatar

Aaron C.

Yelp
Awesome self serve brewery with some of the best Detroit style pizza! I like the uniqueness of the fermentation of the crust, the pizzas loaded with cheese and taste amazing and they have some awesome pizzas to choose from!
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
First, Justin, at the desk, is ah. Maze. Ing. I have a weird allergy and called in advance. Justin himself took our order so that I would be safe. NO restaurant has ever done that so we're now loyal customers forever just for that. Second, the pizza is outstanding. We had the Magherita, the Fungi, and the Spicy Pepperoni and all were delish. The CRUST!!! Holy focaccia, it's magnificent The self tap beer is genius and easy to use. Mine was the orange and it was yummy. Be aware that tables are communal so you'll make friends. My one suggestion is to place the QR code stickers all along the tables. We had to reach over folks and that was awkward. For our 3 it was 6 thumbs way up!
google avatar

Lexie V.

Yelp
So here's the rundown, you can order your pizza at the front or by the QR code on the table but you will need to go to the front to get your wristband for the self pour. Laws limit you to 32 ounces before you have to check back at the front to many sure you shouldn't be cut off. They had almost all the beers good to go, with a few tapped out. Tasty beers! We came for the special fall pizza they advertised but due to staffing they ended up not having it. So we got the meatball and it was delish - whipped herbed ricotta on top? Say less! The chicken finger platter was good too, we got it for my daughter but it was yummy and had the dill seasoning on it Like at Ferndale project (though subtle) with amazing ranch I love how places like this always draw in parents who need a drink haha there were a few other littles like mine that were around -(they were not disruptive or running around) but our family was in good company. There are long tables meant for groups to share, and barrels with barstools for smaller parties. When we went some people didn't seem to understand the long tables could have more than one party lol so, share the space y'all! It was a very chill environment, felt like a week night rather than a Saturday night, but also that was nice because we got seats right away. The staff was very friendly and you could tell they were working hard being understaffed but had great attitudes

Barry M.

Yelp
A smorgasbord of beer!! What a great place, you get to pour your own beer! They have over 20 handles of draft beer to choose from. I tried 6 different styles of beer and settled on the Elephant IPA. Being a home brewer this kind of place is right up my alley!!! When you enter the building the sweat smell of pizza was so overwhelming that we decided to change our plans for dinner and stayed there to eat!! We ordered a cheese pizza and the spicy pepperoni!! It was outstanding! The employees were very helpful and kind!! We will definitely be coming back next time we come to Detroit!!

Yelp
I live right by here, so I was very happy to see the old ROAK loction get used. My brother and I finally came in to try it. First off, the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Explaining how the ordering and syuch works. Our food was very good, and the beers were also good. They could be a bit colder, but then iot was not very full when we came in so we make have just gotten the beer sitting in the lines... it waent warm, just not as cold as we would have liked. The atmosphere was really good as well. The downside? Their ordering system is...well, it's not simple. I know places want to use tablets and the like, but when you complicate the ordering with some procedure, it's a little off-puttong. It is also not a cheap place. Chicken strips, pizza (which was VERY good) and two beers and two soft drinks were pretty expensive. We may well come back, but not nearly as often. Also, when we looked into the bill to see what things cost, there was no easy way to look it up. They had to email my brother the bill. It all checked out and made sense when we saw it, but the lack of a simple bill where we could just see what we were being charged for what was also offputting. Overll though, we were not dissapointed. If the ordering and billing was more straight forward it would be 5 stars. -1 for the over complication but the food and service was great. Oh, and the manager was very polite, friendly and patient when we wanted to see out bill and made sure we did get it through email. So again, staff get 5 stars. I am confident that the problems we had are sure to be worked out in the futire

Yelp
Update: We went in person on a 95 degree day and that was a mistake - no air conditioning. Despite a floor fan it was sweltering and all the beverages were lukewarm as well. We will not make that mistake again - it's takeout from here on out!
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
Crust was crunchy at the bottom, and perfectly fluffy on the top. The sauce was flavored wonderfully. Perfectly spicy, and evenly distributed. All in all, one of the best pizzas I have ever had. Great non-alcohol options for beer.
google avatar

Melissa M.

Yelp
We came here on trivia night. I hadn't been here in probably a year or so and I was pleasantly surprised that they added a kitchen. The pizza we had was outstanding. The only thing I don't like is how they expect you to have even though they don't really do much and you pour your own beers. Also, I hate the seating and I wish they would switch to normal tables so you don't feel obligated to sit next to strangers and be in their conversation.
google avatar

Dylan O.

Yelp
Very good Detroit style pizza!! Didn't get any beer on tap unfortunately but they all look delicious. The place has a nice open air design and is very casual and easy to get in and out of
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
This place is a shell compared to the previous place. The brewery that was here prior to elephant and company had ambiance. This has a Hall with a couple tables in it. For a tasting room I would expect flight glasses to go along with the full size glasses. There were none to be found. The gentleman at the front counter explain to me how things worked and of course was very open for any questions that I had, but it was pretty self-explanatory. I probably tried 10 of their selections, all very nondescript and pretty much mediocre. How are the pizza did look good and I think that's why people go there, I can't see spending the entire evening there as a date or anything else. The armbands are turned in to a basket on the counter that is open to the public, which I don't understand why someone wouldn't be able to pick up a band and use it on your account. Someone isn't at the register all the time unlike its counterpart at the North end of Royal Oak. And I was a little taken back for the tip suggestion of 25% on my qr coded bill, when I was the one serving myself. Seems like a money grab. I won't be going back anytime soon.
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
The pizza was delicious but pricey. I loved the crisp edges and will definitely return. Good choices of beer, although there are a few that were out when we went. Nice little outside patio area.

Co M.

Yelp
Unfortunately the beer was meh and lukewarm and the pizza needs to be fixed... the staff was the best part. We will not be returning anytime soon.
google avatar

Ivory S.

Yelp
I was very surprise, the pizzza was delicious, costumer service was great . A pretty good selection of beers, not as cold as I would had like . The ambience was good
google avatar

Sunny N.

Yelp
This is amazing. I got fries, chicken, and a pizza and all were beyond my expectations, they tasted like what I would expect Michelin star food to taste like. Amazing. The staff are so nice, if it's your first time they will explain everything you need to know like what the wristbands are, how to order, and what their beer "Elephant Juice" is. It was amazing. When you walk in there is a beautiful price of art and some games to play while you wait for food. The wait time is like 15-20 minutes but totally worth it. 100/10 would recommend and I am coming back here soon.
google avatar

Caitlin D.

Yelp
They now have great pizza to go with endless beer! This place is such a gem and even better in the summer with the patio more open. Conventionally located just off Royal oak Main Street and with enough parking. Service is good, it's more of a self serve kind of place anyways. But the vibes are cool and atmosphere is usually bustling!

Mark J.

Yelp
I ordered pizza for carry out. It amazed me how many things were wrong with this pizza - I actually thought they gave me the wrong one, but when I read the receipt, they had it completely messed up - over all I give it a D - pizza was just ok, not a great Detroit style pizza and it was just a mess with all the wrong toppings - pretty disappointing and I definitely won't be back!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Great place will definitely be back. Cool atmosphere, love the beer tapper wall and the pizza was really good. Only drawback is the patio is fairly small. Other than that a great place!
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
This pizza was so good!! We decided to take the dogs to Barkside Detroit and we found out that Elephant & Co delivers there for free. We really wanted to try the pierogi pizza, but it was sold out so we went for the spicy meatball. It was delicious. The crust was crunchy and airy and the sauce had good flavor. The spicy sauce on top was unique. (It wasn't that spicy to me, though). The chunks of meatballs were huge and it had a great taste. We will definitely order this again.

Ari K.

Yelp
Just recently moved to Royal oak and tried this place out ... AMAZING! Pizza and cheese bread were to die for!! Will be back!
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
Stopped in yesterday for the first time since it was Roak. I really like the self serve style that they have there. They feature the beers from Eastern Market and Ferndale project with variety including sours, stouts, IPA, etc. there were even seltzers and wine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Unlike most other locations in Royal Oak, parking is great here as they have their own lot.

Todd G.

Yelp
Great Pizza choices - Loved it. Also huge beer selection. Great food- cool place. We actually could not decide on which pizza we wanted to we ordered a couple and took home leftovers.
google avatar

Kaela K.

Yelp
A new favorite place to drink in RO. Lincoln Tap has around 30 self pour taps with beers featured from Eastern Market Brewing Co, Ferndale Project, etc. How it works: you give them your card, they give you a wristband linked to your card with an e-tag that you touch to each tap. Every tap has a price per ounce (ranging from around 40-70 cents/ounce). The iPour system will tell you how many ounces you've poured, as well as your overall total ounces. After each drink, you put the glass away in a bin off to the side. When you're ready to tab out, you go up to the front area, get your card back and are able to tip if you would like to. It is also bring your own food - which is nice considering Downtown RO has many options. Most taps are IPAs. There were a few stouts, pale ales, one N/A beer, and two wine selections (a strawberry wine and a sauv blanc). Highly recommend for a fun spot with friends.
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
When the taproom is full the used glass rack drips old beer all over the floor, around the rack area. And it is very near the tapwall.
google avatar

Mj J.

Yelp
What a cool addition to the tap house scene! Located in a former brewery, Lincoln Tap has been transformed into a neighborhood self-serve tap room. The space is quite large with a modern, rustic decor, long communal tables unite patrons, a few high tops are scattered around, and the retractable door gives access to an out door area. Recently opened, the tap house is on slam! If you haven't had a chance to check it out, stop by and enjoy one of the many beers on tap!
google avatar

Sari G.

Yelp
This place is such a cool space. It's a bit quiet in here though. They need more upbeat music. They could also use some lite bites. It smelled a little strange when we walked in. It was not very busy either for a Thursday. The seltzer tasted flat. I had a great campfire s'mores beer. They ask for gratuity when it's pour your own beer. That's a little weird. I think this place could be improved. Add some food or at least a dessert menu or grab and go style food if you're trying to keep it self serve. Music needs to be louder if there's only 2 tables in here. Get some games! Also, big pro is free parking!
google avatar

Judy P.

Yelp
Very fun new addition to Royal Oak. 25+ beers to try! The only reason I'm giving 4 stars is because app or non-kitchen snacks would be ideal! Also individual glass washers would help with being eco friendly. Overall an Eastern Market success.
google avatar

Georgia M.

Yelp
This place is good! Met up with my parents for some drinks. Very self explanatory and easy because you give your credit card and ID for a wristband. You use the wristband at the taps to pour your drink. You're limited to 32 ozs before you have to check in with the staff (basically make sure you're not too drunk). Communal picnic style seating. Some of the beers are just ok, fun vibe though!
google avatar

Charles B.

Yelp
We went here for the first time since it became Elephant and Co. It has the same great vibes we got from the old owner with the bonus of self-service drinks and food. The drink system is unique but much appreciated. You can go up and get your own drinks when you are ready, there's no need to wait for a server. Bonus, when you are ready to leave you can split the bill online and pay. My only demerit is the drink selection was very IPA heavy. I am a very well rounded craft beer drinker and a variety would have been more welcome. We ordered the Spicy Pepperoni pizza with basil and the cheese bread. Both were amazing options. We will definitely return for another round.

Walt B.

Yelp
Small place. Limited staff. Small limited food menu. Small selection of taps, no ciders.

Kim K.

Yelp
Best pizza we've ever had! Love that they offer a vegan option for our adult kids.

Scott K.

Yelp
Deep dish pizza is made to order and delicious! CAUTION: The sauce comes with crushed red pepper flakes and is hot and spicy! You must request the "baby " sauce, which is sweeter and NO pepper flakes The beer wall is top notch abundant Elephant Juice varieties on tap. Warehouse picnic table style seating with several tv screens to watch the Lions screw up at home....fortunately, the beer wall is consistent
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our first visit to Lincoln Tap. With about 30 taps, it's easy to find something you like. Upon arrival, check in at the counter to hand over a credit/debit card, show the IDs in your party, and get your bracelets. Pouring our own is easy, and get charged for what you pouit. 1. Take a fresh glass, a determine which tap you want to try 2. Place the glass under the tap at 45 degrees, and pull the tap 3. Scan your bracelet and it begins to flow...First timers, it will show you a video on the first scan and you will repeat steps 1 & 2 before it will flow. 4. When you have poured enough to your liking, push the tap back 5. Sit and enjoy. 6. When you are ready for another, deposit the used glass in the racks to the right of the taps, grab a fresh glass, and repeat. That simple! We love it as it allows us to try a variety of beers. For those that prefer a glass of wine, they do have a couple selections. One thing that we found odd is that upon cashout, the receipt does have a place for a tip...but they didn't serve anything, collect dirty glasses, etc....so, we didn't find it necessary.
google avatar

Dustin H.

Yelp
Great new spot to grab a beer! My wife and I walked over to check it out because we saw the doors open and love the beer selection! You get wrist bands electronically tied to your credit card and you scan the wrist band at the tap to pour your drink. It's billed by the ounce so you can try everything. We will definitely be back and glad it came to our neighborhood!
google avatar

Larry R.

Yelp
Well...if you like drinking your beer in a daycare center, this is the place for you. Capacity is only 49 people and unfortunately for this business a 1/4 of that qty. was taken up by non-drinking toddlers whose family took over full tables with crayons and cheerios. This place should definitely switch to 21 and over. No food yet, but they are working on it. Kitchen is already in place. Beer selection is very IPA-heavy (makes sense, since this is a EMB/Ferndale Project) location. They also have 2 wine taps, but did not see any non-alcoholic drinks available. I will give it a couple of weeks and give it another try.

Chennetta R.

Yelp
Service, drinks and ambiance is amazing can't wait to do it again. Will eat try food next time!

Michael Y.

Yelp
A few weeks back I was watching the Lions game with some friends at Eastern Market Brewing and a few friends had ordered Elephant & Co. pizzas as they were soft-launching their pizza-beer collaboration/delivery business with Eastern Market Brewing. I tried to order a pizza, but the kitchen was closed for the night. However, the delivery driver (who I think is also an owner) was so kind to give me a test pizza that she kept with her--for FREE. The pizza itself was very tasty Detroit-style pizza. The fact that she was willing to do that for me because she saw how much I wanted to order and eat it was an unexpected kind gesture. My friends and I were all shocked, and we all loved the pizza (which we shared all around). I will certainly be eating more Elephant & Co. pizza the next time I'm at Eastern Market Brewing (or at the Elephant and Co. Royal Oak location if they have the pizza there), and this time I'll be very happy to be able to pay for it and support their business.

Jeff P.

Yelp
Awesome pizza with new specialties all the time. The taproom is casual and laid back. Nice selection of Eastern Market Beer and a couple non-beer offerings too!
google avatar

Kayla S.

Yelp
Used to be ROAK brewery, I never knew this place opened back up and renamed until my friend and I were searching on Yelp of places to go. It's more discrete as there isn't really any signs out front. This place is amazing. Typical brewery environment. Large tables with people playing games. Seating is somewhat limited so keep that in mind when going with large groups. You are allowed to bring your own food in since they do not provide. Super excited to check this place out in the summer months!

Mary V.

Yelp
Looked forward to trying this deep dish pizza- 40 minute wait for cold pizza. Disappointing.
google avatar

Richard W.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with putting this business in your rotation 5 Stars in every aspect
google avatar

Ryan L.

Yelp
Nice spot with a cool concept, just poor execution. It's a nice roomy brewery with a good amount of seating and a "pour your own beer pay by the ounce concept" the issue here is on a Saturday night when we called ahead for a larger party weeks ahead of time they just weren't prepared to even be open. They had about 15 beer/seltzer options and about 10 or 11 were unavailable for the entire night. So for a place without food and only offers beer to only have you a few of your unpopular options available on at Saturday night at 6pm just doesn't seem right. Again cool spot but bad management and execution for sure.

Beth P.

Yelp
What a cool venue! We attended a private event at Elephant & Co for a couples/family baby shower. Being not a beer drinker - I was thankful to have at least one wine choice - a nice sauvignon blanc - in the dispensaries. Food was brought in...The physical building is very industrial - not huge - but comfortable.
