The Tradition and Business of Picking and Selling Piñon Nuts in New Mexico | Eater

"Founded more than 50 years ago by a trader raised in a four‑generation family of Native American art dealers, this Highway 602 gallery combines a traditional trading-post atmosphere — murals of prominent Navajo community members and glass cases of jewelry and crafts — with a long-running piñon brokerage. The owner treats buying and selling tiny, dark piñon nuts as both passion and business: he purchases by the pound from local pickers, washes and cures the nuts (using a closely guarded method), stores them in ventilated space, and moves most volume to national wholesale buyers while retailing only a small share in the shop. Once a million‑pound operation in the 1960s, the piñon trade has shrunk dramatically due to bark beetles and environmental change, and typical margins are thin (around 10 percent, with 20–25 percent a rare win), yet the seasonal income remains vital to many local Navajo and Pueblo families. Located just north of the Checkerboard, the gallery also sits amid piñon‑dotted high‑desert vistas that feed the regional harvesting tradition the business both depends on and supports." - Karen Fischer

NO PUBLIC BATHROOMS!!! I stopped here because it supposedly had the nearest bathroom. I was going to check out some merchandise afterwards. So much for being "treated like relatives"! I usually avoid those relatives!

Extorsive prices and porta-potties for customers. NOT where I'm dropping $4.500 for a charm necklace.

I pass this place often going to the VA Finally, after a year, I decided to check it out. It's a great shop featuring high end quality merchandise. I would bring any serious collectors to this place. And not for nothing, the staff is really friendly!

I have shopped here plenty of times before my last encounter. I simply went into the store because I had called the day before about a Navajo dictionary. Unfortunately only one out of the two books I purchased was what I needed. Not to mention I found out that the same book they were selling in the store cost me $15 and I could have bought it somewhere else for only $5. So I decided I wanted a refund, I walked into the store the following day and kindly asked the lady at the front register if I could get a refund but without greeting me or asking questions, she decided to set a little paper down in front of me that said "return policy," and then proceeded to tell me to talk to the manager, and pointed towards the back and walked off. The "manager" I talked with, his name is Darrel and right away said NO! there's no returns and all sales are final. He was the person that cashed me out the day before and not once mentioned a NO return policy. He also tried giving me the same piece of paper the lady at the front register tried to give me. So of course we argued and then he asked if I wanted to speak with his DM and I said yes. He went to the back, came back out and said have a seat she'll be with you. I asked how long she would be and he rudely said "she's on a phone call right now. she'll get to you when she's finished." It wasn't until then I told him how rude he and his associate were and he then said "we are not rude here," with attitude in his voice. I explained to him as a manager he should have pointed out the no return policy upon check out to reassure his customers so that this wouldn't happen. He then said, "there are signs all over the store." This is a trading post with jewelry, rugs, dishes, books, etc. why would I want to walk around the store reading signs? In the end, Darrel issued my refund, but in the middle of the transaction, he said, "I am only doing this because I know who your parents are." So is that how this business operates? You have to know someone on the inside to get things done? WOW! what ever happened to good old fashion customer service?

While this store wasn't as close to the interstate as we like, it was well worth the extra few minutes it took to get there. Walking in the door, we found a wonderful place to shop for Native American crafts, gifts, souvenirs, etc. Walking through the store is a long process, because each shelf and display case contained items of interest, beauty, and craftsmanship. There is so much to see that we could have easily spent hours there.

This place has changed from 5 years ago. It is a high end gallery. The meat market is gone. The tee shirts are gone. The employees were well dressed and well groomed and friendly and polite. But I didn't make a purchase. Five years ago I purchased a lot of things. The older i get the less I like change.

GHETTO Wow I can see why there's only been three reviews in the past hundred years Came here for the life experience wow what an experience took all but four minutes to see everything There are no prices on the jewelry if you call it that don't waste your time go downtown with his competition prices would be better

Yelp
First time I've visited Ellis Tanner Trading Co. Nice jewelry, native blankets, books, saddles, some tack, pawn and check cashing services. I did not see Ellis Tanner but the staff was very helpful and personable.

Yelp
Cashiers at the front, 2 guys not so welcoming, rude and arrogant. I asked some questions about some cds and artists to the long haired dude...but he never made eye contact, his behavior was rather brutish and gave his attention more to the young ladies standing on the other end. Very poor customer service, but everything else was nice, amazing arts and crafts. Just need to give more lively and polite souls a chance at those front positions. The rudeness takes 3 stars off.

Yelp
We lucked out and hit the 50% sale. I found a GORGEOUS old pawn bracelet for a great price. Friendly staff, good selection. Not on 66 with all the others, but go here first.
