Portland Ice Cream Shop Zeds Opens in Austin - Eater Austin

"Zeds Ice Cream serves a blended-to-order fruit ice cream. A Portland-based ice cream shop expanded into Austin this summer. Zeds Ice Cream is found at 1814 Harvey Street in the Chestnut neighborhood as of mid-June. Zeds’s focus is made-to-order creamy ice cream consisting of vanilla bases (with a vegan option) mixed with fruits. The current menu — which changes monthly — features strawberry, blueberry, cherry, mango, pineapple, and banana. Special creations include the mango sticky rice, where mango ice cream is topped with a coconut cream drizzle and puffed rice; the pina colada with a pineapple ice cream base plus toasted coconut flakes and coconut cream drizzle; and the strawberry paleta, a strawberry ice cream with chamoy syrup and tajin. To help develop the Austin location’s menu, Zeds teamed up with local chef Nick Middleton. The ice creams are available in cones, cups, and half-pints. As for drinks, there are draft beers, wine, cider, and coffee. Zeds’s physical space features a walk-up window and outdoor seating. There are plans to add a food truck in a couple of months. Zeds co-founders Caleb Schmidt and Matt Porter opened the ice cream shop in Portland in 2016. Schmidt was inspired to launch the store after a trip to Auckland, New Zealand to visit family. “I tried the delicious ice cream at a roadside stand and was immediately hooked,” he says, hence why the ice cream is described as New Zealand-style. Schmidt and Porter actually grew up in the Austin and San Antonio areas, and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, after which they moved to Portland. They had always wanted to open a location in Austin. The two still operate the Portland shop. The Harvey Street address had previously been home to barbecue restaurant Ed’s BBQ from 2014 to 2016, and Danny’s BBQ before that. Porter and Schmidt live in the neighborhood. Zeds’s Austin hours are from 3 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, and then noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday." - Nadia Chaudhury

OK experience here. No coffee in the night I was there, a pity since it would go well with Desserts. Desserts were not bad but not a lot of choices. Hot chocolates was not bad, not too sweet.

What a delightful surprise! I stumbled upon this gem while out for a stroll and was drawn in by the promise of dairy-free/vegan hot chocolate. The menu didn't disappoint, offering a plethora of options, with over half of them catering to my dietary preferences. The dark hot chocolate with oat milk was a decadent treat, satisfying my chocolate cravings perfectly. The cozy ambiance and late-night hours make it a fantastic alternative to traditional nightlife spots. With comfortable seating and just the right amount of background music, it's the ideal spot for a relaxed evening with friends. Needless to say, I'll be making regular visits to this charming establishment!

Cute dessert spot. We rocked up at 10pm for sweets and were happy to see delectable treats. Highly recommend this place.

Very nice place with a relaxed ambience. Chairs were comfy with dim lights so it was a nice way to finish the night given that it is open til late. We ordered 3 desserts and were too full to finish it all. My last dessert took forever to come and by the we just couldn't eat more. Chocolate lava cake was yummy and the triple chocolate brownie trifle was chocolate overload with lots of texture. The espresso on the side of trifle was a bit bitter for me but you can always leave it aside. Will be back.

What a delightful place to go on a cold evening for dessert or a sneaky hot chocolate. A cosy and inviting space to enjoy chats and drinks. I thoroughly enjoyed my pear entremet... so much, in fact, I still talk about it weeks later. The persian fairy floss hot chocolate was absolutely incredible with the rose flavours after each sip. Unfortunately, the red Velvet cake was dry, and I wouldn't purchase that again. I do really look forward to coming back though and trying more of your incredible desserts.

I absolutely loved this place, I came here for my dad’s birthday and it was literally so delicious. Especially the chocolate ice cream brownie it was the most delicious chocolate dessert I have ever eaten in my entire life, that is a must you have to go try out this place. Their candy floss chocolate is literally so cool it’s like a hot chocolate science experiment and the hot chocolate marshmallow was literally so good aswell. Will definitely come back again

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cafe Elizabeth is a must-visit! Their ice chocolate mess is decadent, and the mango lassi is refreshing and full of flavor. I can’t get enough of their home-style fresh garlic bread—it’s simply delicious, and the potato wedges are crispy and well-seasoned. The service is exceptional, making the entire dining experience a pleasure. Highly recommend for anyone craving delicious drinks and great hospitality!

My favourite late night dessert spot in Auckland! Their hot chocolates are to die for - I highly recommend the dark chocolate one. Also, you have to get one of their lava cakes. Really great spot for a date or a wholesome night with friends ❤️
