Türkiye: From the Bazaar to the Vineyard, from the Inn to the Beach, In Pursuit of İzmir’s Delicacies

"Located right at the entrance of Kızlarağası Han, Elgani has been producing its signature almond paste since 1853 and now offers walnut and pistachio varieties of marzipan that I love to pair with a frothy Turkish coffee." - The MICHELIN Guide

Heard about this place through social media and wanted to bring some back home. Made a mistake and ordered a mix box without tasting first. That tiny box cost me 40€. No special taste. Doesn’t worth the money. I’m not saying it’s terrible but price taste performance isn’t good. Probably too popular and therefore super elevated price. Need to be careful with social media marketing.

I bought their walnut ezmesi and I have to admit it is pretty delicious. I bought 3 small parts for 150 tl, a bit pricy but nice to try. They have different tastes: walnut, almond, and pistachio

Tasted all 3 different types of sweets and the 2 types of chocolates (which you have to ask) that was kept away from view. Pistachio, almond and walnut. Almond marzipan is the best of the three. The dark chocolate with marzipan filling and milk chocolate with pistachios filling are both excellent. 1 kg in the luggage to go home with us. 😋

Erhan Usta and his paste desserts are legendary. Very well balanced sugar in pistachio and almond pastes. (Except Wallnut pastes) He has a small atelier at the back of his shop. All desserts are handmade and daily. A must visit culinary spot in Izmir.

Pistachio roll is tasty, not very sugary and just right. Prices are quite high, but the taste is worth it. Really good as a company for morning cup of turkish coffee

Almond marzipan was a huge surprise to me. It was sooo delicious, I never though marzipan can be so yummy 😋 The pistachio one was nothing special. The sweets are a bit pricey, but the almond one is worth it 😉
