Best Restaurants in Portsmouth, New Hampshire | Eater Boston

"This old-world cafe specializes in breads of all kinds from flaky croissants and savory rosemary focaccia to crispy fresh baguettes. Satisfy your sweet tooth with Egyptian bread pudding, cardamom and orange zest palmiers, and cinnamon rolls or order Mediterranean breakfast and lunch. Elephantine is planning to open a second location in Boston’s Seaport neighborhood in late summer 2025." - Celina Colby

In ancient Egypt, it was a place where ivory, a valuable commodity, was transported. Currently it is a peaceful island in the Nile River. You can see Nubian-style buildings and Nubian people living in peace with animals. There are the Aswan Museum and the ruined Temple of Khnum.

Very beautiful Nubian island without many tourists and shops. The residents are very friendly and the Nubian flair of the people and houses is very nice. Definitely worth a day trip or you can stay in a hotel there. The island consists of a Nubian village, some hotels and restaurants, as well as a museum and an old temple complex with old Nubian ruins. Would stay there again in a heartbeat, we stayed at the Hotel El Amin Guest House right by the ferry with a view to the river and Asswan.

NOT WORTH IT!!! It's a pile of garbage and smells awful. Don't stay there. It's too far from everything, and every time you want to cross the river or leave, they harass you and try to charge exorbitant prices. Even the public ferry is a rip-off; they charged us three times the actual price. Don't eat at the restaurants or risk getting parasites or bacteria. They don't have drinking water, and it's extremely dangerous for tourists' health. DON'T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO AVOID VISITING THIS PLACE. I didn't take photos out of respect for the local culture and privacy, but I wish I had known this before wasting my time in Aswan.

We were lucky enough to have been able to visit a Nubian Village in the Elephantine Island and was a great visit.

Where to start… what a disappointment! The island is neither beautiful nor clean, and everything seems abandoned and in disrepair. It’s hard to understand why this place isn’t better maintained. Sure, it’s quiet, but that’s about the only positive. Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth staying on Elephantine Island or even in Aswan in general, aside from the Temple of Philae and maybe the Nubian village (and that’s a big maybe). The prices are outrageously high compared to other Egyptian cities like Luxor, and the food isn’t great. I definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

It’s amazing to be on a beautiful river ride in the midst of Egyptian desert history and archaeological explorations. A great contrast to most of the historic sites and a great experience.
