21 Must-Try Pizza Places in Montreal

"Located on a nondescript strip of Bellechasse Street, in La Petite-Patrie’s western stretch, Elio’s pizza is hard to pin down stylistically: not quite old-school delivery, New York-style, or Neapolitan. It’s just Elio’s — and has been that way since 1964. Large enough to accommodate up to 700 diners (when counting its reception halls), yet homey all the same, Elio’s is a great bet for groups of all sizes." - Joel Balsam, Valerie Silva, Eater Staff

28 Classic Restaurants Every Montrealer Must Try | Eater Montreal

"Italian immigrant Elio de Lauri started his namesake restaurant with just four tables — now it can seat 400, and despite the upsizing and very refreshed dining room, the classic quality is very much still there on the part-Italian, part-Montreal menu of pies. Open since 1964." - Tim Forster

Google
Elio Pizzeria is a total gem in Montreal! It’s a tiny spot with big flavor. The pizza is so good—crispy, cheesy, and packed with toppings. Super chill vibe, and the staff are super friendly. If you’re craving pizza, this place is a must!

Google
10/10 Would go back if we come back to Montreal. Everything was amazing and service was great! Constantly topping up our water and super attentive. Very authentic Italian food.

Helen Vuong

Google
Pizzas were so big we had to bring them back home, which makes the price really reasonable for the portions they give! Friendly staff, and pretty chill atmosphere (we went there between snowstorms). Would go again!

Google
Brought my family there tonight the food was amazing the team that works there are so welcoming Frank and his crew are simply the best it’s like going home each time . My son and his fiancé was their first time and they loved it. We will definitely be back

Google
Visiting from Tennessee for a concert weekend (Marillion Weekend 2025), went to Diplomate Music, and was recommended Elio's. We were greeted and seated by Elio himself. Service was awesome, food was awesome, and Elio came over and talked with us for 15 minutes or so. And don't miss the Dolce De Leche for desert! What an incredibly nice guy, excellent food, excellent service! Highest recommendation! Thanks, Elio!

Google
Exceptional Service and Food—Perfect for Groups and Allergy-Friendly! Elio Pizzeria went above and beyond for our group of 28! Despite our size, we were comfortably accommodated, and the service was outstanding from start to finish. The kids raved about how delicious the pizza was—but for me, the real highlight was the care taken to accommodate my gluten and dairy allergies. The chef personally came out to discuss my dietary needs and prepared a special gluten- and dairy-free pasta just for me. As someone with food allergies, moments like this are rare and incredibly appreciated. I felt safe, seen, and truly taken care of. Highly recommend Elio Pizzeria for its incredible food, warm hospitality, and genuine commitment to meeting guests’ needs. A true gem!

Google
The best authentic Italian restaurant in Montreal. Excellent food, cocktails, wine and an assortment of beer, five star service great atmosphere. If you want to impress Elio's is the place.

Ali Sharifinejad

Google
The food was just ok, missing a taste that you expect from Italian cuisine. One of the servers was rude and unwelcoming, but more senior staff made up for his lack of professionalism to some extent. In general, I think this place is overrated and I probably wouldn’t go back.

Yelp
Food has always been great over the years. But we do not like the new sauce on the pizza. Looks like they change the sauce, not the same. The service and ambience was good. Not sure yet if we will be going back to Elio because of the taste of the new sauce. All 6 of us

Yelp
Visiting Montreal, and saw Elio's in a list of best pizza. Wanted to check out Little Italy, so headed over. We were not disappointed. We had Quebecoise and Prociutto & Bocconcini pizzas, both excellent. The staff was extremely friendly and we felt like great friends by the time we left. Great experience, and would be a regular here if we lived here.

Yelp
Pizzeria yes but so much more!! Amazing dishes from the arrancini, to the cavatelli gira-gira everything was outstanding. The warm personal attention to a new comer when restaurant is packed with folks coming for years was so thoughtful and kind. Cant recommend enough!! We did recommended Neapolitan style pizza with arugula and pancetta divine!!!

Yelp
Sad really. This place was an unbelievable go to in 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and 10s then son took over and it's been downhill since then. They now have to advertise on 690 radio which is proof they are having a hard time keeping things going. Never ever in 50 years plus was this needed because the food and value spoke for itself now they need radio to do it speak for them. I haven't returned for 2 years since they served me the chef's salad with half the mozzarella and yes no dressing whatsoever, it was wet from just water and no dressing at all and the pizza I had been getting for over forty years was fat from extra pepperoni and dough was raw!!!!! Sad to see this place dying. Giving it a couple more years at most. 4 years ago ratings were over 4.0 easily now since COVID and sons running the place it's well under 4 and trending down. Another Montreal stapld restaurant going down the drain!

Yelp
I have been here before and had an average experience. Friends suggested we go for lunch. Covid rules are strictly enforced by a sanitary general barking at all who don't cooperate. If you get past the entrance, you're good to go. Lunch menu offers a couple of pizzas, a couple of pastas and veal. They come with salad, tomatoes and cheese, or a meatball. The pizza here is always generously garnished. Tons of pepperoni. The pasta was fine. The bolognese sauce was enjoyable. My friends loved the veal. The only miss was the soggy cannollis All in all, it was good food.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious and real! If you're always craving pizza and pastas like me, then Elios will give you your fix. Traditional, family owned, affordable and now renovated, this restaurant has a great menu with different styles of pizzas, pastas, salads and other italian specialities. We sampled the carbonara fettucine, pasta di mamma and the abbondanza (meat lovers) pizza and everything was tasty. The portions are generous, ideal to share or to bring home as leftovers. Even the complimentary bread at the start of our meal was amazing, I just wish I didn't get so full off those buns. My only complaints are the slow service, it seems to take forever to get our orders and then get our bills. The restaurant is packed and always has patrons waiting at the door however there is no sense of urgency to turn tables and get people moving. I guess compared to big chains, people here just like to take their time and enjoy their meal as a family so be warned that if you come past 6pm, there will be a line up. The other thing I wish they offered was more creamy based pastas, I was surprised not to find an alfredo option on the menu. The carbonara is the closest thing however it seems to be tossed in a little cream only and doesn't have that onctuous, all over coating of cream sauce on the pasta. The quality of ingredients and freshness of the food is well worth the visit. I recommend the table d'hote or pizza/pasta duos if you want to sample the most items.

Yelp
Food was really good, so was the ambience. The owner's grandson met us and was super professional and made us feel very comfortable. Even met the owner was also super sweet. The pizza Margarita that I had made you very full which was great, because that just means it was made with tons of time and well deliciousness if that makes sense!? My sister had the ravioli and it was to die for, absolutely amazingly good! Definitely recommend

Yelp
I often order pizzas from Elio's and it is called a pizzeria for a reason . Their pizzas are not bad , specially the thin crust ones . However, yesterday I tried their Easter menu and ordered the Agnello ( lamb) .I was very disappointed of the presentation . I had a couple of bones with very little meat on them , it looked liked leftovers ... they were served with three burnt potato wedges and two pieces of grilled peppers . It was definitely not worth the price ( 40 CAD) . If you go there , have the pizza .

Chiara Baldini B.

Yelp
I get elios for take out once a week and love it. I always have a craving for clams and I love elios clam spaghetti. The pizzas are to die for especially thin crust my recommendations would be the candida, melenzana and prosciutto pizza. the prices are reasonable for the portion size . My spaghetti lasts me a couple of days. My boyfriend loves the fettuccini carbonara and the house wine is also great!!

Yelp
Pretty sure it's the best pizza spot I've had in Montreal, so far. After a 12 hours shift, I was dead tired. Uber eats' prices is out of control here so I pick up my order from Elio Pizzeria. 15 minutes and it's ready. French or English, the lady on the phone seemed sweet even at 945pm. I must say the pizza + tax + tips was about 20-22$ but honestly worth it! I used to order Dominos for the availability and quick/cheap service but if you want a REAL pizza please try Elio. If you hate it I'll take you to Dominos and then we can talk about all that.

Yelp
I am currently sitting in the restaurant and as an Italian I have to say-this is the WORST Italian food I have ever had. We night started off with a 40 minute wait, not because the place was full but because the front end manager had no sense of urgency. I ordered a grey goose and ginger ale and they brought it out with a lemon. Who does that?? It's lime! When I asked for a lime I was told they don't have any. Seriously? We ordered a margarita pizza and not only was it not a margarita pizza, it was equivalent to what I used to get in my high school cafeteria. I ordered the cavatelli and it was horribly burnt. Do not go here. Period. P.S. The pre dinner rolls are horrible. If your food is gonna suck at least get good bread. P.P.S. The one star is simply for the music playlist. It was decent.

Franco D.

Yelp
Been coming to Montreal for many years and never tried this fantastic Italian restaurant. Well I can say from the moment I walked in the owner and staff were so welcoming. The food was amazing and the portions are large and you can't beat the prices.. We tried several dishes and appetizers including the pizza and everything was fresh and delicious. Would definitely recommend and can't wait to go back next time I'm in town. Thank you Franco

Sophia A.

Yelp
We ordered takeout, and the pasta was delicious! We also ordered pizza and it was just a bit underwhelming, too much cheese and a little doughy. The vibe of the restaurant seemed and looked very nice!

Yelp
Elio's is another reliable staple that appears to be close enough to Petite Italie, or Little Italy. It's a little west of the main arteries and in a more gruff looking area, but it has been there a long time. It came recommended. As for whether or not it is authentically Italian, it is! Interacting with the waiters will soon enough confirm that. The other thing is that this is almost more of a pizzeria that happens to be an Italian restaurant, rather than the other way around. That said, their Italian fare is respectable. The main pasta dish itself was better than the accompaniments. As to why they're not getting a 4, it's for a couple of reasons. The more a la carte nature of the menu kicked up the price a little more than was expected. It wasn't overpriced but, collectively, it wasn't a good value, either. Also, echoing what others have said, the service by the waiters wasn't the best and mirrored what you might see in southern Italy - brusque, punchy, humorous, casual, quick, and indifferent, making you wonder if they just got off the boat last week. If in Petite Italie or thereabouts, I would default to Tre Marie, which is more of a restaurant than a pizzeria. Having eaten at Tre Marie twice over the years, I still dream about it. I hope they still make mouth watering meals. Let me end with a quip about these guys, much like there was a quip about the Pope and sexual matters decades ago which went: "If he no play da game, he no make-a da rules." For Elio's, I'd say, "If dey no watch-a da hockey, dey pay-a more attention and do a betta job." But ok, I get it - "Go Canadiens!"

Yelp
This place is very delicious. The calamari is so well done and tasty and yummy. This place is fully packed, so that's good sign. There portions are huge so come hungry for sure. The plate I got was green salad and solo Verduna veggies pizza so good. I highly recommend this place

Yelp
25 years ago, this was my favorite restaurant. Last Friday as we had a power outage, I said to my husband: we should go back as he had never been. We went and were greeted roughly by the owner who said he only had a place for us in a certain section of the restaurant. We should have left but it was late, we had no power and we stayed. The meal was ok but not good enough to keep this restaurant on our short list of places to go. Very disappointed.

Yelp
Family dinner. Two other large groups. It's been three hours and I just got my main course. They put my plate down but didn't give me cutlery so now my dinner is getting cold. Good eggplant parm

Daniela S.

Yelp
This unassuming spot has some of the best Italian food I've tried. The sauce is a tiny bit sour and not too sweet, just how I like it. The service is fast and friendly. Amazing.
google avatar

Lasagna T.

Yelp
I think the interior designer for the renos was pocketing some of the money because renos and new furniture looks incredibly low budget and cheap compared the old charm this place had. Upholstery is peeling off already and the aesthetic is lost. Lighting is way too bright. No cheese on my green salad and $25 for the veal plate was steep.
google avatar

Jose Eduardo G.

Yelp
I'll go straight to the point, probably the best pizza in Montreal... the taste is unique, for example if you taste two different pizzas you'll be able to recognize the Elio's one.

Di L.

Yelp
Compare this restaurant to those greedy restaurants on Blvd. St.Laurent, Elio's is by far a much better Italian Restaurant. Prices are fair, and portions are very generous. I love their Pizza's. Just don't go there when its busy because service will be very slow. Most American's have no clue how good this place is. They know nothing about Italian food. And btw, most American restaurants are very expensive, with cheap food quality, especially in Vegas.
google avatar

Suneel B.

Yelp
Straight out quality old schools pizza. Great service a diamond in the rough. Would definitely come back my next time in Montreal

Yelp
We discovered Elios on the way to Little Italy in Montreal. being New Yorker by birth and in love with Little Italy, this was at that same level . First class service beautiful parmesan and oil , salad rich and vibrant and the pasta dishes with homemade noodles and cheese . A feast with outdoor seating . Filippe, wonderful waiter been here for many years . we are grateful for a Elio's for a wonderful lunch and cannoli a must for anybody visiting Montreal.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want an authentic Montreal Italian restaurant experience this is the place to go to. From the cast of characters that work and frequent this place to the legit old school Italian menu, Elio Pizzeria will not disappoint. We planned a family event here and even though I planned it from another city (Toronto), Franco was always available to chat about our event and accommodate us. Staff and service was on point and our 25 guests were so happy, satisfied and stuffed full of delicious Italian food. Great value, authentic old school Italian vibe and delicious food! What more could you ask for? A wonderful time was had by all. Thanks Franco.

Yelp
Writing this review while I wait for our food because I have that much time. When we got here it was unorganized and chaotic from the start. A bunch of us were shoved in the entryway waiting to put our names down for a table. After 15 or 20 minutes someone finally came up front. Shortly after that we got seated at a dirty table and he just wiped crumbs away with his fingers. We sat for 10 minutes before we got water, and another 10 before a server came over to take our order. We did get some bread though and wow! It's so amazing and they don't skimp on the butter! I ordered a coke about 30 minutes ago now and still haven't received it, along with our food. The place is incredibly beautiful though and not what you expect when you see it from the outside. I thought it was just us maybe struggling with getting our food but people all around us are frustrated for one reason or another. We are going on 45 minutes waiting for our food. We ordered one pizza. Quick tip, make sure you ask for your check when your food comes or plan to wait forever for that too. Update: pizza finally came almost 52 minutes after we ordered but it was dang good.

Yelp
I've been eating here for over 40 years. Every time I come to Montreal, this place is on my list to eat, just love their food, especially the pizza. I've noticed the place had just been renovated, the waiters and waitresses are really nice and love the new look of the restaurant. This is a hidden gem on bellechasse street. I highly recommend this place.

Tim D.

Yelp
Perfect meal. Perfect experience. My fiancé and I celebrated our engagement here at Elio's. Each dish was carefully crafted, and each taste of each dish was wonderfully simple and complex at the same time. The staff and owner went way beyond expectations, and were friendly as could be throughout the night. I would highly recommend going here.
google avatar

CaryElen K.

Yelp
WOW! Let me repeat that...... WOW! And en français......WOW! Amazing food, amazing service. If you've been in Italy and miss the authentic cuisine, eat here!
google avatar

George V.

Yelp
Great Pizza. Easily one of the best in Montreal. (Tried the cadanese) Disgusting Pasta. It tasted cheap and the sauce tasted as if it was out of a can. (Tried the fetuccini with tomato sauce and Italian sausage) I recommend avoiding the pasta and simply going for the pizza.
google avatar

Karina W.

Yelp
I'd like to preface this review with saying that I like Elio's escalope de veau à la milanaise so much that I thought about it every single day the week after I went there. It was a dream meal for me, this crispy breaded pan fried veal with spaghetti in tomato sauce. It's like a kids' meal in an adult portion. It did took us awhile to get seated. When we got there, around 7.30pm on a Saturday evening, the place was in full swing and the manager was teaching his son tricks and tips to handle the pressure. We started with bread and it was served warm, which for me is a real plus plus. Then came the calamari, which was good on its own (though a tad oily), but was absolutely fantastic when dipped into the accompanying tomato sauce. It was a very unique taste, this tomato sauce, and it reminded me of the tomato sauce I had at a greek restaurant recently. And finally the superstar of the night for me, the veal, just made that evening better and better. For dessert, we had a canoli, which was also unbelievably good, even though by this time my stomach was already screaming, "Enough is enough!" I will go back 1000 times and recommend everybody who likes their genuine, family run Italian restaurants to give this place a try.
google avatar

Ann A.

Yelp
Wasn't impressed with the service or quality of the food since they modernized their establishment. Will not recommend it to anyone. This was my favorite Italian restaurant for years but now has changed. Staff not experienced as the staff they had before. Sorry! The sauce was not the same and lasagna was just slopped on the plate.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
One of my classic, affordable, comfort food spots in the area. I like to sit on the patio in the summer, dip the fresh lovely rolls in the homemade giardinera, order massive plates of pasta and pizzas to share and take home glorious quantities of leftovers. I've always found the service here enjoyable, they start out brusque but warm up to you over the course of the meal if you have a friendly rapport, and end up fairly hilarious and super kind. Like any good Italian family meal, or so I imagine. =)
google avatar

Alex J.

Yelp
A lot of people will argue about which restaurant is better, Elio or Napoletana. I'm a big fan of both and they each have their own styles. I tend to prefer the quiet and more remote location of Elio, including the fact that it looks like an authentic old fashioned Italian restaurant, somewhat forgotten with time, in the sense that it is situated in an area of La Petite Patrie which has not been frequented by the hipsters (yet). I also love that right across the street is old Catelli pasta factory building. There's been a bad wrap about this place concerning the service from waiters but personally I've never had any issues. I'm the type of client who will never return to a location if I come across any snobbish attitude and Elio is a place I continue to frequent. I have always been served courteously. I haven't tried everything on their menu but their pizza is delicious and I can say that I've never had a better carbonara!
google avatar

Keith C.

Yelp
Great food and the hospitality was fantastic. They treated us like family. The owner came over and talked with us a couple of times. We were treated really good.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Another old-school Montréal institution. The kind of place where they don't care much for food cost and just slap so much toppings on a pie that the pizza will likely defeat you. They also have lighter pizza like the sausage and spinach pizza which was awesome. Then there's the ravioli. Nothing fancy here, just damn tasty cheesy HOMEMADE ravioli. Which they sell by the bag, worth the walk just to get those back home. The service is rushed and dry but who cares, you go there to grub for lunch, shoot the shit and get out.
google avatar

Yelp
My folks grew up going to Elio's - so it's been around a LONG time, and is still owned by Elio's family. Luckily for me, my parents shared this gem of a restaurant with me years ago :) So first, don't expect fancy decor because I don't think they've redecorated since they opened the restaurant 30 years ago. This is a really traditional, family-style restaurant with no bells and whistles. The focus is on the FOOD. If you get there past 5pm on a weekend, you can expect a line-up. That said, you can call ahead to order takeout. In my opinion, Elio makes the best pizza in town. They're not cheap on the toppings, and I find their all-dressed to be a well-rounded mix of pepperoni, bell pepper, mushrooms and cheese. The crust is perfect - not too thick. I also appreciate that their crust is never wet like some places! Their pasta dishes are equally good, with my favorite being the cavatelli. I'm not sure if they make their own pasta but if not, the guy they get it from does a real good job of giving me that illusion! Elio's sauce is so good that I never leave the resto without buying a jar or two. Yup, Elio stocks the front fridge with sauce and a few pastas for those of us who want to bring some home. Elio offers a few different pastas and sauces that you can 'mix and match' if you like. They are very generous with their portions, so you'll leave there with a Buddha belly and quite possibly, a doggy bag. As well, their prices are super affordable. What are you waiting for? GO!
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Gargantuan portions, ok service and the decor is stuck in the 80's. But the food is what matters to me. The pizza-ghetti is a 10" pizza and a full pound of pasta, so much meat in their abondaza. For about $14, it's enough for 2 people, or 3. I wish I could say the dough is that heavenly dough dreams are made of, but it's pretty generic, sort of like the square pizzas sold in supermarkets. But when it's fresh, it's good. Their steaks are ridiculously cheap and did I mention the portions. This place is located in front of a city bus depot and there is a courthouse and a large office tower a block away, so that could explain why they're always packed most of the time. The location might seem a bit isolated, but so many plusses in it's favor (private parking lot) and it's one block away from both Beaubien and Rosemont Metro.

Sam A.

Yelp
What can I say that hasn't been said? I love this place. My go to place for amazing pizza and pasta! I never ever had a bad meal here. It's loud, proud and Italian! For large groups reservations are a must!

Yelp
I attended this pizzeria with friends last week. Even though it was a Wednesday, the restaurant, quiet at first, quickly became a loud and bustling place. We were waited on by a slightly irritated looking man. Pasta, pizza, and other carbs were in the menu the waiter dropped on the table. The rumor is that this Italian restaurant is one run by "authentic" Italians. The thin-crust pizza is delicious, and the toppings are light. I had the equivalent of their Table D'Hote, which came with a soup. They brought buns out for everyone. In the end, they brought us a crispy dessert that came with the table d'Hote. I had ordered a soft drink, and then, when I requested a second one at the end of the evening, they charged me for both. So buyer beware! ;-) There are no refills here. I don't think I would come here alone. I think I would feel like I was irritating them by my presence. In a group, the irritation would be diffused over the crowd... which is safer. I saw children there, and couples, and very large groups. Our food didn't take long to prepare. The price for a pizza (table d'hote) was 20$. Considering how the pizza was a full pizza, this seemed decent for a sit-down place. With drinks, tips and taxes, though, this meal turned into a 33$ affair. I don't think I would go back, though, with a young family. It would add up quite quickly.

Yelp
My go to place for picky eaters, nobody ever complained about the food here, never had a bad meal here! Hands down THE best: -lasagna ! -tortolinis -pizza ! -FETTUCCINI CARBONNARA!!!! -manicotis -soups (if u go over lunch!) I would go everyday if I could afford a 17$ lunch everyday. ! I love Elio I always buy their to go sauce and pastas to take care of my craving when I'm home!

Yelp
Went there recently with friends for dinner and was shocked by the lack of service all around. The music was loud and out of date. I left with getting my meal. I will never go back here ever. again.

Yelp
This is the kind of old-fashioned Italian restaurant that I love! Brightly lit, well-worn menus with lots of options, 1920's building and decor and friendly and attentive service. The pizza was first rate as was an order of spaghetti carbonara (prepared in the correct manner without cream). Osso bucco was tender and toothsome and starters of grilled shrimp and bruschetta were both terrific. They were 86 on a couple of choices but that is only a paean to their evident popularity. Great cappuccino too, Dinner for four without dessert but with a bottle of house wine (a very decent red Abruzzese selection, BTW) and with espresso/cappuccino came to only 128.50 and we were stuffed. We look froward to returning on our next visit to Montreal

Mitch F.

Yelp
Classic Italian delights. Family restaurant that has stood the test of time. No fancy or pretentious nouveau cuisine. Straight forward. Great variety especially for pizzas. Service can be suboptimal at times. Call ahead on weekend. Gets super busy. Make reservations.
google avatar

Kit L.

Yelp
Authetic Family resto, place is full of Italians. If you love their sauce, you'll love all their dishes.

Orly R.

Yelp
Amazing authentic Italian food. Great friendly staff. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, but if you're a big group I would definitely reserve since the line tends to get big in the evening.

Yelp
The pros = the pizza & the big portions Cons= arrogant owner and poor service. also pasta is too salty

Yelp
Service was so so. Food average italian. The pizzas are ok. Pastas are good. Nothing special sorry.

Yelp
Really good food. MAde with amore! Price is right on. Fresh ingredients, great selection of food and their vongole is really good. Definite comeback.

After a trip in Italy, I've become a not-so big fan of local (Montreal) Italian food because I found it does not provide good value for the money (compared to Italy), but I was extremely pleased with Elio Pizzeria. Phone reservation went without a hitch and the tables were ready as expected. The service was lively, prompt and efficient. The food portions were impressively large (entrees, as well as the pizza-pasta combo). The food was delicious. The dining room was clean and modest. The prices were better than I expected for the portion sizes. Elio Pizzeria is easily accessibly via Metro. Again, I'm genuinely impressed and now a big fan of this place for groups of friends.
