23 Exemplary Chinese Soup Dumplings in NYC

"DD is a dumpling shop turned into a full service restaurant, offering a broad range of chicken, shrimp, and vegetarian dumplings, in addition to Japanese teriyaki specialties including a dozen types of skewers. Yet the heart of the menu remains xiao long bao, in the expected pork and pork and crab formulations, but also with an unusual loofah stuffing — you know, the hippie back-scrubbing squash, but in its supple green form." - Robert Sietsema

Hell’s Kitchen Is the City’s Newest Chinatown - Eater NY

"A new Taiwanese restaurant, DD specializes in soup dumplings and Japanese hibachi, and just inside the door is a phantasmagorical bar, so the place doubles as a drinking spot. The soup dumplings are very good, and an unusual version stuffed with loofah is available." - Robert Sietsema

Fantastic Thai restaurant just around the corner from Times Square, super convenient if you’re in Midtown. The space is clean, modern, and welcoming. I love the green curry, short ribs, and papaya salad, and all three were incredible. The flavors were so authentic they instantly reminded me of my trip to Bali. Everything was fresh, balanced, and beautifully presented. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered takeout the very next day. Highly recommend if you’re craving great Thai food in the city!!❤️❤️

Google
This restaurant near Times Square, in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood has some delicious dishes. It has such a vibrant atmosphere and very kind staff. I really enjoyed my meal here. Some favorite dishes of mine included the crying tiger with garlic rice which was so delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and that garlicky taste was fantastic. The soft shell crab weigh red curry was also a standout. The curry was flavorful and rich and the soft shell crab was crunchy and delicious. The pandan drink was also light and sweet but not too sweet! Definitely check this spot out when you’re in the area!

I took my family for dinner here. It was a great experience. The portions are generous and the taste of the food is very nice. They do not have some of the classics in the menu such as Ka Praw stir fried. However, the mango salad and the green curry chicken are a must to try. The service is attentive but do not expect a fine dinning experience. They are decently good for what they offer. Well done.

This restaurant is great! The food was amazing, friendly and attentive service and great ambiance. They sat us right away and food came out quickly. We ordered the drunken noodles and the red curry with beef. Both with great flavor and good portions!

Google
Restaurant - We went during lunch, and it wasn't crowded at all. The place is huge but very clean, and the interior is beautifully decorated. Food - Papaya salad was 10/10. For an appetizer, they put a lot of papaya salad. It was very flavorful. The elephant roast combo was 8/10; a bit overpriced but not bad. The pineapple fried rice comes in a carved out pineapple and was super filling. 9/10. The drunken noodles were the highlight. So umami and rich and not too greasy. 9/10. Service - The servers were very nice and attentive. You can choose the meat for the rice and noodle dishes, or keep them vegetarian.

Ended up coming here for my birthday lunch and our server Hazel was very kind. The crying tiger was really tasty and juicy. The mango sticky rice was also amazing. Definitely recommend!

Google
Visiting NY and Came here on a whim right at opening. The staff was so nice. The food was really good. We got the ribeye drunken noodles, mussels, pork belly and thai basil fried rice. Did not love the mussels but the broth it was in was so good. The rest of the food was good. I love that the menu was concise and all the food just tasted fresh. Would return for the amazing staff and food. Thanks so much.

Google
Great food, service, and atmosphere. We got the Elephant roast combo, Crispy pork belly with chilli and basil, Drunken noodle, and Thai sweet plate. The staff were pretty accommodating too. All in all, would visit again.

Yelp
For appetizers, we indulged in their enticing Elephant Roast Combo, which includes a variety of small bites, alongside the unique Minced Chicken in Pani Puri. For the main course, we indulged in the rich flavors of Pineapple CurryDuck and the succulent Green Curry Ribeye. Let me tell you, all of the dishes were crafted to perfection. We concluded our meal with the delightful Thai Sweet Combo for a perfect Thai dessert experience--it's a heavenly finish to this unforgettable dining experience! Definitely check them out for an authentic Thai cuisine!

Yelp
Really enjoyed our meal here. Food was great. Large portions. Everything was tasty. We had the papaya salad, whole fried tamarind Branzino, and the mixed seafood with salted duck egg sauce. I liked that the entrees came with plenty of veggies. The restaurant was spacious. Service was great. Will definitely come back!

Yelp
The combo appetizer plate had chicken satay, beef satay, spring rolls, and shrimp chips. Loved this assortment! The pani puri dish wowed us because it is traditionally an Indian dish, but the Thai twist on it worked so well.Their curry was thick and mildly spicy, while the salty duck egg smothered the mixed seafood dish, adding such a unique umami flavor. They have lots of tables inside and it's super new and clean. The service was good for a busy Friday night as well. I personally would skip on the dessert. The sticky rice was a bit salty, which wasn't my favorite, but everything else was good!

Yelp
I was so pleasantly surprised. Elephant Ear is a solid Thai spot in Hell's Kitchen! The food is very tasty and the wait time on orders is well timed. The service is quite good. The restaurant itself is sleek and modern. If I find myself in Hell's Kitchen again, I'd be happy to go back!

Yelp
This is a new Thai place that has opened in Hell's Kitchen. It is a very pleasant, warm space and I was seated immediately and water was brought to the table. I was given a menu at the same time. I decided on the Drunken noodles which you can order with chicken, seafood or vegetables. I decided on the seafood. My food arrived shortly, nice and hotel and had just the right amount of kick to it. It was delicious and filling. The waiter will ask you how hot you want your meal on a scale of one to ten-this I think is better than just saying mild, medium or spicy since it gives them a better idea as to how spicy to prepare your food. The woman who sat me as well as the waiter were very pleasant and accommodating and it is reasonably priced for the area. I would recommend and return.

Yelp
I saw this spot on instagram and had to check it out. When I arrived afterwork it was lively. I was only shocked because it was a Tuesday night and it was pretty cold out. But you can tell it's a local favorite. The space is cozy but can definitely fit a small group. I was here catching up with a friend and we were comfortable, and took our time. The drinks get a strong mention here because they were strong. If you're into mezcal, you have to try the Thai Me Up cocktail--it's smoky and hits just the right balance, which I loved. For food, the appetizers are big enough for sharing. The short rib entrée was a total winner--super tender and flavorful. The crispy duck curry was also really good, though I wasn't crazy about the curry lychee in it (personal preference, though). The curry itself is still rich and comforting. Even though it was a bit crowded the staff kept things running smoothly, so we didn't have to wait for anything. Overall, it's a great place to enjoy delicious food, fun drinks, and just a good time with friends or date night.

Yelp
There are so many restaurants in HK, and here comes another--Elephant Ear. Honestly, I think the Thai restaurants in HK are trying to one up each other because Elephant Ear is really brining it! We started with some drinks from the bar, which were made just right! We told them less syrup, and the bartender made them just right. Next up were appetizers. Get the wing--they are tasty and they give you so many!! Also good is the grilled shrimp app. For entrées we got the Red Curry w/ Chicken and the Ribeye dish with garlic rice. Both were very tasty! If you're in HK and want good (and unique)Thai without waiting in line, check this place out. Once the word gets out, I'm sure the lines will be longer.

Yelp
This is a new Thai spot that just opened up in Hells Kitchen (I was here over a decade ago, back when it was Room Service), and it's gorgeous! I love the elephant decor! They start you off with a complimentary box of appetizers (shrimp chips, pickled veggies, etc-so cute!). I had the veggie & tofu drunken noodles as my main dish, which had a good spice to it (but ask for some chili sauce if you want to amp up the heat even more). The hot butterfly pea tea, which came with honey and lemons, was also perfect for a cold night out. The service here was superb, too.

Yelp
The food and service was excellent. The staff is so friendly, smiling and just very good people. The food was delicious. The steam sea bass was light and refreshing and the flavor is focused on the fish. The eggplant and duck we could not get enough off. The mango sticky rice is not sweet which we really enjoyed because the focus was on natural coconut taste. I think for this dessert it really depends if one has a sweet tooth. If you lean towards sweet, you may not enjoy this as much. I'm definitely coming back to try more dishes.

Yelp
Elephant Ear is a super cute new Thai place!! The menu is short and sweet, and both the items we tried were pretty good. Our favorite was the Avocado Mango Salad, it was so refreshing and yummy. Service was fine, we were seated right away -- the space was a little tight though. I'd love to come again to try their extensive drinks menu!

Yelp
Such a yummy Thai spot in Hell's Kitchen! Went with friends for a birthday dinner. The staff was so lovely and helpful with food and drink recommendations! They had some really unique drinks that were Thai inspired, all very delicious. The food was so good and the presentation was great!
google avatar

Yelp
Some strong dishes, but balanced with some average ones. Their branzino was really well cooked and since it was made two ways, was really enjoyable. However the pad thai was too sweet and soggy. I think they're still fairly new, so hopefully they can iron things out to stand out in all the competition in HK for Thai food.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
All the dishes we had were delicious. The papaya salad was seasoned with the perfect balance of heat and sweet. Our only complaint was that the lemongrass chicken had a lot of shredded lemongrass fiber sprinkled on top, evidently as garnish. Of course it's like straw and inedible so we ended up picking it all out. The flavor was excellent though. Overall, recommended.

Yelp
Great new Thai addition in hell's kitchen! The service is quick and friendly and the food is delicious. We loved the chicken wing appetizer! We also enjoyed all of our entrees (solid noodle dishes). The ambiance is dim and modern - it's easy to talk to each other as it's not too loud. Definitely worth checking out
google avatar

Yelp
Really solid Thai food. I had green curry with tofu and vegetables. The tofu had a bit of a spongy texture which was good at absorbing the curry. There was also a nice variety of vegetables as well, and the dish came with rice. It came out to around $20 with tax, which is pretty standard for the neighborhood.

Yelp
What a vibe this place is? Beautiful. The drinks are a must. I loved the Pandan drink. The elephant roast combo is fun and pretty. Loved the chicken balls and spring rolls. They also start you off with a free snack tray. The pickled veggies are epic. Can they bottle that up and sell it please? We ordered the Sautéed Tiger Shrimp, The Pineapple Duck Curry, and the Crispy Pork Belly chili holy Basil. All was perfect. The dessert was outstanding. Oolong tea jelly with peanuts and coconut foam blew my mind as were the lychee bobba balls.
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
We went the first week they opened. Ambiance and restaurant was super pretty and clean, which was awesome! The servers were a bit unorganized, but understandable as they had just opened and they probably u got a lot more customers than expected! The lychee thai iced tea was really good and the other items were all pretty decent. They also gave a nice starter tray of small snacks to try which was awesome! I think it was a bit pricey for what it is though, it ended up being ~50 per person for 3 dishes and the lychee thao teas.

Yelp
Exciting new arrival in Hells Kitchen for Thai. While the food is presented elegantly in a very attractive restaurant, nothing we ordered stood out as exceptional. Pretty basic when compared to other similar Thai restaurants in the area but we appreciates their efforts to raise the bar and make the experience a bit more upscale. Service was good with several different servers asking to take our order after it had been taken. Worth a visit for a change of venue.

Yelp
Hands down the absolute BEST red curry with chicken I have ever had in my life! Wonderfully flavorful and the perfect amount of spice unlike so many that have none. I look forward to trying Elephant Ear again!

Absolutely loved the green curry and tiger steak! Great service, ambiance, and food. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
We walked to Elephant Ear after a Broadway show, which was an easy and pleasant walk through a safe area. The atmosphere was immediately welcoming as was the staff. We were seated at the window table which was quite lovely. The decor is very tropical and modern, the overall vibe is fantastic. Every person from the staff we dealt with was friendly and took remarkable care of us. Water always full, empty plates removed promptly, etc. The food was incredible! Different members of our party ordered curry, noodles and the Branzino. Everyone was delighted with their order, the presentation on all the dishes was excellent. There is a full bar with original and classic cocktails plus a nice wine, beer and sake list. A phenomenal experience- This is a place we will definitely visit again when in NYC.

Yelp
Did not honor Open Table reservation after being 11 minutes late. This violates the open table grace period and was a huge pain in the butt for us. We did our best in the pouring cold rain managing the subway and Christmas crowds with two small kids. They literally told us they didn't have a table because we were too late and then if we wanted to, we could order standing at the host stand being pushed and bumped from other people waiting. HORRIBLE way to treat customers. They also then reported me as a no show which is not what happened.
google avatar

Freddy R.

Yelp
we were there last night. I was a little skeptical at first because the place is brand new. I walked by after work a couple of times and it seemed nice. We had drinks. The food and the drinks were both delicious. The staff was very nice. The place is pretty and clean. People were all very nice. I would definitely recommend and will return.
google avatar

Greg J.

Yelp
Another Thai place in HK?! The more the merrier if they're this good! I had the pork belly with a pandan drink and highly recommend both - the pandan wasn't too sweet and a little coconutty. The pork belly was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Portion sizes are generous

Yelp
We loved our meal here! Really creative dishes. For starters we got a complimentary plate that included spiced nuts, pickled vegetables, and rice chips. The Mango Avocado salad had a nice sweet, sour and spicy balance with a touch of fresh lime juice. The Duck Tamarind was really tasty with slices of perfectly sautéed eggplant. The Tiger Shrimp With Scallop and Squid was perfectly spiced..nice garlic and hot pepper. Loved it! We also had the Steamed Chilean Sea Bass which was served in a tasty broth with glass noodles. It was a really nice flavor contrast to the duck and seafood. All in all the food gets a solid 5 stars. Service was a bit slow and we had to flag the waiter a couple of times. But since this Thai spot is new in the neighborhood, I'm going to let it slide as they're still 'working out the kinks'. (Hey, It's only been a few weeks since they opened and they were all super friendly...which means a lot to me). I think the way they handled a delay with one of our dishes, was commendable. I look forward to going back soon to try other items on the menu.

Yelp
Delicious & affordable with a lovely decor. I may also add that their Lychee Martini is EXCELLENT!

Yelp
Went to Elephant Ear before a show. It was a great, quick option close to Broadway. The pork belly was amazing!

Yelp
Service and food were absolutely wonderful! As well as the ambiance! Just a fabulous time!

Yelp
Great experience! The food had great flavor and came back quickly. Crying Tiger was great - very garlicy. Drunken Noodles with Ribeye was great I asked for extra spicy but could have been spicier for my taste! Mango sticky rice was amazing!

Nathaly O.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant, 10/10 recommend. Our appetizer was really tasty, the Lychee Thai Tea was delicious, and so were the ribeye drunken noodles. The service was amazing, everyone was so attentive, our server, Hein, especially was great! The vibe and ambiance of the restaurant is really cozy and inviting. Could not recommend this restaurant more!

Yelp
My son was crazing Pad Thai so we stopped for an early dinner. Ordered the veggies Pad Thai and the short ribs. My son couldn't handle the heat, the chef was amazing and made him a non-spicy pad dish. He stuffed his face with noodles. The short ribs melted in your mouth and the flavors were impeccable. We will be coming back again. Delicious

Iris R.

Yelp
A pretty new restaurant that is still "working out the kinks" Service is friendly, but a bit awkward and the dishes we ordered were just ok. Menu at this time is also pretty limited.

Mildre O.

Yelp
The food was excellent and the service was great too! Our waiter Hein was so attentive and really helpful. It's without a doubt some of the best Thai food I've ever had. We tried the fried crab and it was so delicious. The restaurant itself is so beautiful, it has a great ambiance. I definitely recommend!!

Nick L.

Yelp
Fabulous and delicious Thai restaurant at a great location. We came as a group for a birthday and they took extra special care of us. We were all thrilled with the experience and will def be back again!

Madeline G.

Yelp
my sister & I found the Elephant Ear while roaming around Hell's Kitchen. Nice decor and attentive staff. Had thai basil minced chicken with crispy pani puri cups and steamed chilean sea bas with glass noodle and the most delicate thai lemongrass kefir tamarind chicken broth. we loved it! look forward to trying more dishes

Meri C.

Yelp
You see a five-star rating for a Thai restaurant and think c'mon, how much better could this place be than any other Thai restaurant? The answer is it just is. I was a skeptic too but every dish we had was a cut above average. The flavors were brighter, a perfect balance of spices, the perfect amount of heat. And it's an ideal spot to go before a performance since it's in the theater district but a bit away from the crowded areas.

Shay R.

Yelp
The ambiance is very nice and welcoming! The chicken pad Thai was amazing!! Lychee martini was great and the best mango sticky rice

Stephanie G.

Yelp
The staff was wonderful. My friends had never had Thai food before and the server was able to give them some recommendations in order to have an authentic experience and patiently answered all their questions. The food was out of this world! I highly recommend the short ribs....I am salivating just thinking about them lol.

Julie D.

Yelp
great ambiance and seating - the chairs are very comfortable and the food is tasty. loved the red curry

Ron T.

Yelp
Great food and service. The crying tiger with garlic rice was delicious. I would definitely recommend.

Chance H.

Yelp
Zach is awesome. what a great environment he created when I arrived into this place. immediately greeted me and told me to have a seat. the decorations in the building are fascinating and beautifully complex from my seat all the way to the bathroom walls. I enjoyed my meal. it was absolutely delicious. Zach informed me that it would be spicy and it was but it was a perfect amount of spice. the musiccccc was so perfectly designed for the atmosphere. I truly enjoyed my experience. now I came on my own so I just ordered a thai tea and an iced coffee and when I saw my bill, it was under 30 dollars and I was amazed for this side of town that I paid my server 100 percent of the tip. awesome place. first experience so great!

Lila Q.

Yelp
Fabuloso. Excelente servicio y excelente comida. Ambiente excelente. All went excepcional.

Horacio O.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The service was abosolutely great and the ambiance was incredible.

Cherrie L.

Yelp
the food was really great! cozy and aesthetic environment for a family dinner and really flavorful dishes. dishes we particularly enjoyed included the crying tiger with garlic rice, the pineapple curry duck, and the stir fried crispy chicken with lemongrass.
