A New Initiative Aims to Make Restaurants Hospitable for Breastfeeding Parents | Eater

"A Chicago-based organization launched an initiative called Room at the Table to offer training and support to restaurants and their employees on how to make their dining rooms more welcoming to children and people who are breastfeeding. "From my personal experience, those weeks after you have your baby, you’re so alone and isolated, and all you want to do is feel normal," says Ashley Farrow, the Network’s chief marketing officer. "You don’t know where you can go with your kids, you don’t know where you’re going to feel safe and respected." The program aims to educate workers on the legalities of breastfeeding across the country (49 states have enshrined protections for breastfeeding parents into law) and to offer practical guidance on navigating tricky situations—what to do if another customer complains about someone breastfeeding, how to offer hot water to help warm a child’s bottle, and other low-effort accommodations. Farrow notes, "Breastfeeding is still seen as something that’s inappropriate, and so people think that it has to be done behind closed doors," and adds, "We wanted to make it as low-lift as possible for a restaurant, because if it’s easy to implement, people can actually make it work." "The idea was to give them the confidence to welcome these patrons, and offer insight into how to accommodate any special requests and just educate restaurants on what new parents are going through," she says. Restaurants that join receive a window sticker signaling a welcoming space for breastfeeding parents; so far about 50 restaurants have signed up, with early participants in the home city and growing interest from places in Austin, Durham, and Denver." - Amy McCarthy

Natalie was incredibly helpful and nonjudgmental throughout my breastfeeding journey. She was very supportive and adjusted her advice and recommendations as my goals changed. Her advice was scientifically sound, but she also incorporated some natural based remedies and ideas as well. She was quick to share what was proven medically and what was not “proven”, but could be beneficial while never falling into “quack science” traps. I adored my experience with her and would not hesitate to recommend Natalie to anyone new to breastfeeding or struggling!

Natalie is a wonderful resource, ally and wealth of knowledge about breastfeeding and beyond. My doula recommended her, and we had a virtual prenatal appointment then several home visits after my baby was born. My breastfeeding experience has been overall very smooth, but Natalie made it even better. She was encouraging, validating and provided suggestions and information to help with not just nursing and pumping but also parenting a newborn. It was such a welcome relief to see her in between pediatrician appointments and pepper her with my many questions. I will return to her expertise for future babies and highly recommend her to anyone!

Natalie is incredible, and I don’t know how we would have gotten through our breastfeeding journey without her support! She helped us navigate countless challenges, including a natal tooth, tongue tie, and dairy intolerance. Even with the more “normal” ups and downs of breastfeeding, she was always so affirming, encouraging, and willing to talk through pros and cons of different decisions. Natalie was an invaluable resource for our family, and I cannot recommend her enough!

I honestly don’t know what I would’ve done without Natalie. From the moment we connected, she was warm, supportive, and incredibly knowledgeable. Navigating breastfeeding with my little boy had its challenges, but Natalie made me feel seen, heard, and empowered every step of the way. She has this calm, reassuring presence that instantly puts you at ease, and her expertise is unmatched. Whether it was latch issues, supply concerns, or just emotional support during the tough moments, Natalie was always there with the right advice and so much compassion. Everyone needs a Natalie in their life—truly. She’s not just a lactation consultant; she’s a game-changer, a cheerleader, and an absolute angel during one of the most vulnerable times in a parent's life. I can’t recommend her highly enough. Thank you Natalie!!

I believe any lactating mother in the Denver area should see Natalie, regardless of if their breastfeeding journey is going well or if they have encountered issues. Throughout my breastfeeding journey with two babies, I have leaned on Natalie for support not only with breastfeeding and supply guidance, but also for holistic care of myself and my babies. My first baby had significant growth issues, and Natalie helped our care team pinpoint the issue, advocate for my child, and supported me through the process. There were many moments when it felt like Natalie was the only person on our care team who was on my side, always listening, providing evidence based recommendations and willing to dig through my son's symptoms. Though I only saw her initially in person after my son was born, her extensive email support for the entirety of our journey (1 year) will be something that I am forever grateful for. My son is now thriving, and I attribute a lot of his success to Natalie's hard work, knowledge, and support. I am now about 7 months into breastfeeding my second child, and after my first experience, it was a no-brainer to work with Natalie again. This time around I have not encountered many issues, but whenever something comes up, Natalie always gets back to me promptly with thoughtful, practical, evidence based recommendations that put me at ease and help me navigate various issues. Breastfeeding is hard. While it is a natural process, it also has a myriad of difficulties. All breastfeeding moms should have Natalie in their corner supporting them when they encounter those difficulties.

If you're having any breastfeeding issues email her right now. Natalie was recommended with rave reviews by 2 friends while I was sitting with bleeding nipples cleaning bloody spit up off my nb's pj's contemplating formula. I have been to other lactation consultants before and was told things I could read online, like "nose to nipple" and I didn't get much out of it. Natalie quickly got to the root cause of the problem and created a detailed plan of care for both my and my babies comfort. She explained why things were happening, gave tools to resolve it, and explained the history of anatomy of the issue. During our session I went from being unable to feed my baby directly to comfortably nursing with tools to make things even better in the days and weeks to come. After she left I realized I went from an overwhelmed mom of 2 to calm and optimistic. Seeing her provided a complete 180 on my emotional state and allows me to show up for me and my family how I wanted to.

Natalie was so incredible with helping us through the first several months of parenthood. She was an incredible resource and partner in figuring out how to feed our little one (who really was very little and SGA). Part of her strength is the tons of experience she has with every bottle, pump, and bottle nipple on the market, she had a solution to every problem we would throw at her and could adjust as things evolved. In addition to bottles she also was an expert in the complicated world of breastfeeding, nipple shields, and figuring out how to teach our baby to latch and feed. Finally on top of everything else she is just a very kind, empathetic person, and was available when we were really feeling down and just in need of support or someone to talk to.

Natalie was a huge help to my granddaughter who struggled early on. As a nurse, I was amazed by her expertise, professionalism, and kindness. I highly recommended Natalie!
