The Best Doughnut Shops in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"This Detroit shop with over 30 years of history features giant glazed doughnuts and year-round paczki. It also serves a menu of sandwiches and shakes. Elias is open around the clock, seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. It’s got a cult following for good reason: Elias is reliable." - Danny Palumbo

My first time was Thursday and I loved every bite!! OMG! I'm going back onday for a Hershey Butter Pecan Shake!!!! OMG! The donuts were fresh and the I got Coffee too! Yum!!! Oh I also tried a chocolate chip cookie it was good! Anyway, go and check them out. There short in staff but the lady working, she handled that line with ease and without us getting frustrated. 10stars for Miss Ma'am at the register 💪🏾 Great Spot... I recommend

walked in and instantly got two samples of fresh glaze. my donuts were really good and so were the milkshakes

Google
delicious!! finally gave this place a try and it did not disappoint. Half a dozen for $10, great price for the quality. (we only tried the donuts so i can’t speak for the other food)

Google
Great customer service and the donuts 🍩 were delicious! Definitely recommend a dozen. I got them for a work event and people enjoyed them. Give them a try!

Google
Ouch. Despite having the intention of eating a low carb diet, someone did me the favor of bringing in donuts from Elias and it all went out the window. Smelling of sweet fried dough, the entire box was gone before lunchtime. I only had one, the rest were devoured by the team with much enjoyment. Thankfully, my teammate did not bring them in to the office for day two or we'd have had words. This sort of temptation is not acceptable! I stuck with the "plain glazed" and it was a five star donut. The red velvet looked pretty awesome as did the crullers. Dang it. Mine was perfect with hot coffee to start the day.

Google
The smoothies and donuts are where it's at!! I literally hit this place like 4 times a week, helps that they're open 24 hours. Most people who order hot foods get the steak philly. They also have a large selection of ice cream and customer service is well done.

Google
Elias is the best little neighborhood donut and ice cream shop! The owners and staff are always very friendly and attentive and the place is always clean and neat. Food is great. We love visiting with our family and friends!

Google
I grew up on these donuts back in the 80's my momma would bring us here for the glaze twist, cinnamon rolls, the strawberry or blueberry Danish pastry, and the buttermilk donuts soooo good, just visited recently and its still fresh and as good as before, I love this place!

Yelp
I have been going here for years ! Always fresh always delicious. The donuts are impeccable. They are not overly sweet. They're not dry. They are just absolutely perfect, I recommend.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. The location gives a homely feel. I always receive great customer service and an excellent tasty doughnut. Definitely my go to spot when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Best double chocolate donuts in town!!! I no longer live in Michigan however I make a point to stop for donuts & ice cream every visit!!

Yelp
It's Fat Tuesday Time ! Get you some of theses delicious Paczki! You can get them filled with different fruit jellies, meringue and puddings ( peach, apple, cherry, lemon, chocolate, vanilla). Yes, it was packed and Elias Donuts did a great job moving the crowd along and getting them donuts out of there. They also serve coffee, ice cream , smoothies and sandwiches here. Give 'em a try.

Yelp
Can't believe that I lived a couple of miles north of this and never stopped here. I will admit that with one of the best bakeries between might have been the reason. Boy, was I missing a gem. Neighborhood staple for close to 40 years and the quality of products and service are the reason. Every donut I brought was delicious even after being frozen. The yeast donut is even better than Krispy Kreme's!!! While I wish they would have frosted cake donuts, the flavor of the glazed ones are a good substitute. The cinnamon roll was still good even 2 days later. The sugar cookies taste like home made. While the baked goods are the main reason people stop, it will be the Hershey's Ice Cream that will make me come back. I had been trying to find that and the banana pudding flavor for 2 years. They had it!!! Small businesses like this are neighborhood secrets at times. I am glad to let the secret.

Yelp
Stopped in for an ice coffee and sour cream donut. Paid 8$ for a melted milkshake and stale donut. Definitely not the quality this place once had. So sad :(

Leonard M.

Yelp
good looking place, really nice guys in there, but it's the food that brings me back. great donuts.

Yelp
They have great doughnuts the best ... I would definitely recommend them . My favorite is the Red Velvet and next the sour cream .
google avatar

Yelp
Great staff. They made my son feel special By giving him a doughnut hole to try on our visit here. Support this local gem. Great cookies and doughnuts and yummy ice cream

Yelp
I passed Elias Donuts so many times before and thought "24 hour" donut shop. Hmmmm Well I visited one day on my way to work and indeed they were open with fresh donuts. There was a variety of over 20 donuts to chose from. I liked the moist apple sauce donuts and the sweet potato ( not overly sweet). Since they over 3 free with a dozen purchase I decided to go crazy. They had a Fruit Loops covered donut. It looked pretty weird, but I know a little kid would love it. The glazed donuts were light and fluffy with just enough glaze to satisfy your sweet tooth. Also on the menu: Red velvet, sour cream, apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, twists, donut sticks, sprinkle donuts, maple glazed, chocolate glazed, and donut holes. They accept credit cards. They have a dining portion (not open when I visited). Parking is available in a private lot. Plus it is not too far from the Southfield Fwy. They were good 2 day later. Pretty good deal for fresh donuts.

Yelp
Our next-door neighbor likes us to surprise us with Elias donuts from time to time. It's hard to beat their classic glazed flavor, but we also love some of the chocolate varieties. The donuts are soft, light, and not too cakey. I also highly recommend warming leftovers up for about 10 seconds in the microwave. I'm sure there is a really good reason why this place has been going strong for 36 years. Any type of sweet or donut we have had goes very quickly around here :-) Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Best cheeseburger... Just the way I like it. Can't forget the fries. When I ask for crispy that's what I get. I LOVE THAT PLACE!!!
google avatar

Corey H.

Yelp
This is definitely a great spot for donuts. Very comparable to Dutch girls. The donuts here are very moist and made on site. There is also a lot of variety of donuts, Ice cream, shakes, burgers etc. my favorite by far was the sour cream. Customer service isn't bad but it's not good either. There's no welcome or smile or warmth from the staff but they say thank you and such. So Maybe I'm just being picky. I tried and half dozen and all tasted great. I also tried the chicken wrap, which I did not like. It's made fresh but there is barely any meat for the huge oversized wrap they use. I ended up tearing half of the bread of because almost every bite I took was just bread and dressing. But overall great donuts huge variety. I will return for their great donuts.

Yelp
Pretty darn good! I went here Thursday around 10am and got a really good red velvet donut! If I remember correctly it was under a dollar. These are the best kind of places. You want in, order from what is shown behind the counter, pay and enjoy! Definitely worth the stop!

Nicole S.

Yelp
I absolutely love these donuts. The glaze on them is not overpoweringly sweet. They have the standard size and then they have large size, and I don't feel as guilty when I eat one large versus three regular size donuts. I don't know if the gentleman I see most of the time is the owner or not, but he is always helpful and pleasant to talk to, and he has a nice smile!
google avatar

India T.

Yelp
Customer service is everything!! The young girl that had a pink scarf on today, had the worst attitude ever. First with a Prego lady in front, myself, then the gentleman beyond. She wanted smoke with everyone. You will be doing your business great service by firing her.
google avatar

Keeya M.

Yelp
This place has been here for years. Huge variety of doughnuts, cookies, icecream and cheesecake. They also have a hotttt food menu in addition to smoothies and fresh juices.
google avatar

Yelp
Its Paczki Day! Got a half dozen at Elias Donuts, and these calorie laden cakes did not disappoint. I went for the Bavarian Cream Paczki for first taste. I even took out the time to capture a pic before delving in. :D Did I mention that the bakers at Elias work in house? If you go in at the right time you can see (and smell) the proofing, frying, and glazing of baked goods in action. You'll have to peek over into the bakery door, its not on full display. Great bakery place.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Anyone who gives this place less than 5 stars has no soul. I've NEVER had a donut this good before. Dutch Girl who, now? You have to try Elias!!
google avatar

Amber G.

Yelp
I purchased a bow tie and a chocolate frosted donut. Both donuts were extremely fresh but the bow tie tasted like old grease and I didn't care for the taste of the chocolate on the chocolate frosted donut. Had the bow tie not tasted like old grease it would have been delicious. It's a bit alarming to have donuts taste old especially when they are fresh. This was my first visit and it was a waste of money. I also didn't appreciate the level of customer service that I received. I wouldn't say that the lady behind the counter was rude but she wasn't friendly either.
google avatar

Charlisa C.

Yelp
I'm a chicken philly kind of girl. (Sorry steak lovers). I ordered the best chicken philly I've ever had in my life! And trust me, I've had many. They give you your choice of sauce. As a spicy sandwich lover, I chose the spicy chipotle sauce for my sandwich. When I tell you my mouth was in salivation heaven! My intentions in ordering the 12 inch was for me to save half of the sandwich for later. Needless to say that did not happen. One bite had me wanting more, and more, and more! I definitely recommend this sandwich. You will NOT and let down. Do it for your taste buds!

Yelp
Elias Donuts right outside of Detroit's historical Rosedale Park. What more can I say, 24 hour operated , delicious , fresh, always great service and very well priced for what you get. With their hue variety I've had every donut they sell here as I frequent every week, so whatever you go with you will not be disappointed , but there is one donut that stand out over all. The pentacle of doughnuts if you will. A huge fan of texture combinations I am and the sour cream donut they sell is one of a kind . The outside of the donut is crisp and covered in a delicious glaze and when you bite into it the inside is soft and flavorful , and really such a treat . Please stop in, you won't be disappointed .
google avatar

Joy S.

Yelp
One 2 of the best donut places in The city. (Dutch girl being the other). Elias actually has way more variety than Dutch girl so really it's my fav. Always fresh, and awesome! Get the giant glazed donut or the red velvet or blueberry!
google avatar

Joe B.

Yelp
Yup, I'd put these on par with Dutch Girl for sure. They may be a little smaller and more expensive ($1.35 each...yikes!) but just as good. Service was friendly and it's easy too find but the area might be a little seedy.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
I was craving something sweet, but didn't want to go too far. I remember driving past Elias and decided to check them out. I'm so glad I did. The red velvet, buttermilk, and sour cream donuts are definitely standouts. We had a few others but I can't recall their names, but they were good also. In fact, they were all delicious. I hope my waistline doesn't end up regretting that I found this place which is far too close to home.
google avatar

Yelp
Red Velvet Donuts! Need I say more? Not really, but I will. Elias donuts will knock your socks off good. I find them more cake-y than others, but the donut here definitely hit the spot. I also find the donuts here much more larger than your traditional cider mill, Dutch Girl or even Dunkin' Donut. Typically I'm not a donut gal. I usually love cake or ice cream but the donuts here have me reaching for my fat-pants. You need to try the: Red Velvet Donut -- so tasty! can't really taste any cocoa powder that I usually get from red velvet cake but its still really good. The donut is nice and fluffy. Cherry Chip -- similar to the delicious cake. could use more maraschino taste or chips but still good. Sour Cream -- cakey, but the outside had that perfect donut crust, if you know what I mean. you can definitely taste the sour cream in this. I really wanted to try the blueberry and chocolate ones but it seems like they were snatched up by the husband before I had a chance to take a bite. They also offer a froot loops donut (yes, a donut covered in froot loops!) which is on my list for next time. Some more tips: Elias is open 24/7. So yes, that means you can get your donut fix late on Saturday night -- a perfect way to soak up some alcohol. Get a dozen donuts, you'll want them all. Plus, when you get a dozen, you get three free. Oh, bring your stretchy pants and enjoy!

Yelp
BEST DONUT SHOP IN DETROIT!!!! (And they do run out of Donuts like some shops do and make you wait ridiculously long periods of time!)
google avatar

Ceyiar M.

Yelp
Best milkshakes!!! Best donuts !!!! And amazing steak & chicken subs prepared fresh at this location !
google avatar

Jessie G.

Yelp
Ok so this has to be the best sweet shop "IN" DETROIT! My first visit here and I received a welcoming feeling by the staff on hand. The smells of fresh baked goods filled the air but by far most what got my attention the advertisement of burgers, fries and more to offer. Of course the deal is the more you buy,but when buying a dozen you receive 3 free! No typo,so try a applesauce, buttermilk or red velvet donut. Ok,I'm back eating my treat.
google avatar

Glenn B.

Yelp
My company was doing some work down the street and decided to stop in one day. Let me tell you once you try these donuts, you will be a regular. No cutting corners here, the donuts are big, heavy and filling... You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
4 stars is for great donuts. The extra star is for the fantastic service. I'm always on the hunt for unfilled long johns, my wife's favorite that for some reason are super hard to find here in Michigan. Unfortunately, Elias doesn't carry them (they're all filled), but they offered to fry me up a couple unfilled on the spot. Naturally I had to try some of their other donuts as well. I don't remember all the flavors, but they were all fresh and delicious. They even accept credit cards, which is a bit unusual for a small donut shop like Elias. #cheapeats 1 visit (Apr. 10, 2014)

Yelp
So Scrumptious!!!! A jewel in the "D" Small but efficient shop. Great service The donuts were so fresh and flavorful. The doughnut were worth the price Red velvet Apple fritter Cinnamon roll I will be back for froot loops Banana And a few other treats

Yelp
Best donuts and steak subs in town! Love walking to grab a snack! Everyone in town stops here no matter the time, cause it's never closed!
google avatar

Alesha C.

Yelp
This is my favorite place for donuts and coffee. Omg I love this place lol and the food is good. The ice cream is good. LOOK EVERYTHING IS GOOD
google avatar

Aurora H.

Yelp
I am not, at least initially, writing about the donuts. I am sure there will be an edit in which I mention donuts. Before my visit today I hadn't been here in years. YEARS. Last time I frequented this place, I didn't have a license, wore braces, and participated in JA dances at the Rosedale Park community center. The only thing I had there was ice cream. I stopped by today and got a Philly with fries and a shake. The Philly was GOOD!!! The fries were crispy and delicious. The shake was a flavor of ice cream I haven't seen anywhere else-Apple Pie. If you like apples, you will like it. Five stars for the ambiance. Four stars for the sammich and shake.

Mechelle C.

Yelp
My milkshake was AMAZING!! It wasn't thin and watery and it wasn't too thick to bring through my large straw. However, the price ($6) for a large was a bit excessive and the workers were rude and slow.
google avatar

Dominique C.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Elias donuts. I've been coming here for years for tasty donuts ( blueberry glazed, sour cream, and red velvet are a few of my favorites). Don't let ordering through the bullet proof glass deter you ..these are good donuts.
google avatar

miss n.

Yelp
The philly cheese steak is to die for. but the service is exponentially slow. as in x to the 20th degree, multiplied by a prime number slow. I just don't have 20-30 minutes to wait for a philly cheese steak. its too bad because they really are very good.
google avatar

Daniel T.

Yelp
I am in town visiting and my friends said I "have to" try the red velvet donut from here. All I am going to say is Red velvet donuts you "have to try" them!
google avatar

Keith J.

Yelp
Great donuts.....Plenty variety of donuts. Disappointed on the steak and chicken sub though. Not bad but definitely not great.
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Yoo....the Red Velvet Donut is amazing. Their selection of donuts are expansive...and I went at 2am! Still plenty to choose from. And because I'm greedy, I got a couple of scoops of the Hershey Red Velvet Ice Cream. I had never had red velvet ice cream. In fact, I did not know such a thing existed. It was delightful. I love the fact that it is 24 hours and accepts credit. I cannot wait to go back!
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
24 hours. This place is great. The donuts have never not been fresh. They have ice cream and they have serve hot food as well now. Been going here for over 25 years and it's still quality
google avatar

Carol R.

Yelp
There are so many unique donuts and they taste amazing! Today I tried sour cream donut which sounds gross but it was probably the most amazing donut I've ever had. The Samoa flavor is amazing too. Seriously, try this place!
google avatar

Alisha H.

Yelp
So when I first tried here the doughnuts were okay I had glazed and I also had a strawberry banana smoothie it was good. I also tried one of their wraps it was chicken wrap it was good which made me want to go back. When we went back doughnuts were not covered it was bees and flies flying all over them. Then the young lady who was ringing everyone up went to the back and was back there for 12 mins and when she came back to the register she did not say sorry for the wait. I continued to order the chicken wrap again and my husband ordered the turkey wrap it was NASTY and they did not make it right when we complained over the phone a young lady was rude saying that "I made the sandwich like its suppose to be made" I was honestly outdone and over the place this was last year but I forgot to make my review . The only thing I would get from here is a smoothie. Also even though I was done my husband was not and he went there again after that and called in an order when he got there they " claimed" they did not even get a call in . So honestly just get a smoothie unless you have patience.

Deanna L.

Yelp
Went there tonight, because a friend from work told me the Donuts and food was AWESOME! We both live North of 8 Mile, so it was a little drive....Well, arrived at diner...2 gentlemen were waiting on their food(over 30 minutes). I am waiting in line, no one acknowledge me....after 20 minutes finally the young lady comes up and ask me what do I want, didn't say I am sorry for the wait or nothing. Explain this was my first time there, and commence to giving her my order, long story short order rung up to $41.00 and I was told it would be a 25 minute wait....all this while she is texting on her phone....After a half hour my son goes in to check on our food, still not ready....he stand up in there for an additional 10 minutes, get order it is not correct or is all my order there. My son says excuse me to the ladies at least 3 times before the young lady acknowledges him and he explains that she gave him the wrong order, she snaps at my son, like he does not know what he ordered (15 year old) so, I repeated what he said, she call herself snapping at me so i said, Excuse me? In other words repeat what you said. Very RUDE....After they stated it would take 10 more minutes, I walked out and went to the car, the young lady stated that, "I did not want her to get at me". So, now the other food is getting cold, no apology or nothing. Now, I am happy I did not go back in or heard her, I was trying not act the same way as she was. I took the high road....but I will not go back and spend my monies. When I got home, My Philly Steak was good but it was not prepared the way I requested. I do not eat hot food, so I asked the young lady not to put peppers on my food, guess what? You got it, Peppers all over it. I was so looking forward to this, totally let down. I truly hope the Owners see this review and address my concerns. And just like word of mouth got me to go to the place, word of mouth will stop people I know from going also. The owners need to put people in there who really want to work and who knows what "GOOD" Customer Service is. Just because it is on the Westside of Detroit, it does not have to be GHETTO.

Tiwanna H.

Yelp
I went here for the first time and my donut had mold on it. When I told the staff and requested a refund, they weren't shocked. (Leading me to believe it happens all the time). I won't be returning.

Alyessa C.

Yelp
I Love Coming Here seeing My Black People Work and Get delicious Dona treats. They have Awesome Donuts Jus Right down the street from where I grow up and Graduated from high school.! Tons of memories.

Marta M.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. All their donuts are amazing and there's such a wide variety. Definitely worth stopping by.
