Is Eli's on the way out? I mean, just like Eli's old place, The Vinegar Factory, it seems like nobody is ever there- must do most of their business with deliveries. I've relied on them for years to have the best, freshest foods and gourmet groceries and they still come through with great stuff. But it's the little things that can tell you which way the wind is blowing. This past week, Eli's began charging for ice packs- you know, those frozen blocks of gel that you put with your perishable foods so they make it home in good shape. Up until about a week ago, these were free, which is fair since you pay a premium for pretty much everything in the store. Do you really want to risk that $30 piece of poached salmon getting gross on the way home? No, you don't. But now there's a charge for those little blocks of freshness. I get having to charge if you're filling up your basket with them or if you're not getting anything else, but when you've just spent $200 on a single bag of groceries, it's a little insulting that you need to pay even more just because you don't live around the corner. So I go back to my original question- is Eli's on the way out? If they need to start charging for these little ice packs to maintain the financial health of the store, it doesn't make me feel too confident about what the future holds for this Upper East Side treasure.
