Elly's Review - Juarez - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"Admittedly, Elly’s feels like it could very well be a Brooklyn transplant. There’s natural wine, a custom wooden DJ booth filled with vinyl, and lots of arms covered in tattoos. The food definitely isn’t Mexican—it’s more of a rustic, cooked-in-a-wood-oven menu—but they do incorporate local ingredients like huitlacoche when available, as well as smoky, spicy salsa macha. It’s a bit further from the rest of the restaurants near the , but the setting is beautiful and worth the 25-minute walk (or five-minute Uber)." - Guillaume Guevara

Google
One of my best favorite deli! The staffs are so kind. We love them and my family go often.

Google
This grocery store is a haven for those seeking unique and highquality products. Pzaz caffeinated breath spray is a prime example of their exceptional offerings.

Robin Williumson

Google
They've got this unique Pzaz breath spray that's an absolute game-changer! It's the small things that make this bodega feel like a neighborhood treasure.

Lacey Galen

Google
Great staff! I’ve been popping in here for years as a quick place to grab a few things, and they also have a decent selection of fancier stuff than your average corner store. But I’m finally reviewing because this morning I had to leave my apartment in the middle of making breakfast because I realized my oven’s pilot light was out and I was out of matches. When I asked the cashier at Elly’s if they had matches, she very kindly gave me a few little matchbooks that they kept behind the counter, not intended for sale, and didn’t charge me. Especially in 2020, I’m grateful for local businesses that lend a helping hand!

Eva McEnrue

Google
Elly’s is always a delightful experience. They carry the perfect selection of organic products, fresh produce and bodega essentials. The staff warmly greets you with a smile. A true neighborhood gem.

Google
Really pleasant space, experience, and service. But many products are intensely over-priced -- the markups are aggressive.

Claire Hackett

Google
Love you guys! But just wanted to let you know that today you sold me chocolate covered pretzels from 2021

Jared Cornell

Google
Nice NY neighborhood “market”. If you’re from here you know what I mean. A little expensive, but come on we’re in Brooklyn. If you wanted to it could be your grocery store. Not a bodega. It will be open during the next superstorm snowpocalypse or whatever.

Yelp
Great selection of delicious snacks and spices! Bodega vibe but S-Tier! Every yummy item rotates near as I can tell, and the staff at NYC throughout.

Mirian V.

Yelp
Love Elly's Market. They carry a variety of organic item , and love the sour dough bread.. nice and clean market..

J N.

Yelp
Super convenient, well-organized, high-quality produce.

Yelp
The staff is very awful and insult you while you are shopping in a different language. Woman today wearing a puffy rag was being dismissive. Specially because i was taking time looking for what I wanted.

Yelp
They have quite a variety of things in the small space. The staff is nice. Also they're open until late and even on some of major holidays. It's very convenient that I can buy organic shampoo or vegan ice cream or whatever without going farther supermarkets. Obviously, those are fancy items and I understand this shop charges for the convenience, but some things have really outrageous prices. It's a little sneaky that they often don't show the price on those. (A bag of chips: $6. A pack of strawberries: $8.) Generally, if I walk a few more blocks to the Whole Foods, I save one or two $ for the exact same item or can get more fresh fruits/vegetables. But still, some other things have reasonable price and well selected. Just a little tiring to pay close attention when choosing what to buy here.

Yelp
This is a neighborhood store that has a bit of everything. The staff are friendly, always smiles & super helpful. If you need something for the home, whether it be food or household & pet supplies this stores got it. I love the neighborly vibe this place has as well. Just go!

Yelp
They are definitely over priced. However things are always fresh and they have a great selection. Always good for a quick fruit cup or cheese :) They stay open till 12 which is great for a late night snack! Love the original owner Elly, but it has since been sold to new owners.

Yelp
I've seen numerous reviews here about staff at Elly's being rude & hostile-- unfortunately I completely agree. It's gotten to the point where I only go in there if absolutely necessary-- & only bc I live around the corner. I've lived in the neighborhood 8-9 years, & it's become progressively worse. No eye contact, no greeting, & literally ignoring questions from customers. Total silence. When they finally said something, it was only to practically yell after a customer asked about a price increase. I get that these are challenging times for everyone, but they are rude as hell. The guys working there in the evening are the worst-- so if you have to stop in I recommend daytime hours only! To be clear, the staff was actually kind & friendly there up until around 2016-17, but it's gotten much worse. I used to be friends w staff there when I first moved to the neighborhood-- they knew customers, chatted, were definitely part of our block. I think owners & management changed at some point. The daytime staff, mostly women, are still friendlier than at night (as one other reviewer mentioned), but never seem to stay working there long-- either they can't stand it there, or they're being fired indiscriminately. The place is also WAY overpriced.... but that's expected at these upscale organic bodegas ($7 for Hagen Das ice cream, $4.50 for chips, etc). That wouldn't deter me for occasional night-snacks just based on convenience, but at this point I try to completely avoid this place. I'd absolutely spend your money elsewhere if you can walk a few extra blocks. Theres another small bodega across the street, and one up a few blocks on dekalb near Carlton. Also Waverly Market/Key Foods is about a 5 minute walk (right below Clinton, on Waverly Pl near Greene Ave). And the best place of course, is Fresh Garden up on the Fulton/Lafayette intersection. Best, most awesome people there! Also they have the best overall food, best chocolate, & best gluten free selection. It's worth the extra walk!

Yelp
I'm honestly a bit confused on the reviews that say Elly's is overpriced. I went in here to buy oranges, organic eggs, and almond milk, and the oranges were the same price as Key Foods on Myrtle ($1 each for Sunkist navels), the eggs were $0.20 more ($6.79 versus $6.59 for Nature's Yoke), and the almond milk was $1 more ($5.99 versus $4.99 for Califa Farms). To the extent that the prices were higher than a grocery store, a convenience store like this will almost always have higher prices than grocery stores (higher rent per square foot, higher wholesale prices for goods), and I found the price difference to be reasonable for the convenience. I will still schlep to Key Foods for their deli section, Cigar City Jai Alai (love that beer and they always have it in stock), and their popsicle selection, but I'm really glad to have Elly's when I don't want to make that trek. On customer service, I've always found the folks here to be polite. I also find that their friendliness depends on their English language skills (those that are more limited are a bit more reserved, those that are better are more gregarious). Never had an issue here.

Yelp
Love this place, they keep stock lots of bougie items like gluten-free etc. and have a loyalty program for you have a pin and you get money off purchases. Great addition to the neighborhood

Yelp
I'm not quite sure what the bad reviews are on here, and quite frankly I don't understand. But just because something didn't happen to me doesn't mean it didn't happen. All my experiences at Elly's was pleasant. The staff treated me politely and with respect. I like their selection of groceries. They have good produce and organic fruits, as well as some select Asian foods like frozen ramen, mochi snacks, and instant noodles! I think the store is well stocked and clean as well. I can always rely on them.
google avatar

Angelique R.

Yelp
Expensive! But right on time not your average corner bodega. Where else you gonna get Burt's Bees lip balm and flowers in the middle of the night?
google avatar

Hans C.

Yelp
Not great. From the outside, it looks like a warm and inviting place to spend a few bucks. Instantly you know the deal; gourmet items, fresh (?) produce and a long, shiny beverage cooler. The staff is nice enough; they sure do smile a lot. Normally, I'd give this one about four stars. HOWEVER! After a long day at work, I just wanted one of those prepackaged vegetarian sandwiches from Elly's. Walking home from the Q train, I stopped in, paid 5 bucks (!) and brought it all back home. Moldy sandwich, Elly's. Foul! Yellow flag! So, I walk back to Elly's, sorta steamed, but I was going to let them live on this one: it happens, no problem. I showed the woman behind the counter, discreetly as not to dissuade other customers may I add, and all she could say was "So what? What do you want me to do?" Well, I got legit steamed and started saying the word "MOLDY" loud enough for people to hear. She coughed up the bread, and I went to Bagel World. F-U, Elly's.

Yelp
I don't know the history of this place other than what it is now, so I can't comment on what used to be like. However, I will say that, while the prices are slightly higher than all the other markets in the area, I still head over when I am on DeKalb. The store is always neat, clean, and fully stocked. I've never encountered any rude cashier. In fact, the ladies and gents I've always come in contact with are very friendly. If I wanted cheaper prices, I'd plan out my shopping during the week a little bit better. But sometimes I just want to grab ice cream or salad stuff, and don't want to trek all the way over to Associated on Myrtle, (which by the way, while have gotten better on their produce selection, is still pretty pitiful when it comes to tomatoes or lettuce.) As a convenient local grocery store, it serves its purpose.

Yelp
I don't think these folks are hip to Yelp because all the reviews say the same thing and I understand why. They are not very helpful, don't really make eye contact and barely say two words to you. I asked about smoothie powders and the cashier shook her head no. I think she may have said no - not sure. I thought it was odd that they had nothing. Usually, there are some green powders at least. They seemed well stocked and had some pre-made sandwiches but were expensive. They also had cleaners, frozen foods, pet foods and produce. So my review is okay but not great.

Yelp
NY is expensive but this place goes overboard. I understand it is a private business and such but somethings are just crazy. They have a great variety of natural/organic type things but you could probably find other stuff loads cheaper a couple blocks down. Like I bought these organic salted chips here for 2.99 and saw them for 1.19 a store or two down, not a huge difference but enough to raise an eyebrow. I love the look of the building, it's narrow inside but enough space to accommodate a quick shopping trip. I found the people who work here however to be super friendly, so no complaints there. Overall, I wouldn't make this place my to-go place but maybe emergency stuff since I live atop.

Yelp
I've had just about enough of these Koreans business practices, their mean to the Mexican workers and the one be it so few polite girls that they UNusually have working in the mornings that a COMMUNITY gets to know they swiftly and with out warning AX them on a consistent bases for what ever Far East business practice of Ooo I dunno don't let people get to know you or they may like you so much they will be repelled to shop here as much!?!?!? This is third time we all here in bklyn have gotton to know someone who knows what we want, knows our kids, asks us personal questions making us feel like we matter to them and this is the thanks we get from the mamba get for shopping consistently in his overpriced shit hole!?!??
google avatar

Roni S.

Yelp
I don't really think this place is that overpriced, nor do I think the staff is unfriendly. Maybe the mean cashier was on his lunch break? In all seriousness, I thought the selection was actually pretty decent and the the store was laid out fairly well. I did appreciate their large selection of frozen meals, enough variety for just about anyone. It's just a bit far from my hood for me to shop here regularly, but I wouldn't mind going back here if I am in the area.
google avatar

Violette H.

Yelp
I am just a sucker for supermarkets that carry things not usually found in your C-Town, Associated, or Bravo. Organic produce, lots of veggie-friendly options, and a large selection of tea - sign me up! Since I no longer work in the area of the healthy shopping mecca known as Westerly, I have to make do. I pass Elly's twice a day and have been intrigued by them since I saw the row of Seventh Generation products in the window. For a small-ish shop, their selection is actually decent. They have just about every kind of Yogi Tea imaginable, and a modest selection of cheeses, pre-made foods, and other treats. It definitely works as a quick stop-over to pick up some essentials. The prices are pretty steep though and I wouldn't recommend going there for an actual shopping trip. The cost of goods is primarily why my rating is only two stars. The stock workers, also are pretty rude. If you're trying to access a shelf that they're re-stocking by, they won't move out of your way, or temporarily let you pass. Thankfully, this grocery is pretty empty, even around 5pm on weekdays, so that rarely becomes an issue.

Yelp
Elly's used to be the best/worst fake gourmet deli in Fort Greene. Their large, pleasant wrap-around window display contained rows of 'upscale' looking chips and snacks, hinting that inside, you'd find tons of similar stuff. Then you'd open the front door and find...a pile of old bananas, stacks of yellow onions, grotty red apples, and a few tattered copies of the previous day's NY Post. In short, a standard issue bodega. You'd been had. So imagine my surprise when a few days ago I ventured inside to find...AN ACTUAL GOURMET DELI. The place has been transformed. It's immaculate, stocked from top to bottom with all the fancy organic/veggie/high-end products one could possibly hope for, as far as the eye can see. We're talking Manhattan style, folks, and it's been a long time coming. It is, of course, very expensive. But as far as I'm concerned, it's kinda worth it. The gent at the counter was friendly enough, too, and the place is both spacious and spotless. Funny, though--the window display is still the same as it always was. (I guess sometimes you can judge a book by its cover.)

Yelp
Way over priced!! $4.00 for one can of soup is excessive. I get it, the area is up and coming but taking advantage of your customers is not the way to do it! They claim to be organic yet I went in there to buy an onion and cut it in half for it to be rotten to the core. I went back into the store to find out over half of them were that way. Then the guy asked me, "What do you want, your money back??" with an attitude. No muthafucka, I want a good onion!!! The hell... Store that are privately own tends to be this way... No customer service, reach all they way up their asses to pull out outrages prices and think it's okay. All these reviews are similar and still no change. The only way store that are this cocky suffer is to simply stop shopping there. People out working hard for their money and oh have stores like this fuckin you in the end! Ridiculous.
google avatar

S R.

Yelp
Agree that the store is a bit overpriced. I do most of my shopping at Trader Joe's but this is where I go to once a week when I run out of milk. They have tasty and amazing milk and yoghurt selections that nobody else in the neighbourhood has. Try to buy nothing else from them, occasionally get say soap or toiletries too, but only if I really needed it. And no one's ever been unfriendly. I think the folks who own it are Japanese so perhaps there's a language problem? I'm an immigrant myself, so I'm always sensitive to how people with a different language and set of mannerisms may come across.

Thomas P.

Yelp
Horrible customer service and overpriced! Shop somewhere else, this place isn't worth a visit!

Yelp
WARNING! DO NOT SHOP HERE! I walked in the other day and a guy was spraying pesticide all over the floors indiscriminately near open produce! I couldn't believe what I was seeing! A giant canister with skull and crossbones! I asked the man at the counter why the hell they're spraying pesticide on the floor in the middle of the day with people shopping all around? Don't they know that shit is poison? Toxic? The man said, 'No, it's safe. I think it's safe.' I asked if they sprayed it ALL throughout the store and he said 'yes' with a quizzical look, like I was crazy for thinking anything was wrong. I bought a package of toxic turkey for my cat and ran out of there as fast as I could, not looking back. I always noticed a funny scent about the packaged goods I bought there. Now I know! It's roach spray, people. Tell your friends! Not only a rip-off in terms of pricing, but also a toxic hellhole. I have vowed never to shop there ever again. $8.95 for spaghetti sauce. Pesticide to track home to your loved ones and poison your pets is free.

Yelp
I'm not normally so compelled to write a review on yelp, especially if i'm just going to reiterate the sentiments left by other members. this is definitely the exception since i've experienced nothing but kind and courteous service at Elly's . the cashiers are always polite and nobody has ever made us feel unwelcome. Once, my husband accidentally broke a bottle of mineral water in the store. They not only shrugged it off but didn't charge us (even though we offered to pay). maybe we've just been lucky, but don't go in expecting rude service. i was shocked to read such unhappy reviews. the down side to elly's is the price, most definitely. we've only gone for specialty items we can't find at our local grocery and the occasional late night snack.
google avatar

Amanda H.

Yelp
Elly's is definitely not a cheap date -- but the selection (brands and range of products they carry), quality (lots of organic brands, which is v. important to me) and service (unfailingly friendly) are superb. I would never do the bulk of my shopping here b/c of the cost, but for picking up a few items now and then over the course of the week, it's perfect.
google avatar

Joye P.

Yelp
One good thing that I can say about Elly's is that the wares are organic and sustainably produced. Costs more, true, but they are relying on a more informed consumer. I thought it was ok.
google avatar

Victor T.

Yelp
I have to give this place another star, since the service has improved. Also, they are open until 11:00 pm, which worked out great on a rainy night.
google avatar

Bre D.

Yelp
Great selection of yuppy foodstuffs -- like a miniature Whole Foods. I'd buy a lot more of my groceries there if it wasn't so darn expensive. Everything costs about $1 more than it does elsewhere.

Anneka W.

Yelp
OVERPRICED. So so so overpriced. . But So convenient and a decent selection for a small to medium sized store. However I always leave this place feeling dooped because I know I could have spent half the price if I had walked a couple blocks out of my way to another grocery store. Please Elly's lower your prices!

mart b.

Yelp
This place is terrible. It may look nice, but their prices are ridiculous. 6 bayleaves for $7,50 ? Wow. Small bottle of refined, crap olive oil $9. The people that work there don't help either, not helpful to say the least.
google avatar

Tiffanie T.

Yelp
Frozen Kashi margarita pizza is amazing. Go to market for specific things. Not a great place to do your monthly stock.

Yuri N.

Yelp
Good selection, but they are expensive, the staff is not friendly. They display a $10 minimum credit card charge requirement. My amount was $8.08, and the clerk continued to insist on it even after I reminded him that MasterCard and Visa do not allow minimum charge requirements. Last time.

Nelly M.

Yelp
I like these guys. A lot. When I first moved to the neighborhood, there wasn't much in the way of fresh produce and stuff, so I was more than willing to make the 10-minute trek to Elly's. Seven years later, I still am, even though the area's supermarket and bodega options have improved. The place is always stocked with fresh produce, meats, and cheeses (it's also a haven for vegans - lots of non-meat and non-dairy options), as well as essential pantry items and cruelty-free personal grooming products. You might pay a little more than you would at the local Associated, but it's always such a pleasure to peruse the aisles that I don't mind, and there's also the convenience factor to consider. The counter-staff are always friendly, and it's open until midnight - another plus.

Joaquin P.

Yelp
It's insanely overpriced, even for an all-organic specialty market. The counter guys are very rude and borderline racist at times. The worst thing is the smell. Can someone tell me what that funky odor is? I'll echo the sentiments from an earlier yelp- go to Trader Joe's instead. If you need emergency items, they can most likely be found at the much improved College Market 1 block down on DeKalb.
