I used to come here when I was younger and it was City Place mall and it's been upgraded but I still enjoy going to Outback, Burlington, TJMaxx and Ross. The Dave and Buster's has a great happy hour and Majestic Movie Theater is always nice to see a film. I've enjoyed seeing the transformation from a dead mall to a great addition of shops and places to eat. I've been coming here since 2005!

This review is for the indoor play area on the lower level at Ellsworth Place. The playground features two playhouses with manipulatives attached, a slide, Arial tunnel, ground tunnel, slide, balance beam, all on carpeted surfaces with one main entry/exit point. These are all great features. The challenge is that the play area is 1) FILTHY. My child caught influenza a this past winter from playing in the play area. Even though the rules ask kids not to bring food, they do. They also bring trash - in the form of either food wrappers or droppings or toy wrappers or droppings. During the multiple times I tried to patronize the play area with my child over several months, I have seen a staff member come into the clean maybe twice (?) and that's with a broom and dustpan (no vacuum or disinfectant wipes). Take a look at the white surfaces - if you can. They're mostly gray with black smudges - i.e. they are not wiped down. I cannot tell when the last time they were wiped down. The houses feature windows. Look through them. They're almost translucent like frosted glass...but they're supposed to be transparent. The final straw was when my wife reported to me she saw a mouse under the bench while I was in the bathroom. We have not been back since. The play area needs a DEEP CLEAN. Then it needs to be closed periodically during the day for comprehensive cleaning. Tysons Center has a similar play area - it closes 2pm-2:30pm daily for thorough cleaning, plus it is cleaned after the mall closes - each day. Take note Ellsworth Place. 2nd, the play area is breaking down. I've reported to a representative (good luck finding one on the regular) about the bench inside the larger playhouse needing repair plus a visible hole in the carpet that needs to be addressed. Months later, still not addressed. 3rd, while I know there is supposed to be an honor system with respect to the rules - they are not followed regularly. Mall representatives should come through periodically to check and enforce the rules. I've seen kids older than 12 there unsupervised. I've seen kids under than 12 there unsupervised. Food is brought in. Toys and wrappers are brought in. Older kids are running around and horseplaying right next to toddlers and younger kids. Kids are climbing up on top of the playhouses and other equipment they should not be climbing on. All these behaviors intimidate some parents and children from coming and playing. But then again, this is the only free, enclosed play area with lots of equipment and room to run - so I can see parents coming in and dealing with issues so they can have a few minutes of peace while their kid runs wild. This review is overdue - I meant to share during the early spring when my wife saw the mouse but didn't get to it until now. The play area has lots of potential. But grime, damaged play equipment, and bad behavior have lost Ellsworth Place a potential steady customer (we patronized multiple stores while playing in the play area).

Love that this mall still has the beauty supply in it and I miss the big fountain that used to be on the bottom floor. My first field trip in Life was to city place mall, I remember the bottom floor was the food court with a great ice cream spot and when you entered the mall you couldn't forget the huge gumball machine back in 1997

Google
A pretty awesome indoor playground for your little one. Highly recommend for 2 years up. May be a bit difficult for kids under 2. Otherwise, the playhouse is a big hit. Will be back.

Was expecting more stores…I would not consider this a mall 🏬

The Outback Steakhouse is great. The mall is doing a good job at trying to make a comeback. I am looking forward to the new eatery Commas.

Google
Pretty cool mall. Cuz I have all your typical mall stores but it's got a couple bargain clothing stores The craft store five below just a tiny handful of small stores mostly like jewelry or tailor You're not going to see stores like Hot topic or Hollister or things like that here. It does have a big restaurant though that's an Irish pub and then downstairs has like a Chinese buffet They have an auntie Anne's and they have a Dave & busters. Free parking garage that connects directly into the mall with a skywalk.

Yelp
I'm not understanding the low review for this place. I just moved to the area and I have made this a destination for me when I need an item. I also find the uniqueness of the space appealing. My coworkers down here told me that this use to be a department store at one point and then it got redone into what is essentially an urban mall now. One that I personally think works. Parking is fairly easy here. You can do street (if you can find a spot) or the parking garage across the street. Depending on the floor you park on in the garage you have two options to enter Ellsworth. You can take the footbridge which will take you to the fourth floor of the mall, or you can go street level and cross the street. One inside it is a bit of a maze to find where you want to go. My tip here is to start on the bottom and make your way to the top. If you are a discount store shopper than this is the place for you. You can hop from TJ Maxx to Marshalls, than onto Ross's and Burlington. Throw in some Five Below and DSW and you probably just found an outfit for far less than going to a department store. I don't know what this was like before I moved down here, but it looks like it is in bit of a transition. The shoe store on the one level was on its way out and there appeared to be a storefront that was having work done on the inside. Food options inside aren't the best, but at least there are some. Honestly, with the proximity of this place, there are a lot of options just right outside too.

Yelp
This is a great little mall and is located in a very cute downtown Silver Spring. You are not only able to find a variety of stores in the mall, but you are also located right by several great restaurants, the ice skating rink, and clothing stores like H&M and Uniqlo that are outside of the mall.

Yelp
I'm a MOCO girl so this will forever be City Place to me! Back in the day, it was cool hanging here and going to the movie theater on the top floor. I don't come here very often because honestly there's not much really for me. The place has had some upgrades over the years, but it's still pretty basic and not too many options! Here's a quick list: * Nail salon * Kids for less * Footlocker * Shoe City * Rainbow * Five Below * Beauty supply * GNC * TJMaxx * Marshalls * Burlington * Ross (worst I've ever been to) * Dave and Busters (on the top floor) *I'm sure I missed some but this is the majority! The lower level has some food selections but you're better off going outside with way more choices. There's an hourly garage connected to the "mall" and metered street parking!

Yelp
Man, lots of the escalators doesn't work and so walking up and down is harder than walking on normal stairs cause it's larger... and I have Achilles tendinitis. This place has a five below, King fu tea, and Rainbow store. I dunno what's in the rainbow store. There probably a few other stores... I dunno. I was just blown I had to walk up broken escalators.

Yelp
New name, who dis? City Place (aka Ellsworth Place) has come a longggg way since the 99s and the 2000s. If you remember the days when the only thing this 'mall' had going for it was the cool elevator, then you have to give this place at least two stars for the upgrades made since then. There's now a T.J. Maxx, Dave & Busters, Burlington, Five Below and Michaels inside, most of which are (shockingly) pretty clean. Of course, the layout here is still tragic - you'll have to go up five flights on stairs to go from store to store. Some businesses make enough to turn a profit and pay employees, while others get absolutely no sales and get shuttered within a few months, so the 'mall' seems like a ghost town on certain floors and a human stampede on others. FYI - there is a buffet downstairs that carries a smell throughout the entire shopping mall, so sensitive noses, be warned. Ellsworth gets 3 stars for being metro accessible with a decent selection of stores but loses 2 stars for having a terrible layout and smelly hallways. It is what it is.

Yelp
This place still hasn't made "quality mall" status, but they have made some major improvements and are headed in the right direction. Back in 2011, I lived in downtown Silver Spring and I must say that this place was atrocious. Over the past few years, they have made a number of updates which really give the interior a contemporary and trendy feel. While they still haven't secured any major "A-List" mall stores like Macy's, an Apple Store, Victoria Secret, Bath & Body Works, Lush or Seohora, they krecently added Dave & Busters which is a huge plus, especially when your main "headliner" stores include the likes of Ross, Macy's & TJ Maxx. A major issue with this is that these 3 stores all carry a random mix of leftover and/or slightly imperfect clothes purchased from other stores. They rarely have sets of the same item for sell, so on the occasion that you find something cute, it's likely not in your size and it's the only one in the store (or it's mixed in amongst the endless sea of other random clothes, so you'll never find it!). The fact that they have THREE of these stores here that in all honestly could be consolidated into one store is a real turn off. Additionally, it seems that their selections are the WORST of all discount stores in the DMV. I've dropped by these three stores a few times, but always walk out empty handed. It's really a waste of PRECIOUS square footage that could be being used by an "A-List" store. The Dave & Busters is nice, but it's not enough to make this mall what it could be. They have added a Guitar center, but with it being a specialty store that caterers to a very small number of people, it probably won't bring in a high volume of traffic either. Now, the craft store Michaels is a wonderful addition to the DT Silver Spring scene, but again, it's still not enough to upgrade the status of this shopping center. On the flip side, the fact that there is an attached garage that is free to park in on nights and weekends is a huge plus. Also, EVERY SINGLE TIME, I use that elevator here, it's ALWAYS FULL TO CAPACITY sometimes where people have to wait for the elevator to come around again because there isn't enough space for them to squeeze on. They really should have at least 2 elevators. As much as I really want to like this place, they simply don't have the type of stores that would entice me to frequent it. Based on the stores ALONE, I'd give this place 2 stars, but add the parking, a craft store and a Dave & Busters..... I'll add another and make it stars!

Yelp
Urban shopping mall on five or so levels with an elevator, stairs and at least one set of escalators that will bring you from the food court at the base through each floor of stores. Not particularly busy on this weekday evening, but I did see one anchor store still in the process of being remodeled and so it wasn't open. Most of the square footage here seems to be dedicated to the department stores with TJ Maxx and Ross and Marshalls and Burlington Coat Factory. On a dark day, I think that this place would be quite dismal.

Yelp
In the heart of silver spring, this spot is a great place to reset from all the fun local community events in downtown. Shopping for gifts, you have your budget friendly favorites ~ Marshalls, Burlington. Lots of mini spas, massage, nail & hair salons. Dave and Buster's upstairs. Kid friendly atmosphere, they have the cutest play area. Loads of fun for toddlers & elementary students! Not a very large mall, so no fear of getting too lost. The downs are that elevator, having multiple levels. It is the slowest and the wait is forever. No matter time of day. There is limited lounging areas and no designated eating area or food court. Just places to munch like aunty Anne's Ben and Jerry's, Kung Fu tea & an Asian buffet downstairs. There are plenty of restaurants within the area. Overall, it's a nice simple mall for strolls with young kids, Meet-ups & budget friendly dates.

Yelp
I was in the parade and I had to run in and out of the Ellsworth to keep from freezing to death. I've been here plenty of times and I find it to be a great little location. They have everything from Dave and busters to the newly added five and below. I use the adjacent parking lot on several occasions throughout any given week. It's different because the mall goes up due to the space instead out out like most malls. The outdoor stores and restaurants are pretty useful and I love the area.

Ellen G.

Yelp
The entrance next to TD bank is ADA compliant, so if you have a wheelchair or stroller enter that way. Don't go through the entrance closest to movie theater/chikfila as it is only stairs, no ramp.

Yelp
This big five story mall has a multi level parking garage (Town Square Garage). A bridge on level 5 takes you to the 4th floor of the mall. The fee is $1.00 per hour. It is free after 7 pm weekdays & on weekends. The mall has a food court with Ben & Jerries, Aunt Annie's and more. There are many popular stores here such as Ross, Guitar Center, Michaels, Burlington Coat Factory, GNC, Five Below, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. This is a busy mall. It has multiple escalators, stairways and a central elevator. The elevator is my main complaint and a big cool factor. It takes forever to get the elevator after you push the button but it's a decent size one with a glass window back wall so you can look at the floors as they pass by. Another cool thing here is an enclosed play area for small children on the ground floor. This can be a god's send to parents on a cold or rainy day or just a break on a long day! Also I should note that there's a poor internet connection on the ground floor even if the phone has 5g. Until next time be kind to each other. #ellsworthplace #familytime #shopping @yelpdc

Yelp
The space that really old timers will remember as the Hecht's department store is being remodeled and upscaled from the collection of cheapo stores that originally filled it. Not Your Average Joe is on the corner of Colesville and Ellsworth, and a Dave and Buster's is under construction. The Blue Pearl Asian buffet in the basement is pretty good for its genre. Parking right across the street in the county garage with a pedestrian walkway on an upper level is free on weekends and after 7 PM on weekdays. The exit gates are disabled after 9 PM, so if you stay late there's no need to pay. But $1/hr is not too horrible.

David M.

Yelp
This is a clean mall, with a large parking garage only a half mile from the Silver Spring train station. It's not a bad way to drop your car off before ubering into the City, especially since parking is often free. When we got back, the place was packed, all levels were full and people were literally prowling the garage looking for people leaving so they could snag there spots. If this happens to you, suggestion - don't encourage people to follow you. If they do, they'll probably box you in trying to claim the spot. As someone else does the same thing in the other direction, how do either of them expect you to get out. Oh, and if you're backing out, and they decide to squeeze by behind you, how do they really think that's gonna work out if my car doesn't have a back up cam (it does). So yeah... bunch of jerks park here at night, but still, it worked perfectly.

Bobbie R.

Yelp
An odd little mall. Very gray concrete industrial style. A bit drab. I agree with another yelper who said Burlington, Marshalls and TJ Maxx could all be one big store. Basically the same merchandise. I do like that they have a kids play area inside. I did enjoy shopping here but, it was not on the top of my " go to" list.

Janae H.

Yelp
I go to this mall all the time and its cool but it was one time in particular when i went to the shoe city. I went in and saw a shirt i knew i wanted so i asked to try it on. So i go into the fitting room try the shirt on im like cool i take it off and put my coat back on and walk towards the front desk. Before i could even take 2 steps one of the workers comes over to me doesnt say anything and grabs my jacket purse and the shirt i just tried on and accused me of stealing because she "didnt remember seeing me walk in" with MY OWN coat. Once she realized the coat i had was mine and i was ready to pay for the shirt i tried on she didnt even apologize or say anything at all about how she just violated my belongings and Falsely accuse me of stealing. Im not sure if she still works there it was a couple months ago when this occured.

Yelp
It is hard to review Ellsworth Place since it's totally trying to reinvent itself from City Place. Ross and Marshall's are still there, A Not Your Average Joes (sign said coming soon but it may already be open) and Dave and Busters are scheduled to open in the future. For some reason this mall seems to need more sun and light, it's kind of dreary. Hopefully as more restaurants and stores open it will seem brighter and more lively. On the ground level is a Michael's Craft Store and there is an outside and an inside entrance to Ben and Jerry's. I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves and updating my review when the remodeling is more complete.

Yelp
(This review is for the mall overall, so I'm not going to go into detail about individual stores) {TL;DR version: Better than City Place, but not great. Lots of discount stores and some good food choices.} ~ Convenient location: Metro accessible, short distance to other stores like CVS ~ Not many of its stores draw me. I only go to Michael's, Ben & Jerry's, and Kung Fu Tea here. Some of the other restaurants look good, but I haven't had a chance to try them yet. ~ I'd recommend this place to someone who shops at discount stores a lot... this mall has FOUR of them, which is the most I've seen in one place. There's also a Forever 21 Red store, which sells simpler, cheaper clothes than regular Forever 21 stores. I didn't think it was possible to be even cheaper than Forever 21 but you learn something new every day. ~ The mall's decor is dull, drab, and depressing. There are already enough depressing things in the world, we really don't need to add a depressing mall on top of all that. The dark brown faux-rusted steel beams, dark grey floors, and poor lighting make it look gloomy. The bottom level's floor is just the concrete and there are these weird decorative gears throughout the mall. I guess they were going for the industrial look but it's just ugly lol. (However this is just personal taste... I might not like it but someone else might think it's great! Also I usually don't review/care how malls look but this one just makes me feel a little sad whenever I go in lol) ~ This mall is definitely an improvement over City Place though! (...I'm not sure how meaningful that is because City Place was pretty awful, so it's not too hard to be better than that place.) (~ I will try to update and remember to add pictures the next time I am there)

Yelp
In the era of the dying mall, Ellsworth Place is an oddity - a mall coming back to life. It used to be called City Place and was deader than dead several years ago - in fact I recommended it for urban spelunking in another review. They've added several nice anchor stores of the discount variety: Marshall's, Burlington, Ross, and TJ Maxx as well as a Michael's and a Dave & Buster's. The smaller stores aren't much, but there is a GNC, a Hair Cuttery, a Noodles & Company, a PNC bank, and most importantly a Ben & Jerry's. No food court. The discount stores vary in their quality but most of them are slightly smaller versions of what you'd find anywhere else. The main problem I have is the crazy layout of this mall...it's stuffed into a tiny block and goes up 5-6 stories, and they've got the escalators scattered all over.

Tracey T.

Yelp
Free parking garage on weekend across the malls that connects to the mall as well by a indoor walkway. Beware long lines at ross, Marshall, tj maxx, and Burlington coat factory. Plenty of places to eat and sit to relax. Industrial style building inside which I liked. Bring your own bag if you plan on going shopping to save on them charging for a bag btw!

Antonio H.

Yelp
"Build it and they will come". A famous quote from the movie; Field Of Dreams. The known as City Place mall has been revamped and is now Ellsworth Plaza. The once ghost town like mall that only attracted teens looking for a place to hangout, has regained vitality with the new look and retail stores that will boost the diversity of shoppers. Ellsworth Plaza is building a good rep, that makes dealing with the horrible traffic around it; to not be so bad.

Lakeia S.

Yelp
Not a fan of this place at all. I will not be returning at all. Elevators not work. Restrooms are nasty. Not enough stores for me to make another trip back here.

Luke S.

Yelp
I just had a awful experience. I got stabbed 2 times by my sneakers named Huarachee. Im disappointed in the manufacture of this item. Im disgusted that they put razor blades in my SHOES! Thankyou Yours Truly Rob.

Anwar H.

Yelp
Still has a long way to go. Not enough shops present to give a worthwhile rating, Its mostly empty, and even with the grand opening of TJ Maxx there just isn't enough civilian foot traffic; especially ramping up for the holidays. Hopefully with the mid-2016 mall grand re-opening with shops such as ROSS, Foot Locker, Michaels, D&B and Not Your Average Joe's, more folks will be willing to drive to this area for a unique shopping experience. I just hope that we'll get some higher-end shopping options as well, as every store I enjoy spending money at is in Bethesda/Rockville.

Katie R.

Yelp
Needs another elevator. We waited forever for the elevator with our stroller. Then it filled up on our floor. Then we went up instead of down and a few more people crammed in. Most people were accompanying strollers or elderly. The mall wasn't even very busy and the elevator was overloaded. Big oversight.

Arija R.

Yelp
It's such a short walk from the Silver Spring Metro Station! My boyfriend and I love how convenient it is to DC. And there's so much to do in Downtown Silver Spring, too! Can't wait for the grand reopening of Ellsworth Place.

Alice R.

Yelp
Until they figure out adequate ventilation for Blue Pearl buffet, it is really unpleasant to enter the mall. The oders are overwhelming. Should be a simple fix for all of us to enjoy. I really hope ventilation is addressed.
