Where to Find a Great Steak Around Denver - Eater Denver

"John Elway may have been known for leading comebacks during his days as the Broncos’ quarterback, but his eponymous steakhouse has been a hit ever since it burst on the scene in Cherry Creek in 2004. These days diners can enjoy a decadent meal at one of the four locations scattered around Denver. The USDA prime beef comes with superb flavor thanks to a 35-ingredient rub." - Josie Sexton, Gigi Sukin, Paul Albani-Burgio

Google
This was our first time to this establishment and we'll definitely be back. The food, service, and atmosphere were all on point. The steak came out tender and juicy but with that crispy sear on the outside that you want. Very attentive and kind wait staff. Very sad this location is closing.

Google
The entire experience was great, excellent service, food, and environment. My steak was superb, cooked to my preference, and a good size. Sides we ordered were the lobster tater tots and Mac and Cheese. Tater tots were wonderful, and Mac and cheese was good but not a step above other establishments, I would definitely want to try another side on a future visit. Price is very expensive, but for a special occasion definitely an experience worth having.

If you are willing and able to drop a wad of money on a meal, this place is a good choice. I only go once in a blue moon for a special occasion. I like to start with the Elway Spritz cocktail. Warm sourdough bread is nice to have while waiting for the meal to arrive. Steak or salmon? I chose salmon and my friend got steak. Both were good. Vegetables we chose this time were asparagus and creamed spinach. Nice dessert of creme brulee and berries. My willingness to pay that much money for one meal is waning. I am not sure how many more times I will go there. I think the end is near.

Google
This restaurant has a great atmosphere and better then average food. Our steaks were cooked to perfection which can be difficult when you order a filet medium and the steak is thick. The prime rib had good flavor but I was expecting it to be a little more tender. Overall a great place for a special occasion where you would like a nice atmosphere to enjoy your food.

Google
Came for my birthday and although I Was Fashionably late the service was Immaculate The Waitress was an absolute doll and accommodated My Family and I in the most gracious way. The food was impeccable I highly recommend this location for a phenomenal experience

Google
The staff was kind and friendly. The atmosphere is elegant, good for special occasions. But thats where I came with these two stars (one for staff and another for the seating). The house salad was a salad that you could do better at home, not sure why its 12$. The burger is called "smash burger" but its not really smashed. I huge piece of patty that is placed in between buns (I would not order it if I knew its this way). The ribeye steak was so off. It felt as if its low quality steak even though we ordered it to be cooked meduim. You could get a 10 times better rib eye steak at 801 Chophouse resturant. The mash potato and Broccoli were nice.

Google
Our server was really nice. We ordered the crab cake appetizer, filet with fried lobster, braised short ribs, and wilted spinach. Chocolate cake for dessert. Overall it was good. The spinach was way too salty and short ribs too fatty. Crab cake was great and filet was great.

Google
Fine dining at its best! The lunch menu comes with amazing options from prime rib enchiladas, Asian chicken salad, and coconut shrimp! The cremé brûlée spoons were scrumptious yet perfect to top off our lunch. The wine list is wonderful and includes moscato d’asti for those who like their wine a little sweet! The service was fast and friendly! For top notch lunch and dinner I highly recommend!

Yelp
Our first visit to Elways was a great experience. We took my brother, whom we haven't seen in a while. This is a perfect restaurant environment for special occasions. Our server was very attentive, professional and had a good sense of humor. The food was excellent. The prime rib was top notch, as was the roasted chicken, prime rib enchiladas, sourdough bread and onion rings. The wine selection was good and the iced tea was refreshing and consistently refilled. I will say that the price point is quite high compared to other fine dining venues, but every once in a while, it is okay to splurge.

Yelp
We had an amazing dinner and our server in the dining room was outstanding. We had a good meal and wanted to enjoy a nightcap. As we wanted our server to turn the table and have another seating we went to the bar. We ordered two beers and drank them at a very leisured pace and paid our bar tab. When we left, we were chased down by Michael, the bar tender, and he gave us the check saying we didn't pay. We said we did pay and he walked us back to the bar. Once he confirmed we did pay he dismissed us without even offering an apology. I may be sensitive, but I have never been chased down and accused of dining and dashing. Maybe I'm wrong to think that an apology would have been in order with this situation rather than just dismissed. Sadly, it was a very negative experience to what could've been, or should have been a wonderful $400 night. Thank you Mike.

Yelp
Ambiance: looked like a typical upscale steakhouse 4/5 Service: we ordered the surf & turf special upon the recommendation of our server, Don. He was personable & attentive 5/5 Food: the filet mignon was perfectly prepared, the seafood was so fresh, the truffle butter cauliflower was exceptional, and the wine that the sommelier, Chris, suggested was perfectly paired with our meal 5/5 Validated parking I highly recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
I came with a big group and they were wiling to split the check which was appreciated. Our server was friendly and helpful. All the food was great! However, it was challenging for me to get an Uber pickup because of their parking gate. My driver didn't want to go past the gate to pick me up.

Greg H.

Yelp
The ambiance was fine if a little tired. Service was outstanding! Large Ceasar Salad uninspired. The $85 Porterhouse cooked rare as ordered but lacked taste and was very tough. Au Gratin potatoes ..poor presentation... not good. Mushroom side was over spiced. All in all a big disappointment.

Yelp
This is inside denver airport. The food is great. The menu and drinks were great. Service was outstanding. Terminal b

Yelp
Excellent brunch- albeit a bit of an abbreviated menu Excellent service Good portion size

Yelp
Another wonderful large family gathering at Elways! Delicious Steak and the Halibut is wonderful! We loved the Cheesecake for dessert and the Creme Brûlée. The service was fantastic!

Yelp
Really good steak house. We came for a friends birthday party and it was nice. We had the patio area and although it's typically cold outside it was tented and heated. Service was awesome and attentive for a large party. Steak was delicious and the truffle fries were hella bomb. Everyone at the party seem to enjoy there food as well.

Yelp
I had a business meeting with two potential clients. The dinner and atmosphere were great. The service and service was excellent.

Yelp
We've been to the Cherry Creek and downtown locations a couple times each and the Denver airport location many times. Elway's is consistently awesome. The kids and I like Elway's so much we would plan air travel to have a connection via the Denver airport to hit the Elway's at the airport. Their aged NY steak is my favorite and the kids like the ribeye and filet. Sides are also consistently good - steak fries, spinach, baked potato are our favorites. More options and real steak knives at the non-airport locations.

Yelp
For me, the best steakhouse in Denver! Love their sides and the Ribeye steak which is always cooked perfectly!

Yelp
I had calimari and one of the burgers. But the one with egg. Both delicious, and perfectly cooked. As good as the food was, Jaimie's service was even better!! I'll be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was good, but service for a high end steak house really needs improvement. I sat at the bar on a Tuesday night and the bartenders were inattentive to say the least. I ordered an old fashion and would have ordered another but they never came back (even with my empty glass sitting in front of me for 30 plus minutes) It was a slow night and the bartenders were watching videos on their phones behind the register. I finished my steak ( which was great) and just sat there for 15 minutes waiting for them to come around. This could be a great place, but I will never know because I won't be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Went for a birthday, two kids, two adults. Filet and prime rib were amazing. We split entrees and they were kind enough to split them before serving us. Sides: Brussels sprouts and au gratin potatoes. Everything was cooked to perfection. Device and ambience was extraordinary.

Yelp
This place came highly recommended and I can attest. Our experience happened to be on St patty's day- obviously busier than normal weekend. However, despite that, everything went timely. We made reservations 2 days before so that was easy. We were seated and the staff were so so so pleasant. From the seating hostess, to the bartenders, to the servers and clean up staff. Everyone had a smile on their face. Now, the food! Yum yum yum. We ordered the jumbo shrimp and jumbo doesn't cut it. They were like lobster sized. We also ordered the grilled artichokes- delicious. We shared a bone in rib eye and many drinks throughout the evening. The picture of the steak says it all. And topped off our evening with crème brûlée . I recommend!!!!!

Yelp
What a wonderful restaurant for a special occasion! My husband and I decided to dine at the downtown location after perusing the menus (each location is different!) and made an online reservation. The valet was convenient and we were able to be sat at our table right away. The space FEELS like a swanky steakhouse, with the ceilings high and lighting dimmed. We did find it odd that there is no dress code given the vibe and the cost of the experience, unlike many other five star restaurants in the city. Our service from door to door was absolutely impeccable! Our server (I really wish I remembered his name!) was attentive, confident, and provided excellent recommendations. We started with cocktails which were PHENOMENAL, so good that we never even got to the wine list! Our meal was timed perfectly, with the food and drinks arriving with beautiful presentation. The quality of the steak and seafood was superb, and our appetites were absolutely satisfied and then some (we had enough for a full lunch the next day!) Overall, I can't really find one thing to complain about, we are so impressed and had a lovely time. Thank you Elways, you've created such a wonderful experience!

Yelp
So we ended up going here for our 5 year anniversary after another restaurant botched our reservation. The staff is amazing, but the food left a lot to be desired. I ordered the porterhouse while my wife ordered the ribeye. We also ordered the calamari and crabcakes for appetizers. For our sides, we ordered the mushrooms and Brussel sprouts. To jump it off, our server described that Elway's uses their own seasoning and etc to create their own unique sear. Now the sear was crispy, but...the steaks turned out tasting burnt. I eat my steaks medium (I hate cool/cold meat while I'm chewing). The steaks were cooked to perfection. But the sear...well, I couldn't finish. When I got home, I gave my daughter the leftover steak and told her that you get to try a hundred dollar steak. She was not impressed. She is 13 but with a pretty refined palette (God bless her bf's.). Now for the sides; mushrooms were great, but we had no idea that the brussels sprouts were so heavy. They were battered, and we ended tossing them the next day. In conclusion, staff was amazing, but if you love steaks, there are better options unless it was an off night

Trish S.

Yelp
Food was tasty and delicious so please don't get be wrong. But this is a three star that wants to be a five star. Came for mother's day brunch and the menu was shortened and did not have the burger my husband wanted. The sizes are much smaller than last time here. The giant breakfast burrito was very small. It all tasted great but left us feeling very underwhelmed.
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Delicious for a night out where you don't have a budget. I got the salmon and my brother got the steak. We enjoyed both! The turtle cheesecake was a steal in our opinion. We were expecting a slice but got a whole mini cheesecake! Waitress was super nice and was very attentive.
google avatar

Martha C.

Yelp
Amazing staff, amazing food, amazing environment! 10/10 would recommend for any occasion be it a date night, anniversary celebration or really any celebration. Steaks are made to order, we order ours medium and the steaks were perfect once revived tender enough to be cut by the knife and melt in your mouth. We ordered mashed potatoes and au gratin potatoes both delicious! If you still have space for dessert definitely get the Bon Bon cake!
google avatar

Yelp
As usual the food is very good. Service great. Nice atmosphere. House salad excellent. Refreshing and very tasty. Lamb chop fondue off the charts excellent Porterhouse steak fantastic. Calamari average. Like 2.5 stars. Cheeseburger excellent fries excellent Crab fried rice spectacular Mushrooms very good Desserts are great. 5 stars despite the average calamari.

Yelp
My friend and I ate a few hours earlier and had a hankering for dessert. I'm from out of town and also aware of who John Elway is, but had no idea he had a restaurant(s). Our curiosity and stomachs lead us check it out. We ordered the classic crème brûlée, Elsa's Keylime pie and the classic ding dong. All of these desserts were exquisite especially, the crème brûlée. My least favorite was the classic ding dong because it was much too decadent. Then again we did order three desserts. Ha! It was a go big or go home type day. I guess we were trying to channel our inner John Elway. Anyway, The ambience was lovely and seemed high end. The service was perfect and I would love to go back to enjoy a delicious steak and another crème brûlée.
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Had a great meal at Elways. I had the bone in ribeye which was cooked perfectly and the taste was delicious. The Caesar salad was also good but nothing special, it was just a good salad. The bar staff was great and I would definitely come back here. I hope you have a great meal here as well.

Yelp
I have to give this restaurant five stars for having some of the best steaks in Denver. We were there to celebrate a birthday dinner, and everything, from the appetizers to the main courses, was absolutely delectable. The Mac and cheese with a filet mignon is my personal favorite; order extra to take home. The steak was perfectly prepared with peppercorn sauce and cooked medium-well. The birthday boy received a small chocolate cake (I later ate).

Yelp
Finally got to try Elway's! Such a nice treat and first classy date night since Covid and having a baby. Made reservations for 5pm on a Tuesday but didn't really need one. It was pretty empty (but filled up after 6:30). Upon checking in, they validated our parking and promptly seated us. We ordered: - Half bottle of Stags Leap (bomb ass cab) -- about 3 glasses total. - Asparagus (large family portion and very delicious) - Fried brussels sprouts (savory and satisfying. Cooked perfectly and the green sauce with the pistachios were very complementary) - 6oz filet mignon; medium (perfectly cooked and came with three scrumptious chili peppers) -- I'm always amazed at how filling a 6oz is... cause she thicc (sorry, I meant for this review to be classy but alas, here we are...) - bone-in ribeye (the fatty flavor was so satisfying. This is my husband's fav ribeye) - loaded baked potato (saved this one for last because it stole the show. They're growing some next level potatoes here... this thing was a tank and it was stacked. Absolutely could have shared one and still been stuffed. Slow clap) Oh yes, we also had dessert. Creme brûlée with a side of fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries)--highly recommend. Super creamy texture but not decadent or too sweet. Nice thin layer of crunchy caramel on top. Perfection. I appreciate how GENEROUS the portions were, prompt and personable the staff was, and that everything we ate was phenomenal. Definitely one of the best steakhouses I've ever dined at. Thanks for making our long-overdue return to fine dining such a wonderful experience!

Yelp
They deserve 10 stars. Our waiter, Paul, was probably the best waiter I've ever had and we could tell he was phenomenal after 2 minutes. He is very personable, introduces the specials, etc. Oh, and the food was really good too

Yelp
I was traveling for work and had never been to Elway's before. Had always been a fan of him as a quarterback for the Broncos back in the day, so I wanted to stop in. Sat at the bar and had a couple of their pineapple express martinis which were so good! I also had a jumbo lump crab cake that was amazing! The bartenders were very friendly and attentive. Very glad I decided to try this restaurant!

Christopher B.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, great service and a good steak. Wedge salad is very good too. I tried the ribeye, and it was a good size but a little pricey.

Yelp
I love winding down at a nice restaurant, when you're layover in Denver is 2.5 hours. I didn't know what to choose at first. Do I go healthy? Sure. So I opted for the Asian chicken salad. This was very flavorful, and so delicious! It's a mix of Napa cabbage, edamame, snap peas, bok choy and cashews and celery for a delicious crunch, and the right amount of their miso ginger dressing. I then chose to go on the dark side and order their beer battered onion rings with their oh-so-awesome Creole Aioli and ketchup. That decision, made everything perfect! The ambiance here is very relaxed, and the service was just right. Longer layovers in Denver! Bring it on!

Yelp
Where is John Elway? We want to call him personally and let him know we had the BEST experience with Don at your establishment on Friday. Outstanding. Everything nowadays is so expensive so we have found that if you're going to go out l, be choosy, and pick the best places. Elway's and service from Don simply did.not.disappoint. Everything was on point from the recommendations to the presentation to the taste and again....top shelf service. I could go in but I'll post pictures and you can see for yourself.

Yelp
We came to celebrate our anniversary. Our first time at Elways and probably our last. We showed up on time for our reservation. The host sat us right away and was friendly. Our waitress Brandy was very friendly but did not go above and beyond service to make our night any special. We still tipped her 30% for friendly service and making sure our glasses were full. The prime rib was delicious. Very flavorful and cooked perfectly. I had the seafood salad and it wasn't the best but it was fresh. The loaded potato was also delicious. Cooked right and was huge. Their complimentary sourdough bread was good. We ordered a bottle of Cab and it was alright. Should have got a glass to try first. Overall the experience was not the best. They gave everyone who was celebrating a birthday or graduation a chocolate cake but didn't bring us one! I was pretty disappointed. We ordered the key lime pie and they put happy anniversary on it but still had to pay for it. I would not come here to celebrate an anniversary dinner. Nothing stood out. Restaurant manager should have checked my notes for celebrating an anniversary when I made my reservation on OpenTable. That would have made me feel like they've paid attention to detail. It was never mentioned by any staff member. Lastly, bathrooms were dirty. I've been in restaurant management for years and for an upscale restaurant to have a dirty ugly outdated bathroom is not good. Sorry, but first and last time for us.

Hake J.

Yelp
High quality food. Great service! Best chocolate cake I've ever had! Nice atmosphere!

Yelp

Yelp
Excellent food. Had the enchiladas, everything was perfect from the meat to sauce and tortilla. Daughter, Joni, had the burger on a brioche bun and the skinny fries. All excellent. We shared a key lime pie that I highly recommend. Our server, Paul, and the support staff were all spot on. Always makes the experience better. The facility is plush without being over done. Kudos to the Elway team.

Yelp
This was my first visit to Elway's. I travel to Denver for work regularly but had not had the privilege to make it in until now. If you are looking for a great steakhouse this place will deliver the experience. The steak selection was fantastic and it was cooked perfectly to temperature. The wine selection was very robust. If your looking for a Napa or a Pinot from the PNW they had some amazing options. The staff provided great recommendations on cocktails, wine, sides and were spot on with refills. Overall great service, food and drinks. What more could you ask for? Oh wait the Friends Experience is right next door atm so dinner and entertainment!

MaryAnne R.

Yelp
The Best in all of the above!!!! It's been our family favorite for 16 years. The greatest for birthday celebrations, anniversaries, and out of.town guests. Even takeout is special. My favorite Quarterback and Restaurant *

Yelp
Elway's never disappoints when I am in Denver. I took my granddaughter there for her 14th birthday, and she loved it. Our waitress made her feel so special with mocktails and a lovely dessert. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere from the entrance to the bar and dining room. I highly recommend trying it when you are in Denver.
google avatar

Kayleen J.

Yelp
Great food- even better service. This was a great evening for our anniversary! Our server gave us a complementary dessert and their steak rub too!

Duncan M.

Yelp
Nice restaurant with good service and ambiance, but the food was lacking. $77 bone in rib-eye was just a steak. Cut wasn't necessarily that tender or flavorful. Crab cake and Lobster tater tots were good. House salad,..just a salad. Meal was overall unimpressive especially when there are many other steakhouse options in Denver that are better.

Lisa M.

Yelp
Steak was "tough and chewy"- not what you would expect at a restaurant in the ritz Carlton. The French fries were over cooked and the broccoli was old. On a positive note the server was very gracious. Ambiance was realized and comfortable.
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
Elways is what you'd expect of a place named after John Elway! The food and service are beyond amazing. Don was our server and he took excellent care of us as we were there celebrating our sons 16th birthday. We ordered filet, prime rib, and salmon served with shrimp and crab on top. Sides were generous for three of us to share. We ordered two: broccoli and truffle fries. Everything was cooked to perfection. I normally don't care for any kind of cheese sauce on broccoli but it came served on the side and it was so yummy! Wine list is extensive and they have a cool cocktail list. It's a great place to celebrate a special occasion!
google avatar

Yelp
Service and food we're good. $15 to park at hotel. We all agreed we would be back. Great atmosphere.
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
Ehh it was ok. I feel like if it was the same restaurant with a different name it wouldn't be so popular in Denver. The lamp chop fondue was pretty good, but everything else was just average.
google avatar

Alisha Alexandra H.

Yelp
Elway's has been a name synonymous with Colorado since John Elway graced the football field with the Denver Broncos. Thus John Elway's fancy chophouse - Elways - is certainly a name that holds some clout in the Denver fine dining scene. This was my first time dining at the original Elway's location in Cherry Creek and it didn't disappoint. Elway's in Cherry Creek portrays a v formal ambience with warm browns and a sophisticated atmosphere. Courtney was our server and she was fabulous. For starters we had the Lamb Chop Fondue and the Grilled Artichoke. The Lamb Chop Fondue is made with Colorado Lamb lollipops served with green Chile cheese fondue & roasted sweet potatoes. This is the starter that put Elways on the map - we can now see (& taste) why. The lamb lollipops were perfectly seared with rosemary and garlic. The lollipops had a handsome brown crust with a thin layer of fat. The meat was tender, medium rare and wasn't too gamey making for nice, savory juicy bites (however, a word of advice to be careful when biting into the lollipops; I ended up chomping down on a stone hard piece of gristle which rocked my tooth). Now dip those perfect lamb lollipops into the piping hot green Chile cheese fondue and your tastebuds will be SINGING. The rich and zingy cheese fondue was ADDICTIVE (we ended up keeping it for the entire meal for more dipping). I would still go back to Elway's solely for the Lamb Chop Fondue. It's that good. The Grilled Artichoke is served with aioli, drawn butter, & lemon. The artichoke was ok - a bit over grilled. For our USDA Prime Hand Cut Steaks, I had the Filet and Ross had the New York Strip. The Filet 6 oz medium-rare with Alaskan Crab Legs - Garlic butter, & lemon. The filet was good and I really enjoyed the addition of the Alaskan Crab Legs (they were fresh). The New York Strip 12 oz with Maytag Blue Cheese Butter The New York Strip was perfect - it had a great bold, beefy bite and tender chew. The stout flavor and aroma of the Maytag Blue Cheese Butter added another dimension of taste to this NY strip; it really brought out the meat's robust flavor with a smooth tangy kick For sides we had the Lobster Tater Tots and the Thai Brussel Sprouts. The Lobster Tater Tots are topped with bacon, cheddar, & scallions and served with a small gravy boat of sherry beurre blanc. The Lobster Tater Tots were bomb! The crisp, large fritters were sweet from the lobster and nice and savory from the bacon & cheddar combo. We'll definitely order this side again in the future. The Thai Brussel Sprouts are served tempura style with toasted pistachios, bacon, and black truffle oil to top. I could have done without the brussel sprouts; they were a bit too breaded and just too heavy/large for a brussel sprout side. For dessert we had the Classic Ding Dong and Elsa's Key Lime Pie. The Classic Ding Dong is made with Devil's food, vanilla cream, and dark chocolate ganache. The Ding Dong was well presented but was a bit dry imo (Ross still loved this dessert). Elsa's Key Lime Pie is topped with whipped cream & blueberry sauce. This Key Lime Pie was incredible! Hands down the best Key Lime Pie I have had in Denver. It was sweet, creamy & rich with just the right amount of tangy zing! Huge thanks to Courtney for recommending this stellar dessert; it is Elway's most popular.

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated the ten year anniversary (10/11/12) of our engagement! I proposed to her in Cherry Creek so we wanted to spend some time there on our special day. We were very happy with everything! The service, the music, the atmosphere, it was very, very enjoyable! Our server, Carly, did an excellent job of taking care of us and making our time there memorable. Thanks for a wonderful time!

Tom K.

Yelp
Why in gods name would you go anywhere else the lamb is unreal the service is impeccable and if your lucky John Elway may show up

Yelp
We came here for my moms birthday and it was such a great experience! Our server was literally the sweetest human I have ever met! The food was delicious! My favorite would definitely have to be the shrimp cocktail, it was the best I have ever had!

Yelp
I'm not a big steak eater so I ordered the seafood chowder (GET IT!! there are huge pieces of CRAB in it!) and the salmon (a juicy big filet) and was not disappointed. The place is bustling with mostly older diners, I coulda sworn we were sitting next to the Golden Girls, so trying to get in to the 5:00-5:30pm seating will be tough. Make reservations! The wine list is extensive and there are so many choices on the appetizer/dinner menu that will please everyone.

Yelp
Yum. Love this place. It's perfect melt in your mouth type steaks. Sometimes I dream about it. I'm dreaming about it right now, which is why I decided to leave a review. The bison is randomly good, leaner than steak if you're adventurous. I mean sorta adventurous. Cause it's not like eating a worm right? Yeah then stop claiming to be so adventurous from eating bison, right?
