15 Essential Restaurants in Westwood Near UCLA | Eater LA

"Opened for decades in Westwood, this charming French bakery and cafe serves beautiful pastries, light salads, and easy sandwiches for the student and faculty crowd. Elysee works as a decent place for a study break, coffee date, or sweet afternoon snack." - Matthew Kang

The arrogance and prices of Paris in Westwood. Actually, Parisians are nicer and more attentive for service. We were a party of four, picked by my daughter. There’s no vegan options on the menu. My “Cobb Salad” was made with turkey and contained no cheese whatsoever. Dressing was nearly nonexistent. When I went to the counter and requested additional dressing, to the apparent manager or owner, I thought it would be forthcoming. After five minutes of watching the staff talk behind the counter, I went up a second time with the same request. She had completely forgotten about my request even though I had to leave my table to make it. This is self-serve at 4-star prices. Pretentious and forgettable. None of us thought it was worth a second visit. Cannot recommend unless you like to be ignored and quickly relieved of your funds. The breads, only, seemed acceptable. The food was not. Do not eat here.

Great vibes, delicious pastries and cakes, solid coffee with a pleasant environment for breakfast or lunch. Expect to pay a premium, but most agree the atmosphere and quality make it worth an occasional splurge.

Having lived in Westwood for a few years now, Elysee is one of my favorite spots here. Their Hot Mocha is my favorite of all the coffee shops I've had. Aside from their delicious cafe and bakery options, they also have salads, sandwiches, and pasta. The staff is always so kind, and the interior hosts a lot of seating. Additionally, they have oat milk as an alternative, which I love, and they have wifi and a few outlets, which is optimal for students. My favorite thing of all is Their hours. They don't close early like every other cafe in town, and they also have delicious food to accompany their ambiance. I like going here to study, eat, coffee, read, etc. Lovely place. june 19, 2025: The staff is so kind, I come here frequently and they're always so warm and welcoming. They recently added Gelato? the mango is absolutely delicious.

Okay my coffee standards are higher than most of my ex-girlfriends' expectations. And deliver about as much. But let me tell you—this place delivers. First off, can we talk about Elia? Ladies and gents, she's serving good looks and great mochas. God was having a really good day when he made her. But unlike most pretty girls who've rejected me and my life, she's actually the sweetest person ever. This girl makes an iced mocha that'll make you wanna be monogamous. I took one sip and literally said out loud, "Where have you been all my life?" The couple next to me thought I was hitting on them. Maybe I was. The vibe in this place? Fly. Or whatever word the cool kids use these days for both "chill" and "sophisticated". You walk into this french cafe feeling like a regular person. You walk out feeling like a regular person with a caffeine buzz. So yeah, go to Elysee. Order a mocha from Elia. Sit there and pretend you're in France working on your screenplay like everyone else in Westwood. But unlike them, you'll actually be enjoying yourself because you're drinking liquid mythology and being served by an angel. And yes, I will be coming back tomorrow. Or would that be weird? If not maybe the next day. And probably the day after that. I don’t know I’ll ChatGBT what’s appropriate.

Google
I love their coffee and tiramisu and the fact that it doesn't close at 3pm, but the service is consistently terrible. I've been here several times and every time the barista seems very upset and annoyed that I'm there ordering coffee.

Google
Little corner coffee shop in the heart of Westwood. Had a really great latte, a long a couple of petit chocolate chip cookies, that satisfied my cravings. Nice stop and relax on a busy day

If you’re looking for good coffee, this place is not it. Prices are off the roof but quality is really bad. $7 for this mess (picture) is not worth it. Look for some place else to get your coffee fix.

Google
I was not impressed by the price gouging. I came to support, had a blueberry muffin that cost almost $6! The muffin was half the size of a Costco muffin and tasted exactly the same. Wow and sigh.

Yelp
I work close by so we order pastries and cakes from here from time to time and they never disappoint! Only thing I will say is that they are a bit dry but still good for what it is and I'm always down to support a local business. Heard the coffee was good but never tried so it's next on my list!

Yelp
I was told this place was pretty good so I had to check it out. I came here near closing time so there weren't many options left. I did get a few cookies and walked out. Cookies weren't the best looking but tasted okay. It was nothing special. To be fair, I would come back and try it again.

Yelp
For those reading my review: if you're a man and your significant other decides to pop into Ultra Beauty (a cosmetics store), know that just across the street, you'll find the wonderful Elysee Bakery & Cafe. This cozy spot is located in Westwood, near the university campus, on one of the busiest streets. Elysee Bakery & Cafe is an excellent cafe that immediately stands out with its European style. Here, they still write the menu on a chalkboard, which adds a special charm. I particularly liked the absence of modern minimalist designs and confusing furniture, which are common in many establishments. The cafe isn't retro, but it has a classic, warm tone that makes it especially cozy. The menu impresses with a wide selection of sweets: cakes, pies, cookies--there's something for everyone. We tried several types of coffee, cocoa, hot chocolate, juices, and desserts. Everything was incredibly delicious, with no exceptions. We were satisfied, the kids were happy--which is especially important--and, of course, my wife, who returned from the store, was thrilled with the sweets we picked out for her. The prices, of course, aren't cheap, but they're quite reasonable for Los Angeles. The service was top-notch: the staff at the counter took our order quickly and with a sense of humor, paying attention to both me and the kids. The cafe has a special atmosphere: there are many students who quietly go about their business without making noise. It's a pleasant place to sit, work, or simply enjoy delicious desserts. Unfortunately, I didn't try the main dishes like brunch or lunch, as I focused on the desserts. However, I noticed that many other customers were enjoying a variety of dishes, and judging by their faces, they were satisfied. I'll give this place 5 stars. We were very pleased and will definitely come back again the next time my wife decides to visit Ultra Beauty.

Yelp
The food was on the sweeter side, but still pretty good. People were nice. Good drinks.

Yelp
My friend and I were looking for a sweet treat after dinner, and Westwood Village doesn't have many options at night--especially considering we had limited time before our show at the Geffen. While the Yelp reviews here seemed to be mixed, we took a look at the dessert case and decided to try a chocolate cake that combined chocolate mousse with ganache. It was a generous slice at a fair price, and the cake satisfied. We particularly enjoyed the ganache, and while I've certainly had cakes that were more moist, I've had plenty that were less moist as well. Service was friendly, though the cafe itself could be perhaps a bit more cheerful in terms of the decor. All in all, however, I'd call it a successful outing, and I'd return if I were in Westwood and in need of a pre-show dessert.

Yelp
A pretty basic, American brunch place. Not a lot of diverse menu options, but if you like an American breakfast this is your place. It has omelets, french toast, eggs, etc. I got the yogurt parfait and it came with a side of fruit. The parfait was decent and reasonably filling for breakfast. I think this establishment gains points due to its indoor amenities. For starters, it has a nice interior that is aesthetically pleasing. Second, it's a great study spot for UCLA students. There is free wifi and it's easy to spend hours there just sitting, looking out the big glass window, and having a leisurely morning. Overall, a pretty decent place, but the food isn't really my taste. I would probably only return if I wanted to get my work done at a cafe.

Yelp
This is a cute study spot with good wifi and a few outlets here and there. Only a couple of gluten free options, but the coffee is nice and they offer free water. Service is nice, just hard to hear behind the sanitation glass.

Yelp
Stopped by for some cake! I came early morning around 8a and only "breakfast" type pastries like croissants and danishes were ready. I stopped by again around noon and all the goodies were out! Lots of options but I had a soft spot for strawberry cheesecake. Around $7 for the slice. It was packaged nicely in a box since I was going to eat it later with dinner. Good seating indoors and some outdoors seating available.

Yelp
Great little bakery coffee shop! Service was a 10/10! The gentleman that helped us came around the corner to talk to us about the pastries they had and answer all our questions! He was so patient and personable. We ordered a latte with almond milk which was good and a napoleon and chocolate fudge type cake. Everything tastes great together! We sat here for well over an hour, laughing and talking. Great little shop! Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Love the feeling of walking in here--like a French cafe. The cheese danish and the cinnamon rolls are amazing.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and the brunch, pastries, cakes, and lunches have always hit the spot. This time I got brunch of a caprese omelette. It comes with breakfast potatoes and a bun. The omelette was good, but the highlight were the potatoes. I almost wish I had asked if I could sub the bun for more potatoes because they were just perfectly crispy and creamy. I also got the cafe mocha. It was good and very creamy. The tables are sometimes hard to come by, but if you wait a bit, one will usually open up. My friend and I ended up studying after we caught up a bit while we ate. The ambient noise is a perfect cafe level for getting work done.

Yelp
I got a sandwich and a matcha from here. That matcha should be criminal to be even called a matcha. It was the nastiest thing I have ever had. Thank god they don't even have it on the menu but I asked if they had matcha and they said yes they do. The sandwich which itself was alright, I wanted something light and refreshing so I got a turkey and Brie sandwich which was mid

Yelp
Needed an afternoon espresso pick me up and Eliya the girl working the front register comped me with a lil desert on the house .

Yelp
Very friendly staff, nice and kind. The food is great. Nice place to stop by in Westwood for a coffee or working.

Yelp
I love this spot for lunch. Really great sandwiches and the pastries are delicious. During the school year, lots of students in here studying. But definitely a good amount of indoor and sidewalk seating.

Yelp
This is a great study spot for any UCLA students in Westwood! I initially came here because I saw that it closed at 10pm (which was ideal for me to do work for the evening), but I stayed for the cute atmosphere and delicious pastries. The latte was around $6 and my tiramisu around $7. I will note that the iced latte only came in an 8 oz cup, and I was told they do not sell them in a smaller size. Their espresso is quite strong, which I prefer. The tiramisu was massive, and I was able to take my remaining half home to eat the next morning. This goes for all their bakery case pastries-they are all huge in size! I will definitely continue coming here, and I recommend stopping by for brunch or just a coffee.
google avatar

Ellen H.

Yelp
It's a good place for brunch in Westwood. The food and ambiance is your neighborhood diner vibe. My omelette was fresh and wholesome. Will visit again in the future to try their lunch menu.
google avatar

Brittany J.

Yelp
This place always seems popular in Westwood so I wanted to try it out for breakfast before work. Was able to get free metered parking before 8am during the week. Was able to walk right in and order, youre given a number and then you find an open table. I thought they would have a lot more options available and pastry products on display. Not sure of the ones available were left over from the day before but there weren't many to choose from. I did get the chocolate chip scone which was good. Latte was a latte. Breakfast sandwhich was a disappointment. There was more bread than anything. I wouldn't order again and would try something different if I came back.
google avatar

Mahsa P.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I just love coming to this place on a weekend to chill! Such a cozy aesthetic vibe on top of delicious and fresh food! I'm a fan of their Salmon Benedicts, and anything you order from the brunch menu comes with a croissant and a fresh orange juice!! The staff are nice as well, even though they're always fully packed, but it wouldn't take too long for them to come find your table, bring your food and make sure the table has been cleaned!

Selina I.

Yelp
aborableee cafe and the barista kindly let us know that "it isn't a starbucks" when we asked her what their sweetest drink is lollll oops. they have a small coffee menu so we got two cafe lattes with caramel added, nothing too elaborate. they have many tables to sit at and lots of natural light in the place so it was a nice atmosphere to hang out in. i got to peacefully crochet here for a few hours and enjoy a cup of coffee! would definitely come again!

Yelp
Drove over to the west side for a meeting at Elysee bakery. Always love being in Westwood since it was my old stomping grounds when I spent summers at UCLA. Elysee has been a fixture for decades but I had never been before! It's a cute cafe where you could have a meeting or sit back and enjoy a book! The staff is super sweet and friendly! But now... I have to talk about the Don Corleone crepe... it is incredible!!! I want to go back just to have it again. When it was set in front of me it appeared very unassuming , with a couple little ketchup packets on the side, but once I took that first bite...I was shocked!!! The pesto was so flavorful and they don't skimp on the prosciutto. I added a photo of it sliced open just to prove how much they stuff into that little crepe. Do yourself a favor and order this the next time you are by UCLA. I definitely will.

Yelp
Chloe is the master of multitasking, friendliness, and efficiency. Came in with a close friend and unexpectedly received the most welcoming greeting and service ever. The cafe was perfect for a good conversation. Absolutely would have loved to stay there longer. Definitely a returning customer. Other than that, love the food, love the drinks here. Their Americano and sprinkle cookies hit the spot!!! :)

Yelp
Went out for breakfast this morning with the three (young adult) kids and enjoyed our time at Elysee. Free two-hour parking across the street on a Sunday morning, order at the counter, take a number, find your own table, and everything is delivered to you. We ordered two different omelets, an egg sandwich, and a make your own scramble. The side of bacon was the perfect crispiness, the home fries were chunks of potatoes deep fried (a tad too oily) - but can be swapped for fresh fruit, and you have your choice of white or wheat toast. I enjoyed my mushroom, scallion scramble (ordered cheddar but it was missing but oh well, healthier for me), but also found it a bit oily. We also tried a bear claw but it was underwhelming - the pastry wasn't particularly light or flaky, and there was no filling inside. Panera has excellent bear claws by comparison. It was easy for us to find seating and easy parking, and a good breakfast, so that's why I give it four stars, although it might more accurately rate 3.5.

Yelp
Best chocolate rugulach EVER!!! Every time I am in the area I have to get some. Totally addicted.

Yelp
Amazing cafe and coffee shop in Westwood!! Super close to UCLA (10-15 min walk) with lots of tables, outlets, and strong wifi! Like the rest of Westwood, there isn't a lot of parking but if you live nearby, it's a perfect walking distance from UCLA apartments and campus. Unlike many of the other coffee shops in Westwood, Elysee has lots of room and I've only seen people have difficulty finding a table to eat/study during peak lunch hours on weekends. There food is a bit pricey on the menu but they give large portions!!

Julia B.

Yelp
I am writing this review for my father-in-law. "I am been coming to Elysee cafe for over 30 years and it's one of the few places that have a legitimate capuchino. Not just a latte with extra foam. It is made with care and precision, as they do with all of their entrees. The bakery items are always delicious and made with care and concern. They show care for their customers and see them as somebody to please, not just as someone to make money off of."
google avatar

George V.

Yelp
Amazing matcha latte; desserts a little too sweet for me. The vibes great as well for studying / work
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
I love elysee! I started coming every finals week - it's a great study spot since it has plenty of seats and some outlets. Their coffee is really good, not acidic and has that deep roast/nutty essence to it. Their cakes are also delicious, they're pretty big so I usually split it with someone. Overall ambiance is very homey and rustic - great spot :)
google avatar

Minji W.

Yelp
I love the ambiance of Elysee because it feels like a diner cafe kind of feeling. I love their variety of pastries. The prices for the food and drinks feel overpriced for the quality. Nothing really stands out when it comes to the quality or the uniqueness of the items. I've ordered coffee, tea, and a brunch plate over various occasions.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
I haven't had the food but I usually come here to study if I want a quieter place. There's some outlets around but I try to come here with a full charged laptop just in case. Also the service is always good, they're nice :) I can't comment on the food itself but it has good wifi and is a good place to work and collaborate with people or do individual work.
google avatar

Bella A.

Yelp
Lovely place for lunch in the Westwood area, with great beverages and pastries. The more savory dishes were a little too oily and salty though.
google avatar

Emma L.

Yelp
Overall, I love the taste of the food! We ordered the French toast, which came with a side of potatoes which had good flavor and some dill sprinkled on top! The portion was huge for the French toast (3 big slices of bread). I would recommend splitting the French toast because it's a lot of food for breakfast. The cafe latte and the mocha were pretty standard, nothing special but both were still good. Ambiance wise, the morning sun coming through the windows is very pretty and does give Europe cafe vibes which loved. The service was pretty fast too! :)
google avatar

MK C.

Yelp
Didnt try a lot but just a couple desserts. Carrot cake and tiramisu are great. My friend had fruit tart and said it was yummy. Love the outside seatings in Westwood and this has a very cozy and relaxing kinda feeling just a couple blocks off from Westwood and Wilshire. Being here chatting with your friends catching up with sweet desserts and drinks, what can you ask for more? I loved the deco and food. Definitely coming back when coming to Westwood.
google avatar

Ally K.

Yelp
I like the decaf here, it has a strong flavor. Pastries are decent. It's pretty too, especially in the morning! They're not very nice lol but they're still helpful
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
I've been coming to Elysee for about 2 years. It is one of my favorite cafes in Westwood! It's a great place to study with lots of seating and outlets. I've always loved the ambiance, especially with the outdoors seating because it's covered with plants, very much enhancing the vibes. The staff are always lovely and most are very friendly. And the food!! Especially the pastries... amazing!! They have a beautiful display of pastries and cakes by the register that are very tasty. The food is pricey, but still very well done and enjoyable. I highly recommend trying this place.

Sophie A.

Yelp
The BEST French toast I have ever had in my life. It is so fluffy and delicious and it's perfectly paired with crispy potatoes! It looks so good that I even had 2 strangers come up to me in the cafe and ask what I ordered. They then both ordered the French toast too! Also the service was great. The two guys working were really welcoming and had big smiles on their faces despite it being peak brunch hour. I sat next to the window and it was just a really nice cozy vibe too. Would 10/10 recommend this spot to anyone in the Westwood/LA area! I am bringing my parents here next weekend :)
google avatar

Emmie H.

Yelp
I stopped in here to get some work done, grabbed a bear claw and some tea. There are a lot of places to sit, both inside and outside, and it's located in a less busy corner of westwood. Very high quality tea and a wide variety of selection. My bear claw was just OK - tasted a little bit old but I did come pretty early in the morning. The interior was quite busy and loud, lots of UCLA students doing work but if you don't mind it's a great place to stop by.

Yelp
Came in to this cute bakery after dinner for a piece of a cake for my boyfriends daughter birthday. When I walked in nobody greeted us, I walked over to the counter to order but the young girl behind the counter seemed occupied so I walked over to the side to have a look at the the cakes and after deciding which one I wanted I walked back over to the counter while I waited for the employee to help me. She looked at me and pretended to not see me, she walked back and forth a couple times looking for idk what and then she went to the register and continued to ignore me. Looked at her phone and scrolled on it before I taped the plastic divider, she still ignored that and I tapped again and said excuse me and she looked at me and said yess? As if she hasn't seen me waiting. I let her know what kind of cake slice I wanted and boxed it up for me. Didn't say thank you have a nice day or anything, extremely rude.
google avatar

Amy F.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a local place with coffee and a fantastic bakery case. This place hits the mark in Westwood. The Cobb salad is huge and topped with a generous amount of turkey and bacon. It's nearly big enough to share. As for the bakery case - oh my! I wanted to try one of everything! I opted for the tiramisu and it's was perfect. Not overly sweet with perfectly soaked ladyfingers. I ordered an accompanying cappuccino and it was perfect. The service was meh. There wasn't a line when I approached the counter and I had to wait 2 minutes for the staff to finishing their conversation before being acknowledged. It took about 15 mins to receive my food and cappuccino and I had to ask for silverware.
google avatar

Chloe K.

Yelp
got coffee, cake, and tiramisu here. all the bakery items sell out fast and service is also pretty quick. uou can spend all day here (brekkie, lunch, din menu foods all look so good), one of my go-to cafe spots in westwood!

Grace G.

Yelp
I ordered a small coffee to go today. I put it in my cupholder in my car for about 30 minutes before I picked it up while driving. The cup was SO cheap that it didn't hold its shape anymore. At the slightest squeeze just to hold the cup, the lid popped off because the cup became soft like cooked noodles. I spilled coffee all over myself and my car. A veteran bakery like Elysse should know better than to use such inappropriate cup to hold hot beverage.
google avatar

Jennifer T.

Yelp
Food was ok but there were cockroaches!! I saw one in the bathroom and two on the dining room floor. The bakery display was pretty, but I wouldn't come back.

Delicia E.

Yelp
I work in the area and came in for lunch with a friend. We were immediately greeted by Daniel, who was incredibly sweet and kind. He offered to help with any questions about the menu. Daniel's exceptional service made the experience memorable, and l'd definitely return just to interact with such a kind soul. I ordered the tuna sandwich with fries, and it was delicious. Thank you, Daniel, for your kindness.

Josue V.

Yelp
Don't know why this place has a bad rating. Staff is very nice and friendly. It's family owned but you can tell they care about what they do. Food is also super bomb. Got the omelette and also the Nutella crepes. Both things were outstanding in flavor. Food actually came out pretty quick too. Their coffee was also excellent. The architecture is also really nice. Great for a small date, had that romantic morning in Paris feel. 10/10 would go again.

Vince T.

Yelp
Really great atmosphere. Good food, great service. Parking is a little tough, but you can always find it.
google avatar

Ben S.

Yelp
Stopping by for breakfast before walking around UCLA for the day. A little pricey, but our visit was wonderful. I had a hot chocolate and the sweet crepe -- both delicious choices that didn't stay on the table for long at all. From the service to the presentation to the taste of the food, everything was great! No complaints here.
google avatar

Judy T.

Yelp
They have a nice looking pastry case. Other than that this cafe has seen better days. Lots of tables inside, but it's pretty run down looking. The service was rather abrupt and brusque. We were trying to ask about some of the desserts in the cases, not very kind or helpful. Long line moving slowly because it seemed they have one handheld payment device. Why? Our Croque was undercooked, cheese wasn't even melted and the bread was not very good. The eggs were overcooked. For me, it's a hard no. If I was desperate for a pastry (they were ok) I might go back, but doubtful as there are plenty of other choices in the area.
google avatar

Tanya A.

Yelp
Ridiculously rude waitress with short hair and glasses taking orders in the front. Asked for a side of fruit instead of toast and she would not let me switch anything or even give me the option to pay for my request- beyond stubborn and unreasonable. She wouldn't let me finish my sentences when I would ask a question and would flat out just say NO, it was hilarious in the most ridiculous way. To top it off, I got a simple omelette- egg whites, cheese and tomatoes and the cheese inside was cold and not melted. Definitely, won't return.

Yelp
I love this place, I get coffee from here all the time and set up to work here a lot too. I've enjoyed every drink I've gotten. I like the ambience, sometimes it's a bit crowded, but it's a nice vibe to work in. The pastries are good, and when the windows are open there's a pleasant breeze.
